0 Subject: Celtics - Lakers - up close

I scored two tickets to the Celtics-Lakers game in Boston tonight, and I think we might be in the second row of floor seats along one end. (Section 6, Row BB - does that sound like floor seating?)

I'll be going with my son (Jaydog). He has a Blackberry, so we may be able to post from the game at some point.

I expect nothing less than a full "Species at Spring Training" level write-up.

David Justice jersey and Indians hat is how I would recognize him.

Also Row BB implies 28th row to me but I have no idea.

According to the Boston Garden site Row BB is an invalid row. If it's row B you will be right under the hoop, real close to the action.

I propose that anyone who sees Guru on TV during the game gets a free Rotoguru t-shirt. Sort of a "spot da Guru" contest. You can limit the winners to say 40 or 50. ;)

Invalid row? He'll be even easier to spot if he's standing.

I think that row BB is the second row of chairs on the floor. Maybe it's not on the seating chart because they don't always set up the chairs. My son's friend says that the courtside seats along the end line are AA, BB, and CC.

I'll be wearing a dark blue shirt with CONNECTICUT in large white letters across the chest, and a Husky logo in the center.

BTW, my best guess is the corner closest to the Lakers bench. But I might be wrong about that. Will try to post something after we're there.

Maybe I can razz Bynum for screwing up my RIHC team.

Just a suggestion, but you might consider helping us out in our efforts to spot you. Maybe a rainbow colored afro wig, and while your at it, be holding up a large John 3:16 sign.

We'd appreciate it.

11.....LOL

Or better yet, perhaps Guru can come dressed in full Morganna-like garb, run/bounce across the court and lay a big wet one on Rajon Rondo!
Extra TSNP for that feat!!!

We are sitting courtside right by the Lakers bench. Second row on the baseline, two seats on the end. My son is wearing a green Celtics hat and shirt. Who can find us???

Hey, who is that dude with the John 3:16 sign heckling Bynum? Nice breasts on him too.

We need it to come ON TV first, then, the game within the game begins.

A striped shirt like Waldo would have been much more helpful.

That is true - it was my second. The doctor did say to drink plenty of fluids, though.

[I think he said "fluids" and not "water", though I might be "misremembering" that...]

I just returned home after staying overnight with my son at his place in Boston.

I'll have to review and edit some photos, and draft some comments. Since the game was nationally televised, I probably don't have to comment much on the game itself, but the view from our seats was certainly not what I'm used to.

I'll try to post something later today.

Damn--I missed this thread, because I was watching the game on the big screen in high def!

I agree with weykool. Maybe a rainbow wig and a "John 3:12" sign would have been better...

It was really weird to NOT watch the basketball game as the players were moving right to left, and back, at the beginning of the game. I was just focused on the crowd and the area Guru was sitting in to spot him. Whistles were blowing and I could see things happening in my peripheral vision, but the camera kept jumping around while I focused on an area "near" the court (lol).

In a nutshell, RSF, when you watch the DVR......drink heavily before hand.

Chapter 1 - pregame:

Last October, I was notified by the NBA that I had won 2 tickets to an NBA game as part of a prize for last year's NBA Stock Exchange game. I was surprised, because I thought I finished second in a winner-take-all league, but when they offered me the prize, I didn't turn it down. They asked me to provide a list of three alternative game dates for either the Celtics or Knicks. I picked three Celtics games - one vs. the Lakers, one vs. the Cavs, and one vs. Miami.

In January, they notified me that I would be getting tickets for the March 6 game vs. Cleveland. But then, on the evening of Feb 4, I received two e-tickets to the Feb 5 Lakers-Celtics game. I'm not sure why the late switch, but fortunately, I was available to go, as was my son Jason (aka Jaydog), who lives in the Boston area. Earlier in the day, we determined that the seats were on the baseline, in the second row of folding chairs. With seats that close to the floor, we decided to arrive when the doors opened to watch some of the pregame shootaround.

Here I am arriving at our seats.

We were at the end with the Lakers' basket for the first half, and the guys who were currently "shooting around" were Gasol, Odom, Chris Mihm, DJ Mbenga, and Sun Yue, along with coaches Brian Shaw, Jim Cleamons, and Kurt Rambis. (It took me awhile to recognize Rambis, since he was not wearing glasses.) The dominant impression was height. Gasol, who was situated closest to us, really seemed tall, but Mbenga is also a giant, and Mihm and Odom are not short. Even Sun Yue is listed at 6-9, which seemed about right. I tried taking a bunch of photos, but almost all turned out blurry, and it was clear that our photo ops needed to focus on more stationary situations, like Gasol at the foul line.

That's Rambis in the white shirt on the far left. I think the guy in the black outfit was just a ball retriever.

It didn't take long before the shootaround got pretty repetitive, and it was more interesting to see some of the other recognizable personalities. For example, here is Steven A. Smith yakking with JoJo White.

Although at this particular moment, Smith's mouth is shut and White is talking, that was not their normal roles. Note also Tom Heinsohn in the far right background.

I'll pause for now. Stay tuned...

Cool pics. Once you sit in such nice seats it makes sitting up higher really difficult. I only get down to see the Sixers about once a year now, so I make sure to get prime seats.

Excellent photos thus far Guru! Is it me or has Jo Jo White never aged??? Gee whiz. The dude looks like he could still play some ball.

Now don't forget to fill us in on the other not-so-subtle happenings that night Guru. For instance, was your sight obstructed by others around you? How was the food? Did your son like the cheerleaders?...and other pertinent details. : > )

Chapter 2

Our seats were a lousy vantage point for watching the starting lineup introductions. People (including players) were all over the place, blocking most of the view. No big deal. We could look overhead at the jumbotron to see what was happening on the court.

Once the game began, though, the view improved - once the Lakers finally scored. Evidently, the Laker bench players all remain standing until the first Laker points are scored, and some of the players wrapped around the corner of the baseline, pretty much killing our view of anything at the far end of the court. The Celtics scored the first several baskets, but finally the Lakers got on the board and all of the players immediately sat down, and the view was much better.

Odom drew two quick fouls, and found himself on the bench. He was not amused - at first. However, once he cooled off - literally and figuratively - he was having some fun razzing one of the fans in the row in front of us. I could really make out what he was saying - and I suspect he may have known the guy he was bantering with - but he was clearly having some fun, (It may have been one of the TNT guys he was yapping with - either a cameraman, or maybe the guy that keeps the wire out of the way.

This was evidently an early up-fake by Kobe. Most of the action moved too fast for photography, but this one turned out kind of cool. Notice the "ball vapor" that rises up and over his forehead.

Here is Luke Walton preparing to inbound the ball.

The guys leaning over in teh left foreground with the grey shirt was a TNT cameraman.

Kobe took a breather late in the first period. Here he is, zipping up (so to speak).

Here is a typical view looking up the Laker bench. Question - why is Phil Jackson's head so much higher than anyone else's? Does he have a booster seat?

Whenever Kobe was out, he usually sat at our end of the bench. Ditto for Odom. I guess they liked to stay away from the coach.

This must have happened during the second half, since Pierce is at the line. Obviously, the Celtics were shooting at our end for the second half.

More to come...

In the Kobe zipping up picture the look from Powell seems to be saying "These pictures better not end up on some internet site".

I hope you had him sign a release.

Jackson has a really bad back so he's had a specialty seat for a few years now. It is raised a little bit and filled to the brim with padding.

Phil Jackson has extremely short legs, but ridiculously long upper body

Great pics Guru, in a great game too (even though I hate the Lakers...)

Chapter 3:

A few more random observations.

Ray Allen is really active. He spends so much time on offense running circles around the offense, trying to run around screens. It was exhausting to watch up close. Reminded me alot of Rip Hamilton. Must be a UConn trait.

Rondo was only 2 rebounds shy of a triple double, but I had no idea until I got home and looked at the boxscore. There were several instances in the second half when he drove toward the hoop and the Lakers played a "matador" defense. I thought maybe they had intended to let Rondo take shots, although after one instance, Phil Jackson jumped out of his seat and called a time out - obviously displeased. If they did want to allow him to shoot, I suppose they had something other than 2-footers in mind.

At halftime, someone passed out copies of complete halftime stats to everyone seated around the court. I was able to do some mental TSNP calculations on the spot.

Chris Mihm managed to get in the game for about 2 minutes in the first half. They weren't memorable.

Gasol seemed to be somewhat neutralized when Garnett was guarding him. But when Garnett was out, he pretty much had his way.

Wish I could have seen Bynum. He wasn't even there.

Craig Sager must have done a dozen laps of the court. It seemed like every timeout, he wandered by, usually walking right past me en route to the TNT table (Marv Albert, Reggie Miller, and Doug Collins) - but he never returned by backtracking, instead completing his circuit of the court. He was taller than I expected. His suit looked like it was made out of a horse blanket (grey with thin, light orange horizontal and vertical stripes) - not nearly as flamboyant as he often is. Unfortunately, I never had my camera poised when he strolled by.
