I'm sorry to have to report that we've lost one of the rotoguru community in the past few days. The poster we've known as "Rand" lost a battle with cancer and has passed away.
I only knew him from several e-mail exchanges and shared leagues over the years, but he truly seemed like a great guy and will definitely be missed. I put this post in the hoops forum because that's where I believe he was most active, though I know he was in leagues across many different sports.
Rand leaves behind a wife and three daughters, 12, 10 and 4.
Rest in peace, Steve. |

Wow...
I think he is in the Gurukeepers league. I didn't know him all that much, but it is shocking.

I didn't know him well, but we had corresponded on a few occasions, albeit not for several years.
I see from my files that he first became a GuruPatron on Christmas day, 2002.
He was a member of the first RIHC, finishing 4th. That qualified him to return for the second year, when he didn't fare as well. I'm not sure, but I suspect that 2nd season may have coincided with the timing of his first diagnosis.
My understanding is that, although he has been battling the disease for several years, he found his participation in fantasy sports to be a good "escape", and strove to stay active as long as he could.
Over the years, we've lost several good friends from this community. I won't even try to name them, for fear of forgetting someone. But they've all enhanced the community, and all left their mark. And I know that they all drew strength and enjoyment from the camaraderie of this community - which always humbles me.
Obviously, our prayers, condolences, and good thoughts go out to his family.

Very sad; even more so with children so young.

yea, this is one of those "well, I only kinda knew him through a message board and played fantasy sports with him" sort of things, yet you feel as though you lost someone you knew, almost a member of the family. it's still a punch to the gut, even if you "only" knew the person online...
thoughts and prayers to his family.

My condolences. This community has been very fortunate that this doesn't happen often. It's important for us to take a moment to mourn, but also to be thankful for what we have.

Very sad indeed. I only really knew Rand through his time in RIHC, but he always seemed like a stand-up guy and great competitor. Like everyone else, my thoughts go out to his family.

Sad news indeed. My heart and thoughts go out to Steve's family for their loss and extends to all that mourn his passing.
Although I only know all of you on these boards as part of this community of people with a common interests that it has now evolved to, it is still very disheartening to know we lost one among our ranks, and I feel for those that he left behind.

I also only knew him from the leagues we shared in common. My condolences and sympathies go out to his wife and kids. They are in my prayers. Our community loses another.

My condolences and sympathies go out to his wife and children.
He must have been relatively young to have children that age...very sad.

ChicagoTRS, thats what I was thinking. With mine at 2, 7 and 9, I imagine he was about the same age.
Definitely a tough situation to have dealt with. My condolances to his family.

Thanks very much BJis21 for letting us know. I have been off the boards for a while and just saw this thread. My children are 6, 8, and 9 so I am sure this was a very hard loss for them as well as his wife. I hope his wife and children are aware that he made some connections here and will be missed. I lost my father this summer and through the grief it was cool to meet people whose lives he touched even though I had not met them before myself. It felt like a way of connecting with him and knowing him more fully.
