The Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly traded big man Pau Gasol to the Lakers for F/C Kwame Brown, G Javaris Crittenton and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010. |

I hate to say its a great trade for the Lakers when they are acquiring a guy currently out with a back injury and they gave up 2 #1s, but..... they got someone to take Kwame Brown, which is no easy feat.
On the surface I like the move for the Lakers. He should really help that front line, especially with Bynum out.

Wow...was Jerry West drunk when he made this deal? I would have thought that the Grizz could have gotten much more for a high quality big man. The two first rounders will most definitely be in the 20's I would think, AND they have to take on Kwame's contract.
Javaris ain't worth that much.
Memphis got hosed!
Also rumors are Memphis is dealing Stro Swift to NJ for Jason Collins

Wait...didn't realize it, but Kwame is in the last year of his deal. Still doesn't make sense for the Grizz

haha...Great analysis of the Jason Collins part of the trade by Rotoworld:
As for Collins, he would possibly have some value if he played in a rec league at the Y, but that's not the case.

So Memphis trades Pau's 49 million dollars contract (through 2011) for Kwame and change? I don't think the Lakers have cap flexibility for this to work, this is just a rumor.

It's totally within the parameters of the CBA. They just have to match salaries (within 125%) for this year.

and Yahoo The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Memphis center Pau Gasol, a league source said Friday afternoon. The Lakers will send Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton to Memphis in the trade, along with draft considerations.

Thats why its Kwame in the deal... I bet Memphis would have rather had another young guy with some toughness and upside like Turiaf (to go with Crittenton).

I am surprised that Memphis didn't insist on including another guy in the deal that would help them out.
This trade sucks for all three Memphis Grizzlies fans.

I realize cap considerations are a big part of this deal, but that's a whole lot worse than what they were reportedly demanding from the Bulls last year (Deng and Gordon).

Bulls fans everywhere have to be wondering how in the heck do they not have Gasol instead. The Bulls have way more talent to offer than pathetic Kwame Brown. This is not gonna look good for John Paxson.

As you may have forgotten, West is no longer the GM of the Grizzlies. Maybe they'll beg him to come back after this awful trade. LOL

West is still a consultant with the Grizz, and I would think that they had to run this through him before pulling the trigger. He still holds lots of clout over there.

The Lakers got the second best deal in this trade. Aaron McKie was the clear winner, as he was signed to a $3 million deal (Larry Bird rights) to make the salaries match.
McKie hasn't played all year, and now he gets big cash to keep doing what he was doing. I wonder if he held out for a bigger deal or better perks..lol

I like the deal for the Grizzlies. They need to look 2-3 years down the road. Also they got the rights to Gasol's little brother.

Grizzlies will have TONS of money to spend in free agency next season in a year when most teams will have very little. This means they could add a couple of great players at a reduced price.
They'll also have 2 first round picks to supplement that as well as 3 more first round picks in the 2 seasons following.
Obviously Memphis needs to be looking to the future, and this does a pretty good job of that if you ask me.

I think it is a perfect case of a team over playing their hand. Memphis could have received a lot more had they made the trade this past off season.

I agree but I think upper management had some crazy notion that they might be competitive this year. Plus, it's tough to sell tickets when you trade your best player right before the season for a bunch of young guys and a scrub like Kwame.

That's true, but...If they had made the trade in the offseason, they could have gotten much more than the Laker scrubs and a couple of low picks. There were other teams offering much better deals.

Critterton was the #19 pick in this draft and has some potential so in essence they got 3 #1 draft picks.

Like Barilko, I'm starting to think the Grizzlies did ok here. While not top guys like the Deng deal, they have gotten A LOT of assets for the next 3 years.
Marc Gasol, the 48th overall pick in the 2007 draft, is playing for Akasvayu Girona in Spain. The Gasol brothers were members of the gold-medal-winning Spanish national team at the 2006 world championships. The younger Gasol is 23 and a 7-1, 280-pounder.
"This deal provides us with a significant amount of assets -- two first-round picks, the draft rights to Pau's brother Marc, who has emerged into the top big man in Spain, a talented young point guard in Crittenton and a sizable amount of salary cap room over the next few years," Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said in a statement.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that Gasol might have forced a trade. He's been unhappy with his situation.
West has proven to have a keen eye for talent. He might be targeting a draft pick next year. Also, keep your eyes on Milicic, he might finally be able to justify his draft position.
It looks like a win/win deal to me.

It's a good plan. That's all you can really hope for. The Sixers did the same thing in the Korver deal by freeing up cash via the expiring contract of Giricek, saving money on Korver's salary the next 2 years, and obtaining a #1 pick. And that was Korver. It's all in the plan, and if a team is moving in the right direction, that's a good sign.

All in all, I'd still rather go for a proven talent like Gasol than to rely on future draft picks and freeing up cash, etc.

The difference is whether you are winning----like the Lakers----or losing-----like Memphis. That's what dictates which side of the trade you are on.

#27, we've been keeping an eye on Milicic for 4 years now, he hasn't and will not justify his draft position.

Here is a little blurb about what 3 other teams were offering.
The Cleveland package was terrible, as was the Portland one.
The Bulls offer wasn't good, so maybe the Grizzlies did ok. I think I would prefer the picks and the cap space over Nocioni and Tyrus. If there was a way to get cap space, Noah, AND picks, then maybe.
Chicago Tribune - According to Chicago Tribune columnist Sam Smith, Cleveland and Portland both had offers in with the Memphis Grizzlies in an effort to land 7-footer Pau Gasol, who was traded Friday to the Lakers.
According to Smith, the Lakers initially were offering Kwame Brown and Vladimir Radmanovic; the Cavaliers supposedly were offering Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes; and the Trail Blazers were believed to be offering Raef LaFrentz and Travis Outlaw.
The Grizzlies were chasing expiring contracts, however, which posed the problem.
Smith also writes that Chicago, the team who has been linked with Gasol for over a year, were dangling Andres Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas while the Grizzlies wanted Joakim Noah and Thabo Sefolosha.
While there was no official offer on the table, Smith writes that Memphis insiders believe that Chicago would have accepted the deal because none of their core were included, and the Bulls would have taken back a contract like that of Brian Cardinal. [READ]

Memphis did OK given the offers out there. Look at what they are going to have going into the next 3 seasons to work with:
Memphis Grizzlies Salaries
Sure its a tough pill for Grizz fans to swallow, but the long-term future looks bright:
G - Conley Jr. / Lowry / Crittenton / Navarro (if they re-sign) G/F - Mike Miller / Rudy Gay F - Hakim Warrick F/C - Darko C - Gasol
With luck, they win the lottery, take the big man from Texas A&M D'Andre Jordan or Michael Beasley; than they'll likely be a serious contender in a couple years b/c they'll already feature a backcourt as good as anyones in the NBA.
Basically, I see them creating the Phoenix Suns 2.0:
G - Nash/Barbosa - Conley Jr./Lowry/Crittenton G/F - Grant Hill/Raja Bell - Mike Miller F - Shawn Marion - Rudy Gay C - Amare - Darko (Memphis hopes)
Add a splash with one of those rookies mentioned above (Jordan / Beasley) and they could be a pretty scary team.
