0 Subject: Special Dumbie Trade Advice

As you can read in detail below, I am a BB fantasy newbie as I have discussed before. 9-category league, all the info on my roster and standings you could want below. The question:

Were these good/serious options or is this guy jamaica taking me (correctly) for a fool?:

Jamaica: Nowitzki, T. Chandler, T Martin FOR
Me: Paul, Iverson, O' Neal

(Turned down:)

NOTE: jamaica soon after traded Nowitzki and Jason Terry for Boozer and Bynum.

jamaica: Camby, Kevin Martin
ME: Paul, Iverson.

(Turned down.)

BACK STORY:

As some of you might remember, I undertook the experiment of playing in one roto and two W-t-W leagues at the beginning of this year, using the Rotoguru Hoops Invitational draft as my cheat sheet.

I'm hanging in there in all 3 leagues -- 6th, 4th, 6th. I'm sinking slowly in the roto league because I don't have the automatic understanding of who to pick up when someone gets injured, or takes over a starting position, etc.

My rankings (http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/nba/4379 if you can see it) FG% 5 -- FT% 10.5 -- 3TM 1 -- PTS 9 -- Reb 5 -- Ast 10 -- St 10 -- Blk 11 -- TO 1. In 7th place, 17.5 points behind the leader.

Roster as of tomorrow (main starters)(and I'm going to list the marginal players in brackets ): G; Iverson, Paul (Quinn, Finley, Marvin Williams); F: J. O'Neal, R, Wallace, Kirilenko (and just picked up Joe Smith); C Yao Ming (sean Williams, Curry, Mikki Moore).

Both those trades would have been a bad deal for you.
I would take a look at your bames played.
The fact that you are last in turnovers suggests that you may have played a few to many games.
The cheat sheet you used doesnt take into account TO's so it stands to reason you are in last.
If you are ahead of pace on games played I would bench the players you have in brackets with the exception of players named Williams and Smith.
If you are way ahead of pace try doing a two for one player where the player you get is better than both of the players you give up individually but not as good to gether.
In other words try to trade two sixes for a seven or eight.

I agree, he was trying to fleece you. I didn't run numbers and don't have much of a clue on TO's but I like your players better in both deals. Paul and Iverson are studs this year, esp. Paul and he knows it which is why he's coming after you with his weak stuff. Nowitski is having an off year for an MVP caliber player and he got a steal of a deal on his trade he made with that other player.

Still, you've got to do your own math and add up the per game averages of the players in question and see what you're gaining and losing in each cat, and then also think about each player...their injury histories, their role on their teams....are they slumping or coming back from injury or about to have minutes reduced, having just a hot streak that has inflated their recent stats, etc.

Also, you want to try to gain points in cats where they are more easily attainable. If you're in a dogfight with six other managers for postion in one cat but in another you're way ahead or way behind or only close to one other player, it makes sense to pick up stats in the closely contested cat and trade off stats from the cat that won't hurt you as much in the point totals. For example, if you drafted Shaq and Howard and Duncan and are last by a mile in FT%, go ahead and trade away Ray Allen if you have him because even he can't save your FT% category, and use his studliness in that category to pick up in another category which will help you more - relative to your opponents.

Kind of a chess match at times, but lots more luck and personality of course.

Who is the classless loser who gave this thread a 1? The Basketball Forum is a cloistered group of fantasy geeks in the worst way. Have any of you noticed that there isn't a single thread about NBA teams and who people think will win this year? Yeah, I'm sure playing TSN is great and all, but do any of you actually watch the games and care, or is the extent of your involvement with the NBA is: Who has the best schedule? Who should I trade into?

Lame!

I'm going with Jamaica with the 1. It was so thoughtful of someone else to clarify the rating with a 2, as well.

SZ, I kind of agree about there being a little too much focus on the TSN games in the BB forum, but it seems like this site has kind of specialized on those for some time and you know, that's one thing that gives this site it's niche in the world wide web marketplace. .

However, perhaps someone would care to begin a token discussion thread about the real nba teams and the W/L stats instead of the others.

I don't worry about the low rankings. Uninformed players looking for advice can be annoying to some people, although I try to keep it to once a month or so.

jamaica is at it again, this time Rajon Rondo and Carlos Boozer for Allen Iverson and Marvin Williams. That doesn't look bad in Yahoo! rank terms, but would hurt me in more categories than it helps. This one seems to make more sense if Rondo's back is all right, as I'm in a bunch of players in rebounds and could move up a lot with a relatively small increase. However I think I'll have to decline. The guy is persistent though.

Boozer is really cooling off, I'd stick with AI and Marvin.

If you need rebounds - try and trade for someone like Dalembert or even Nick Collison to a lesser degree (although I think Wilcox is back to cut into his PT).

I could see you wanting to target Camby as well... offer a package of Marvin + Kirilenko + Curry? to the guy with Camby (plus his two worst players).

Toral:
Dont feel like you need to make a trade.
Not making a trade is far better than making a bad trade.

SZ:
The regualar season is almost meaningless in the NBA.
You have 82 games over 5 and a half months and more than half the teams make the playoffs.
Right now the only meaning the regular season has IS fantasy sports.

Side note on Eddy Curry (needing rebounds and having Eddy Curry reminds me of this).

Is there a lazier big man in the league? How does he go through games where he gets like 3 rebounds?! I'm pretty sure my grandmother could come up with 4 rpg if she played 35 minutes a night and on a team that shoots as bad as the Knicks. Certainly are plenty of missed shots to go and get.

On the other hand, the fact that he doesn't ever block a shot or play defense hurts the rebounding - cause the other team never misses!

Vent over. Any Knicks fans out there that want to chime in?
Between Clyde Frazier's announcing and watching Curry and Marbury til this point, those weeknight games I often look forward too all winter are just unwatchable.
