0 Subject: RIHC 2007-08: let's get started

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Wed, Sep 26, 2007, 22:36

It’s time to begin organizing the RIHC leagues.

The RIHC managers have all been invited and have accepted. My guidelines for succession were to give initial priority to the top 4 RIHC teams, the teams finishing 1-2 in each AAA league, the winner of each AA league (2), and me. In addition to those 10 teams, the teams finishing 5-6 in the RIHC and the teams finishing 3rd in each AAA league were on the bubble. Because two invitees declined (skinneej and Flying Polack), all four bubble teams received invitations.

So, here is the list of the 12 RIHC managers for 2007-08:
Guru
Mike D
coldwater coyotes
Footwedge
Mike V
Mark L
Species
Dave R
tommyd
JL
sR
Jason

The first 5 names listed are returning from last year’s RIHC. The next five are moving up from the AAA leagues, and the last two names are the winners of each AA league.

I will open up a thread for qualifying leagues in a moment. After that, we can begin discussing potential rules changes in this thread.

Here are the basics:

Roster Positions (12/3/2): PG, SG, G, G, PF, SF, F, F, C, C, Util, Util, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL
Stat Categories (8): FG%, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, REB, AST, ST, BLK
Max games per position: 84
Roster moves: Daily

I figured it would be good to recap the rules regarding the injury slots:
Three bench slots are available to hold any player. Two additional bench slots will be enabled, but are restricted as “injury slots”, hereafter abbreviated as “IS”.

An NBA player shall be eligible to fill an IS if he is listed in any “informed” source as being injured more seriously than “day-to-day”. Examples of acceptable information sources include (but are not limited to):
RotoWire
RotoWorld
RotoTimes
ESPN
NBA.com
Newspaper stories (citing facts, not speculation).

Once a player appears in an NBA game, he is no longer eligible to fill an IS, even if a published source fails to remove his listing. When a player is no longer IS eligible, the team shall have a limited amount of time to remove that player from the IS, as defined below.

If a manager wishes to move a player into an IS but cannot find a confirming source, he may request that the Commissioner approve the designation. The Commissioner shall use his best judgment in making such a determination.

If any manager believes that another team has improperly moved a player into an IS, he may file a protest with the Commissioner. If any manager disagrees with a Commissioner ruling, he may request a league vote. Six votes shall be required to overturn any Commissioner ruling related to an IS.

Each Wednesday, the Commissioner shall review all rosters to assure that any filled injury slots are appropriate. In the event that an IS is improperly filled, the Commissioner will notify the manager of the violation via the email link at the Yahoo site. The notified manager will have 48 hours to correct the roster or to provide a satisfactory explanation. If a breach remains uncorrected 48 hours after notice, the Commissioner shall have the authority to drop a bench player in order to bring the roster into conformance. The player dropped will be based upon the Commissioner’s judgment as to the best interests of the impacted team.

The Commissioner shall have the latitude to extend the time for curing a breach if he knows that the manager is unreachable and/or unavailable to make the adjustment.

No player which is in an IS slot may be placed in a starting slot on any day unless the bench has been cleared of that injury slot, or unless another player is eligible to replace that player in the vacated IS. In the event of a violation, the Commissioner may elect to void any stats generated by improperly activated player.

As before, no player may be picked up as a free agent and immediately placed in an IS. Free agent additions are only IS eligible 10 days after pickup, unless the player has appeared in an NBA game after the pickup and the IS eligibility occurred thereafter.

I'm not aware of any need for rules changes. The basic rules have been the same since inception, and the injury rules have generally worked well for the past two years.

But, I'm always open to suggestions.

Yes, I've argued hard for it in the past Species. Alas, it never makes it too far even with the crazies like you and me in full support.

Mike D, I think they might add TMs when they add UEs in baseball and RTs in hoops. Uhmm yeah, Umpire Ejections and Referee Technicals. Can you imagine having to have a spot for an umpire or ref?

No, but I've heard of some strange rules in leagues before----technical fouls being one of them. No Sheed in that league!

- When are we planning on getting started?

- Am I correct in assuming we are using position eligibility as determined solely by Yahoo?

- If so, if position eligibility can be posted that would be great.

- Lastly, and I'm sure Mike D has proposed this before (heh), but can draft position priority be traded? i.e. - if I have the 2nd choice of draft position, can I include that value in a trade?

Yes, Yahoo eligibilities are used.

Let's get started on the draft position selection round.

I need two different managers to email me a set of integers from 1-12, randomly ordered.

I will start with the following alphabetical list of managers' Gurupie names:

coldwater coyotes
Dave R
Footwedge
Guru
Jason
JL
Mark L
Mike D
Mike V
Species
sR
tommyd

The first set of numbers received will be used to resequence this list. The second set will assign selection order to that list.

[8] - Draft position priority can be traded. (That same could effectively be accomplished by trading all draft picks, so why not)

Species sent 11 9 4 2 12 7 1 10 6 3 5 8

Mike D sent 10 2 5 3 4 9 8 11 1 7 12 6

Here is the resulting order for the draft position selection round:

1 Dave R
2 Guru
3 Footwedge
4 sR
5 Species
6 Jason
7 Mike D
8 JL
9 Mike V
10 Mark L
11 tommyd
12 coldwater coyotes

We can begin whenever Dave R is ready.

I just checked the brief (4 year) history of teams that had the first pick in the RIHC:

2003-04: Coldwater Coyotes picked Tim Duncan. He finished 9th that season. He still got invited back, based on a great stretch drive and some attrition by managers who finished higher.

Dave R was the league winner, who got stuck with Kevin Garnett with the 3rd pick.

2004-05: Coldwater Coyotes picked Garnett this time. He finished 7th that year, and dropped to AAA.

Swish and Edgar won that year. They picked Lebron with the 9th pick in the first round.

2005-06: Dave R took LeBron with the first pick this year. He finished in 10th place, and dropped to AAA.

Mike D won the league that year. He took Duncan with the 7th pick.

2006-07: RSF took LeBron with the first pick. He finished 11th.

I won, after taking Wade with the 8th pick in round 1.

No wonder nobody wants it!

So when will we start the draft?
37Guru

      Sat, Oct 13, 2007, 15:01
In general, I like to wait as late as possible, without risking finishing too late.

The NBA season starts Tuesday, Oct. 30, so I'd like to target a finish date around Friday, Oct. 26. That allows for a few days of leeway if we get unexpectedly bogged down.

In recent Invitational league drafts for baseball and football, we've been averaging around 24 picks per day. This league requires only 180 total picks (15 rounds, 12 players per round.) If we maintain that average pace, we should only require 7-8 days. On that basis, we could wait until this coming Thursday to start.

But just to provide an extra margin, I think we should start on Wednesday. So I'll plan to start the clock on Wednesday morning.

If there is interest, I can activate the draft on Tuesday, without a clock. But I do think that we can wait until Wednesday.

I like to use a 6 hour clock, with a moratorium from 1am to 7am ET. I know that the pause times extend late for easterners and end early for westerners, but with a 6 hour pause, this still provides a 12 hour window for any pick which extends through the pause period, which should be ample.

Sound like a plan?

Wednesday it's OK for me too.

One important thing: I live in Hungay, but I will try to organize my days not slow the draft. It would be problematic for me to draft from 6pm to 1am ET, because I am sleeping at this period.:)So, it would be comfortable for me and quicker for everybody, if the previous manager pick up his player until 6pm.

And I would like to know what is the method to mark somebody to pick up my players (in behalf of me, off course:) when I am not near internet. Could you help me?

Thank's Jason

The draft software allows you to authorize anyone in the draft to be a DP (designated picker). By default, I am automatically a DP for everyone.

If you set up a queue, your DP (and I) can only see it if you mark it as "available". You can specify whether you want the entire queue to be available, or just the top name. You can also specify whether your DPs may select for you using "free form" - in other words, typing in a name that is not preset in your queue. You might want to use this feature if your are going to be calling in to someone to make your pick.

I will activate the draft this evening so that people can begin to set up queues and/or DPs, if needed for tomorrow. Once the draft is activated, picks can be made, although there is no need (or expectation) to start drafting until tomorrow morning.

Jason - I would strongly recommend, especially being near the end of a round, that if you set up a queue and only want ONE pick to be taken from that queue, that you specify that either via an email to your designated picker or posting it in the draft thread. For example:

"I have set a queue for Round 4 only. Please let me adjust my queue for Round 5 before picking"

.....some people have put a queue of players from one position (i.e. PG) for one round, but a designated picker ended up taking the top 2 available players in your queue since they didn't have instructions to the contrary.

Good luck from Eastern Europe!
