0 Subject: RIHC 2008-09: Final Recap

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Apr 16, 2009, 12:19

This thread is for a general retrospective on the 2008-09 RIHC season. RIHC managers are encouraged, but not required, to post. Others are also invited to share their observations.

You may comment on any aspect of the season, including or excluding those listed below.

For League Managers:
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

For participants in one of the Qualifying Leagues:
5. How did your league experience compare to that observed for the RIHC?

6. I'd appreciate if someone from each QL would post the final standings of that league in this thread. (Please indicate who the managers were as well, if team names aren't self-identifying.) That will help me get organized for next fall. In addition, I'd like to hear from any QL commish (via email, preferably) if there were any behavioral issues which should be considered in evaluating next year's invitees for the RIHC and the AAA league(s). Beligerent behavior, or sustained non-participation are particular areas of concern.

For League Managers:

Expected to win, so disappointed by 3rd. Disappointed Species passed me on the last day for 2nd. NOT disappointed to finish ahead of so many great managers, and by only fractions of points!

Best decisions were FA pickups Delonte West and Jason Thompson. Before West's injury, he was a beast. Not a whole lot of bad decisions or things I'd change, although I had some under-performers. My injuries were mostly to rebounders and I fell way behind in that category. Could maybe have traded assists for rebounds but before I realized it, it was kinda late. Plus, trading is so tough in this league, and the offers made didn't pan out.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

My yearly plea for more trades. Only 4 deals this season, and low level ones at that in 3 of the 4. So, a mandatory trading rule once again has been proposed so it can be shot down (lol). Otherwise, the rules are great, including the IR spots.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

The draft is always the key in a league where trading is minimal. Tough to dig out from poor early round selections. Injuries to early round selections make it that much harder as well.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

Absolutely essential. Happy with my draft, but had several players that under-performed prior year(s) and/or were injured too often to help like I had hoped. Udrih, Chandler, Gooden, Ilgauskas, all fit into that. I always felt there were good FAs available and was lucky to get West and Thompson.

Offered about everybody on my team in trades at one time or another including Kobe, but nothing could be done, even after getting close a few times. The back and forth is still enjoyable regardless.

For League Managers:

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I'm very, very disappointed with my final position and probably relegation to AAA. I thought i had an excellent draft at the time, but things just did not pan out the way i hoped. I had a strong 1st half, and was in touch with Florian and Knicksfan at the top, before i was hit by one of the worst stretches of injuries i've ever experienced as a fantasy basketball manager. Losing Amare and Bogut in quick succession effectively ruined my chances in the FG% and rebounding cats, and ultimately, any chance i had to win. On top of that, i had to deal with significant injuries to other studs in my team, such as Danny Granger and Devin Harris. The final nail in my coffin was the subpar season of my 3rd round pick Rudy Gay, and the misguided selection of Gilbert Arenas in round 10, who provided me with 2 whole games worth of stats.

If i had to do my draft over, i'd have had the balls to select Dwyane Wade at #4. Stoudemire performed more like a late 1st rounder than a top 5 pick before striking out through injury, whereas ironically, my injury concerns for Wade were unfounded, and he arguably ended up the season as the #2 player in 8-cat roto (yes, even ahead of LeBron!) behind Chris Paul. More on CP3 later...

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

I thought the rules were fine. Even with a load of injuries, i managed to fill out my Games Played, and i thought the level of FA talent available was about right for most of the season.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

I have learned that RIHC gets tougher every season. I was horrified to see myself plummet from 1st to 11th within the space of a few weeks. Just goes to show how close things were. As i mentioned, the only thing i'd really change is to have had the guts to have gone for Wade. I think if i'd done that, my current synopsis would have been much rosier.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

It's really hard to trade in this league, so the draft is key to success. Nobody wants to give to get, or rather it is very difficult to get a "good deal" in any trade. As the injuries set in, i was able to patch things up to a certain extent, but obviously you can't completely replace Stoudemire, Bogut, Harris and Granger type stats from the waiver wire.

Having said that, i thought i did a good job on the trade and FA front. My only trade was to obtain Kevin Love for Rudy Fernandez, and that worked out as well as i could have hoped. I went for Love to augment my rebounding. At the time, i didn't think he'd have to carry it. Then, after Stat and Skippy went down, i found myself relying on Love and McDyess for my rebounding. Not good enough.

I plucked a fair amount of nice FAs overall - Gordon, McDyess and Stuckey all played nice roles for me, whilst Anthony Randolph was a beast for the last few weeks of the season. Overall though, i had too many holes in certain categories to compete overall.

Finally, i have to congratulate Florian again. He gave up an lot in Calderon and Rose to get Paul, but by god, it was worth it. Watching CP3 rip 7 or 8 steals out every 3rd night along with double digit assists nightly was a heartbreaker for the chasing pack. That trade alone meant he deserved to win the title, IMO. Fantastic job for anyone to win this league as comfortably as he just did.

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I wanted to win. Anybody entering the "majors" in Guru's RIBC/RIHB/RIFC games without the goal of winning is not only a pansy but shouldn't be allowed to play. So, not winning is a disappointment. Secondarily of course you do always want the best finish possible and to stay in the majors and not be relegated. Given the limitations of my team from Round 1 (taking Dwight Howard and tanking FT%) I did a reasonable job of maximizing the points I could obtain, save for points scored (see #3 below).

I do not regret the decision to take Dwight Howard in round 1. It made it FUN to adapt my draft strategy on the fly to leverage Howard's strengths and with my FT% almost assuredly last before the draft's 1st round was over, it allowed me to increase the value (relative to my team) of brick-laying free throw shooters.

....which led to me drafting Shaquille O'Neal in round 11, which turned out to be the absolute #1 reason why I finished 2nd. Shaq played an astonishing 75 games!! He put up 17.8 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.7 AST (not bad), 1.4 blocks and even 0.7 steals all while leading the NBA in FG%.

Honorable team MVP selections go out to Andre Miller (16.3PPG, 6.5AST, 4.5REB(!), 1.3STL and .473FG%) and Zach Randolph when healthy.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

No.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

I put myself in a huge hole early in scoring and threes and probably shouldn't have. I knew damn well Shawn Marion probably wasn't the best pick in round 2, but it just seemed like good value. He was okay with 12.9PPG, 8.5REB, 1.3STL and 1.0BLK but him combined with Jason Kidd's pedestrian scoring had me scrambling in the draft and taking less rounded scorers in later rounds than I would have preferred.

So while I screwed up scoring and threes, I was successful in maximizing most of the other categories. Florian and I were the only teams to have 4 categories with double-digit scores. I HAD to dominate in FG%, REB, BLK and STL to have a chance, and my well-rounded non-scorers helped accomplish that.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

The draft pretty much makes or breaks you. A couple unlucky injuries (Eurogollum) to early round picks and you are sunk. My strength in these drafts is typically plucking good value that falls to far, as well as the ability to change on the fly. I rarely enter any draft with a concrete plan of "I will take a PG in round 1 and a PF in round 2" or "I will concentrate on middle infielders in the early rounds". Usually I let the draft come to me and use my personal spider sense to snatch good value and adjust my team accordingly.

Trades are extremely difficult although good waiver wire management is absolutely essential to pick up a missing piece or two that can help you. On my team Chris Andersen of the Nuggets was a shotblocking maniac since I picked him up - he averaged 2.5 blocks for the year but he must have averaged 3 since I picked him up. Nick Collison was a good role player to make up missed games and offered good REB with almost a block and steal per game.

This was probably the most enjoyable RIBC/RIHC league I've been in. Every category was contested. Every point - hell every half point - was critical to the final standings. One bad week could send you to 8th place in a heartbeat. Nobody gave up and nearly everyone got their allotment of GP's in. It was a great year and I can't wait for next year.

.......I was remiss in not thanking round 14 and 15 picks Steve Blake (who was incredible with 3's and steals before getting hurt) and Mario Chalmers who both were big time steals at the tail end of the draft.

Here's hoping you "will concentrate on middle infielders in the early rounds" of next year's RIHC draft. I think it would be extremely wise.

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I did poorly relative to my expectations. I'm happy to finish tied for third, but was very lucky to do so. I stunk it up in points scored all season despite making every effort to fix it. I should have just punted early on and worked from there. I think I had a great draft and then screwed myself by dropping guys shortly before they became good starters (Conley, Sessions, Noah to some extent). I think if I had hung tight with my original draft class I could have made a good run of it. Instead, I found myself short on guards and falling behind in various categories and felt forced to deal Paul for two good guards (Rose and Calderon). A bad chain reaction. Sometimes moves save you, sometimes they kill you. But, I'd rather make an error by cutting or trading a guy as opposed to making an error by sitting on my thumbs and waiting for something to happen. That's the way I play, I guess. I also dealt Gasol for V.Carter and Love for Fernandez. The Gasol deal was OK but the Love deal stunk. Fernandez was hurt or stunk for me over half the time I had him, while Love just kept getting better.

My best decision this season, outside of good draft picks, was grabbing K.Perkins as an FA. Very few of my other FA pickups were usable long-term. I really felt like my hands were tied. The FA list was like a desert. I watched it as best I could all year and just just couldn't find much value there. In RIBC I find the draft to be much more forgiving, as you can fix a lot of things with FA's if you give it a little effort, but in RIHC you just flat out need to have a great draft (and then not trade or cut those guys!). You also obviously need to avoid major injuries. I didn't have any MAJOR injuries, but I did have more than my fair share of IDP's and DNP's.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

Nope. Never gave it a thought.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

I have even more respect for the value of the draft. I've learned (again) that if you draft young up-and-coming players that you really believe to be good/great, then you need to have the balls to stick with them the first couple of months, otherwise, don't draft them in the first place.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

I guess I covered this already.

1.01 Chris Paul PG NOR holt
2.12 Marcus Camby C LAC holt
3.01 Pau Gasol C LAL holt
4.12 Lamar Odom SF LAL holt
5.01 Rasheed Wallace PF DET holt
6.12 Ray Allen SG BOS holt
7.01 Jason Terry SG DAL holt
8.12 Troy Murphy PF IND holt
9.01 Thaddeus Young SF PHI holt
10.12 Mike Conley PG MEM holt
11.01 Joakim Noah C CHI holt
12.12 Kevin Love C MIN holt
13.01 Ramon Sessions PG MIL holt
14.12 Hakim Warrick SF MEM holt
15.01 Jerryd Bayless PG POR holt

Pretty good except for Bayless. If I hadn't made a single transaction all season I may have been better off. That makes me feel bad.

Great league guys. Congrats again to F'in Florian, thanks to Guru as always. Good luck to all of you guys going to AAA next season! :D

I obviously did worse than expected (when I drafted my team).
My 2 first round picks quickly went down(i.e. Brand/Baron), my 5th round pick(Dalembert) fooled me the whole season, when I played him he sucked, the few times I sat him , he had a pretty huge game.... and he tricked me in over and over again.

The guys that kept me alive (hardly) were definitely Durant and Lee.
But then Durant went down too...
Also have no complaints at all about Westbrook, who certainly did outstanding for a rookie. I'll forgive him the poor FG%.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

Nope.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

Less over-analyzing seems a good plan.
Not completely neglect the Blocking department, is maybe also something I could try next year.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

Think I have most of it covered in 1.
I thought to have drafted a pretty decent team, but if you can't count on 3 of your first 5 picks, it gets tough to have any success.
My lower picks actually did pretty decent for me.
The importance of a good draft is amazing, especially with this kind of competition around.
The waiver pool is horrible.
And it is a vicious circle, the more the season developped, the more risks I took, to turn it around. Picking up guys like Larry Hughes for instance, that was not pretty at times.

I got many offers, but never really liked any. They seemed always to be constructed around Durant/Lee. I almost traded Durant for Granger, but good I didn't Granger went down right after that, so I felt good about keeping Durant. Then he went down... of course.
Not my year.

For League Managers:

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I hoped to win. I didn't expect to win by such a large margin.
My best decisions were trading up to draft Nate Robinson, drafting Carter (4th round), Mayo (9th round), Rose (10th round), and Delonte West (15th round), picking up Brook Lopez off waivers and trading for Chris Paul. Paradoxically trading for Paul was only possible because I already had a huge lead in assists. Of these the most important move was picking up Lopez off waivers. He cost me nothing, but made huge contributions to my team in blocks, rebounds and FG%.
My worst decisions were drafting Boozer (3rd round), Beasley (6th round), Deng (7th round), trading down in the second round of the draft instead of taking Granger and dropping multiple useful players (most importantly Delonte West).

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

No. The rules are great as they are. I'm surprised that there were only 6 trades all year (2 during the draft and 4 during the regular season) and that I was involved with 5 of them.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

I'll try to be more patient with my team next year and not make quite as many waiver wire moves.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

The draft was important to set up my team, but fortunately I was able to improve my team significantly due to both waiver wire pickups and trades during the course of the year.

I am very disappointed to end out of the top 4. I really wanted to come back next season. Of course I wanted to win but once Florian extended his lead I tried my best to hang on to a top 4 spot. My worst decisions were saving my guard games and then having to use a bunch of scrubs late in the season to catch up. Also, I mismanaged my games played at the end.

Best decision was having a pretty good draft.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

It was fine.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

Would have used up my games more evenly across the season so I didn't have to scramble at the end.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

1. (5) Dwyane Wade PG,SG
2. (20) Tim Duncan PF,C
3. (29) Rashard Lewis SF,PF
4. (44) Stephen Jackson SG,SF
5. (53) Gerald Wallace SF,PF
6. (68) Greg Oden C
7. (77) Brad Miller C
8. (92) Tracy McGrady SG,SF
9. (101) Jameer Nelson PG
10. (116) Tyrus Thomas SF,PF
11. (125) Boris Diaw SF,PF,C
12. (140) Earl Watson PG
13. (149) Bobby Simmons SG,SF
14. (164) Brook Lopez PF,C
15. (173) Marquis Daniels SG,SF

The draft was very good to me, starting with the selection of Dwyane Wade. My mid-round selections didn't pan out so well because of injuries (McGrady, Oden, Jameer Nelson), but the late round guys were good finds (Tyrus Thomas, Boris Diaw, Brook Lopez, Marquis Daniels). Of course I made a stupid move and released Brook Lopez early in the season.

I scoured the FA list almost every day because I knew I had to be quick to get the players I wanted. Overall I think I did a pretty good job of mixing and matching to fill my needs, and had the second most transactions at 44. Florian was just a little too quick (especially when he picked up Beno Udrih).

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I bombed big time this year. I've always felt late round drafting and free agent pickups was my strong point and I vowed to get safe low risk picks for the first few rounds.
My best picks were Jamison for the second year in a row and late round pickups Nene, Scola and Hill.
Needless to say AI was a total bust. I took AI hoping that his past consistency at playing injured would continue. I also drafted bigs with the idea that his FT% and large amount taken would pull up the rest of the team. I would have been better off taking D. Howard since I was at the bottom anyway.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

No.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

Same tactical error. Weak early choices.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

The draft broke me this year. AI Josh Howard and Randy Foye all sounded so good on paper.
I was able to climb back up in mid season but faltered down the stretch.
I think trades are of little or no value with managers of this caliber and most trades are a wash. Which is why I usually avoid them. Although I really regret not moving Josh Howard when he started hot and I had several requests.

I've found having a couple of flyers in the draft comes in handy during the first month when the top free agent players usually emerge. This year I only had a few pickups I could make.
