0 Subject: Keeper league help

I'm still fairly new to fantasy basketball (after a long departure from the game) and was hoping for some fellow Gurupie help. It's a H2H keeper league that I was fortunate to finish 6th in (I was 3rd going into the playoffs and got bounced in the first round, and lost every consolation match :|)

Here's the stats we use: Points, Blocks, Steals, Assists, Offensive Rebounds, Rebounds, Field Goals Made, Free Throws Made, Three Pointers Made, FG %, FT%, A/TO
It's a little scoring heavy I think, but I'm not one to complain...

We keep 4 players and I'm a little torn on who to keep.

PG Steve Nash
SG Andre Iguodala
SF Caron Butler
PF Rudy Gay
C Andrew Bogut
G Jason Terry
F Danny Granger
UTIL Jamario Moon
UTIL Marvin Williams
BEN Linas Kleiza
BEN Nazr Mohammed
BEN Anderson Varejao
IR Daequan Cook

Obviously my bench/IR players are not keepers. :) I am thinking of keeping Iguodala, Butler, Gay, and Granger. Am I crazy for not thinking of keeping Nash? I think he'll put up solid assist numbers, but his production has decreased the past 2 years, he's going to be 35 next year, and Kerr has said that they are going to try to limit him in minutes and games this year. Any advise for what I should keep, what I should look for in the draft, sleepers I should look out for, basically anything. Thanks guys!

I'd say you are right on target, though I would also consider throwing Bogut in the mix too if not keeping Nash. He's a good young C and he passes pretty well too so I could see some assists from that position helping you fill your PG hole you'll have right out of the gate.

Coming from a guy who has never played in a keeper league - so take it for what it's worth - Unless you feel you have little chance to win this year, I would say you definitely keep Nash. He's a rock star. Declining numbers and 35 or not, he's still easily a first round pick. They said last year they were going to limit his minutes too, yet he played a TON. This year will be the same. They have no depth at PG. Plus, he's Steve Nash. He helps you in so many cats and helps huge. A/TO is a great cat for him. 90% FT shooter. Good three ball shooter. Still a good scorer. Huge Assists. 50% FG% from a 3-gunning PG. I mean he's a freak. Doesn't steal it a ton, but you've already got Iggy. I'd go Nash, AI, Granger, Caron. With Arenas out, Caron is a must keep, and Granger should be even better than last year this year. Bogut is a clear cut below in my mind. I can't argue that Gay is good and young, but I just can't see giving up a Steve Nash for him - unless you just feel you have no shot to win this year and want to definitely go long term. On the other hand, there may be guys out there in the draft that are as good as him, so you might even be able to get him back. The other thing about Nash is that even if you don't keep him for NEXT season, you probably will have someone else on your team you'd like to keep anyway. Seems you have about six this year. Just my .02. Good luck!!

Clarification - you might be able to get Gay back if you let him go, I meant. No way you'd get Nash back I wouldn't think unless you scored the first pick.

forgive me if i'm wrong but doesn't it matter what round you picked a certain player in. if you got nash as a first round pick last year and if you dump him now you get a first round pick this year. conversly if you keep nash you forfit your first round pick this year.
isn't the whole point of keeper leagues to keep the steals on your team. like if you picked caron butler in the 4th round last year and this year he is worth a 2nd rnd pick, of course you keep him and give up your 4th rnd pick this year.
i've never played in a keeper league but i was under the understanding this was how it worked.

With Brand on board in PhilsLand, Iguodola's stats are liable to take a hit. I like Nash,Granger, Butler and Gay.

Pacers, thanks for the advice. Nash is still a first rounder this year, but I really don't want to risk losing the potential talent that Gay offers. No matter who I drop I feel they will be snatched up before the 7th pick. If I'm able to redraft the 5th guy I'll do that in a heartbeat (unless there's insane value out there). I'm kind of surprised you think Gay would be the odd man out. Granger (for some reason) doesn't have PF eligibility, so he would occupy my F or UTIL spot, not that I'm nitpicking on positions. Its an extremely tough position to be in. I don't like it...

WonderB, while I pushed for doing that in all of our keeper leagues (this is a friends league with the same 12 guys in baseball, football and basketball) it is not like that. First 4 rounds are designated for keepers, the next 9 rounds are for new players.

And an update: I received a trade offer yesterday.
Danny Granger and 8th Rounder (90th Overall)
for
Rashard Lewis 7th Rounder (78th Overall)

I'm thinking that this is a no go right now, since this will only complicate things, but it's certainly worth a once over.

Oh and Goldcoach, I think Brand will only help Iggy, since Brand is going to draw the double team and will allow Iggy to slash better. He's also a 20-5-5-2-1 guy who will also throw in a 3P or two a night. And if they decide to take away his slashing with a double team that means his assists will go up with by dumping the ball into Brand. And he was my 2nd leading scorer and #2 assist guy, while leading steals and being a high percentage guy. He's a 2nd round value guy this year, is young with a rising stock, and basically undroppable. He and Caron are going to be on this team a long time (unless Caron proves to be injured every year, then I'm trading him).

I would not like to be the one dropping any of Iggy, Gay, Granger or Butler in a keeper league scenario. You can be a solid team for years with those 4. Unless you think you definitely have a chance to win right now with Nash, i would not keep him. It's a hard decision, obviously, but IMO, Nash won't be able to keep up those mind-blowing numbers for more than another year or 2.

Just my 2 cents...

If you can make trades why not try to find a team with weak keepers that would want to keep 2 of your players. With all those guys being like top 2 round keepers I can see many teams fitting that. Then try to trade whichever 2 you can for a top tier one.

Both Swish City and dpr sound right on to me. Kyle, you didn't think I would suggest dropping a Pacer, did you? ;-) Hey, that's why I said it was my 2 cents...you get what you pay for.

I looked at Granger's and Gay's stat lines from last year and they were almost identical, with Danny giving you a little better FT%, FTM, 3's made and Rudy giving you better FG%. Other than that it was pretty much a wash. Seems both players will meet or exceed their lines from last year. I agree Nash probably cannot physically keep his insanity up more than a couple more years - it's just that he's a win now kind of player and your keepers are so good - it seems you might have a real chance to win. You are right about considering roster flexibility, etc. Probably a couple of good choices for you. I agree I'd stay with Iggy and I also like his numbers to stay solid overall. He doesn't give you the blocks of Granger or Gay but he has more assists, steals, and a better A/TO ratio.

So the draft was tonight and just wrapped up. I'm pretty happy with how I did. I ended up keeping Butler, Gay, Granger, and Iguodala. So here's my team: (Just for reference I had the 7th pick. We snaked after our keepers so I was in the middle the entire draft.)

PG: Devin Harris, NJ PG (6th round)
SG: Andre Iguodala, Phi SG, SF (Keeper)
SF: Caron Butler, Was SF (Keeper)
PF: Rudy Gay, Mem SF, PF (Keeper)
C: Andrew Bogut, Mil C (7th round)
G: Rajon Rondo, Bos PG (8th round)
F: LaMarcus Aldridge, Por PF, C (5th round)
UTIL: Danny Granger, Ind SF (Keeper)
UTIL: Ronnie Brewer, Uta SG (9th round)
Bench: Raja Bell, Pho SG (10th round)
Bench: Antonio Daniels, Was PG (11th round)
Bench: DeShawn Stevenson, Was SG (12th round)
Bench: Kendrick Perkins, Bos C (13th round)

So I'm pretty happy with how this team came together. I have an inordinate amount of steals, which I am fine with, I could actually trade some of them for rebounds. I'm a little short on O-boards since Aldridge and Bogut are my only big guys. I've got some good scorers, I've got role players on the bench, and I don't have any major category killers. If you guys see any major holes, let me know but I think I've done pretty well for my 3rd NBA draft :)

Also with my steals I want to get my team name to involve to something with steals. I was thinking Robber Barons, but I would have to have Baron Davis for that. If anyone has anything good they want to share that'd be great! :) Thanks guys!

After further thought, Kyle you were right to keep Gay and lose Nash. I failed to consider the impact of D'Antoni leaving town on Nash this year (and in the future).

Well I thought I'd update this. Last year was not a good season for my players, so I made some changes around the trade deadline to get ready for the future (Hopefully) and was able to get rid of Butler's broken bones. We expanded the keepers to 5 after the draft last year, so obviously I have 6 players I'd like to keep. The stats are the same as post 0, but I want you all to let me know if I'm being crazy. Here's the only 6 players are keeper worthy.

Rajon Rondo, Bos (PG)
Devin Harris, NJ (PG)
Carmelo Anthony, Den (SF)
Rudy Gay, Mem (SF, PF)
LaMarcus Aldridge, Por (PF, C)
Tim Duncan, SA (PF, C)

I'm debating between Rondo and Duncan. After the playoffs I think Rondo could become a Jason Kidd-esque player. Duncan is on the downside of his career, and with Aldridge and the first pick after the keepers are selected (my hope is to get Blake Griffin) I should be able to replace Duncan's production. While he won't be 20-10 right away, I think Aldridge is ready to take the step up.

So someone talk me out of keeping Rondo over Duncan. I seem to get rid of the old for the new, and while it didn't exactly help me I don't think Nash would have been that big of an asset.

I'd actually keep both over Gay this year. Here's why: Gay had a down year and is not on people's radar like last year. I think he will bounce back and have a solid season though. If you drop Timmy there's no way you get him back unless you have the first pick or two. Depending on your draft position, you can get Gay back most likely with your first non-keeper pick. At worst, you still have two other PF/C eligible players and you can overcome timmy's poor FT% with all the other players you already have.
