While watching the Duke-UNC game, I got to thinking about the top 10 rivalries in sports. I looked up a couple of lists and didn't quite agree...
http://www.askmen.com/toys/top_10/6b_top_10_list.html
http://msn.espn.go.com/endofcentury/s/other/bestrivalries.html
Obviously this is subjective, but here's mine...
1. Duke-UNC 2. Yankees-Red Sox 3. Michigan-Ohio St. 4. Redskins-Cowboys 5. Auburn-Alabama 6. Giants-Dodgers 7. Lakers-Celtics 8. Canadiens-Maple Leafs 9. Army-Navy 10 Bears-Packers |

barcelona-espanol is not a rivalry. more than liverpool-everton is city-united in manchester or tottenham-arsenal in london England -turkey is hot!
Also Roma (river)-lazio (irri), while best derby are still Fla-Flu in Rio de Janeiro and of course Milan-Inter

please.....milan inter??? it's a normal game compared to roma-lazio. you ofte see players switching from inter to milan and vice versa.....and fans still make chorus for them.....it's not a rivalry. best soccer rivalries are, not in order of importance: boca-river lazio-roma real-barca ajax-den bosh (i hope to remember well....) fla-flu city-united arsenal-chelsea borussia-shalke04

Lakers- Celtics?
That's not a rivalry. It was interesting during the Bird-Magic years but that is really not a rivalry. The teams are 3000 miles apart, play in different conferences and leagues and really have nothing to do with each other.
I'm sure the Lakers and their fans could care less about the Celtics.
Lakers- Sacramento is more of a rivalry.

Irri you're right, Milan-Inter is not a rivalry as lazio-roma, becuase while the game in Milan it usually decide a title, in roma ij just for city supremacy, so it's more important for you.
Not chelsea (no tradition, south london) arsenal, but tottenham-arsenal (north london, really close each other).
In Nba I agree with madman, sac-la is the rivalry now, boston-philly in old times

Madman, the article was pointing out older rivalries as well as current ones. I think you're right that Lakers-Kings is a much better rivalry right now.
Used to be the Bulls/Knicks were some pretty bruising games, to, but neither team is what it used to be,
How about: Trail Blazers/Oregon State Police?

Army-Navy should be farther up that list. Even if its not the same level of play as it was years ago that game means so much to each of those guys. Its the one game of year they would give anything to win.
I would put that no lower than #4.
