This is the part of the draft where my queue gets totally decimated. Tough choices, at this point. Had to go with the second goalie or else I'd be left with a scrub, but that means great skaters Marleau and Nash (next in my queue) are bypassed.

It's sick. The teams all look well balanced right now. Rounds 6 thru 10 will shake out the contenders from the wannabee's. :)

Good pace to the draft so far.

To assist with Q management I'm updating Yahoo! as we draft - Assigning the players to teams. It removes the selected players from the available players list. It should help speed up the process when picking for the next rounds.

Sorry for the delay. It's probably too early to toss the dice on a guy like Drouin, but he's got such high upside I didn't think he'd fall another round.

Never too early PD. Nyquist, Nichushkin, and Drouin have all been snatched away from my queues in successive rounds.
The joys of drafting in the 12th position.
In all fairness the same statement could be said by everyone other manager in their current draft slot. I'm constantly changing my strategy based on 23 picks that I must painfully watch.

Hmmm. Thought Drouin had an "upper body" injury (which would keep him out a couple of weeks, at most) and now I see he'd got a fractured thumb. Sigh.

Well, he's a good stash, anyway.

Ecuador? I'm sure there is a good story behind the move. Anything like the movie Moon Over Parador?

It's great to hear from you Goldy and thanks for checking in. Sorry you couldn't join us this year. I had to do what was best for the league as we ran out of time waiting for you.

Mailedfoot had an excellent draft and I'm a bit bummed with him and his picks. Nothing got by him.

Draft over in record time. Well done everyone. Results have been entered into Yahoo! Please check your teams for issues. You can review your teams by selecting Draft Central and then select Draft Results.
Let me know if there are errors. I have plenty of time to correct them.

I'll set up a Draft Recap thread.

Once the checks are complete I'll open the league next week.

Thanks Dienasty!

I tossed up a pretty wild league idea in post 26, but now I have a more reasonable idea or two for next season.

One thought is that we roster only 1 goalie. With 2 goalies, it feels like everyone has to try hoarding. Often seems to be good fortune deciding the goalie categories.

Another is to turn a bench (or 2nd goalie spot into) another centre position. There has been thoughts in the past about the games played maximums being low, and with so many players eligible at centre, I think adding another centre position would help. Personally, the maximums are why I tend to roster so many goalies, so this would also help with giving goalies a more reasonable value.

All for now.

Changing to only 1 goalie spot sounds a little drastic and boring to me, I'd rather change maximum games for goalies from 164 to 120, but I don't know if that's doable in Yahoo. Turning a bench spot into another centre position is an interesting idea that we should explore further.

I don't believe Yahoo! has the capability to adjust maximum games for a specific position. It's a general pool setting.

With that said, another possibility is to reduce the number of stat categories at the goalie position. The two goalie positions currently account for 40% of the scoring.

780 total points are available.
468 points to skaters. 14 positions.
312 points to goalies. 2 positions.

Other option could be to increase another stat category for forwards.

I like the thought of adding another C option.

There is some good discussion here.

Regarding additional positions, I am not opposed to adding another player, however, I wouldn't want to limit it to an additional centre. Instead, I would make it either:
F Forward Any centers, left or right wingers or
Util Utility Any non-goaltender

Adding another non-goalie would dilute the impact of each forward though. As CSF posted above, the standings are heavily skewed towards goalies. In the past, I have been against adding categories in hits and/or blocked shots, but these stats are becoming more accepted in hockey (and more reliably counted), so maybe we should consider them.

Adding hits as a category for skaters sounds like a good idea. Two categories for goalies are not directly related to the number of games played, GAA and SV%, so we should keep them, but is there another category that can replace W and SHO?
104Little M
      ID: 8914316

I think the possible goalie categories are:
GS Games Started
W Wins
L Losses
GA Goals Against
GAA Goals Against Average
SA Shots Against
SEC Seconds Played
SV Saves
SV% Save Percentage
SHO Shutouts

I am not a fan of shutouts as a category, but I like the alternatives even less. Maybe, the best solution is just to drop shutouts as a scoring category.

PS: I am talking about for next season.

Ya yea, next season for sure!

I really, just out of tradition, do like Yahoo for fantasy sports. Staying is preferred to me. Shutouts is a crapshoot. I like it and I don't like it. Adding a flex position leads to multiple strategy options ideally, which would be great. As mentioned before, another roster position to get points out of, takes away from the goalie hoarding, which would be optimum I think? Losing shutouts would help also.

I'm quite indifferent overall, definitely not picky about any settings, I can adapt! This just seems like a good time to get the talks going. My vote goes to the commish if he'll have it.

I had suggested one goalie, cause in my mind, it would make the day to day decision making more exciting. Right now it's very hard to hit 164 goalie games with 12 teams. I realize this contributes to a lot of the fun too. I'm just thinking out loud at this point... don't mind me!

Oh, I was gonna mention hits originally and again just in that last post, but keep forgetting. I will echo that the tracking has improved and would be open to trying hits and/or blocked shots for sure. D value is pretty low, aside from having to roster 5. (Another thought, cut one D spot? Nah...)

All for now, I swear!

Adding another scoring category for skaters would be my preferential choice. Hits probably the most interesting since it counts up faster than blocked shots, and isn't as flukey as say short handed goals and gwg's. Also I do agree, goalie stats are weighted quite heavily in this league.

By neutralizing them a bit with more emphasis on quality skaters I think managers will be inclined to draft fewer goalies, thus leaving more in the selection pool and lessening the hoarding effect during the draft.

CSF, can we get the yahoo league activated so I can start setting up my roster for this week? :)

I like a lot of these ideas.

I'd be in support of
1. Adding a 'hits' category
2. Dropping +/- (I always thought its a ridiculous stat for fantasy)
3. Would be open to dropping G.A.A. and/or SV%
I'm also of the opinion that the goaltending position has too much weight in our scoring. I wouldn't mind if we just used the classic 'Wins' (and Losses) and 'Shutouts' categories for goalies and abandoned the rest.
4. However, if we did keep GAA and SV%, I would support dropping the SO category to weaken the goaltending position from the scoring weight

Bah, I made a big mistake with the waiver wire. I didn't set the waiver priority in the draft prior to turning it on.

So the waiver wire has been reset and adjusted based on the order of pickups made today.

It hurts me. I made a waiver claim on Desharnais and didn't get him. That's how I figured out the waiver wire issue. LOL.

K I couldn't wait, I had to check and bring this back up.

Can we get a consensus before All Star break or even sooner?

Not to step on toes, but to be proactive and recap what I have just skimmed, as well as add my own random twist on what I have just skimmed, feel free to edit as needed:

A- Add hits? Yay or nay.
B- Add util? Yay or nay.
C- Swap +- for block shots? Or add block shots? Any other offensive change propositions?
D- Drop GAA? Or drop shutouts? I suggest drop GAA based on reading Ira's post above. GAA & S% can be redundant, and high scoring team goalies tend to suffer in GAA, so eliminating GAA would give us more elite goalie options in my mind.
E- Trade draft picks? Is that already a thing? We should do it.
F- What else? I was either too noob or too busy in the past to make suggestions, so forgive me for going overboard here fellas! haha. Cheers.

I would go

A. Nay on hits
B. Yay on add UTIL
C. Not sure about this. If forced to choose, I'd say keep this the same.
D. It always struck me as a lot of overlap with the Goalie stats. But since they don't do much I don't think we can get away from that. Maybe add saves to help boost goalies who are on bad NHL teams?

D. Get rid of SO

A. Yay
B. Yay
C. Nay
D. Nay
E. I'd always assumed we were allowed to do this.

My overall feeling is that yes, we should make an effort to balance out the weight of goaltending stats towards scoring, I think adding a skater scoring stat like Hits would be a good way to do it. I'm opposed right now to removing either save% or GAA, but shutouts Id have to think longer about.

Not sure I have enough perspective for this yet but here goes:

A. I could support Hits
B. I could support adding a UTIL in place of a D man
C. Keep +/-; add Face Offs Won
D. Not really in favor of changing Goalie categories
E. Have no problem with trading draft picks
F. Add one or even two more keepers

In summary, adding Hits and Face Offs Won would add 2 different skater categories and in effect reduce the weight of Goalie stats

118Cobwebs

A. Yay to Hits
B. Nay
C. Keep +/-, add Points
D. Drop Shutouts, replace with Saves
E. Have no problem with trading draft picks

To get a better balance between goalie stats and skater stats, we need to add 2 new skater categories, preferably Hits and Points. Shutouts is a quantity stat that doesn't happen often enough, so it becomes a freaky stat, could be replaced with Saves which also is a quantity stat. I'm not a fan of the +/- category, maybe Game Winning Goals would be better, Face Offs Won is to dependent to the C position.

I didn't really give my own votes before. woops.

A- Yay. Add hits will make some of the fringe D options into decent pickups. This is rolling towards a majority yay if a nay campaign doesn't happen.

B- Yay. And to clarify, I'd vote to add Util at expense of a BN spot. If a nay campaign for hits happens, I'd want Util in at the expense of D5 spot instead.

C- Nay. Especially after seeing the lack of consensus on what we'd change to. For a couple seasons away, discussions on changing +/- to something else should be brought up again.

D- Nay. Again, after a season or two of seeing how adding hits and a util spot evens things out, we may want to revisit things. If adding hits fell apart, I'd be on board the drop shutouts campaign however.

E- I feel like draft picks have been traded before, so I guess it's sweet to know for sure. I'd assume run it past commish and give reminders at drafttime as well would be smart if the situation arose.

F- Change keeper outlook eh? I'd be very on board with changing to six keepers. 1G, 2D, 1LW, 1C, 1RW (based on end of season positions) would be sweet.

Also expansion idea? 2 tier league would be cool. We just transitioned to this in a football league this year and it went surprisingly smooth. The use of co-owner team function in Yahoo worked out well for the guy commishing everything. If nobody had their hearts set on commish duties, I'd step up to commish the 'AHL' league if I wasn't already in it and there was no interest among the 'AHL' owners. If we upped our keepers to six, dropping the 'NHL' league to 10 teams might be nice too. Bottom 2 teams plus 6-8 recruits should be doable by September? I have 4-5 guys in mind, and if 1 accepted, and half of you guys had similar scenarios unfold, we'd be set. I'll start seeing if interest exists among my friends throughout the rest of winter, just in case.

In summary, barring some nay campaigns, it feels like we'll add Hits and a Util spot for next season. And barring some focussed opinions, the rest looks to remain the same. Talks about keeper numbers and expanding to a tiered puck system have now begun while we await any more thoughts on changes.

Happy New Year gang.
