0 Subject: OT - Who said golf isn't a contact sport?

This morning as I was walking to the first tee to play golf, one of the guys in my group wasnt' looking and took a huge practice swing and caught me dead in the mouth on the backswing, chipping my front tooth. I was spitting out teeth parts before I hit my first shot. Fortunately, my best friend, who is a dentist was in our group and said he'd take care of me, especially if I played well. I promptly birdied the first three holes.
Fast forward to the 16th hole. It parallels our driving range. As I was standing in the right rough eyeing my second shot to the green, a ball from the driving range nailed me in the top of the head, knocking me to the ground. Now blood is coming from the top of my head and my partners are grabbing towels. They ran me up to the clubhouse and a doctor looked at me. My doctor, a good friend, lives down the street and I went to see him. I am now about to go to the hospital for X-rays because he thinks there is a possibility I have a compression fracture in my skull. They don't do anything for it, he just wants to make sure there is nothing else. I am very lucky the ball didn't hit me in the temple.
Worst part, I was 4 under par and playing very well.
Somehow, I don't care as much about Dorrell Wright anymore.
What a day!

OUCH! Sorry to hear that buddy, especially with a 4 under round!! Funny thing is I talked to jedman on the 8th hole - maybe I was bad luck!

Hope all of the X-rays and whatnot are clear. Get well soon!

PS - I have been hit in the toe once by an errant shot.

Wow, what a day you are not kidding! That is one awful way to end a sweet scoring round. Hopefully the pro refunded your greens fees if you're not a member, but it sounds like you are. They may need to re-evaluate their layout of hole #16! At a minimum, you may want to re-evaluate your future tee-shot placement...LOL

Sounds like you're pretty well taken care of though, so you have to be thankful about that.

I have to chuckle that even with all your trauma you were well enough and took the time to hop online and give us a report :-)

Let us know that you didn't slip into a coma due to cortical swelling.

I don't think I've personally been hit before, though I've had some close calls- including my cart being hit while I was in it. It always makes you mad when no one has the courtesy to warn you. I once hit a player in my group - the 75 year old member who got me into the club- when he had walked too far ahead to the corner of the bend. Unfortunately for him, on that shot, my intended draw turned to duck hook. I yelled fore but he was too slow to move in time, and I'll never forget the sound of my ball popping off his shin from 75 yards. I had to turn around- I couldn't stop from laughing it was so loud. It sounded a lot like when you pop your tongue off the roof of your mouth only about 20 times louder.

One other time one of my opponents nailed a beer cart girl square in the chest from about 200 yards. He yelled but she didn't hear him.

You must live in the South West, Jedman.

I live in Northern California. We have had some beautiful weather. It was in the low 40's when we teed off this morning, but no frost.

I had a CT Scan and it came out negative. I was in the emergency room for 4 hours. It will end up being an expensive round of golf. I am a member at the club and we do need to get some more netting on the side of the range.

Interesting side not. I was wearing a white golf shirt and white long sleeve T-shirt underneath. They were both covered with a lot of blood. My wife asked if I was going to change my shirt before going to emergency. I said no, I thought I might be seen sooner with the bloody clothes. So I walked in with an ice pack on my head and bloody shirts. Sure enough, I went to the front of the line. Next best thing to being brought in an ambulance as far as getting seen.

Also, my scalp is still oozing blood, so they put on some ointment and a gauze bandage. In order to keep the bandage in place, they wrapped gauze around my head and under my chin. I like like some sort of mummy and I can't take the bandage off for 24 hours. Needles to say, I'm staying home tomorrow.

I can laugh about it now, but if it had hit me in the eye or on my temple, I may not be laughing about it so much. I do feel very fortunate to be typing this and feeling as well as I do, just some dull pain and a slight headache. How hard do you think a golf ball has to be travelling to hit you and knock you flat to the ground? My playing partners saw it happen and couldn't believe how fast I fell to the ground.

And Wright still sucks and is gone tomorrow.

Sounds like a question for that new show on TNT or wherever - The Science of Sports - or whatever. Maybe you can star on that episode, and you can re-enact your fall. I have to get my kids into that show. It sounds/looks like a great one.

Good call on the bloody shirts, btw.

I hope your wife will take some good pictures of you in your mummy get-up. Maybe you can even post one on here. At any rate, they should be useful in a mailing to the board of directors along with a letter requesting the additional safety measures.

You're right, you were lucky. I wonder how many people die each year from collisions with golf balls.

In my defese, my wife had a miagraine and my mom needed to eat lunch before we left, so I had a few minutes. It just show my affection for the Gurupie community that I would want to share it before I died:)

Wait a minute: You had a bleeding head wound, and you had to wait to go to the hospital because your wife had a migraine?

If the roles were reversed, would you have even gotten out "Hold on, honey, I've got a mi..." before hearing the slamming car door just as your mother hits the gas taking your wife to the hospital?

LMAO! Can you think of anything more fitting?

Hey, I did send my kids a text message with picture from the emergency room and I did write this all down in my journal.

I have too much time on my hands today. I'm supposed to take it easy and just lay around the house. I'm going for the record for most percentage of posts in an action thread.

And just to be fair, how about posting one of the pics with my cute Grandkids also, and not just a self-taken cell phone picture.

Sheesh Jedman! Sorry to hear about this - at least you're able to laugh it off, sort of.

Hang in there and best of luck on your next outing!

jedman my friend - glad to hear you are none worse for wear. I love the emergency room story, VERY good call going in with the bloodied clothing! Exactly what I would have done. The picture with the gauze on your head also reminds me of someone with the Mumps.

I expect you back on the golf course by Saturday!

PS - the grandkids look great!

WTF, jedman?? Maybe a golf helmet next time? Or perhaps I should mail that SW hat back to you for a little protection! ;)

Hope you're feeling better!
