Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Oct 24, 2008, 14:40

Now that the RIHC draft has finished, I invite each of the participants to share any reactions that they have. Feel free to say as much or as little as you wish. As a guide, you might consider the following questions:

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
2) What surprised you?
3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Outsiders who were not participating in the draft are also welcome to share their general reactions.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
I went mostly for (What I thought was) Best Available. Avoiding bad free throw shooters and try to find guys that do more than one thing.
The Top of my queue was gone many times, however.
I didnt expect anything else in this league.

2) What surprised you?
Cant think of anything right now.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
Past Halfway I had to change my plan a little, because at that point there was the Baron thingy, which now sounds not as worse as back then.
Im still pretty thin in Assists I realize that.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
Prolly grab a better back up PG. With Baron as my main man there. But there are so few really good ones in this format.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
Tough to say. I found Turkoglu a real good deal at that point.
Harrington might have been a round too soon and I really would have liked to have Kirilenko now instead.
Hoping for big things from Kevin Durant.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
Not too many players dropped so to find steals is tough.
Swish with Granger(2.07) looks like a pretty good deal. I considered him too, but thought a PG there was a better plan for me.
David West at 3.10 looks very good too.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
No one really. If I look half an hour to the list I might find one, but overall everyone kinda went where I thought they would go.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?
I honestly cant say, I like holt's team kinda... guru's too.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

My strength in drafting is going with the flow, and plucking value picks off of the board when guys fall too far. I use a pair of projections, sorted (supposedly!) for value in the RIHC format and use them as a general guide for my picks. When the two projections both agree, I tended to gravitate towards that player.

Yes it went as expected, and I had noticed that the majority of my first 8 picks had all been taken by me with the latest pick of all of the RIHC drafts at the time.

2) What surprised you?

It shouldn't, but it always at least annoys you when your queue consistently disappears in front of you. footwedge screwed me three straight times in odd-numbered rounds.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It changed right away when Dwight Howard was there in Round 1. I knew what it meant to draft him, and significant choices in my draft thereafter were affected by this one choice.....obviously.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Nothing. It was fun to draft with the challenge of accounting for Howard's torpedoing of my FT%.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

I like Jason Kidd at 3.11.

I am concerned with Shawn Marion at 2.02. Reviews on his preseason are bad in terms of his fitting into the Miami offense.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Danny Granger - 2.07
Rudy Gay - 3.06
Tyson Chandler - 7.03

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Baron Davis 2.05
Andrew Bynum 4.04
Mo Williams 4.10

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

I generally try to pick what I perceive to be the best values and fill in the other spots later. Due to the scarcity of quality centers and a point guards I tried to draft one of each early and fortunately managed to do so.

2) What surprised you?

The early rounds went as expected. I was surprised to end up drafting three rookies, which happened to be the top three picks in this years draft. I usually avoid drafting rookies because I find them hard to value, but I felt all three were excellent value when I drafted them.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

I ended up quite weak in blocks. After I drafted Boozer as one of my centers I realized this might be a problem. After I drafted Okur in the 5th round, I became more concerned. I'm not sure I managed to rectify the situation, but couldn't seem to make a pick that would improve blocks without giving up what I felt was much better value elsewhere.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

I would have drafted McGrady in the eighth round instead of Ginobili.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

I really liked Mayo at 9.06, Rose at 10.07 and Robinson at 13.02.

I'm not happy with Ginobili at 8.07 because I should have picked McGrady instead.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Rudy Gay - 3.06
Kevin Martin 4.02
Tracy McGrady 8.08

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Al Jefferson 2.01
Baron Davis 2.05
Mo Williams 4.10
Lamar Odom 4.12

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

My strategy is usually to just take the best player available unless I have a specific need to address. I usually get over eager to grab my favorite sleepers (see my RIHC draft 3 years ago when I picked Chandler in round 4 and JOEL PRZYBILLA in round 5). To counteract that, before each pick I checked the "average picks" feature on Kafenatid to make sure I wasn't reaching too far. I also made a concerted effort to go for proven talent over unknown upside.

I am happy with how things turned out and think I got a very qualified and well rounded team.

2) What surprised you?

I was surprised that a lot of guys that I wanted actually lasted until my pick in each round. Of course there were those spots where someone would snag a guy I wanted right before me but it didn't happen enough to give me a headache.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

I got really worried that my assists would be weak but every time my turn came up I just could not justify picking one of the point guards remaining when there were much better players at other positions. Finally I bit on a few mediocre point guards later in the draft but I'm not too stoked about that bunch. I'm hoping that guys like Wade, McGrady, Stephen Jackson, Brad Miller and Diaw will shore up my assist total.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

I don't regret most of my picks. Perhaps I would have avoided Brad Miller in round 7 and taken John Salmons instead. Also, Jameer Nelson instead of Mayo might have been a mistake.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Best picks: Dwyane Wade, Tyrus Thomas, Bobby Simmons

Worst picks: Jameer Nelson, Brad Miller

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

4.07 Vince Carter
5.08 Al Horford
7.12 John Salmons
12.10 Udonis Haslem

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

4.04 Andrew Bynum
7.01 Jason Terry
8.11 Jamario Moon

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
My strategy was very simple....try not to embarrass myself.
Whether I accomplished that is still up for debate.
My normal MO is to find the best value and not over-reach for my favorite players.

2) What surprised you?
I was surprised at the number of times the Guru picked from the top of my cheat sheet.
I thought he had some super secret method using one of his stat crunching links that he offers on his site but only he understands how to use it to value players and he would be picking players that nobody ever heard of.
DJ picked a few of the players I was targeting but I expect that kind of thing from him.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
Normally I have plenty of PG's and I overkill the assist category.
This season I will need one of my late round fliers to pan out if I want to score more than 1 point.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
Probably look to get a decent PG in the middle rounds.
I would also try to do a better job of hiding my cheat sheets from Guru.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
I am satisfied with most of my picks for the most part.
I dont think that any of them were absolute steals nor am I seriously disappointed with any of them.
I suppose getting Redd at 5.07 was good value and I'm thinking that J.R. Smith at 10.06 could have been delayed and still been there the next round.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
I only have two picks here:
Shaq at 11.11 will be far and away the steal of the draft.
In one interview I saw with Shaq he seemed very focused on establishing his NBA legacy.
You heard it here first folks.
(I hope I didnt just ruin my chances of making a trade with Species)
David Lee at 6.05 will pay huge dividends in an uptempo D'Antoni offense.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
Marion at 2.02 was a steep price to pay.
All the rookies going so early.
It ususally takes most rookies a year or two to get acclimated to the league....I will wait to look at them for next season once they have been acclimated.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?
I think most teams are very solid but I think Swish has a decently well rounded team.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
Overall, I was hoping to try to balance the goals of taking the best player available with maintaining a balanced roster. I also was hoping to nab a super stud PG with my first round pick and then follow that up with a stud PF/C type. I wanted to try to stay with the PG/PF approach if at all possible. I also decided I was NOT going to over-reach to address position or stat scarcity, so I knew there was a good chance my PG/PF plan would not hold up. My view is often where there is a run on a position (e.g. PG or C) the best values are opposing the run. Those positions can often be addressed at a lower tier later in the draft without reaching. Of course picking nearly on the ends, I realized at times I might have to draft a player I really wanted a little higher than I might like to take him, or I would probably see him disappear in the next 20 picks.

I also wanted to try and take some Pacers this year if they were available at an appropriate draft spot. That ended up working out pretty well. In fact, I made four picks in a row of current or former Pacers.

I ended up having to pick against runs most of the time, so I didn’t really get to follow my PG/PF model. In fact, I was in nearly the opposite configuration early, with 4 wing players and a Center after five rounds and not picking again until #71 overall. And my C, Yao, could easily miss over half the season if things do not play out well.

2) What surprised you?
What surprised me was just how desperate people were to get PG’s in this league. I was hoping to get a good PG in the third round after I locked up my big man, when suddenly both Calderon and Billups went off the board – still in round 2. Calderon I think could be a legit second rounder if things go well as they did last year – though at times in extended minutes last year his stats suffered on a per minute basis. Billups, though, I thought was just too early here. I was going to consider him a few picks later so maybe I’m splitting hairs – but I did think there was a big drop off after him among PGs (if you consider Joe Johnson a SG), so I can see why Mike D pulled him when he did. Still, he just doesn’t feel like a second rounder to me this year for some reason. Maybe it’s his age, maybe it’s the emergence of Rodney Stuckey, IDK. Probably it’s the # of strong picks made after him.

I was surprised Guru snagged down on Andrew Bynum already early in the fourth round. I think he’s going to be huge and I was going to get him on the 4th/5th round turn, so he was smart to get him then if he wanted him. I was just hoping no one else would see him as having this high of value, but obviously Guru did.

I was also a little surprised Dunleavy was still available early in the fifth. I think his knee scared some people off, as well as worries about a let down. I think both are legitimate worries, and I hope I guessed right. The Pacers and Dunleavy were initially minimizing the knee issue and I should have trusted that little twinge that “something’s not right here.”

I was a little surprised Murphy went where he did because I thought he would fall a round or two farther. He’s a big that doesn’t shoot a great percentage from the floor and doesn’t get a lot of blocks. His rebounds aren’t exactly impressive either lately.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
Well, I ended up taking 4 SG’s and SF’s with the first five picks b/c I felt they were the BPA. Dunleavy I think has third round value if he has another year like last and with T.J. I think he has a chance if he can get over his knee. Obviously I was crushed not to get Paul with the 2nd overall pick but Lebron was a nice consolation prize there.

Since I felt PG's were coming off too early and I wasn't going to reach for one, I tried to draft players at other positions who had good assists, such as Lebron, Dunleavy, Joe Johnson, Artest, etc. I was hoping to counteract the PG runs with this strategy. Of course it was great for steals too but kind of hurt me on blocks since I had no bigs early. I tried to plug those wholes with later round picks that I hope don't come back to bite me (J.O., Jamario Moon, Amir Johnson).

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
I’m not sure where I am going to end up in FG% or FT% ranking. In past years I’ve tried to plot out projections in a spreadsheet and compare teams and I did not do that this year. I went more on feel and gut for who is good value where. I tried to keep an eye on the cats as I went along. That could end up costing me big time. I don’t know if I ever came back to adequately counteract LBJ’s FT% for example. I think I am going to rock in steals and be ‘ok’ in assists and I’m not sure about blocks and threes. I started chasing blocks late because I felt I was severely lacking there and I did not want to punt any cats. My hope is that folks will be willing to trade, if I find I have too much of something and not enough of another. I felt steals was a good cat to stock up on.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
I think my worst pick may well end up being Jamario Moon at 8.11. I took him for his ability to block shots (I didn’t like any of the bigs that were available at the time in that spot) but now he may not even be starting up in Toronto. 8th round is too early to gamble and this seemed more of a desperation pick than solid value here. It could work out fine, but this pick may be my early favorite for bust pick. I’ll probably hold on to him for a while even if he sux b/c I don’t want to cut him right before he is named as the starter.

A close second may be Stephon Marbury in the 13th. Who knows when he is going to get exiled from the team or something and I’ll have nothing for this pick. Crawford could get back into D’Antoni’s good graces and Marbury may be left on the bench. Who knows. I guess I just thought it was a good gamble with a late pick. High risk with potentially high reward if Marbury gets it together and actually gets to run and gun a lot in D’Antoni’s system.

My best pick may be….wow there are so many good choices 
It’s hard to know if J.O. will pan out, but if he even gives 14 and 7 with 1.7 blocks, I’ll take that in the 7th round. He could even approach 17 and 9 with 2.2 blocks. Ok, I’m in dreamland but still it’s hard to root against the guy. A change of scenery for a player like him could do wonders.

I think T.J. Ford at pick #71 is excellent value. I feel/hope he will stay healthy this year and he’s going to do a lot on this Pacer team. I think he could easily reach 17 and 8. He’s also going to shoot more threes, so his % will suffer some, but hopefully he gets to the basket a lot and that helps.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
I thought Ray Allen at 6.12 by Holt was outstanding value, and I’d have taken him too if it wouldn’t have been my 5th SG/SF out of six picks.

Pierce at the end of the third round was a steal by s R. Love that pick there.

I think Udonis Haslem at 12.10 by Mike D was genius. I’m happy with Amir Johnson right after that pick but now that Haslem will be starting at C and getting run, it’s tough to say anything bad about this pick.

Stephen Jackson at 4.08 was a nice pick by Knicksfan, assuming he compensated for the low FG%. Captain Jack is going to put up huge scoring numbers and threes and should be decent in the other counters as well.

David West at 3.10 was a real nice pick by footwedge. Love the %s.

Kevin Martin at 4.02 is going to be huge for Species.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
I thought Love and Sessions were a really weak tandem for Holt in the 12th and 13th, as if perhaps he picked them from early cheat sheet rankings and didn’t check preseason developments. Maybe he was in a hurry. Maybe he will own me and make me eat these words.

I have no idea why Mike D took Tinsley in the 14th round. I guess for the same reason I took Marbury in the 13th. However, Marbury has a team. Tinsley has a huge post-Pacers hangover and 0 minutes.

I was really surprised Species took Howard in the first round and punted FT% that early. If he was around at 2.11 I was going to give him strong consideration to try the same trick with Lebron’s FT%....but boy to go that way already in the first round….I just was surprised. We’ll see how it works out.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Probably Guru’s team. I pretty much like it top to bottom with good solid picks all the way through.

I thought it was another great RIHC draft and a great experience all around. Hopefully I can hold my own this year against some players who really know what they're doing.

Yeah, that was a case where I had to decide if it was worth committing to him earlier to ensure I got him, since I'd have to wait 20 picks, but I just felt he was too much of a gamble to go 2nd or even early third round on him. No way I take him before Joe Johnson. Likewise, I felt like 50 to 75 good games from Yao was worth more than Bynum, esp. for his FT% and his general first round worth when he is healthy/playing. I really hoped to see Bynum at 4.11 but knew there was a good chance I wouldn't.

I had the exact same decision on T.J. Ford at 6.11, a player I was high on and was also targeting in this draft...but in T.J.'s case I felt if I didn't take him @ 6.11, He might not even make it back to me at even 7.02, since after Chris Paul, Holt had taken 3 bigs and a SF. Sure enough, Holt chose 2 SG's. I wonder if I had waited until 8.11, whether T.J. would have still been on the board. Then again, with this group and Mike D esp. picking right in front of me, there is no way he would have made it back to me. Or at least I'd like to think not.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Best player available combined with an eye toward rarer categories. I knew I'd likely get Kobe with pick 3, or possibly LeBron. I tried projecting who might be available at later picks, but that's pretty tough when picking near an end.

2) What surprised you?

After the dice roll, s R took draft spot 12. With the second choice. I'm still amazed by that. I've never seen it done.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It never really did.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Nothing I can think of.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Mo Williams, mostly because people think it was a poor pick, so when it turns out to be pretty good, it will seem even sweeter. ;)

Tinsley, if he's traded to a team where he can run and gun and play good minutes.

Williams, if he dogs it. Tinsley, if he takes a season-long vacation. ;)

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Vince Carter and Ray Allen.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Bynum. Calderon. Moon.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Maybe Footwedge or Species.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

I basically was planning to go with the best available for the first few rounds, then fill in position needs. I really wanted to get PG and C filled early and fill in around that. Centers were a little tougher than I planned.

2) What surprised you?

Nothing extraordinary.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

Once I figures out who was in Species queue I just went with that.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

I passed a few chances to take a center that was a bit of a reach, but in hindsight question if I should have. One was Josh Howard 6.04 maybe Oden, Chandler or Biedrens would have filled a more pressing need.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

I liked Scola 11.10 hoping for a solid producer there. Worst would be Nene 10.4 still don't know why I took him other than center panic. He's not much better than many filler centers from 12-13 rounds. (Wilcox, Blache or Darko)

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Carter dropping to 4.7 may be a good bargin. Also with rookies K Love at 12.12 may be a good pickup if he can produce solid 10-8 numbers and Rose at 10.7 should out produce several PG that went earlier.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Calderon at 2.9 a little but really nothing I couldn't justify.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

I would say Species, but I have half of his team already.

I'll stand by the Love pick, but Sessions was admittedly pretty weak. I did read the latest news, and there seemed a chance he might somehow go into the season with a chance at some minutes. I just really didn't see that many players that I wanted to give starts. Some of the players I might have taken in Sessions' place are still available as FA's so I'm not too worried about it.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

No specific strategy, really. It probably would have went down differently for me if Amare had not been available at 4, but i was happy to get that solid C base to start with.

2) What surprised you?

I was taken aback at the lengths that peeps were going to get their PGs and Cs. I did my best to fight the trend and not reach too far, but maybe i'm the one who got it wrong. I guess we'll soon see!

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

After losing out on all of the top tier PGs (Paul, Baron, Nash, Iverson, Deron) in rounds 1 and 2, i realised quickly that if i wanted to guarantee players, i couldn't sleep on them too much. That prompted me to trade up for Granger with Florian. I think this will turn out to be a good decision. I was happy to let others reach for PGs and Cs and just take the players that came naturally down to me. As it turned out, i was stunned to be able to land Rudy Gay in round 3, especially after trading down in rounds 3 and 5 in order to get Granger. I thought he'd be long gone.

As the draft went on, i was happy to see that i was drafting a lot of players that could help in multiple categories. In guys like Villanueva, Wilson Chandler and Andray Blatche, i think i've managed to tab a lot of guys that provide in non-traditional stats for their position.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Not a lot. I thought my draft started superbly, but i was really uncomfortable with some of my mid-round selections due to not having enough time to prepare whilst out of town. I'm also not sure if i payed enough attention to the % categories, although when i look at them at the end, they don't look nearly as bad as i thought they might.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

My best picks have to be Granger at 2.07 and Gay at 3.06. Granger could easily be a top 10 player by the end of the year, and Rudy also has a very good chance to be a top 15 player if it all goes right. With the 19th and and 30th picks, i feel that's great value.

I think my worst picks might be my PGs Harris and Bibby. It's not that i think they're busts, i just wish i was able to grab a higher level PG without reaching. These 2 are just about #1 fantasy PGs, but only just. Not the same as having a Deron, Nash, Calderon boosting my assist totals.

Gilbert Arenas could easily be my best or worst pick. If he comes back in early December and tears it up, then i have absolutely no doubt that i'll be challenging for the title come April. Whether that will happen or not is anyone's guess.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Rashard Lewis was a really nice pick at 3.05.
I thought Pierce at 3.12 was a doozy of a pick. Great value.
Ray Allen at 6.12 was really nice too if he can stay healthy.
Haslem at 12.10 was a superb value for Mike D.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

4.01 Brandon Roy - i just don't like his numbers to improve much...Portland is so deep nowadays.
8.11 Jamario Moon - His place in the rotation is still very unstable. Several rounds too high for him, IMO.
10.05 Anthony Carter - I don't understand this pick here when guys like Ridnour, Rose and Conley were all available.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

I actually like Species team a lot, despite the FT% tank. And obviously, Mike D will win 3s by a country mile like he does every year!

Once I finished this draft, I had to immediately turn my attention to salary cap drafts and some web site maintenance. So I hadn’t even looked in this thread until today. Hopefully, I can still remember what I was thinking.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
My strategy is generally to try to nab a top PG and a decent center in the top 4 picks, and to defer on pure shooters until later. Other than that, I try to keep tabs on my relative strengths and weaknesses so that I can address them as the draft unfolds (by either fixing the weaknesses or punting, if appropriate).

2) What surprised you?
In the late rounds, my targeted players were getting stolen more than I expected. I was a bit surprised that people seemed to be picking from my queue in rounds 13-15. By that time, I would think there might be more variety.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
As I recall, it seemed as though I was always a bit behind in 3 point shooting, so when I had a choice of comparable players, I often went with the one who offered better treys. (But I might be thinking of a different draft.)

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
Nothing.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
Time will tell. I like Deron Williams in round 1, even though he ended up missing the first week. Kirilenko could be good value for a late 7th rounder.

I don’t hate any pick yet. Give it a few more weeks.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
As others have noted, I also like Granger at 2.07 and Gay at 3.06. I almost took Granger at 2.04, but couldn’t pass on Butler – who should be worth it if he can stay healthy.

Gerald Wallace was good value at 5.05 – if he can stay moderately healthy.

David Lee has good value at 6.05, but I took Biedrins at 6.04 because I wanted a better shot blocker in a center slot.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
Calderon (2.09) and Billups (2.10) caught me by surprise at the time. At that point, I knew that PGs would be at a premium.

I’m interested to see that some thought that Bynum went early at 4.04, but others would have snagged him within a few picks if I hadn’t taken him. I’ll admit that I didn’t have him ranked that high based on raw stats, but I thought that he was worth it based the potential and the expected run on centers.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?
I like the teams of Holt, Species, and Pacers Rule
