A new hockey season just around the corner, and that means get those notepads out, dust off those spreadsheets, it's time to fire up RGFHL!
At the conclusion of the past season, our long time league commissioner (and 3x League Champion) CSF remarked that he would like to take a step back from his duties and hand over the reigns to someone else to manage the league. If our league will accept, i'd be happy to step in and carry the torch. Assuming no objections, and CSF makes a timely return and is able to hand over the keys, I'd like to begin with laying out housekeeping items and start with a league review below:
RGFHL Year 18 - 2022-2023
Roster positions to draft:
3 C, 3 LW, 3 RW, 5 D, 1 Util, 2 G, 4 bench.
Miscellaenous positions:
1 IR position for IR players
1 IR+ position for day to day, and out type players.
Draft Order is the reverse of the final finish from last year.
Forwards/Defensemen Stat Categories:
Goals (G), Assists (A), Plus/Minus (+/-), Blocks (BLK), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shots on Goal (SOG), Hits (HIT)
Goaltenders Stat Categories:
Wins (W), Goals Against Average (GAA), Save Percentage (SV%), Saves (SV)
Housekeeping items:
1. We have one confirmed team vacancy (Tommyd) that would be best addressed ASAP (i'll create a separate thread about this). Anyone reading this is welcomed to share their interest in this thread or the recruitment thread.
2. Any suggestions for league settings changes (ie. scoring, roster size, etc) are welcomed.
3. Key NHL dates - Opening night: October 7, 2022, Regular season end: April 13, 2023
4. Key RGFHL dates - Keepers submission deadline: TBD, Fantasy draft start date on Draftime: TBD
5. Roll call - Confirmed returnee managers please check-in. As of this post, the below managers have checked-in:

Welcome back, CSF. Thanks for the update, if what I read is right and you’ll be around to get us launched into the season, then I’d be happy to help steer the ship after that as we move along, and welcome Taxman as a tag team partner as well :)

Looking forward to another year!
Not something I'm willing to fight very hard for, but I still think removing +/- will offer a larger pool of players to choose from, as its a shame that certain star-level players on bottom-feeders get sewered out of relevance. Listening to the Keeping Karlsson fantasy hockey podcast I heard an interesting take that what they did was remove +/- AND PP points (to level each other out).
With that being said I still think goaltending stats are already over weighted in the settings, so taking away skater categories would only further the imbalance unless it was paired with removing GAA for instance or adding a stat like faceoff wins.
Most just food for thought but I'm perfectly happy continuing with the current categories.

I've assigned both you and Taxman co-commish duties. You'll be able to navigate around and familiarize yourself with some of the commish features.
Once the draft has begun, I'll assign the commish duty over to Taxman and then he'll be in charge of the renewals, audits, and the other stuff that needs to be done whenever they arise.
Tax and I have been emailing each other the last few years and he's been the one nudging me along. Kudos to him, and I probably owe him a beer or two.

I was hoping we could fill TommyD's managerial spot by now. We are getting near crunch time for the draft.
We could drop his team if there is no interest and go with 11. It's been done before. It would give Perm Dude a bump and the bottom 4 wouldn't be hurting either.

Re:6 - it doesn’t seem Little M has checked in yet. And given the lack of feedback in the team vacancy thread, there’s a distinct possibility we run with 10 teams this year? There are also a few hockey forums and Reddit Fantasy Hockey we could throw feelers on as well to get the league rounded out.
The NHL season begins on Oct 7 with two teams playing a game in Prague, while the rest of the league gets going on Oct 11, so in the event were able to add two more managers late and draft start times and finish dates run past Oct 7 it’s only a minimal compromise IMO.

Maybe we try to get keepers by the weekend while we wait.
Whether we bring in a new team from wherever or contract to 10 or 11 this year is fine by me. Trying to keep it 12 feels best if we can have that option.

Gang, Taxman is requesting the Keepers be submitted via the Yahoo league page. You can do so by heading to your team page, and clicking the link near the top that says "choose your keeper players" to select and submit by the midnight, Sept 28 deadline (or your keepers will be selected for you).

A late FYI, 8am-4pm pacific weekdays are rough for me.
Added players to my queue last night but didn't have time to sort it yet.
Notifications don't help when the time crunch is in play. Checked before school (still wasn't up), then don't really look at personal stuff until after school. Each day.
Keep in mind when feeling impatient, that some of us have busy work weeks sometimes and haven't had a spare moment since the draft started.
Give us the first weekend to organize a queue before getting carried away with the impatience please.
Thanks for waiting on my picks the past 2 days, and extra thanks to those that opened up their queue to keep things moving a little bit around some of our busy managers. Still too early for me to be trusting an unsorted queue. After this weekend will be on autopick here.
We can rush late rounds easily if it comes to it. Rushing things on the early rounds is silly.

Wolfer your selection of " Ek, Joel Errickson" is a duplication and you must make a different selection. I have stopped the draft until you make that selection. This is a Draftime screw up (listing same player with differing last names). I will contact Fred and let him know.

Thank you Wolfer. Not your bad. Fred (Draftime) mogul/creator/administrator) screwed up by adding Eriksson Ek a second time with a different configuration of his reallt strange name.
In 20+? years of using Draftime, first time I've seen this type of problem.
We are good to go now. Ira is up in last round of draft.

On the ribbon across the top do you have access to the Draft menu item? From there you there is an option to see Draft Results.
I will press the button to begin the season tomorrow morning.

Thank you all for the kind words! I really enjoy this league, as it’s the only hockey keeper league I play. And the competition keeps me entertained and engaged during the cold winter months. This is a good group of managers and I’m humbled to have cracked the code this season. Having surprised myself in assembling the winning team, I decided to take a look back to see how it happened…
After acquiring Toral's franchise in 21-22, Matt Tkachuk is the only original player left. I acquired Mitch Marner from Cobwebs before the 2021 trade deadline. And then drafted Elias Pettersson 1.11 and Jack Hughes 4.06 (somehow?!?) in draftime that year. These were the keepers I went with heading into the 22-23 season. I recall being conflicted about cutting Jack Eichel who had finished last season strong, so I was excited to get him back at 1.02. However, little did I know my best picks would be Jason Robeterson at 3.02, Linus Ullmark at 7.02, Adrian Kempe at 10.01, and Vitek Vanecek at 13.02. However, I also rostered some busts along the way, players like Jeannot, Zegras, Power, and Knight, while productive at times, performed well below their ADP.
And now, with the summer upon us, this isn’t goodbye, but hello to RGFHL Trade Season! I’ve listed way more than 4 keepers above, and while I would support a league vote for more keepers, I can’t keep all of them!
