Copied from today's blurb page:
RotoGuru Sponsor of the MonthDraftbug.com offers daily fantasy sports contests. Players compete in real money or play money contests. Registration is free and takes less than a minute. Deposits can be made by credit card or Paypal, and withdrawals are paid by check. Compete in salary cap or live draft formats. No need to commit to a full season - draft today, win tomorrow! Anyone registering prior to March 1st will receive 4,000 player points free, which will allow entry in $4 of real money contests. As a special limited promotion, Draftbug will provide $10 more of free player points to select expert players - send an email to Guru (davehall@rotoguru2.com) for details. NBA basketball and NHL hockey contests are running now, and MLB Opening Day is April 5th. Register via the link here, or simply go to draftbug.com and enter guru in the promotional code field. |

Today I am announcing an affiliation with a new fantasy sports game, DraftBug.com. Among the appeals of this game:- You can register for free. No need to prefund an account before trying it out.
- New contests are offered daily, and most (maybe all) are for one day only. No need for a long term commitment. Play when you have the time, skip it when you’re busy.
- You can enter “play money” contests as a means to try it out without committing actual money.
- There are plenty of low-priced cash contests. Entry fees can be as low as $1.00.
- Some contests use a salary cap limitation. Others use a “snake draft” approach, so you don’t have to “share” your players with any other entrant.
Here’s the real kicker: I plan to provide limited sortable stats support for the game. Player prices have been loaded into the database, and will change periodically (but not daily). Fantasy points will be tracked and updated daily. (Note: for basketball, only the sortable stats will be updated (including the projection capabilities. Player pages will not include Draft Bug data for hoops. When baseball begins, I hope to have the data fully integrated into all RotoGuru programs.) Note also that there are hockey contests. I won’t be setting up stats support for hockey, but this may provide an interesting outlet for some of you hockey fans. The sortable stats are already up for this game. Hopefully, I haven’t bungled anything. I’ve been told that prices will be updated every week or so, but there may also be occasional daily updates for selected prices. If you notice an incorrect player price, please report it. I’ll be working on getting more automated price feeds as we go along.

Feel free to post questions, comments, and issues here. I've been dabbling with this game for the past couple of weeks, but do not consider myself fully up-to-speed on all of the nuances. I've asked one of the game's promoters to follow this thread as well, so that we can get more reliable answers to questions that I can't answer.

By the way, just as a heads up - I discovered a glitch in the 2-person play money contest. The prizes listed are wrong. The entry fee is 100, and I believe the prize is a winner-take-all 200. The listed prizes are those that apply to a 6-person contest.
I've notified the contest promoter.

This game is very similar to one offered on rotoworld: snapdraft. Not sure if anyone has looked at that game or not. i prefer that site because it is easier to find open games to play it seems. However this game may still be in its growing phases. Also this one offers live drafts which seem cool.

Draft Bug started up last fall, and activity during the winter has been light as the early emphasis has been on game development rather than promotion.
I imagine activity will pick up when baseball begins. I have heard that there are a lot of potential affiliates looking it over now. Obviously, a growing base of users will be critical to longer term success.

dpr - I'm the Draftbug promoter that Guru mentioned. As he said, we're really in the very early infancy of the game. I believe that traffic will increase very substantially even before baseball season begins.
Obviously I'm biased, but here are two of the things that I think set us apart from Snapdraft:
1. Our contest engine is VERY flexible. In addition to more standard contests, we've been running things like '3 pointers only' basketball contests, 'goalies only' hockey contests, and my favorite: 'NHL bullies' hockey contests where you score points based on the penalty minutes your players compile. Basically if you have an idea for a contest you'd like to see, let us know and we can set it up.
2. Our "rake" for contests (the portion of fees that doesn't go into the prize pool) is generally 10%. Snapdraft usually charges around 20%, which makes it very tough for even the best players to come out ahead in the long run.

I spent a fair amount of effort cleaning up my database this morning. Some of the prices were off, and some of the positions had been a changed. I learned that positions can change from day to day, and are based on a feed from the game's stat provider. I'm assuming that these changes will be fairly limited, but time will tell.
There are also some glitches related to traded players. For example, Shawn Marion was still listed on Miami, so he wasn't eligible for today's contests (since Miami doesn't play but Toronto does). These team changes should get cleaned up shortly.
If you are trying out the game (and I know some of you are), some patience will probably be necessary in the early days.

I am a draft bug now. The site seems pretty cool and easy to use. I will start with the free games until i get a feel for it and then look at the other options.
With 6 player games it may be fun to do one from this forum each night.
Anyone else doing the NBA on draft bug?

I'm in the 6-player free contest, along with G. Still two spots open for tonight.
Not sure if the other two are Gurupies or not.
I played in my first pay contest $1 last night - a two-person contest. Would have won if Garnett hadn't gotten injured. Still lost by only 4 pts.

Well day one seems to be a success. I think I will try the $ tomorrow.
Guru, is the "live scoring/results" off quite a bit? For example it shows Nash with 2 right now. He clearly has more than 2. The same for Durant who has only a few points but as of 11:45 EST has way more than just a few.

The live scoring seems to be quite delayed, and some players tend to be missing.

G & Guru - I believe our NBA feed is supposed to update at the end of each quarter, although it does seem to be slower than that. NHL, MLB, and NFL are all (I think) live.

did the money game H2H tonight and really enjoying it. Surprised more haven't checked it out from here.
One comment, the live scoring seemed to work well tonight until the end of the last game (GSW/OKC). Now that the game is over the scores for players in that game went back to the first quarter. Kind of odd, because it was correct until the game ended.

Ok still love the site but still hating the live scoring. It works sometimes and then other times it is a disaster. What is the plan on this?

G - I think I saw you talking to the site operator about the live scoring last night. Did you get your questions answered?

I started messing around with the site a few days ago. The potential is there for it to be a great alternative to standard draft leagues and those who don't want the commitment that TSN entails.
The communication is top notch and the guys who run the site seem to really care what the users think.
It is very similar to a lot of poker sites. They basically take a 10% rake from what I can tell. Not bad at all for the service they offer.

RE 18 - yeah I got a couple of things cleared up. Thanks for asking. Live scoring is still work in progress it seems
RE 19 - agreed 100%. If you haven't checked it out yet I would highly recommend it. I was playing my first NBA Hoops game (similar to TSN) in about 5 minutes. Been back to play a handful each day since.

Just thought I'd mention that traffic has begun picking up, and we've also raised the highest buy in that we're offering. There's a heads up $10+$1 basketball contest being offered for the first time for tonight's games.

This is a minor detail but when I go to "my contests" I see all of my games (both todays and a history of past games) which is good. However, they all belnd together. Have you given any thought to making the completed games a different color (grey).

I've been advised that there will be a mass price change (i.e., player prices) taking place tonight, to be effective for tomorrow's contests. I'll have the updates posted tonight.

Also, starting today, I'm posting a daily recap of all DBP scored the prior day - sorted by position.
Yesterday's DBP
(Draft Bug prices and points are to the right. TSN prices and points are shown for comparison.)

We've added 'live draft' format games to the schedule for tomorrow, including an NHL live draft freeroll.

In addition to the $4 worth of player 'points' that we're still giving new accounts, tomorrow there are a pair of $1 freeroll tournaments for anyone who wants to try out Draftbug. Just follow one of the links on the front page of Rotoguru.

$100 Baseball Freeroll is open for registration to the first 200 entrants. I assume Guru will post something about it, but figured I'd get the jump on him here.
