Knight put Tech on the basketball map (at least compared to what it used to be). When I went to Tech...the women's team outdrew the men's team by a lot, deservedly so.

What does this thread have to do with the NBA or who I should trade into? I'm giving it a -1!

I'm now rooting for the USF Dons so Eddie DWI Sutton will pass Bob for all time basketball wins.

I've always been a Bob Knight fan, Loved his book. But I had a feeling it was going to end soon when he was goo-gooing with his Grandson at that press conference.

I've long been a fan of Knight's as well. His disdain and lack of patience for the media has definitely impacted the way he is portrayed, and the way he will be remembered. He was a great teacher of the skills of the game, and one of the few who held his players accountable academically. A colorful personality to say the least, he will be missed.

Great article about Knight winning without cheating.

Thats a great article. I never knew that much about the guy.

A lot of truth to this...
If you're the guy who’s loyal to your wife, attentive to your kids and honest at your work but aren't much for keeping the lawn up, do you really want to hear about your neighbor who is quite the landscaper, but also the philanderer, drinker and gambler?

I'd imagine another one on the short "good list" is Coach K who happens to be a Knight disciple.

Wow, I'll have to dissent with the nearly unanimous opinion of him.

Knight treated a lot of people around him like crap on a regular basis. That's not indicative of a good man. It seems his players liked him (though I'm guessing this is due in part to the types of guys who would choose to play for him), and his family and friends speak extremely highly of him (though again, who would choose to be his friend if they didn't think highly of him?).

But anyone who thinks he's too good to treat _everyone_ around him with a minimum level of care and respect is a jerk in my book. Additionally he preached endlessly to his players about discipline yet showed repeatedly that he himself had none. Learn to control yourself. He also preached respect for authority yet again he showed that he had none.

A man who skips town before a trial, and never goes back to serve his sentence is called a "fugitive" not a "genius." A man who routinely goes on profanity-laced rants at almost everyone around him is an a**hole, not one of the "good" ones. The same is true of a guy who has been accused of assault so many times that you have to wonder if it's more than just "bad luck" on his part.

He was a great coach, and accomplished a lot of great things. He even taught his players a lot. But as a person he was a jerk, and one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever seen.

Oh, and I know a lot of people buy this whole "what's best for my team was for me to step down" thing, but in my opinion he got tired and he quit on them.

How do you think Knight would've responded to one of his players getting tired and quitting on him?

I don't think many people condoned of some of his public actions. I can say that I knew him and spending some time with him open sup a world of insight to his some of his actions. To talk to some (former) assistants to him and some of the players, it's amazing his motivations for some of those actions. Off the court he was so anonymously generous, you wouldn't believe it if you heard it.

I consider him the best coach of all time. Sure he could blow a gasket at times and could be embarassing to those around him, but in the end, he did play by the rules and still won more than anyone else probably ever will.

While he may have had some interesting motivations for the various outbursts, I don't think any of it makes them ok. I mean there may be some very good reasons to skip court or throw a chair, but there are some even better ones to not do those things.

In terms of on-the-court success his record won't last long, and it's partly due to the fact that he's had very mediocre results for about 20 years now. Even KenPom says he was basically too stubborn to succeed because he refused to adapt as the game changed.

I agree that those outbursts are not ok.

To get to 900 wins, it will take 45 years of winning 20 games/year or 36 years winning 25 games/year. 41 years avg 22 wins/year. Pretty tall order for anyone.

Btw, the reason Knight stepped down now: so his son could finally get a Div. 1 coaching job. He specifically had that caveat in his contract and put into his son's contract. I figured he'd quit after this 3 year deal he just had extended ran out.

Coach K is a risk to retire at any time but he's 4 more seasons away from taking over that record.

Do you know any details about the contracts for his son taking over? Is Tech pretty much locked into that or can they go another direction if they want? I heard a big motivation for the timing was that it'd increase the chances of his son getting to stick around next season.

Coach K is five years younger than Knight and in a better program. It really is just a matter of whether he wants it or not.

As far as the son, my understanding is that the son's taking over was part of Knight's contract.

Doesn't Duke have a mandatory retirement age, that will force Coach K to retire soon?

I'm a long time Knight fan, I still remember meeting him when I was 7 or 8 years old. He had been hunting with some friends near where I grew up and they were having breakfast at a local restaurant. My dad encouraged me to go up and say hello, I did and 10 minutes later my dad had to come over and take me away because Coach Knight was still talking to me. He had asked if I played basketball and was giving me tips on how to shoot free throws.

I disagree that his accomplishments will soon be forgotten. 3 National titles with a total of 1 NBA all-star? 900 career wins. The last undefeated college basketball team. I think we will be hearing about Knight for awhile.

I also agree that some people will only remember him for the emotional outbursts and not for the numerous acts of charity he performed. While it has not been written about, Knight donated millions of dollars to the Indiana library. When new books about him came out, he held book signings, all of the money raised from those events went to charity. One of the last ones that he did, my now wife got a book signed for my dad. She had class that evening and didn't get to the book signing until 20 minutes or so were left. There was a still a huge line when she got there. Knight continued to sign for over an hour after the scheduled end of the signing. He was forced to leave by his assistants to go to another event. Everyone who didn't get their book signed was asked to write down who the book was for and where they lived. Knight signed all of those books and had them mailed to the people who didn't get them signed at the event.

Duke does not have a mandatory retirement age. Some coaches at state colleges do (as a result of state employee rules about mandatory retirement) but Duke is a private school and subject only to their own retirement rules.

Even if Duke had a mandatory retirement age, why couldn't Coach k coach another team?

When I was at the Tech/Ok St game last saturday, I certainly didn't think I was watching Knight coach his last game. It came as a total shock to most here in Lubbock.

Now, there were rumors that this would be his last year, but a midseason resignation caught everyone off guard. Knight has made donations to the Texas Tech Library and has been a great asset to not only Texas Tech, but also to Lubbock. He is definitely revered in West Texas and will be missed as a coach. My understanding is that his son, Pat, would be given a 5 year contract once Bobby stepped down. I guess Pat has 5 years to prove that he can step in and continue to improve a basketball program that his father brought back from the dead.

Indiana expected to make NCAA [Basketball] allegations public.

It comes in response to October's announcement that a university investigation found [current basketball coach Kelvin] Sampson made more than 100 impermissible phone calls while still on NCAA probation for infractions he committed during his tenure at Oklahoma.

Funny how Indiana has NEVER had even a minor violation until now. The biggest deal ever was when Alford posedfor a charity calendar (legal now) and was suspended a game by the University. The NCAA was so embarrassed by it that they changed the rule. Now Indiana hires a guy already on probation and he violates that. I really think that Sampson will be fired after this year. He just flaunts the rules and lies.

Knight was a lot of things--but he didn't cheat.

The worst part of Alford missing a game was that he missed the game against Kentucky. Which at the time had just come off of a huge penalty for cheating.

I just think it set a bad precedent for a school who prided itself in playing by the rules to hire a cheater who was on probation and caried his probation and its terms with him to IU. Now the school is on the hook for what is deemed major violations because of his probation and his actions. The University has already taken away a scholarship and other things. But apparently Sampson lied about several things during the investigation and the NCAA has found other infractions that the University didn't even know at the time. To be honest, I'd have a tough time even lettign Sampson continue on right now. Make Dakich the interim coach to finish the year. You're not even on the hook to pay Sampson his contract because of cause.
