Subject: Dude, I'm getting a Dell! (how about a commission)

The reason for the post is I want to make sure that the site will get the commission if I buy as long as I click through the link on this page
I take it I can make as many subsequent clicks as I want to get to the small business section and custom configure the 'puter how I likes it, and the site will still get the commission, as long as I buy it via that open window. I notice when I click on the link, it takes me to a page on the Dell site that does not have the "Outrageous Dell Deals" page that has the killer price and configuration I'm interested in.
If any of you are shopping for a mid to high end machine for really cheap, you should definitely check the sale out...it ends tonight! P4 2.8 Ghz, 512 MB, 40 Gb for like $449 with cd-rw, PCIe graphics port, etc. Can make several upgrades for not much more. |

I'm warning you ahead of time Dell has incredibly bad support. I just bought a Dell a month ago and am completely frustrated with their support.

how much support do you need? if there are enough problems with the computer that you need support to the point where you are dissatisfied, then support isn't the only issue.

Even the simplest things are incredibly difficult to get fixed.
I'm warning you. The calls go to Panama.

Well, with this sale, it comes with a 2 year on-site warranty for no extra charge. If they can't fix it with you over the phone, they send out a technician.
Plus, you can add in a sweet flat panel LCD screen if you want one for a good price. I think the same system sells for 649 with an 80 Gb Serial-ATA (150) Hard Drive and a 15" LCD. Upgrade to 17" LCD for another 50 bucks (only 699!) You can also upgrade to their high-line 17" LCD with DVI, 500:1, and 12 ms refresh for an extra 70 bucks. This all includes free shipping. Also has PCI express graphics, can add the 256 MB nvidia GeForce 6800 for $240. Has built in 5.1 sound, built in 10/100 ethernet, etc.

Set mine up on Christmas Eve. With the 80 gig hard drive and other bells and/or whistles, it's pretty sweet. Only $744 delivered and the 15" flat panel screen is just fine.
I just hope the Guru got a cut of it.

PD - I did earn a commission for one purchase in the 4th quarter that matches up with the price you mentioned.
I'll probably be getting a new desktop soon myself. My current machine is also a Dell, and will be 5 years old in April.

I have a Dell laptop, and under a 3 year complete care warranty (Up in Aug '05) I called last night as there were numerous thigns falling apart (The screen was detaching, the battery clasp was beaking, and keys had been falling off) I had also spilled a drink on it.
Well I called them up last night, waited 2 mins, and had a nice girl who said that they were having problems inputting requests for warranty repairs, but she would call me back, she did an hour later with a reference number and I drove down today at 10 AM to the company dell leases to do repairs. I just came home with my laptop completely fixed (new screen, keyboard etc.) all free of charge and done within 6 hours.
Generally I find with Dell that their customer service reps are in Panama/India, and are essentialy used to dealing with morons hence they just goto through a step by step manual that Dell gave them. If you tell them you know your stuff by using any tech lingo they generally are good.
If you really want to talk with someone in North America I find the best step is going through technical support during EST business hours. 90% of the time I've called tech support and I know they're in NA.
Over-all Dell has stepped over backwards for me, and will be ordering a new computer, along with a 42 inch plasma for my parents by the end of the month.

On a sidenote I've been doing a lot of research on dell deals etc, and the best time to buy a Dell by consensus seems to be in January. From what I've heard Dell has the best deals at the end of the month, and has the absolute best prices end of January as their fiscal year ends January 31st, which I confirmed with a financial buddy, hence trying to squeeze in as many sales before reporting.
For anyone looking to buy anything from Dell, I would suggest looking out for the next couple of weeks for any deals that may come along.

Funny, Guru. My generic internet custom build desktop turns 5 this Spring as well. It has served me well, but every 4 1/2 years seems long enough to wait..... Funny thing is this new Dell will have 4x the processor speed, running on 4x Front Side Bus speed, 4x the hard drive space on a faster drive (serial over ATA), 4x the memory (running at 3x the speed), 2x the USB ports which are now 2.0 standard, extra high speed connections like firewire and 10/100 Ethernet and will cost less than my previous system and will ship with 17" DVI LCD fast refresh/high res/high contrast, whereas my last machine cost more without any monitor.
I suppose by Jan 31 I can get it for $100 cheaper

I agree with qwert in post 2 ("how much support do you need?"). Support matters a ton for new users. My first computer was a Quantex. They had trmendous customer service via an 800# and I called them so often, took notes, and learned a ton.
But now??? I haven't called anyone or needed to in years. The web has everything you or I need, IMHO.

Twarpy - if you're looking into buying a Dell plasma, you may want to check out this thread in the AVS forum. A lot of well thought out reviews of Dell's new product including some growing pains this product seems to be going through. It'll probably be a while before I buy an HDTV, but I was doing some research and had been following that thread as it seems Dell was starting a price war of sorts. Unfortunately, it seems there's now a 1000+ posts...

I don't remember any Dell plasma reviews here plasma tv reviews but they have very informative reviews of other brands.
I have never had an issue with Dell or their support. All I know is they replaced my CD-R drive even though it was out of warranty. No complaints.

SY I have actually been following that thread on AVS for a while, from what I can see of the reviews the problems more seem to be more a set of defective units in which Dell seems to replace right away.
I won't get into the exact details as to why my dad/I settled on the Dell but the bottom line is its partly to do with his line of work, and this is not an 8 year investment, as more of a 4 year investment for the time being, and with no other viable HD choices in the price range he will most likely get the Dell. Thanks a lot for pointing out AVS though for any gurupies that don't know that site goes into detail on about any type of electronics you can imagine, sometimes a little too much into detail, but is great for unbaised user reports.

Which Dell? If you mean the W4200HD, I prefer the Panasonic TH42PD25U/P, which I picked up today, ironically, for $2499 + tax locally at COSTCO of all places. I was all set to get it off the web but it's mostly out of stock (14 day delay).

Mike D,
The TH42PD25U/P is EDTV, and sounds like a great choice, but again in the line of work my dad is doing, he will be fairly close to the TV, and will need the extra resolution. If this TV's main purpose was for watching at a comfortable distance I would definately go for an EDTV, and from all the reviews of not only Unemployed's site, and others I would go with a Panny.

FWIW, I think the Dell I mentioned is a good unit. Great to see more competition and better prices.

Sorry if I didnt make myself clear, yeah Mike D thats the one I'm looking at, done quite a bit of research and it's very hard to match it in terms of price, for an HD that is.
Also in that AVS thread, I remember reading a while ago that the components are actually made by the same company that builds the parts for Phillips, and the glass is the same used in Samsung tv's.
