That's funny. Apparently he's still at TSN as well (his contact details are c/o TSN). Busy guy.

Guys:

Okay, so I write on the side. But we've been (mostly) busy getting baseball ready, and I hope that you like the improvements we've made, especially to our commish game.

As always, I'm reachable by email.

Wow...that's good work. Congrats, Erik. I'm sure most people have thought about writing and may even have good stories, but thinking and doing are very different. Kudos to you on your publication and good reviews.

Thx -- and I'm happy to answer questions if anyone wants to get into the book biz (I have a second book coming out next year). I just don't want to give the impression that this has been distracting in any way. With all the things we're doing for baseball, work has kept me pretty busy!

Erick: I read the 'excerpts' section and as one who has written (not published) a few poems and short stories, I'm very impressed with your style of writing and your character development. But I'm equally impressed with the effort.

Given that the talent is there, it's an entirely different thing to maintain the discipline to expend the effort to do an entire novel. Since that is where I fall way short (not that my writing is particularly worth a crap either) I admire your ability to grind it out on a consistent basis. Where do you find the time or the self-discipline? Please don't tell me that you are married with kids and did this!

So where does the motivation come from? A writer (I don't remember who) once wrote that he found the process was kind of like working out a puzzle, and that he didn't do it to get the glory or the profit, but mainly so he could get to sleep - that he just had the need to 'get it out and get it done'. Is that the way it is for you?

Anyway, I'll buy the book. It looks like a good read for my spring break vacation. Congrats!

Thinkinbig:

First, thanks for the kind words.

Now onto the meat of your post: I actually don't find writing all that cathartic. I do it because I'm interested in a particular topic (say, how you can change your identity in public), and I go as deep as I can without losing my mind. But it never feels like I've solved anything. Maybe this will change.

As for how I did it -- I'm big on schedules. I think that writing for an hour a day is far more productive, say, than writing for 4-5 hours on the weekend. So, basically, for a year, I closed my door at 6:30, wrote for 90 minutes, and then went home. I treated writing as an extension of my work day.

The second book I'm writing (TAKING A KNEE -- it's about fantasy football, and is under contract with S+S) is following a slightly different schedule. The topic is lighter, and I'm co-writing the book with a friend. So the process is more like firing emails back and forth over the course of a week.

At any rate, if you're at all interested in discussing this stuff further, feel free to email me (erikbarmack@yahoo.com), and thanks so much for taking a read.
