I think this is a good trade for both teams, especially if NJ buys out Stack and he resigns with Dallas in about a month.
Surprised to see that Dallas was willing to part with Diop, who is effective when covering the big C's in the conference. (His offense leaves much to be desired though)

Senator, your great dislike for of the best players and certainly one of the top point guards in the league amazes me.
What are the implications, fantasy wise? Does this make Dirk better or will he have less of a fantasy impact.
Certainly in the short term, I would doubt Kidd plays for the Nets ( or Dallas ) tonight, if anyone still has him

what's interesting is they are trying to compete in the west with teams with big men (Gasol/Bynum, Shaq, Duncan, etc) and to do so they trade away a valuable defensive post player and get a guard in return.

the trade is still dependent on a bunch of physicals and papr work so there is no chance of anyone involved playing today and I doubt they would play tomorrow...
I think the fantasy implications are very interesting (especially for the nets roster)

While still not official, details of the trade that will send Devin Harris to the Nets in exchange for Jason Kidd continue to emerge.
Kidd and F Malik Allen will go to Dallas for Harris, G/F Jerry Stackhouse, C DeSagana Diop, G/F Devean George, G Maurice Ager, $3 million and two future No. 1 draft picks. And in a seperate deal, the Nets will send G/F Antoine Wright to Dallas for a future second-round pick. Harris will start at point guard for the Nets as soon as he's healthy, while Stackhouse could see some solid minutes in New Jersey. Kidd will obviously run the point for Dallas, making them one of the top contenders for the championship, while Wright should be watched closely.

Couldn't help but chuckle a bit when I read this part of the article:
"The greater hesitation, sources said, is that they would also have to part with Stackhouse and Diop, weakening Dallas' depth. Even if the Nets do waive Stackhouse as expected and Dallas is able to re-sign him after a 30-day wait, losing Diop is a significant blow, as that leaves the inconsistent Erick Dampier as the Mavericks' only veteran center..."
I'm not sure Diop and the words "significant blow" should ever be used in the same sentence, especially when you're getting in return a walking triple double machine and future hall of famer.

stackhouse is actually a plus for the mavs though...cause NJ is paying his salary and the mavs get him back...i assume.
diop is a significant factor if dampier is your only big man for the playoffs.

I don't like it how Dallas gave away their future.
"Every team in the conference just got a lot better by adding big guys, so winning this year is going to be extremely hard. So, let's try to win this year, and give away our big man who would have defended those guys." Makes sense.
Those old Mavs teams with Nash, Finley, and Dirk didn't win. I don't see how this new one will. Dirk is Dirk, Finley and Howard are both very good, but replacing Nash with a cranky, aging prima-donna is not an upgrade. Who is going to guard Duncan? Shaq / Amare? Bynum / Gasol? Boozer? And if they miraculously make it to the finals, what about Garnett? Dwight?
Not to mention, Harris is a much better defender than Kidd, and there are a lot of good PG's they could meet up with in the playoffs (Paul, Deron, Nash, Parker, etc.)
The Nets did pretty well, considering their hands were tied. If they didn't move Kidd he would have just pouted and killed his trade value, and they would have gotten much less.

i think he was equating finley in those days and howard these days. i think howard is better though...and dirk is better now.
and kidd is WAY better than you give him credit for SU.
interested to see what happens in the AS game...might have to make each team 13 players

I don't like the dallas offense in the past. i am hopeful that there will be some kind of system with kidd coming along. no question he is a way better pointguard than devin harris. i am not happy with dampier being the only big man in the lineup. stack is a good shooter but also not very helpful for team basketball.

Obviousl if it was an EAST team he would. I mean there was a trade from the Reds to Dodgers (his name temp. escapes me) as a closer and he had never even played a game for LA yet wore that uniform in the ASG. My guess is that he wouldn't be able to play for the West unless he was a replacement. I mean you can't bump anyone. How can the West have an extra player?

I think Kidd - while a great player - was coveted by the Mavs because of his leadership skills. He is a floor general, period.
The Mavs lack that. Dirk is all-World, and i still think he has time to develop into the kind of player that can light a fire under his teammate's asses, but he hasn't done so yet.
Jason Kidd, however, can say "boys, follow my lead", and he will take them as far as they want to go.

i also think that, like any player that gets traded, kidd will have a chip on his shoulder and play as hard as possible. he knows that he's not getting younger so just like nash he will work harder than most players to prove his value.
the trade comes down to the simple question: do the maves want to win this or next season? or do they want to be in it for the long run. i don't see anything wrong in trying to get a title this season. dirk deserves it and so does the whole mavs team.

What is the reasoning behind this move if you're the Mavs?
Your team is soft, so you bring a mentally tough Kidd to win the championship?
I understand that last year's fiasco cannot be repeated, but come on, this is plain stupid.
You deal a young point guard who can play Tony Parker as good as anybody in this league for a 36% FG, 35 year old Jkidd?
Kidd is more creative than Harris, but is this what the Mavs were lacking?
Mavs needed interior scoring, a guy who would punish the Warriors of the world. A poor man's Boozer would be better than Kidd.
A frontline of Nowitzki, Dumber and Bass will get you nowhere against the Spurs, Lakers, and now Suns.
I personally think that the Mavs really screwed up here. They didn't learn anything going up against the Spurs all these years.
As a Spurs fan I'm really glad to see the stupidity of the Mavs front office, as a basketball fan this trade makes no sense to me.

The Nets don't even want George, just his expiring contract. George blocked the trade to preserve his "Larry Bird" rights, but the Mavs don't want him either. Makes zero sense.

From what I heard, if George gets traded, he loses his Larry Bird rights, and therefore will most assuredly have to end up signing a smaller dollar contract.
Which leads to the question: Why would he demand a trade if that was the case? Did his agents just read the rulebook and figure this out???

The NBA has ruled that Stackhouse can't be included in the trade now because he would be going into it by agreeing to be bought out and re-joining the Mavs in 30 days. Can anyone jsut keep their mouth closed anymore? The Nets want expiring contracts so Hassell isn't a real possibility.

Here is what Stern said about VH sign and trade. He seems to hint that VH might have to play as most expected?
"If he intends to resume his career, then they can do a sign-and-trade with him," said Joel Litvin, the league's president of league and basketball operations.
