0 Subject: RIHC 2009-10: Draft Rationales

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Oct 15, 2009, 23:16

This thread will be for managers in the RotoGuru Invitational Hoops Challenge to provide the rationale for each pick.

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

Please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make your pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If possible, please draft your rationale at the time your are making that pick. Not only does that allow you to remember your thoughts "in the moment", but it also makes it simple to copy and paste it when it is due, avoiding unnecessary delays and/or placeholders.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale. Simply post something like "2.10 placeholder for Guru". This makes it easy for me (or any moderator) to splice the eventual rationale in the proper place.

3. If you are providing rationales after a placeholder has been inserted, then post it in the draft discussion thread, and someone will copy it over.

4. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

The general format should be:
1.01 Chris Paul, PG, NO
Several sentences of rationale.

In addition, along with your first player rationale, please comment on your rationale for your selection of draft order.

Garcia offers help in all areas, more than one blocked shot and more than a steal game, 14 points per game. I hoping his assists per game will improve.

11.08 Kendrick Perkins C BOS
Perkins gets rebounds and blocks shots. There were not many guys left that did both of those things well. The frontcourt in Boston is more crowded this year than last, but Perkins seems to have carved a role for himself on the team and I don’t expect his production to drop off substantially. Sadly, this also means there is little hope, barring injury to other players, of any substantial growth in his numbers, which for a young player is unfortunate.

11.09 Grant Hill SF PHO
Grant Hill was surprisingly ranked 40th overall in the Yahoo game last year. He doesn't do anything particularly well, but gets 12-14 ppg, 5 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal, .5 blocks and the occasional 3PTM while shooting 50% from the floor. I expect he'll manage to replicate that performance in the uptempo Phoenix offense. I don't think he manage to replicate playing 82 games again, but over the last three years he has managed to average 72 games/year. If he manages to play 65+ games this year I'll be happy.

I considered picking up Iverson (but already had 8 guard eligible players on my team), considered Odom and Kenyon Martin for their combination of steals and rebounds and considered Love, Haslem and McDyess as I still needed a center.

11.10 Anthony Morrow SF GSW
The next two rounds my targeted players were A. Morrow, B. Jennings, J. Harden, C. Brewer and D. Gallinari.

Because I was still in trouble in 3's, I decided on Morrow. His preaseason games were fantastic: big numbers of points and threes, with an amazing FG%. Yes, I know he is not a starter, but it's enough for me from the backup stage too.

11.11 Kirk Hinrich, PG, Chi
Surprised to see Hinrich still available. I know he’s relegated to a backup role, but still expect him to get enough minutes to be of decent value, possibly even top-100 value. Hoping for something like 11 pts, 4 assists, 2.5 rebs, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 treys.

Not a sexy pick, but a good value at pick 131 – and he complements my needs nicely.

12.02 Rasheed Wallace, C, Bos
I was looking for someone to help boost my 3-point shooting. My short list was Wallace, Nocioni, and Battier. I decided to go with Sheed, in spite of his age and new situation in Boston. It’s hard to imagine that he’s dropped all the way to round 12. I’m thinking that he’s got enough in the tank to pay the 12th round freight.

Just keep playin’ hard, my man…

12.03 Brandon Jennings, PG, Mil
Jennings is the third PG option of my team behind Miller and Evans. I needed one more PG, Jennings or Curry seemed the last real valuable possibility for this position. I have already had two players from GSW, so I drafted Jennings.

I guess he will be the starter in Milwaukee, and I am sure he will be get at least 30 minutes per game. And it is enough to be productive enough. I am waiting from him a lot of assists, steals, and I hope he will throw above 1.0 threes per game.

12.04 Lamar Odom, PF, LAL
I still needed a center at this point, but I really wasn't thrilled with options at this point (Haslem, McDyess, etc.) I was going to draft Love and knew he was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, but couldn't find any information on how the surgery had gone (and it was Wednesday night). That really made me wonder if something had gone wrong with the surgery and he was going to be out longer than 6-8 weeks. So I went with Odom. As it turned out Love's surgery had just been delayed until Thursday.

Odom is now coming off the bench and he only managed to average 9.5 ppg, 6.5 boards, 2.4 assists and 1 steal and 1 block while coming off the bench last year. Even if he averages those numbers he is a worth a 12th round pick. However he is backing up Gasol, who has missed an average of 14 games/year in the last 5 years and the apparently brittle Bynum, who has missed at least 30 games/year over the last two years. Since he averaged 14ppg and 11 rebounds/game as a starter last year his averages for the year should at least be 11 ppg, 7.5 rebounds/game, 2.5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

12.05 James Harden, SG, OKC
Iverson is still available here? I passed on him in round 10 and felt I needed to go big in round 11. I’m a little embarrassed that I almost jumped the gun on Iverson before when obviously no one else thinks he is worth that high of a pick. After taking Stuckey over Iverson and assuming Iverson would go, I started looking at other guards I expected to be available and became enamored with James Harden’s potential. Harden is a physical combo guard and while it is unclear whether he will start right away, I expect that he will end up teaming with Westbrook to make up a pretty versatile backcourt. It seems Harden has the potential to do a little bit of everything except for blocks. How much of everything he does will boil down to playing time. Even with that lingering question, I choose youth again over Iverson.

CDR. Not someone I thought I’d pick when I woke up this morning. He had another decent game tonight and looks like the starting SF. He currently has PG,SG. Since I only have two PG eligibles CDR’s yahoo versatility will come in handy assuming he ends up being worth keeping. Just keep doing what you are doing now and I’ll be happy. Now I have two NJN players with questions about how involved they will be. Am I betting against myself. As I write this JianLian is still available – what if I take him in the 13th?? Is that stupid. Probably but somebody else has to play on that team besides Harris and Lopez.
Tayshaun prince came so close to being on my team. And was taken next. This talk of diminished role and three guard system scared me off.

Prince is very consistent. He has averaged 13–15 points, 4–6 rebounds, and 2–4 assists while playing all 82 games in each of the last five seasons. He’s a starter, and contributes across all categories. These facts all mean that he’s a solid round 12 pick.

I wanted Rasheed Wallace here for his blocks and threes. But once Guru took him, I strongly considered Carl Landry, Azubuike, Parker and Brandon Rush. I needed threes and Nocioni was one the most rounded players with guaranteed playing time, now that Garcia is out, that were left on the board.

Lots of intriguing talent still available. Decided on Maggette, who appears in line for big minutes in an up-tempo environment. Always one of the better FT shooters, he hopefully can maintain a decent FG%, and scores points the moment he steps on the court. May not get as many steals as he did when he was younger, but helps there too, and a little in the rebound department.

As with my previous 2 picks, I was looking to boost assists and 3's, and hopefully points scored. late rd 12 seems like a good time to take a shot on a rookie starting PG. hopefully he gets his shot straightened out so he keeps his job and doesn't kill my fg %.

13.02 Allen Iverson, PG/SG, Mem

Who would have thought Iverson would last until the 146th pick in the draft? Then again, who would have thought he’d be walking down Beale Street? I’m taking him for what I know he will do, which is score, get some steals, and get a few assists. There are some people predicting Memphis to be the surprise team in the league this year based on their combination of youth and experienced free agent pick ups. I like the value of this pick, and the potential it carries, this late in the draft. Big upside and little risk.

He made the top 75 in Yahoo last year, but with the new faces in GS, his minutes might be very limited. That was my rationale for not picking him earlier and the reason why he dropped this far. He's the poster boy for per minute production as his averages/ minute were consistent in his 3 years in the league.

I almost drafted Carl Landry with his .575 FG%. But at the last minute I read somewhere that Nellie trusts him ensuring him of minutes. I am looking for 100 3's, points in the teens and 5 rebounds/g.

13.03 Mike Dunleavy Jr, SF, IND

I know his knee is shot, but in the 13th round to get a guy who put up a 19PPG, 5.2RPG, 3.5AST, 1 STL, 2 THREES a game with 47/83 FG/FT percentages in 2007 was worth a shot. Taking a risk like this limits my early season flexibility - and I will run behind in GP's compared to the Mike D speedboat strategy - but the payoff on the other end of this in mid-December-ish could be huge.

It’s getting thin. When I made the pick before this one I had 8 guys in my queue. all of them were gone here. So I’m scrambling again. the starters that are left are not exciting to say the least. Good 6th men will probably do better then a lot of them at this point. Landry fits that idea I think. with the thin front court in Houston he should get a chance to shine and he has done well in preseason.

Gomes was a viable option last year to plug in here and there. Now with the injury to Kevin Love, he stands to see some good minutes this year as well and maybe an increase in rebounds. He knocks down some 3’s, which is a team need for me at this point.

13.09 Udonis Haslem C MIA
I still only had one center, so I really needed a second. Haslem was the best of a fairly similar bunch. He seems to have the least competition for playing time as Miami seems to want to make Beasley a SF and O'Neal will likely miss his usual 15-30 games, allowing Haslem to play as a center as well. He should average 10 ppg and 8 rebounds on 50% shooting.

I considered McDyess, but really think Popovich will limit his minutes in the regular season to keep him fresh for the playoffs. Popovich may even replace him with the rebounding machine that is DeJuan Blair for most of the regular season.

13.10 Corey Brewer SG MIN
Brewer will be the starter SG in Minnesota. It is enough for me in the 13th round, but it is a lottery pick a bit, because of his different production from game to game. He has ability to fill the stats, but sometimes not much to look at.

Two years ago I drafted Brewer because of his production in the preseason. As far as I remember he threw 30 points in one of the games. And in the middle of the season I had to drop him. Now I think it's time to give him a chance again. One more reason to try him - Love's absence in the first month.

Should get an ample uptick in playing time while Dunleavy recovers, giving him a chance to show why that should continue if/when Dunleavy returns to full strength. Because Jamison will miss around 10-15 games, Andray Blatche will get off to a solid start this season while filling in (Oberto is not a real competitor for him). I think he will get enough minutes later too to be a strong fantasy player.

Blatche is very good in rebounds, and it will be an important factor for me, but he is good in assists, steals and blocks too.

I was considering him in the 11th round, so taking him in the 14th seemed to make sense. I personally really don't like Martin. Hmmm, I wonder how many games I will get out of him. 2007-8 season isn’t that long ago and a return to those numbers isn’t that hard. That would be well worth the 14th round. He may not start but I can still see him getting 30 min. Only 25mins might not do but we will see what happens. I’m doing pretty well in threes if he does work out.
I wonder if Gallinari will still be available at my 15th. He is going undrafted at this point in some A leagues but I was looking at him. Or varejao but I hope I can find someone with more potential. Honestly I was totally half-assing this back end of the draft. I had gone through the entire list of available players via Kafenatid and threw a bunch of players into my queue for picking later. Had I had my head out of my ass and taken the time to look, I would have taken preseason standouts/temporary injury replacements Mareese Speights, Brandon Bass or Andray Blatche instead.

Jack had a strong season for the Pacers last season and got a fat new deal from the Raptors. That should mean good playing time, both as a part-time off-guard alongside Jose Calderon and as a backup point guard as well. Good upside pick at this point in the draft.

The crowded frontcourt in Milwaukee just opened up a bit via injury. Warrick has been a pretty decent scorer throughout his career, he grabs some boards, and he gets to the line a lot, which is good and bad in that he shoots in the low 70s. Whether starting or off the bench, I expect Warrick to make an impact right away, and if he doesn’t, no risk since he’s my 15th round pick.

My roster is forward heavy. Only 4 guards and 2 of them are injury prone. What was I thinking? Jrue was a very good defensive player at UCLA which should earn him more floor time. But it has been difficult for him to adjust to the pace in the NBA and in hindsight, I might have throw this pick back in the pond. For now I’ll just keep him on the radar for next year.

So gallinari was gone and I tried hard to find someone other than varejao but in the end I kind of gave up. Sefolosha, derozan, krstic, mason jr and a few other starters and 6th men were looked at. No one looked to be significant but I’m sure there is a missed gem in there somewhere.

I forgot that Portland has Andre Miller and was wondering why Blake fell this far, he provided me with good production as a third PG.

A total shot in the dark. He is expected to start but likely will not be a fantasy contributor this season. Maybe he plays better than I expect.

He is a rebounding monster. He's averaging 14 ppg and 8 rebounds per game in the preseason, while playing a mere 18 minutes per game. He should be able to find at least that many minutes in the regular season, especially since he's got McDyess ahead of him and SA will want to rest McDyess for the playoffs. And Duncan will get some games off as well. The question is whether he can possibly continue to put up anyone resembling that kind of production in the regular season.

f Wright will get enough playing time as a starter, he can help me in rebounds.

This round I targeted to pick up Speights or Blair, but Species and Florian wanted them erlier.

My second Rash Lewis fill-in. I start out using them both while Rash is suspended, and then see who merits enough playing time thereafter.

I am still lacking in blocks and assists and I decided to pick Hasheem for his blocks. I hope he can get enough minutes in order to produce decent fantasy stats.
