Would love to do a recap. Commish, could you "Un-stop" the draft over at Drafttime so we can get access to the draft order, draft grid, etc again? Thanks.

Should be good over at draft time. I skipped the final 4 rounds and it appears the draft has finished. Let me know if you are still having issues looking at the draft. thanks.

I decided to shake things up a bit this year, out with Backstrom/Rask and in with Panarin/Jones. And when it was time for my first pick I couldn't decide on a goalie
so I went all in with Auston Matthews. I'd just come home after a World Cup week in Toronto were I saw 8 games at the ACC and Matthews impressed me. This is a
keeper league, so why not?

Your best Value pick:
7.08 Matt Duchene - he showed that he's an elite player during World Cup, expecting a career season from him.

Your riskiest pick(s):
10.05 Gustav Nyquist - was not happy with this pick, don't know what I'll get from him, but at least he's dual eligible.
12.05 Dylan Strome - always risky with rookies.

Thoughts on your own team:
The NHL has become a young man's game, and my team is loaded with youth (except for Hossa and Smith), maybe too many rookies to win the league.
Looking over my picks, I couldn't have done things any different. Projections has me struggling in +/- and SV%.
Should be able to finish in the top 6 again.

Sleeper pick on your team:
13.08 Oscar Klefbom - If he gets a lot of PP-time and is paired with Adam Larsson, he'll get lots of points this season.

Sleeper pick of the draft:
11.11 Evander Kane (CSF) - a steal, if healthy and gets his act together.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted and name that player:
10:01 Mika Zibanejad (The Dienasty) - was on top of my Q, a new team, time for a breakout season.
9:04 Alex Galchenyuk (mailedfoot) - was on top of my Q, top line minutes will increase his production.
15:06 Sam Reinhart (wolfer) - was on top of my Q, would have been a perfect fit on my team.

Thoughts on other teams:
tommyd: Should finish in the top 6, a well balanced team.
wolfer: Will struggle in PIM and Hits.
PermDude: Good skaters but goalie stats could hurt his chances of winning.
Filthy: Good skaters but +/- is bad. Was autopicking all those goalies on purpose?
Taxman: Will dominate PIM and Hits, but needs to pick up other players to balance his team.
LittleM: A well balanced team. Will dominate +/-, but needs his young guns to produce.
CSF: The best keepers. Needs production from his D. Otherwise good value picks.
The Dienasty: Good draft, could win the league again.
Ira: Nice draft. Needs Kucherov and Lindholm to get signed soon.
IAC: Needs his skaters to produce better than projected, and Fleury to bounce back.
mailedfoot: Well balanced team. The team to beat.

What was he thinking! Worst manager miscue of the draft:
Auston Matthews (1:08), what was he thinking? Matthews is overvalued and won't produce his draft position;-)

My entire team is a reach this year, best hope they all have good seasons. All of these players I drafted are likely to be busts or could have great years. That's why I picked myself to finish first again. Just kidding. I'll have a tough time repeating this year.

Your best value pick(s):
11.11 Evander Kane. First line winger and on the first pp unit. Hopefully he can stay out of trouble and put his mind to hockey. I'm counting on it, just hope it works out for him like it did for Patrick Kane a year ago. His numbers won't be similar to PKane but if he plays hockey the way he can I should do alright with this pick.

Your riskiest pick(s):
My team is loaded with them. I thought I try to something different and change up my conservative pick strategy. We'll see how it works out.
8.02 Alexander Radulov, RW, Montreal
15.11 Nikita Zaitsev D, Toronto
11. 11 Evander Kane, LW, Buffalo
9.11 Ondrej Pavelec Winnipeg
7.11 Jonathan Drouin, LW, Tampa Bay

Thoughts on your own team:
Meh, it'll be an interesting year. I went off the grid for many of these picks and went against the grain of picking proven players. I really like Jaden Schwartz as a player and may have grabbed him too early. Leon Draisatl seems like a steal in round 14. I kinda of left the d and g to last, again. It could hurt me overall, but the juicy forwards still on the board where too good to pass up. Fishing the FA list for semi-decent d tends to be my plan most years. It'll be the same this year.

Sleeper pick on your team:
16.02 Mike Cammalleri, NJD. The guy was injured for half the season but put up crazy numbers on a mediocre team. That team got better with the acquisition of Taylor Hall. Cammi's not flashy, he just knows how to find he net.

Sleeper pick of the draft: 2.06 Niklas Backstrom, great value pick in this round. wow.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted:
I wanted to two players. mailedfoot took Charlie Coyle. He's slated for first line and first unit PP. He has a lot of upside playing in Minnesota this year.
Wolfer took Sam Reinhart, Buffalo. Same reasoning. He was available so late in the rounds but I couldn't make it fit with me leaving my d positions so late.
So many good value players available so late in the rounds.

Thoughts on other teams:
Filthy's team will be interesting with so many goalies. I think he set a new record with goalie picks. Pretty good since him and Taxman didn't protect one this year.
tommyd has a great d corp and overall he has a very good team.
mailedfoot has solid goaltending. I like his roster but i'm not sure about the center corps. That could be his weakness.
Taxman was solid drafting, he's balanced in all categories and positions. Definate contender.
PermDude gets Corey Perry to go along with Toews, Tarasenko and Bergeron. That's a good fit. He left LW a little late. It might hurt him, but i'm picking him for the #1 spot this yea
Everyone else just kept picking up someone I thought would be good on my team. It's just another solid round of drafting. Good job by all managers.

Other noteworthy items:
The world cup really changed the draft for me. The younger players really stood out and I was torn about dumping Marchand, but I did. He was lights out in the tourney while Kessel sat at home. If he has the same season he had last year then I'm a dumbs. It would make 2 players that i haven't kept that I will regret. Yeah I was the dumbass that jettisoned Tarasenko two seasons ago and still kick myself for it.

What was he thinking! Worst manager miscue of the draft (let's have some fun with this one):
tommyd drafting Shane Doan in round 11. He had a solid draft going until this hiccup. He sure has an up and coming team that could dominate for years. I'm not sure about this one pick.
Filthy. Okay goalies are a value in this pool, but 6 seemed a bit excessive. We'll see how it shakes out. He could dominate in these categories, but will struggle in the offensive categories.

Your best value pick(s): Going by ADP, would have to say Jeff Skinner with pick 220. I could also make an argument for Kris Letang in round 6 and I’m also warming up to Hagelin at pick 237.

Your riskiest pick(s): Probably Dubnyk and Varlamov but I think once you get past the first dozen or so goalies, they all carry a certain amount of risk. As far as skaters go, probably Braydon Schenn and Mike Hoffman. I need them to take it to the next level scoring wise. Also need for Thornton to hang in there another year.

Thoughts on your own team: Fairly well balanced but not sure if I have enough scoring punch. Before the draft, I was hoping to maybe get both Thornton and Couture back but couldn’t pass up Letang. Will have to be vigilant about the waiver wire.

Sleeper pick on your team: Troy Brouwer? A guy who is in position for a scoring boost and contributes nicely in penalties and hits.

Sleeper pick of the draft: Tough question…Perron with pick 250? It looks like he starts the season with Tarasenko and Lehtera but will have to stay healthy and productive to be the sleeper pick of the draft.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted: Was hoping Dylan Larkin would make it back to me in round 9, but Tommy D snagged him two picks before me.

Thoughts on other teams: Balanced league with many interesting rosters; at the risk of exposing my ignorance will make following observations:
Perm Dudes: Will need Andersen or Miller to step up
Tommy D: I really like this team; should be strong in my estimation
Filthyrich: Good core roster; not a lot of depth in the skaters
Ira: Good keeper group; will need to get scoring from the draft/waiver wire though
Radio Roberts: Good forward group; Huberdeau injury hurts; light on hits, penalties
IamCanadian: Well balanced team; should be a contender
Cobwebs: Lots of good players; can Panarin duplicate last season?
Little M: Solid lineup led by Kane, Forsberg; Hellebuyck was nice pick; should be good
Tax Defense: Balanced team with some big hitters; enough scoring to contend?
SuperFreak13: Really solid team; Crosby injury and Pavelec waive raise some questions
The Dienasty: Another good team; should be one of the top dogs

Other noteworthy items: Will be interesting to see if the Yahoo position realignment has an effect; other things being equal, I tend to favor dual eligible players for added flexibility. I noticed at least a couple of teams with no dual eligible players.

What was he thinking! Worst manager miscue of the draft (let's have some fun with this one): I am by no means calling this a mistake but one pick that surprised me was Zetterberg being taken as early as he was; although he is definitely capable of putting up points if healthy, he is getting a little long in the tooth and kind of faded badly last year. The Red Wings seem to be trending downward and I am not convinced he is still completely healthy. Now watch him prove me wrong…

Your best value pick(s):
Pretty happy with where i was able to pick-up 3.12 Couture, Logan (SAN) and 10.01 Zibanejad, Mika (NYR). With Couture i think he slid under the radar a bit due to his injury shortened regular season pt totals from last year. On a high offense in San Jose i think he was upside to 70 pts with great peripheral stats. Zibanejad i have high hopes for a breakout year. His fantasy production used to come in bunches in Ottawa where he may not have been relied upon as heavily as i think he will be in NYR to produce offense. I think his upside is all the way to 70 pts if he stays healthy. Given those expectations, to land him round 10 feels great.

Your riskiest pick(s):
7.12 Fabbri, Robby (STL) - Have to admit i bought into the hype a bit here. Fabbri had a terrific 2016 playoffs but didn't do much to extinguish himself prior to that in the regular season. I like the fact he plays in STL with a talented roster that can score goals. The hope here is he gets quality PP time and a regular role alongside Tarasenko that'll keep his stats such as plus/minus and shots healthy even if he goes into his own slump. Although to be honest, his leash is short, and im not adverse to making a snap decision if the results are slow early on.

Thoughts on your own team:
Drafting last usually means something went right the year before, but certainly doesn't ensure the same will happen again, and i could feel the strain with each pick as players on my queue kept getting picked off right ahead of me. On the whole, i still am pleased with what i ended up with. I always view the top half of the draft as a fairly straight forward process. Most players selected are either established known quantities with a history to refer upon for their fantasy contribution, or slam dunk breakthrough candidates who's upside is also already well established. The bottom half is where leagues are won and lost and most of the players i was able to grab i scouted fairly well.

Sleeper pick on your team:
8.01 Vasilevskiy, Andrei (TAM) - Not an under the radar player by any means, but he is able steal starts in Tampa Bay, or become the starter outright as a result of a trade, i'm going to make out like a bandit. Goalies depth importance can't be overstated.

Sleeper pick of the draft:
Two of them:
14.02 Draisaitl, Leon (EDM) - We as a league are going to regret that we let Cobwebs snipe him this late in the draft, adding him to an already strong fantasy team.
15.06 Reinhart, Sam (BUF) - An eye opener of a pick, in the sense that i can't believe someone with so much upside slipped so low. Great pick by wolfer.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted:
TommyD and mailedfoot

Name that player:
10.09 Trocheck, Vincent (FLA) and 10.11 Ekholm, Mattias (NAS). I had my heart pretty set on drafting both of these guys thinking none one was likely considering them yet, seeing them both go in succession was a bummer.

Thoughts on other teams:
PermDude - There's enough offense and balance among the skaters to win. Goalies are the question mark. Not Lundquist, but Anderson and Miller and the teams they play in front.
tommyd - Great draft. Depth everywhere and huge upside. If the goaltending in DET is above average, i think tommyd will win.
RocketeRichard - Another team with a lot of potential if the goalies can keep it afloat. Top end skaters unquestioned.
mailedfoot - Solid draft. Real contender with top notch goalies.
Ira - Strong forwards, a little light on D depth. Goalies good enough to carry to the podium.
Wolfer - At least a dozen players here that i wanted to draft. Brief overview shows a possible lack of PIM's on the whole.
IAC - 3 Headed monster at Centre. At the cost of winger depth. Goaltending a question mark with the uncertainty of Bishops possible trade, MAF losing time to Murray.
Cobwebs - Good overall balance. Contender if Lehner and Smith give him quality starts.
Little M - Eichel injury hurts. The rest of the offense is very deep. Again, goalies will make or break season.
Taxman - PIM's locked up, enough scoring depth if Laine doesn't impress in first season?
CSF - Can't argue with the forwards. Defense last strategy is interesting but risky. However, you can't argue with Sid and Ovi. Perennial contender as a result

Other noteworthy items:

What was he thinking! Worst manager miscue of the draft (let's have some fun with this one):
5.10 Laine, Patrik (WPG) by Taxman - I like Laine, admittedly i don't know as much about his junior exploits as i do someone like Matthews, but i think unless this pick is strictly based upon keeper potential, it may have been a bit too early, with big upside guys like Drouin still available. Watch me be totally wrong about this.

Your best value pick(s): Nick Foligno at 167, if he can bounce back to the form he had a couple of years ago then this is a steal.

Your riskiest pick(s): Shayne Gostibehere in the 3rd round. I've been burned before hopping on second year players who have taken a step back. Hoping his good run last year wasn't a fluke and we don't get a sophmore slump.

Thoughts on your own team: First year in a while where I've been really happy with my keepers. Seems like the last two or three years it's been a toss up for who my third skater would be ( I usually keep a goalie)but with McDavid stepping up I think my keepers are very strong. I would have liked to get a third starting goalie but will have to see how all the backups fair and maybe hope for an injury.

Sleeper pick on your team: I think Goligoski might have a good year.

Sleeper pick of the draft: I think Jeff Skinner is steal in the 15th round. He just didn't fit into my team but great value at that point.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted: Mailedfoot with Kris Letang, I had Letang and Doughty in my Q as the cornerstones of my d.

Thoughts on other teams:
Permdude : Got some great value with Vanek and Keith, needs Anderson to have a big year.

filthy: Took some risk in the +/- category with Marleau, Boedker Reilly but I like the forwards. Goalies will be interesting.

mailedfoot: Solid draft as usual Galchenyuk about to breakout and if Price returns to form could be a strong team.

Ira: Two solid goalies, has some older players which will need to perform like Zetterburg and Iginla.

wolfer: Will need some waiver wire starts in goal. Huberdeau injury sucks. I like the d offensively but might struggle with hits as a team.

IAC: I like the team, will need MAF to bounce back but Duclair, Nash and Backstrom all nice picks. Really solid d corp.

Cobwebs: Lots of youth, the Matthews picks looks genius after the first game. Maybe a year away from having a great keeper core to build on.

LittleM: Solid d, the forwards are good too, ovedrall a contender.

CSF: Still has the best keepers in the league, injury has hit this team already with Quick and Kane out. I love some of the picks here Draisaitl, Drouin. Couple of gambles namely Radulov and Schwartz.

TheDienasty: I like the d (really wanted Chara had him top of my q). Goaltending is strong, overall a very good team.
Other noteworthy items:

What was he thinking! Worst manager miscue of the draft (let's have some fun with this one): Jaden Schwartz by CSF just jumped out at me at the time as being out of place. That's without looking at numbers but I remember thinking to myself that it was a strange pick at the time.

Your best value pick(s): My pick @ 17.10 David Perron, LW, StL who provides help in SOG, Hits, PIM will score 40 points, a dozen coming on PP. Perron is not close to being a star, but @ 3rd to last pick of draft provides outstanding value over the season.

Your riskiest pick(s): Round 1.10 Matt Murray, G, Pit Injured for first month of play and, at best, a time share with Fleury, at worst, relegated to back up goalie. I took this gamble because I was 1 of 2 managers not keeping a goalie (not that my other keepers were that great). I desperately need a franchise goalie. Murray has won a Cup and either he or Fleury should be moved before next September giving Murray a path to work-horse Goalie starts in the foreseeable future.

Thoughts on your own team: Based on the Murray pick, I am playing more for next year than this year. I will probably show up well in the non-scoring cats, but +/-, goalie stats are going to suck in addition to scoring cats unless I catch lightening in a bottle with the kids I drafted (Patrik Laine, Max Domi, Sean Monohan, RNH, Sam Bennett, John Klingberg and Ristolainen), Backes/Roussell
develop scoring skills and Malkin/Parise can turn the clock back.

Sleeper pick on your team: Patrik Laine .. no one seems to expect much out of this years draft class, but Laine is BIG, fast, can skate and has a booming shot. If WPG talent comes together, Laine could be in the Calder Trophy discussion.

Sleeper pick of the draft: Leon Draisaitl .. I picked him up last year and he is the real deal ..stunning he lasted until 14th round.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted:
Super Freak and Dienasty .. both players I missed were my fault for focusing on shit D men instead of emerging talent

Name that player: Super Freak took Zibanejad .. Dienasty took Draisaitl .both players at top of my queue .. Draisaitl hurt because I really thought he would slide to me in round 14 and with queue on auto no delay I instead picked Tom Wilson who extra baggage after I had taken Roussell and Gudas

Thoughts on other teams:

Other noteworthy items: I homing some of the kids come thru as keepers (Malkin and Parise) are getting long in tooth

to be completed

Breaking out of the apathy phase. Wish I chimed in when there was openings to debate our stats. Really find it hard to get excited after having such struggles finding a keeper goalie. Just like the Canucks, I've yet to recover from mishandling the Luongo/Schneider situation. Varlamov was not a good alternative. Going with the Russian tandem last year had me out of it by November. I would not be against going with less goalie categories, but I do like the challenge of trying to find new blood. Others do it, I just keep missing my chances.

Your best value pick(s):
Hoping my best value pick is Calvin Pickard, but feels a bit soon still. Pastrnak or Nylander feel like elite talents, one of them should pay off as late rounders. Pastrnak putting on pounds, still young, already shown flashes- I see him busting out like Spezza around that age. And Nylander in his short stint looked awesome, surrounded by talent and just seems special to me.

Your riskiest pick(s):
Tuukka Rask is my goaltending, so if he goes down, I'm screwed again. The Flyers situation is a coin flip that's destined to lose. And then I got a bevy of backups. Beats choosing Russians again. Or the other platoon options that were available for my second pick. Refusal to draft Varlamov or Bobrovsky again could make the reach for Boone Jenner when they were still available my riskiest pick. Commit to rebuild and go for Hellebuyck might have been better but I kinda like Mason and think Philly could give me a shot. Pretty sure I'll be wrong and streaming again no matter who I picked. Bottom barrel choices are longshots.

Thoughts on your own team:
Liking the odds on some of these guys busting out. Really needing a 2nd goalie to develop to have a chance. Not liking those odds so much. One keepable option by the end of year would be a little victory.

Sleeper pick on your team:
Already mentioned him but Nylander ten rounds after Mathews for what will likely be similar production and keeper potential, can't complain there. One of these goalies needs to be a sleeper so bad, I'm banking on Varlamov being a headcase again and Pickard being the guy, maybe even Mason figuring it out, but skeptical on either. Eberle is one that I didn't mention yet, how has he not had a huge year yet, I've been waiting for ages, the chemistry feels right this year...

Sleeper pick of the draft:
NugentHopkins in the 20th is a decent coin flip. Skinner figures it out one of these years? That's a decent coin flip in the 19th too. I like Ton Wilson 18th for our format. Ryan Miller 16th might be a steal, I refused to consider him as well (personal Canuck goalie blacklist rule still in effect.) Laine in the 9th?? A lot of us blew that one.

Name the manager who stole the one player you had really wanted:
Little M

Name that player:
Hellebuyck- went a couple rounds earlier than I figured.

Thoughts on other teams:
At a quick glance I like Ira, Tommyd, Permdudes teams. Tax if it wasn't for goaltending, but that can change in a month.

Other noteworthy items:
I would not vote against losing one goalie category. GAA/S% correlate very closely, lose GAA wouldn't suck? Or SO are pretty random. Adding offense position and categories helped shift the value a bit, but it's nearly impossible to dig out of a hole currently. Biased opinion of course.

What was he thinking! Worst manager miscue of the draft (let's have some fun with this one):
He might turn out to have a good year as soon as this one still, but it seems like picking Evander Kane was a lost cause from the start. Late enough pick though, so not really a miscue. With my focus on goaltending, it's hard to not notice that falling for the Corey Perry bait forced a bit of gamble on the 2nd goalie slot backing up Lundqvist. Pretty safe gamble with that safety net though. Biggest miscue will turn out to be my refusal to draft Varlamov on multiple passes.

Niskanen heard I dropped him.
Oops.
Smart move said don't add Spurgeon, but he also heard I dropped him. Couldn't resist the hot streak. At least I got one back.
Niskanen had been cold, aka overdue. I had 6 d-men and already over limit, so I felt an urge to make a cut.
Now he's a multi-category beast all of a sudden.
Wish I dropped Orlov, but he had been putting up the numbers lately.
Will wish I dropped Provorov ultimately?
Already kinda wish I kept Scheifele instead of 2 d-men.
Burns was a no-doubter.
But I let some outside rankings sway my feelings about Scheifele into the 'safer' pick of Ekman-Larsson.
Oops.
The Provorov hype is doing the same thing to me.
Doubt I'll keep him but I feel good vibes coming down the stretch.
So I'll keep cutting better players so my gut feelings can be satisfied...

I have some goaltending thoughts and some etc for another post.

Assuming Dienasty referring to this 1/22/17 trade:

Taxman receives:
Paul Stastny StL - C
Jordan Staal Car - C,LW
Tyler Seguin Dal - C,RW

IAC receives:
Evgeni Malkin Pit - C
Leo Komarov Tor - C,LW,RW
Zach Parise Min - LW

For me a future years trade: Malkin is having a (another) career year, but he is 30 and may have 5 or 6 good years left if health holds. Seguin on a multi-year contract with Dallas, having good but not great year, is 24 with his own health problems, but IMHO has more long term upside AND I am huge Stars fan. To make trade palatable, Komarov & Parise included because of good non-scoring stats. Stastny and Stahl included to balance Wings and Centers & wouldn't be missed compared to quality of players received.

Malkin and Seguin are only keeper level talent involved and value of this trade will not be known for several years.

I would like to hear how IAC felt about this trade.

At a glance I found the trade looked a little off, but only because Malkin's been so hot this season after I thought about it for a bit. Might have got more by shopping him in my opinion but the last few season's will tell you what my opinion's worth.

3rd place at the All star break? Not bad. I'm surprised but I've been scooping up some gems to make up for the gems I accidentally cut.

Finding it difficult to come up with proposals when I consider trade offers. Looking at my weaknesses and then looking at the teams with strengths in those areas leads me to realize my only real trade chip is Burns. Or Benn. Or Rask. Maybe Tkachuk or Pastrnak? I don't imagine trading them will get me a return that I value more, in any of those cases. Shaw/Maroon are giving me help where I need it most, so they're pretty off the table. The rest could be moved if there was interest, but again I doubt the return would be something I value more.

I need to be willing to keep tinkering, and try to find value out of the rest, or dive in and make a splash on one of my keeper potentials. Not all that inspired to initiate due to already showing my hand more than any sane person should do, but willing to counter most offers if anyone wants to give me a shot.

Goaltending would be the obvious weakness that might get me to cave on one of my perceived superstars. An upgrade on the 4man dud platoon that I have as Rask's backup would be nice. Trading away Rask would only be considered in a few goalies' cases. No chance I'm trading him if another keeper type isn't coming back.

Ideally I would trade from what I consider depth at D, and maybe throw in a sell low on Eberle, for a goalie. But not seeing an obvious match.

As for our goaltending in general, I have some thoughts that I've been meaning to revisit. Post 12-13 make me think we'd have a couple managers on board to push forward another change for next year? Or start talks now for making official the change for the year after- which is way too much notice, in my opinion.

It's still a league where one bad goaltending decision at draft time can tank one year- at least. Adding hits and a util spot has helped put value back towards offense, but it's still not enough for my liking. For my simple way of looking at it- we have 7 categories for 15 offensive spots, and 4 categories for 2 goaltending spots.

Thankfully we can only keep 1, so we're drafting from the 11-40th type goalies as our backup, or in a scenario where you rely on 2 Russian goalies that both flop- badly- in the same year, you're stuck looking for a starter, and then you're dealing with the 20-40th type goalies as your backup.

I find it difficult to complain because my flat out refusal to give Bobrovsky another chance has led to my not being in 1st? Difference between being stuck with the leftovers: Mason/Neuvirth/Pickard/Domingue that I drafted and going with Bobrovsky instead of Eberle in round8 would have surely helped. Anyone that struggles with goaltending this year could say the same about passing on Bobrovsky. Slipped after a decent WC performance. Number 2 on my blacklist was pretty impossible to overlook. But at the same time, passing on the top of my blacklist- Varlamov continued to be smart. And kinda tanked another franchise that was willing to try him? Pickard was a sorta smart hedge but the team is so bad that I'm starting to wish back the desire for Pickard to steal the job.
Mason has been better than he seems so that would be a key piece to why I'm surprisingly in 3rd, despite my perception that my goaltending is still horrible. Last year still feels too fresh I guess.

And could've done better if I wasn't stubborn kinda stings. Listening to an "expert" rather than my gut at keeper time kinda stings too. OEL over Scheifele will stop haunting me eventually I can hope!?

Back to goaltending- some ideas that might pique some interest... trading for goalie seems difficult at least, more like impossible. All about winning that lotto ticket on a bounceback or scooping up a replacement or believing in a questionable talent. Adding leads us to garbage or bench warmers. Or the odd diamond in the rough. It would be nice if we could stream and find these gems a bit more easily. The current hoard that we experience isn't helping.

Cutting a category, or cutting GP limit for goalies if possible, or cutting 1 of the 2 goalie slots seems to be what my mind keeps circling back to for ideas.

GAA/S% correlate very closely. W/SO also. I would propose cut GAA or SO and lean toward cut SO if I had ultimate decision. All 3 other categories benefit with a shutout anyway. The bonus is a fun twist, but less weight on goalies would help the goalie market perhaps? Or cut GAA because goalies on weaker teams get unfairly punished, also less likely to get SO/W, while strong goalies become that much more valuable! I might lean toward cut GAA the more I consider. If there were more than 12 difference maker type goalies in most seasons, I wouldn't mind as much, but there's generally 7-8 which would require a fortune to trade for, so the bottom feeders have to make huge gambles and/or churn through lottery picks. Which has it's own appeals and creates strategies that I've grown to love...

A 10 category league would feel nice.
7 cats for 15 players allows for a good, varied roster and a nice ability to churn for certain stats. Without feeling like it's pointless because you have 4 cats that are hopeless. 3 hopeless categories is better, and less worth having my entire bench devoted to. Frees up the goalie hoarding problem in this manager's case.

Alternatively, if it's possible to put limit just to goalies of 120GP maybe, I wouldn't be opposed. Makes smart decisions more valuable and eliminates the need to fill 2nd slot with garbage to gain a couple W/SO when GAA/S% is hopeless. Even cutting to 1 goalie slot so we have tough decisions on who to start wouldn't be terrible in my opinion.

Right behind these, the other option, which I really do like, is the current setup. I've overlooked a few free agents that really have done well, so it's hard to say we don't have a chance if we make smarter decisions. Feels mostly like I'm just impatient due to living through the slow rebuild process, but I also think it wouldn't hurt to spice up and try to make it easier to rebuild on the fly and maintain interest in the league from teams that have a rough start. Seems like a team or two checks out early each year, and it's hard to justify putting in effort to go from 12th to 10th anyway. Pride is the key, but gamesmanship says just mail it in and get the best pick.
*Side proposal- give 10th/11th/12th top 3 picks to encourage season long activity.

Anyway...all for now.
Hoping for at least one response!

Since I missed the NA version this year and most every other year before it, I'll try to redeem myself starting now: Happy Chinese New Year everybody!

A Rotoguru league should remain fairly unforgiving is the counter I need to add, as I debate myself.

Remove GAA or SO would still make recovering from mistakes difficult, but feels less daunting in a season where you tank early.

For argument's sake- I don't know the outcome yet- just winging it:
TOP 25 goalies so far- yahoo rank
Could have had 20 with my first pick, and got 1 of them, and then could have had 13 more by my second pick. 3 have small enough sample size to eliminate, but still that's 10 good goalies that I could have had when I picked Kopitar/Okposo, and Jenner/Eberle, as well as Mason as who I settled on. 7 of them could have been scooped up at some point if I had more faith or better timing. Good being in hindsight with doubt still remaining in most of those cases.

TOP 25 by percent owned
14 available with my first pick. 6 until my 2nd pick, 5 by my 2nd goalie. Bobrovsky/Greiss/Miller/Ward/Budaj all could've been grabbed if someone had more faith to dive in right away for Budaj, or dive in earlier in the draft in the other cases.

Flipside, using rough judgment on the term disappointment- 5/10 keeper goalies have disappointed so far. 4/10 top drafted were disappointments so far. 4/next10 drafted were disappointments. 4/next13.

Pretty sure I could've added Budaj if I had any faith. Scooped up while sleeping on it. Quick reminder how this league operates. Accidental pun, I'll take it. Wanted to see Condon play before trying him again this year. He gets a shutout and scooped up right away, of course. Then let him slip by again later on. Was eyeing Grubauer for awhile but kept trying Domingue instead, then too late by the time he started seeing a little bit of icetime. Then let him slip by again later on. Good chance at Johnson, but he is cooling off lately. Could've swooped in for a few decent stretches of Darling, but it never seemed built to last. Saros looks like he could be like a lot of these cases. Not a lot of options to recover from finding a landmine, but enough if you have a good sense of things.

Ward was scooped up right away and brutal right away, the patience with him turned out decent. Miller/Raanta/Howard could be argued as best draft values considering the difficulties finding consistent options to pick from.

No focus or conclusion here, but I find it interesting anyway.

Some time to consider propose some change to our goalie position?? Seems a lot of indifference out there??

After a bit of time, I think cutting down one goalie category, and having it be: GAA would be my ideal.

Wouldn't really make a huge difference on our standing, but I feel like cutting a goalie category would open up a bit of goalie movement in our league. Nearly impossible to dig out of a hole in our current position. Impressive that CSF has such a strong team with such poor goaltending. I'd keep churning, but is a couple points really worth it, I feel ya.

Thanks, at this point chasing a win or a shutout with backups and subpar starters will not make any gains in the chase for the top spot. I'll try to hold with offense. If it doesn't work out then I get a better shot at an early draft position which can be used to grab solid starter for next year.

I'm not doing my own argument any favours here lately. Scooped up Miller and Darling recently off waivers. And just grabbed a shutout off free agent!

Back to back scenario with a guy that just had a shutout in his last start, and a shelling, and a shutout before that. 2 out of 3 shutouts is worth a ticket in my book. I'll take a shot with Hutton for a few days at least...BINGO! Right away! Wait for the shelling next time....

Within a given week, I'll go from hating my goaltending to loving it and back at least once. Loving it today.

Last year was just hating it, all the time. Wish I had shut it down in hindsight.

Deep down, I think and wish I can win this one still... but realistically at this point, I hope that you lose 2 points in shutout category, and I pass you for 3rd place by 1 point. hahha.

Cheers.

Congrats to foot on another big win.
2 wins in 3 years is approaching Dienasty territory. The bar of 5 wins in 12 years is in reach. I'm still stuck at 2 wins after 9 years and feeling like I might have peaked early.
Glad I got another bronze. Streaming backup goalies paid off, who'd've thunk it. Not a lot of competition on free agency but I'll still take it. 6 podiums in 9 seasons here is no shame.
Fun year everyone.
My goal is to make a trade next year!!
99.9% sure I'm keeping Rask, Benn, Burns, Pastrnak.
Cheers all.

Thanks everyone! Got off to a great start and things were pretty smooth all the way. Only real hiccup was second half goalie play but had big enough margin of error to get past that. Looking forward to watching some playoff hockey over the next few weeks, enjoying the baseball season, and before you know it, it will be hockey time again!

Sounds like you don't expect your fave team to make it very far champ?! A couple weeks of playoff hockey... I'm expecting to get sucked into a couple months of playoff action.

Canuck fan if you made me confess. Forever hoping for a Canadian team to win it again. Some years I'll stop following playoffs after the Canadian teams are all eliminated, but last few years without any strike has me back in full fan mode. If only the Canucks would decide what to do with themselves. Wouldn't mind seeing Burrows go on a run despite how much of a pest he is. Check out his letter to Canuck fans if you haven't yet, excellent read that changed my perspective on the guy.

Thanks for running this league commish. (Your 3 titles should have been at least mentioned when I referred to titles in earlier post. Props!)

My opinion on changing any categories is still flip flopping back and forth, but deep down I feel that one less goalie category would make for an extra competitive league. Perhaps change a D slot to another UTIL/BN or G is something crazy I'm also gonna suggest. Just rambling though, no need to respond really.

Seems everyone's happy with status quo from the previous lack of response. But hopefully someone gets a kick out of my thought process. Cheers everybody.

Oh and one less BN to improve FA options wouldn't be so bad. Lot of inactive teams leaving some good options on the bench when some teams in the race could have better FA options to choose from. I use FA as my BN mostly anyway if anyone hasn't noticed yet. Sometimes it backfires but not enough to make me stop.

Or we could have a transaction limit to keep me from going overboard?!! I'd welcome the challenge and it would even the playing field but that's said mostly in jest. An active league is more fun, no joke there.

Logic behind change D slot to UTIL/BN/G is that teams don't seem to hit the D limits. Extra Util would be sweet. Teams tend to go over on forward limits still.

Summary on my stance- remove GAA, add UTIL*1, remove D*1, remove BN*1

All for now, promise!

29 - Yes, well should have said a couple of months I guess. My team didn't make the playoffs this year, so that was not an issue. But I have been following the action and must say there has been some good stuff going on. In the first round I was mainly focused on NYR-MON and WAS-TOR and both match-ups were very entertaining. The Predators taking down the Hawks in four was a stunner and here comes Edmonton. Just not enough time to keep up with it all.

I think yesterday's Ottawa comeback victory might have raised the bar however. A classic playoff game with great end to end action and Pageau has the game of his life. I have to admit there is a part of me that wants to jump on the Sens bandwagon. Was hoping the Caps would even up the series with the Pens in the nightcap but they fell short; looks like they are in trouble now.

Yeah me too. Great finals. I really thought Game 1 has influenced how this series has played out.
The defining moment imho was the Preds disallowed goal due to the offside call. GARBAGE! That rule needs to go. I really think Nashville would be champs if that goal was not overturned.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that goal was disallowed...but Nashville clearly wasn't prepared for game 5...hopefully they get their mojo back on home ice and we can see a game 7

Congrats foot!

I'd be happy to drop the GAA category as it was earlier. Goalies carry a bit too much weight in most fantasy leagues than I prefer personally. I'd also consider limiting the goaltender position from two starters to one. Sounds a bit extreme I'm sure.

Also happy to replace one of the D positions to a Util. Those D-slots become quite the burden, and it's really scraping to the bottom of the barrel when you're looking for d-depth from the waiver wire.

Also is fun to look at the first several posts in this thread about the draft re-cap. I remembered mailedfoot giving me the 'what was he thinking?' pick with Zetterberg. Funnily enough he had a 68 point season with a surprising +15 on that terrible Wings team :P Guess he made up for that prediction with his Skinner value pick. Nice.
