Good Draft all!
1The Dienasty

Your Best Value pick:
Pascal LeClaire (10.05) - I got Martin Gerber last year in RGFHL 1 in the 10th round on a flier, hoping to gain a little goaltending depth without burning a high end pick in the process. I think it turned out well. I'm going a similar gamble a year later can pay off again. LeClaire is in a similar situation that Gerber was in last year, playing on a team that really had nowhere to go but up. 60-65 starts, 25-30 wins is all i need, anything more is gravy.

Your Riskiest Pick:
Markus Naslund (3.08) - Banking on a big rebound year from him, as i passed up on a lot of other quality options here in round 3... A 100pt season isn't out of the question, but i think a more realistic projection is somewhere around 85-90, and anything below 85 would make him a bust this high. The fact that ive given him a window of 85-100 pts, makes him high risk.

Thoughts on your own team:
My team came out no where close to what i thought it would look like, as i don't have one single player returning from last year, but the quality of drafting from my opponents has something to do with it too. I tried to not let it affect my drafting strategy, but the keeper aspect did force me to make a couple of picks based on it. I did my best to draft to win in the present, but if my potential keepers don't become big time players, im going to be playing big time catch up for a while.

Biggest sleeper on your team:
Pascal LeClaire (10.05) - Some hockey publications have put Columbus in the playoffs, some in the top 5 in the West. A playoff berth almost gurantees 30+ wins, and if that's the case, then LeClaire, a 10th rounder is without doubt my biggest sleeper.

Thoughts on other teams:

1st - C.SuperFreak
Excellent top end scoring with good depth at all spots, and goaltenders on the top 3 teams in the Western conferece. Oh, and having Malkin and Ovechkin as keepers isn't that bad either.
2nd - The Beezer
Should own goal scoring cat with good mix of PIMs. Solid goalies with solid regular season stats.
3rd - Little M
Great value offence picks from 5-9. Kipper and gerber between the pipes.

Best value pick: Maxim Afinogenov. Getting a young point-a-game guy in the eighth round was by far the best value pickup for me.

Your Riskiest Pick: Sean Avery. Top PIM guy, should challenge for the Bruiser Trophy again. Last year had a decent offensive year as well. Took him much earlier than I should have if he reverts to just a one-dimensional guy. But if he gets me 40+ points his draft spot will be worth it.

Thoughts on my team: Young, young, young! An almost all-or-nothing group of skaters. Afinogenov, Crosby, Boyes, etc. should make for a very exciting season.

Haven't had a chance to look at the other teams too much yet--but I will.

Best Value Pick Ryan Whitney. A 40 point, 100 PIM defenseman in the 19th round.

Riskiest Pick Martin Gerber. If he stays as the number 1 goalie in Ottawa, then he will be a good pick. However, if he has a couple of bad games, I can see Emery getting a lot of starts.

Thoughts on my team I picked 5th and had 4 forwards that I was looking at picking in the first round and they went top 4, so I switch to picking a goalie. This worked out well because it started a run on goalies and I wanted at least one top goalie. I didn't really pick with the keepers in mind. I do have Kiprusoff and Phaneuf and hopefully one of my forwards will come through (Jokinen?)

Thoughts on other teams I haven't had a chance to go through rosters in detail, but there were some interesting position selections. Three teams are carrying 6 centers. Two teams only have 2 LW and one team has six LW (trade possibilities?). Three teams only have four defensemen. It will be interesting to see what happens when waivers open up. Are teams going to stay with their current set-up or will there be a flurry of drop/adds?

Best Value on My Team: I like Wade Redden in the 6th, Mats Sundin in the 7th round, Brian Rafalski in the 11th and Shawn Horcoff in the 18th.

Riskiest Pick: Vesa Toskala in the 4th round. I really hope he emerges as the number 1 in San Jose. Whoever is number 1 there is in for a nice fantasy season.

Thoughts on My Team: After last year's disastor, I wanted to stay with players from a variety of winning teams. I wanted to make sure I locked up a great goalie early in the draft, kept my eye on the future with young players, but not totally ignore older players, realizing I only keep 3 anyways. I like how the end of my draft came out, but found players always being taken only a few picks ahead of where I planned to take them. (Most notably Sergei Gonchar,Tomas Kaberle, Ryan Whitney, and Eric Lindros.

Once I enter the teams I will get a better idea of how I see the other teams shaking up.

I will enter the teams Tuesday morning by noon(due to a long set of meetings at work tomorrow) and then I will set the waiver period to end Thursday.

Best Value: I think Andy McDonal in the 9th is a nice pick up he should have another good year.

Riskiest Pick: Probably Nittymaki, who knows what's going on in Philly but I definitely think I picked him too high.

Thoughts on my team: I really tried to get players entering break out times in there careers- 3rd or 4th season and on winning teams to help their stats. I find the draft gets tougher as you go along but I usually seemed to get the player that I wanted, if that's a good sign.

Thoughts on other teams: No team stands out really.

Your Best Value pick:
5.04 Evegeni Malkin, I can’t believe he lasted until the 5th round. Hopefully his injury doesn’t keep him out long term.
7.04 Martin Havlat, strictly for goals and assists. His +/- might just kill me.
12.09 Miroslav Satan, I’m sure this guy will have a great year after a so so year.

Your Riskiest Pick:
17.04 Nikolai Zherdev. Last year in Datsyuk slipped way down to the 9th round with a similar issue. I just hope Zherdev comes back.
Jeff Friesen sucks. I was just trying to backfill a position. He’ll be one of the first to go.

Thought on your own team:
As always, you never get the draft position you want, the players you want and you’re are never truly satisfied with your team until the you check the standings at the end of the season hope you are number 1. Last year I finished a distant 2nd to The Dienasty. I finished 2nd because of 3 factors, goaltending, a strong offensive defensive corps and overloading the center position (too many centers and not enough wingers) It cost me big time. I scrambled all season with my offensive positions (Mostly because wingers where at a premium and centermen where a dime a dozen). And believe me, they offended me in more ways than one. Lessons learned from last year.
Don’t overload the center position. Draft a strong core of offense, get a competitive goaltending trio, less focus on stacking the blue line.

I believe that I had accomplished the first objective with my team. I also selected players that would fit my positions rather than just drafting the best point player available in a given round. The second objective could be boom or bust. The Goalie runs really made it difficult. Vokoun has been cleared to play and hopefully he can overcome his injury and play as well as he did last year. Nabokov and Giguere are battling for starting positions. If one of them wins the position outright I’ll be in good shape otherwise I’ll have to keep my eye on the news to see who’ll get the nods. I’m a set it and forget it kind of manager so this has the possibility of getting ugly. I’m not worried about the d this year. I believe I did pick up 4 solid players and if there’s a problem I’ll be scouring the waiver wire for an emergency pickup.

It's safe to say that I drafted with a keeper mentality in mind and barring a career ending injury my keepers at the moment are: Ovechkin, Malkin, Vokoun

Biggest sleeper on your team:
Perhaps this is a stretch but Matthew Lombardi has been pegged to center the top line in Calgary. That’s Iggy and Tanguay, so if this line clicks I could get some pretty good points out of this guy.

Thoughts on other teams:
Barilko6 drafted a well rounded team this year. The Dienasty is also a threat another solid team. LittleM who picked up Kipper, is also a threat. Cobwebs has a nice dash of offense. Philflyboy is deep with the d. Taxman’s pickup of Antti Miekennan was huge, okay not huge but I wanted him. I had him pegged in round 17 but was reluctant to keep picking up wingers and then PermDude snagged Morris right after that. I fell asleep at the wheel in round 3 and really wanted Nash. I had him pegged there and I really don’t know why I selected Richards. Sure hope it turns out okay. If Wolfer’s combo of Weight, Guerin, Samsonov, and Yashin play up to their potentials he could do some serious damage in the standings. ! I also liked Hubbles pickup of Nolan. That pickup could be a huge steal.
As always the managerial crop is top notch and everyone really did a fine job of drafting. I could write on and on about this because I really was struggling everytime a player went off my list. The draft was very quick.

Predicted First, Second, and Third place teams.

My Best Value picks:

4.07 Cristobal Huet - Shutouts are precious in this league. Landing a guy who posted 7 of them last year in 36 starts should help me improve my showing in this category compared to last season.

10.06 Vaclav Prospal - Multi-position player who was a key guy on my team last year. 80 point players are always welcome on my team.

My Riskiest Pick:

3.06 Rick Nash - I reached here looking for an impact guy that could be a long-term keeper if he realizes his potential. Injuries have been a bugaboo for him but there's no doubt that he can score in bunches when he's on.

Thoughts on my own team:

I feel I've put together a fairly well-rounded group that will emphasize goals scored and shots taken. Last year Turco's slow start and Belfour's disappearance hurt me - hopefully I won't get bitten by that again.

Biggest sleeper on your team:

I don't really have any guys I would call sleepers - the second half of my draft was dominated by veteran guys who have produced in the past. That could prove problematic, but hopefully I can jump on guys that no one can predict before others can do so.

Thoughts on other teams

The draft really seemed to tighten up after round 12 - it seemed like all the guys at the top of my list started vanishing then and it didn't really stop until the last couple of rounds. Before then, I thought youth was being valued too much for a keep 3 league, so the vets that I was eyeing tended to linger longer than they probably would have last year.

Superfreak's team looks great to me if he hits on a #2 goalie - very imposing. Same with Taxman, Dienasty, and Cobwebs. Little M grabbed 2 guys I would have loved to have in Kipper and Phaneuf. Hard to pick a favorite.

Predicted First, Second, and Third place teams

Well, me - otherwise I would have picked different players, no? :)
Dienasty - I didn't like his team last year, then his team started not liking me back a whole lot more. Gotta give the champ the benefit of the doubt.
Superfreak - I think he'll get a second goalie and make a run.

Got an early start this morning, so I have entered all the rosters. I will start the league up in about 5 minutes, and set the waivers for 2 days.

Good Luck All!

Alright...I've entered the rosters, but for some reason none of the available players are on waivers...it just looks like they are ready and able to be picked up right now.

Anyone help me on this?

Dang...ok, I realized what happened.

I accidently put all undrafted players as automatic free agents. (which I can't undo)

So...to alleviate the problem, for the first round of waiver claims, you must email me your waiver claim by Thursday NOON EST, and then I will go through the claims. The highest ranking waiver claim, once a claim has been made, will drop down to 12. DO NOT MAKE ANY ROSTER CHANGES BEFORE THE WAIVER CLAIM ON THURSDAY!!!

Thanks!

What some of you might not realize, is that Yahoo finally added LW to Patrick Elias' eligibility.

I sent them 1,203 emails...lol

Thoughts on teams now that I can visualize them more:

Philly: Very solid offensive core, lots of goals in this group. Not entirely sold on the goalies, will need someone to step up. (Raycroft has looked good in the preseason, would be willing to trade for him...lol)

Dienasty: Another good set of goal scorers, not relying on sleepers to step up. Not sure about the defense and the goaltending though, well outside of the number 1 in the league this year, Brodeur. Although after last year's domination, I am willing to give this team the benefit of the doubt...lol

Little M: Very solid team. For my team's sake, I hope Gerber earns the backup spot in Ottawa. If Gerber is number 1, this team could be big. No real "huge" names on the offense, but as long as all his players repeat last year's performance, this should be a top 3 team.

Will do the rest soon!

Best Value pick:
Peter Forsberg (5.03)
A potential 1st round pick. With a new pair of feet, a healthy Foppa will dominate and rack up assists and PPPs. His new role as captain will only motivate him even more.

Riskiest Pick:
Kristian Huselius (13.03)
What was I thinking? The possibility of Huselius playing with Tanguay and Iginla made me drool, and the thought of him playing on the 1st PP-unit with Phaneuf made me pull the trigger. But it's probably just a wasted pick. I don't even like the guy, and now I'm stuck with him:(

Thoughts on my team:
Going into the draft I had 5 goals:
1. Get a stud skater to anchor my offense as my 1st pick.
2. Don't end up with Kolzig as my 2nd goalie.
3. Get 4 solid D-men, and a sleeper D in the late rounds.
4. Get players that I like even if I have to reach a bit.
5. Go with youth as much as possible.
Getting Huselius obviously nullified #4, but I managed to fulfill my other goals.
Having 2 young stoppers in Lehtonen and Toivonen, and Legace as backup is a bit risky, but it's not easy being on the back end of 2 goalie runs, I could have gotten PermDude's oldtimer tandem of Hasek/Roloson but decided to avoid the injury risk.
My team is young, but I managed to get some good sleepers in Semin, Eaves, Krajicek, and Kessel. I was upset when PermDude stole Lupul from me, so to make me feel better I reached for one of my favorite players Niklas Kronvall, who I'm expecting big things from this season. Other players who got away were, Brule, Kotalik, Horton, Murray, Ruutu. My team lacks some PIM-punch, but I'll have to deal with that later in the season.

Biggest sleeper on my team:
Phil Kessel (21.03)
If he makes the team he'll be on one of the top 2 scoring lines. Great offensive potential and picking him in the last round seemed worth it, though I probably should have played it safe and gone with Michalek. It will be fun to see what Kessel can do if he gets the chance.

Thoughts on other teams:
The Dienasty has a solid team all across the board, a bit boring though without any big sleepers.
Philflyboy has a nice mix of players.
Hubble and LittleM have solid goalies and offense but lacks a stud skater to give them an edge.
PermDude has some interesting sleepers, and will be a contender if some of them fall in and if his goalies survive the season.
Barilko6 has a great team if he can trade for some decent LWs. I like his D.
The Beezer has some players that need to bounce back for him to be a contender, but the core is solid.
C.Superfreak is one of my favorite teams, he needs a 2nd goalie and his RWs to produce though.
Taxman and tommyd have a mixed bag of tricks, could go either way.
Wolfer started off well getting Jagr and Cheechoo, but his shaky goalie situation may cost him.

Predicted First, Second, and Third place teams.
Without looking at projected stats, I'll just guess the order.
1. The Dienasty
2. The Beezer
3. PermDude

I do have some extra strength at the goalie position, and would be willing to package a goaltender and another player in a 2 for 1 deal to upgrade my forwards or defense.

Just to add a few things about my draft:

Sergei Fedorov's injury basically altered my finishing strategy from the moment i learned of it. Two rounds would pass before i found out how long he would be out, and by then i had already shifted focus to re-enforcing my Center position by immediately grabbing on of the type of players that i swore id stay away from in Saku Koivu. He's an injury risk, mid range point producer who's basically one dimensional. But he can put up scoring numbers, is slotted to play on the top line and top PP, and his potential 70 points slots in well with what i needed to offset Fedorov's 70-80. With that Koivu pick, i ended up missing out on some players that i really wanted, like Vanek, Horton and Wolski. But i feel i made the best pick given the potential situation with Fedorov missing a lot of time, which he thankfully won't be afterall.

Someone made a comment about my lack of youth or exciting players, and he's spot on. I had intended to mix in as many quality up and comers as i reasonably could, but found down the stretch that proven players stood out more than what was remaining. I still feel however that there are some quality sleepers left in the FA pool, which should make for some interesting manuvering over the rest of the season.

Are we going to get a rationale thread going for this year?
