0 Subject: Opening day roster discussion

Posted by: Pica
- Sustainer [161141312] Mon, Oct 22, 2007, 10:14

With the season only little more than a week away, I feel it's time to kick off some draft discussions. I know how we want to keep something to ourselves but with board participation dwindling every year I think we need all the discussion we could gather. Anyways, I just started scanning through the prices of players and it looks really steep this year. All prices look steep at the beginning of the year but it appears even more so this season. I see a lot of players priced at TSNP/G/$mn at around 3.7-3.9 where IIRC it was around lower 4.x in previous seasons. I have trouble fielding a complete roster as it is let alone schedule considerations.

I think guys like Brewer, Haywood, Hermann, Dorell Wright, Bonzi, Blatche are going to be popular draftees.

It is not easy this year, but that doesnt make it less interesting. Blatche is the one who interests me the most from your list.

Pica, when you take a look at the schedules of the players on your list, I think that only Brewer has a schedule worthy of an opening roster draftee.

My guess is that most of the players on opening day rosters should come from teams who play 8 games in the first 15 days of the season like Cleveland, Denver, Houston, New Jersey, New Orleans, Orlando, Phoenix, Seattle and Utah.

I think the schedule for cheapies matters much less than for higher priced players. I'd certainly be willing to draft a cheapie with a poor schedule if I thought they were going to perform significantly above their price.

My other question is whether to just draft a team or pursue a day late strategy. Most years I seem to draft several cheapiers who stink and burn 2-3 early trades to remedy this problem. My plan this year was to adopt a day late for all my teams, but with the bonus trade for having a complete roster Oct 30, I'm currently planning on trying to get my rosters done by then.

kyle lowry with a triple double for memphis tonight.

if it weren't for the logjam at pg, i think he could be a great option.

maybe he will be anyway.

With Mike Bibby out, Quincy Douby looks like potential options at a minimum price of $500K.

I currently have 4 players under 3 million on my team. Anyone else leaning the barbell way?

Last season it was the balanced team that won from the beginning. Jack, Zach, Boozer, Deron, Q, etc.

Seems like the players with good scheds that you need to go balanced this year are question marks. Last season, the Boozer's and Zach's had proven themselves in the past.

Bandwagon, I have 4 players under $3M as well, plus 2 studs and 4 mid-priced players. I guess that's a modified barbell.

I have not been here for a while...I decided to start a TSN team
again for the first time in 3-4 years...I was fairly competitive
once, by utilizing this great site.

my first draft...so far:

G-Chris Paul
G- Jameer Nelson
G-Daniel Gibson
G- Quincy Douby

F- LeBron James
F- Shawne Williams
F- Hilton Armstrong
F- Ronnie Brewer

C- Dwight Howard
C- Mehmet Okur

Barbelling...this would fit the term, gives me some flexibility
between the positions as well. Most are several week holds, a
few the entire first month...ride the cheapies for a long time.

Nice Rubalamp!!!! 7 of your guys are in the 15 or so that I like...
Okur is just not my flavor this year
Daniel Gibson -- not sure of his health??
only other guy I question is
Shawne Williams -- not sure I see him getting
the playing time once the season starts?

nice lineup though!

I think williams will get the time, but I just realized his suspension
goes through the 9th of November...I am from Indiana, and he
seems to be one of the bright spots for us. I think he will back up
granger, while Dunleavy will be backed up by Daniels at the 2.

I like Okur, I will have to look more at Gibson.

I know the cavs have a good sched off the bat, but I cant see having 3 of them... Its a team that doesnt put up big numbers so I would get rid of a few of those guys. Of course nobody can question having lebron, but...

I can't see having three of them either?...So, I don't...I have changed
the team again, and still don't have 3. May change it further.

Williams really may get the most points of anyone currently at 500K
for the entire season.

I think he will be someone worth waiting for...

I will consider still buying him early. He is a guy who will get
minutes...Currently I have Diogu on my roster, as Williams and
Murphy are both out, Diogu will be supporting Foster and O'Neal.
He may come out of the gate ripping it up, but will cool down once
Williams starts I think. May trade into williams then, if I don't
already have him...

This thread was much more active when I was on here years ago.
What happened?

He is not on my roster now...but he will be worth the money. Until
everyone gets healthy.

yes...everyone is onto armstrong.

i'm sorry, picking up shawne williams heading into a 3 game suspension is crazy. you can easily get 80 TSNP for one trade, which is more than you will ever get once the season gets underway.

And in truth, it probably won't cost you a trade...because if your team is anything like mine, you will have guessed wrong with one of your players, who you can then flip into williams, once his suspension is over.

I also think Bonzi Wells is a questionable pickup, but at least he has 5 games in the first week.

the problem is, it would cost at least 2 trades, because there is no
one else at F that is close to what his production will be for his
price...I may go for Diogu...he seriously should put up monster
numbers in the first week.

Any chance Strawberry gets minutes for PHX?

I would not rely on DJ. Either way, I don't think starting with Williams makes any sense.

I don't see why it "makes NO sense"...He is an affordable player
that misses only three games...at 500K...Is that reall worth 80
points??

Maybe 60 at most on average (getting 20 per at 500K seems
about the most to hope for in most cases).

The day late strategy costs you more in lost points (potentially a
couple hundred), and MANY of those teams proved to be
effective over the years.

Keeping the spot at 500K with 3 games of inactivity is not that
big of a deal, for being over a month long hold. You can't even
lose roster value on it...

Rotoworld says Greene's going to start as PG for the Kings, is he worth a flyer? I think they are going to do a PG by commitee thing and no one player (salmons, greene, douby) will standout as a result.

the bottomline, I really like Okur...as much as I try out different
things, I end up with Williams back on my roster. There are no
cheap center options that are worth anything.

I think starting your team is a pretty private enterprise and once the season starts, there will be more discussion.

So do you have Williams on your roster?

to those going day late...

im definitely going to add brewer to my teams because I can't think of any reason I wouldn't want to own him and hes sure to make money.

wat about pryzbilla? he has too of days now will he still see good gains tonight? will these gains outweigh seeing another days games before deciding? I think he can continue good production for his price so I'm leaning towards adding him but his schedule is really conducing to training for another week and a half?

any others worth adding for tonights changes?

Brewer for sure. Kiri also IMO.

Foyle is another cheap option at C and maybe wait and see how he does tonight, or even what other cheap C emerges. I don't think it would hurt to wait a day on Pryzbilla.

I'll probably add Howard also tonight.

good point on kirilenko....after lasts night game it seems that he is someone to work into your lineup...6 million can limit my options a little bit more than the cheapies but yea he seems primed for a bounce back season. And yea I had already told myself I was going to have Howard as one of my studs to begin on my day late team so might as well have him for the gains he sees tonight. Worry a bit tho that since he should have real high ownership what may happen if he has an off night but i guess that is worth it. Also I'm pretty sure I am going to start with Nash too because pheonix has an awesome schedule for a line-up starting thursday. Any chance he sees any gains? Prob small so not worth totally limiting myself so early buying 3 players totaling 26 mill. still cant see myself not wanting him...

yea webster looked good and hes definitely someone to consider. I don't know about adding him tonight tho. He has 2 days off now and was outshone by a couple cheaper players. 27 is good for his price but not ridiculous. Real pleased with the minutes tho as i have him on my normal team. Think I'll wait to see how others do tonight first as i don't think I will lose too much on him. Also with his schedule skipping out on him as initially should be fine as he is a great candidate for a second week train when another train I'm on crashes
