0 Subject: This Year's Sleepers/Cheapies

Wow, when i logged in and checked out the prices for the first time today, i noticed that all the players are so damn expensive!! so i thought i'd just start this year's thread for the sleepers of the NHL. I'll start with one of my own:

Milan Kraft

I got info on him from Rotonews. He plays for the Pens and he could possibly play on the big front line with Jagr. He could be another Keith Jones type player who just gets a ton of points because he's playing with all-stars. Don't get me wrong though, he's supposed to be a real good prospect, a good rookie of the year candidate.

Too bad SW doesn't have him listed.

Eric Lindros looks like a sleeper. In fact, he's probably been sleeping since Stevens tagged him in the playoffs. A little pricey at $8.32M though. ;-)

Check out Martin Skoula from Colorado @ 1.57M, He should see some PP time since Ozolinsh is gone, and Jere Lehtinen looks to be a bargain @ 3.22M, he lost alot of time due to injury last season and if he's 100 percent he should see some real quality icetime again this season

Daryl Sydor is cheap right now, but he may not start the season. He will be a good pickup maybe a little after the season starts and he comes back from his injury

I like Jamie McLennan of the Wild. Only $3m for a starting goalie, and if he can play like Dunham did when Nashville started, there will be high profit potential. My 2 pence...

I agree on the Skoula statement , nice price for what he should produce this coming season .

I like Todd Warriner who's on Tampa Bay. Since the trade from Toronto, he had been producing well towards the end of the season playing with Vincent Lecalvier and Mike Johnson. At 2.717 SWD, he could be a decent point producer at little cost.

mclennan will get his points, but will take a hit from all the losses he's gonna get with a bad team.

Whenever the Sedin's are IPO'd, they should be nice cheapies, because they will be given a lot of ice time in Vancouver. However, knowing SW, they will be priced too high for rookies, and won't be that much of a bargain.

For a sleeper stud, look for Yashin to have a monsterous year, to make up for his decision to walk last year. He may be traded though, since Ottawa does need a good goalie since Barasso won't re-sign.

Strike One: "It doesn't look like Barrasso, an unrestricted free agent, will return, so there will be major goaltending questions with journeyman Patrick Lalime as the possible starter." courtesy of ESPN.com

First off, is Dunham gonna be 100%?
and also, with the signing of Burke who will be #1 in Phoenix till Khabi comes back? Esche or Burke(7 mil?????????)?

I was just wondering if starting a day late would be the way to go?

With most of the early money makers going to be rookies not yet IPO'd, you can wait a day, and pick them up if they're IPO'd immediately after the first roster freeze on the 4th.

All you would be missing is the Colorado-Dallas game on the 4th, so it wouldn't be a huge point disadvantage.

The only drawback is that the IPO's will probably happen on the Monday when new trades are doled out, on the 9th I believe. However, if it's just sacrificing a day to take a risk, I'd be willing to try it out.

Another sleeper I see is Sandis Ozolinsch on Carolina at 4.95 million, much cheaper than what his price was last season. Although, Carolina has only 1 game the first week of the season. Speaking of schedules, the Dallas Stars start off nicely, with 4 games the first week

the first day of the season there is only one game, avs at the stars, so if you stay away from those teams you might be able to pull off skipping the first day without penelty, of course the 4th is a wednesday, and i think trade come out on thursdays, so the first ipo date would be critical. also, if they ipo guys too much $$$ then you screwed trying to put together a team.

i don't think that ipo prices will be too bad. the problem is the daily price updates. *%&#$@*#& smallworld! if you go on a vacation... you're screwed. i wish they didn't do this!
in terms of the blues and their 5 games- did you see how $$$ they all are? Jeeezz
some good picks might be some of the Det wingers (ok $ but will they produce? watch the pre season)
and my personal theory is don't spend a lot of $ on D to start, but there are a few really good D-men in the $3-3.5 range (yes cheaper too)

From Smallworld: ATTENTION: Due to NHLPA regulations, SW is not allowed to have rookies in the fantasy hockey game until AFTER they have played their first game.

I guess that invalid strategy is dead, now. I think that I'm going to load up on some St. Louis/Dallas players and deal them away after their early schedules and into the Sedin's, Kraft and possibly Depietro on the Islanders if he's named the #1 goalie.

your right, i hadnt caught that. that is going to make it a real pain to draft a squad, and i think you'll have to save trades to jump on the rookies, who should go up even more because no one will be able to pre-draft them...

I think hoops boy made a good point, we'll have to save trade so when the rookies got IPO, everyone will jump on him to make money, as money train in baseball and we don't have enough money to not considering the rookies....

I agree with Team AA, we shoudn't spend alot of money on defenseman at the begenning of the season, concentrate on a goalie and forward...

I think we'll have to work really hard to find those cheaper/sleepers....

Let's not forget Brendan Morrow on the Stars, he's a bit highly priced (4.346 mil) but plays a lot of games during the opening week and really impressed people during the playoffs last year.

does anyone know who's has the honor of centering for Selanne and Kariya in Anaheim??? I think there's a three way battle between Rucchin, Cullen (I think that's his name), and Titov. I read somewhere that if Rucchin wins his old job back them Titov will get to play with the 2nd line. I'm thinking of buying Titov, so I really hope that he wins out against the others.

At goalie, check out Pit's goalie ( I dunno how to spell his name, so I won't even try). Their first 2 games are against Nashville. Do I really need to say more ?

And another guy that I'm wondering about. What's up with Byron Dafoe? Any word would be appreciated.

Frogger according to rotonews Byron Dafoe Sep. 15 Dafoe is still recovering from knee surgery and will miss Friday's exhibition game, the Boston Herald reports. Follow up on his progress before you consider investing in what could be damaged goods.

Aubin is unsigned but made significant strides in trying to sign a 1 year deal with the Pens. (also according to rotonews

Dipietro pulled his groin , out 15 days . I think the isles wanted him to play at least 3 -4 exhb. games and then use that as a barometer as to whether they'll keep him in the big leagues or not for this season . looks like the minors for ''the rick '' , at least for the first part of the season anyways .

A nice bargain is Center Jason Krog @ $0.750 SWD plays for the Isles, and should see nice time and production. He's a Hobie Baker award winner with nice scoring touch and speed.

I also think that Pavel Brendl, when IPO'd by Smallworld, will make a big splash for the NY Rangers and managers wallets.

I don't know their prices, but here are a couple of guys to keep an eye on for either Smallworld Bargains or deep Roto sleepers:

Jiri Fischer - defenseman for Wings. Starting out as the 5th defenseman, but has been a stud so far. Bulked up, has huge offensive talent. Injury to one of the Top 4 defenseman could give him the opportunity for a big year ... or he could work his way into the mix anyways.

Mathieu Dandaneult - speedy youngster has been practicing with Shanahan and Yzerman quite a bit. Bowman loves to mix up the lines a bunch (Bad for him) but get this ... in many leagues he may qualify as a defenseman, because Bowman has used him there from time to time. He could produce 40-50 points, which is a goldmine for the position. Your fellow leaguers will kill you if you snag him on defense.

Brendan Morrison - this guy isn't the biggest player, but the he has bigtime skills. Former Hobie Baker winner was listed as competing with Patrick Elias for a spot one the 2nd/3rd line at the beginning of last year, for what its worth. He also attended the illustrious University of Michigan, making him extra-cool.

Boyd Deverioux - probably worth a look as well, but I don't really know a lot about him. He is unofficially slated to take over for Igor Larionov as the 3rd line center, and was a former 1st round pick. He seems like the type of player that could florish when surrounded by the talented Red Wing corps.

Tommy Albelin is looking real good in the preaseason for calgary. He had an impressive 4 point night yesterday against Toronto. Hopefully, he will get the same amount power play time in the regular season as well.

Oleg Saprykin, a defenseman also on Calgary, has been having a good preaseason as well. Some people think he has a shot at the Calder, but he isn't absolutely assured a spot on the team just yet.

These two players are not IPO'ed yet but may deserve some consideration when they are;

I have heard that he may be centering the Jagr/Hrdina line so enough said!

For your information, Jean Sebastion Aubin has been signed by the Pens for a one year contract worth $700,000. I guess the Pens front office won this battle as he wanted $1.2 million.

However, a word of caution, he's only getting one week of training camp, and although he most likely will start immediatly since the Pens got no other good goalies (with Tugnutt gone now), he may be a bit rusty. I don't think that should dissuade you though, its not me, because he's pretty good, and at only at 6.950 M, he's pretty cheap for a starter

I see Dandaneult mentioned as a sleeper here. Some may have noticed that even Smallworld lists him at D. Sounds like this might make him a great sleeper. He'll get the offensive numbers on your Smallworld blueline. Anyone else see this as a positive?
