Okay folks do your part and keep the Rotoguru hockey forum off life support. I don't know if other users read our stuff but it is a good read now and then. Good time to reflect back on our decisions and predictions. Purely optional but if you would like to post your thoughts on this years draft then have at it.

Your best value pick:
3.12 Iginla, Jarome (CGY) - While i didn't feel like i got tremendous value out of any of my picks this year, i do feel like i might get a decent turn around on Iggy in what was effectively the 7th round of this draft. He's older, but i still feel like as the incumbent number one option on his team he'll put up a big well-rounded stat line for me when it's all said and done.

Your riskiest pick:
4.01 Getzlaf, Ryan (ANA) - I'll admit it, the name value attracted me. But the idea a of huge bounce back season in a contract year from a player in his prime also played a role. Thought long and hard about he and Matt Duchene at this pick. Duchene's LW eligibility was tantalizing but i ultimately looked at Getzlaf's PIM edge as the decider.

Thoughts on your own team:
First time in about 6-7 seasons that i won't have the trio of Marian Hossa, Henrik Zetterberg and Martin Brodeur anchoring my team as keepers. Tough to let them go, but a combination of age minor gradual decline forced to look in another direction, one aimed towards Eric Staal, Scott Hartnell and Pekka Rinne. I love Hartnell's ability to fill up the stat sheet and will need him to come somewhere near last seasons epic performance to have a chance. Also looking for a big year from Staal with his brother now in town, and another top tier season from Pekka Rinne, which may tough given the loss of Ryan Suter on that fragile Nashville squad. Halak is my 2G and i like him to compliment Rinne's solid %'s, while ill need just about everyone else to step up and have near career years. My initial plan of drafting many players who played overseas as an advantage didn't really play out, so im worried about a slow start. And if i do get off to one, there won't be enough time to recover.

Sleeper pick on your team:
15.12 Boedker, Mikkel (PHO) - Boedker tore up the Finnish league during the lockout and if he can keep up the pace into the shortend season he may end up being the biggest difference maker for my team light on high upside players. Of course, he could also turn out to be a dud like every other sleeper pick ive picked for my own team in these recaps...
Sleeper pick of the draft:
None stand out too greatly but couple did catch my eye, like 10.06 Stastny, Paul (COL) , 9.06 Zajac, Travis (NJD) and 12.10 Lecavalier, Vincent (TAM). I think they'll all reasonably exceed their draft position.
Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player:
5.04 Moulson, Matt (NYI) - Back to scramble for alternatives once he flew off the board.
Thoughts on other teams:
Lots of balance again this year without any one team looking particularly dominant in any one category. But once again CSF's top loaded team needs to be reconized as the favorite. Ira's got offense to burn but needs Cam Ward to bounce back, while PD's got the best goaltender mix and an above average skater group. That's how i'll break it down...

Predict the top 3 mgrs:
First: CSF
Second: Ira
Third: PermDude
Sixth: Me

Cup Winner: St. Louis Blues

Other noteworthy items: Never seen my cheat sheets get torn up like they were this draft. After about the 7th round i was basically winging every single pick without direction. Managers were prepared. And here i was worried we wouldn't get off the ground in time for a draft at all...

Your best value pick: 14.05 Alex Steen
He'll be on a line with Tarasenko & Andy Mac, which should be dominant because Tarasenko's been lighting up the KHL and Steen's been lightning up the SEL.
Your riskiest pick: 7.08 Nail Yakupov
I don't think I've really made any risky picks this year, but Yakupov is the biggest unknown. He could turn into my best value pick if he clicks with Hemsky & Gagner on the Oilers second line. Last year Taylor Hall was quoted for saying that he expects Nail to put up 25-30 goals in his first season.
Thoughts on your own team:
I'm pretty happy about my team overall, I think I achieved everything I set out to do (unlike the ATHS draft). I really threw the PIM category out the window this draft because I think a shortened season will mean alot of discipline from the players, particularly the forwards. I sort of tried to load my D with as many PIM's as possible by loading up the first half of the draft with pure offensive forwards. As The Dienesty mentioned, goaltending will be the ultimate decider on how my team finishes. After the Hurricane's off-season upgrades, I'm sort of giving Ward one more season to put up the numbers I'd expect from a keeper goalie. It was very hard choosing him over Howard and I hope Howard gets exposed this season without Lidstrom on his backend.
Sleeper pick on your team: See 'Best value pick'
Sleeper pick of the draft: 15.07 Carl Hagelin
Meant to start on the Rags first line with Nash & Richards. Could really put up big numbers if he can stick there.
Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player: 10.11 Thomas Vokoun LittleM
A large portion of my draft picks were made from my mobile as soon as I woke up from bed to go to work (I'd wake up at 2:30PM EST) and definitely would have taken Vokoun if I had gone to my computer for a 3 minute assessment. Vokoun will be the best statistical backup this year, and Dan Bylsma has already stated that Vokoun will get a load of starts.
Thoughts on other teams:
I think Cowebs has drafted alot on potential, and could have a great team if they all break out this year(Tarasenko, Silferberg, C. Stewart, Johansson, Rask). I actually think The Dienesty has the best goaltending group even though I think Price is the best Canadian goaltender in the NHL, I just don't have confidence in the Canadiens. Dienesty IMO just may have too many hot and cold players (Cammelleri, Staal, Getzlaf, Havlat) for a shortened season. As Dienesty said, CSF has to be considered a top contender. The only thing standing in his way is goaltending (Quick just had a significant surgery for a goaltender, and I'm not sure LA is built for a 48-game shotgun schedule. Luongo is still a question mark, and Harding an even bigger one). If Bryzgalov doesn't crap the bed this season and Brunner pans out, I think Taxman turns into a favorite.

First: Taxman
Second: CSF
Third: The Dienesty

Cup Winner: Rangers

Your best value pick:11.11 Tomas Fleischmann I was surprised that he kept dropping and was available (after keepers) in the 17th round. Last year he put up 61 points, including 24 goals and 22 PPP. Skates on Panthers top line and Power Play unit. Getting that much offense so late in draft is rare.

Your riskiest pick:6.02 Justin Schultz Based on all the hulabaloo and his imminent induction to NHL Hall of Fame, I decided to get Schultz in an early round in case he is the second coming of Lindstrom. Chara has been a mainstay on my squad for years, but he is getting long of tooth and I need a successor. If he performs near expectations, then I've grabbed a long term stud. If not...well that's why it's risky.

Thoughts on your own team:I think my team will put up competitive G, A and PPP, but will be short on PIM and SOG. +/- is always a crap shoot, but my gut tell's me I'm going to be in negative territory. Biggest problem last year was G stats and that should, at best, repeat.

Sleeper pick on your team:Last pick, age 30, Derek Roy. He is posed for a bounce back in Dallas because he is finally healthy and joins two other Star off season additions, Jagr and Whitney, returning talent Ryder and youngsters Benn and Erickson. Centering some combination of that talent and 3 minutes/game off PPP time should reignite Roy's point production.

Sleeper pick of the draft:Cobwebs with Tarasenko at 6.07 my pick for the Calder Cup who is dripping with talent on a very talented team.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player:Tommy D took Brad Marchand 4.08. I was set to take him at 4.02 and inexplicably chose Mike Richards who is a nice player, but I think Marchand will be exceptional this year on a strong Boston team producing +/- and PIM in addition to scoring.

Thoughts on other teams: Race for first should be between toss up between Dienasty, Ira and Cobwebs. Cobwebs had a great draft, especially value picks of Pavelesky, Tarasenko, Zajac and Chris Stewart. Ira had best first 8 picks in the league and will be competitive in every offensive category . Dienasty just drafted quality players who (I disagree with Ira here) seemingly always produce and don't have off years. Also, CSF and Little M both have exceptional keepers as a platform for building competitive teams.

Predict the top 3 mgrs:
First: Cobwebs
Second: Ira
Third: Dienasty

Fifth: Taxman

Cup Winner: Boston Dependent on Rask becoming The MAN

Your best value pick: I think Justin Williams in the 13th is a pretty good value. Plays a lot of top line minutes. But I also think 12th rounder Ekman-Larsson is going to make me consider him as a keeper next year with a bigtime breakout.
Your riskiest pick: Mike Green in the 7th round. Kind of a lottery ticket pick when I should've been trying to grab the best of the remaining forward talent. Or maybe Kiprusoff in the 6th. I don't really like him and I think Calgary should be pretty bad, but I also don't like goalie drama and am glad to get away from the Vancouver guys this year. Not sure why I didn't prefer Hiller.
Thoughts on your own team: Hoping for a few more bouncebacks than I'd like. Carter, Green, Zidlicky, Myers, Kesler. Really hoping Benn signs soon, and one of him or Landeskog leapfrog Datsyuk as my top offensive player. I think I have a solid lock on 2 starting goalies. Nothing extraordinary though, hope to settle around the middle with this crew. Tried my best to pick forwards and not stack D this year. Did better in the middle stages and still found some decent picks at D. It should be a strong crew based on Byfuglien alone. Hoping my forwards turn out average. With some bouncebacks and breakthroughs, they could contend. Obviously going to be active but gotta give some of these projects some time first.
Sleeper pick on your team: If the surgeries fix Kesler and he returns to play back in keeper form, I have found a great sleeper gem.
Sleeper pick of the draft: Souray or Stastny.
Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player: Eberle! But for players I had a shot at, not picking Hossa feels foolish.
Thoughts on other teams: I still barely know what's going on. Competition looks good in general.

Predict the top 3 mgrs:

Your best value pick: I like Peter Mueller in the last round. Was averaging almost a point a game before his injuries and if he gets 50-55 in the last round that's great value.

Your riskiest pick: Probabaly Craig Anderson. I usually pick up a second goalie in the first round but noone stood out after the first three picks were goalies. Anderson got the first start but there's two other goalies breathing down his back.

Thoughts on your own team: I did little to no research besides looking at Yahoo ranking this year. I didn't put a priority on wingers or centre in the first rounds because it seems every year I'm way over in games played in these positions. I tried to load up on solid d-men early which I think I did but my goal scoring might be down. Goaltending should be decent but Markstrom is out already.

Sleeper pick of the draft: Ekman-Larsson is going to be a star and could be a keeper for years to come.

Sleeper pick on your team: Kyle Okposo could be poised for a big year. Especially if he plays along Tavarres.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player: Rocket Richard with Teddy Purcell. I was going to try and pick all the Newfs in the league, seeing it's where I live, but he shot that down.

Thoughts on other teams: CSF still has the great keepers. Although not as shiny as they were a couple of years ago. Dienasty is solid, especially like the Blues goalie tandem. Cobwebs has a nice team but goaltending could be an issue.

First: dienasty

Third: CSF

Your best Value pick:
Chris Stewart (10.07), last season's stats weren't pretty except for his PIM. I read that he's in good shape to start the season so I'm hoping that he can
return to his 2009-11 form, and he'll have plenty of talented players around him to do it.
Andy McDonald (14.07), Eligable at LW and puts up good numbers when healthy, good value this late in the draft.

Your riskiest pick:
Vladimir Tarasenko (6.07), He's finally here, the highly skilled russian, a first round draft pick that should have gone higher. 21 years old and already a star
in the KHL, the question is if he now can adjust to the NHL. I think that he can and is the frontrunner for the Calder. The Blues have landed a gem here, and he'll help them
win the cup this year. Maybe I reached for him a bit, but when Perron and Oshie both flew off the board I had to pull the trigger.
Jakob Silfverberg (13.06), MVP in the SEL and ready to take on the NHL. During the lockout he has played in the AHL and will now get a chance to play on the top line with
Spezza and 9MM. I felt a little silly picking him before Alfie, but I'm not sure how Alfie will handle the condsensed schedule and stay healthy.

Thoughts on your own team:
I tried to pick value and not take too many risks. My goal was to fill my LW and RW early and have a strong D. This year I tried not to totally ignore PIM, and focused on SOG
and goalscoring. When CSF got Ryan I was thinking of getting Zetterberg instead, but opted for another route and got Pietrangelo. Lot of love for the Blues this year.
As always my goalies and PIM will determine my season, Last season I finished last in PIM, so to be able to contend at the top I need to do better.

Sleeper pick on your team:
Travis Zajac (9.06), I considered Stastny here but decided to go with potential. Could Zajac be the new Parise in NJ? I hope so;-)
Marcus Johansson (17.06), first round pick, 3rd season, now playing on the top line with Ovechkin and Backstrom, and PP1. What's not to like?

Sleeper pick of the draft:
Stastny (10.06), LeCavalier (12.10), Alfie (14.06), Gagne (17.03).

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player:
Really wanted Oliver Ekman-Larsson but Filthy got him at 8.03.
I had Victor Hedman on top of my list when CSF stole him, had to settle for "train wreck" Wideman instead:(
I also had Harding on top of my list when CSF got him the pick before. I don't understand why Ira got Bernier instead of handcuffing Backstrom with Harding.

Thoughts on other teams:
Looking at the draft grid my team looks really good, but then I look at the other teams and most of them look even better.
The Dienasty and CSF have real strong teams filled with value picks and should rank as favorites, giving an edge to Dienasty for his better goalies.
You can never count out Little M with his always strong D and value picks. Ira has a good team, and Yakupov could be a difference maker.
TommyD has a great team, just needs some more goalies. Filthy and Taxman are usually very active managers, and will be dangerous with good pickups.
All teams have a shot, just need some luck and keep away from injuries.

Predict The Top 3:
First: The Dienasty
Second: CSF
Third: Tommyd

Cup Winner:

I actually strongly considered Harding, but when he was diagnosed with MS that scared me off a bit. Also Quick just came off major surgery and was/am counting on Bernier getting in alot of games as the physical toll on such a condensed schedule will require so.

I'm sure that Harding will play otherwise he wouldn't be in the lineup. If Backstrom goes down you're in big trouble, you're gambling on who will get injured, it's better to secure your goalie position, especially when it's a shortened season. I suggest that you and CSF make a trade. Well, that's what I would have done, but thanks for the explanation.

Your best Value pick:
Daniel Alfredsson (14.06), Ottawa started to roll late last season. He’s a lot older than I thought but he still has the skillset to score and has a bit of truculence when and combined should get in points in every category.

Your riskiest pick:
Roberto Luongo (1.07), I took a gamble that he might get traded sooner than later and move into a number 1 spot. Drafting a backup goalie right out of the gate isn’t a smart move. I should have waited, it’s a strike season and the goalie rotations are going to be absolutely crazy.

Thoughts on your own team:
I tried to pick players that filled my weak areas from last year. Focussing on PIM’s and +/-. My goal was to fill my LW and RW early and fill in D later. I think my D is half decent considering I didn’t take my first dman til the 5th round. With Crosby and Ovech anchoring my team and Kessel able to pick up points in every category, I thought I could take a few gambles and round out PIM’s and overall point categories early. Bobby Ryan is a tricky pick. He has the tools but can Boudreau get anything out of him. I need to do better in PIMs and +/- to have a shot at this years title. I sure hope Simmonds and Read light it up.

Sleeper pick on your team:
Michael Grabner (17.07), Isles are another up and coming team. They have the pieces, they remind me of where the Blues where 2 years ago. If he can put up a half decent +/- I’ll be happy.

Sleeper pick of the draft:
Zetterberg (3.02), Mueller (17.05), Havlat (13.12).

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player:
Hoped for Nash to make it one more pick but Cobwebs snagged him….I ended up with Luongo. I’m still shaking my head….A very solid pick up of Nash on a very talented team. I’m liking the Rangers this year.
I wanted Vokoun but LittleM got him and I think that is a fantastic pickup. He’s projected to play 40% of the games. That is a huge amount and when you look at the team in front of him you can just see the w’s accumulating. I’m guessing that’ll be 16+ wins for Vokoun this year. It really changed my draft strategy after he went off the board.
So then I planned to round out my goalies with Bernier. A Quick/Bernier combo would have given me a full 48 games for the goalie position.
“I don't understand why Ira got Bernier instead of handcuffing Backstrom with Harding”. Ditto.
I had Bernier slotted for my pick in 16.06 and then Ira scooped him 16.05. Oh well. It was a coin flip knowing that Quick had surgery and Backstrom is often injured. The Harding diagnosis of MS didn’t deter me one bit. He’s a solid backup who will play.

Thoughts on other teams:
What to do in a strike shortened season. It’s a freaking sprint. If a stud gets injured do you dump or hold. Oh well at least we are playing hockey and drafting. It will be interesting to see how the big the point swings will be this year.
Off the top of my head here’s a few teams that stand out:
LittleM’s team is good but got a bit sketchy with the last 4 picks. The Nuge probably needs one more year and LittleM will be king.
Philflyboy’s team can be summed up in one word. Grinders. The team is a comprised of well rounded numbers players. They’ll put up consistent numbers in all categories but no one will really run away with a category.
PermDude’s got Parise. He’ll do well in Minnesota. Kassian is a great pickup at 16.09. Not too sure on Josi, Roman. Rookie D is probably one of the biggest gambles and perm has two.
Tommyd’s year to shine with Stamkos, Richards, Miller, Hall, Clowe, Ladd. I like the Mueller pickup.
Sorry boys I don’t have time for the rest of you. But every team is solid. Keepers are solid and the drafting was quick with very few mistakes.
Predict The Top 3:
First: Cobwebs
Second: Taxman
Third: Tommyd

Cup Winner:
Rangers

Next year I’ll pay more attention to the positions. We really need to fill those position spots before we complete our roster. I goofed on Centre and a few others forgot to draft a full roster too.
