Now that the RIHC draft has finished, I invite each of the participants to share any reactions that they have. Feel free to say as much or as little as you wish. As a guide, you might consider the following questions:

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
2) What surprised you?
3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Outsiders who were not participating in the draft are also welcome to share their general reactions.

my stratigy going in was dictated by my middle draft point. i choose to go down to 6th from a possible 5th with the idea i was happy to pass on granger. i didn't see much possiblity of him out playing that spot and there were injury concerns. sixth was the farthest i could go and assure myself of my pick of dirk amare or koby. it was also a nice spot to be on the way back. i figured one of the elite PG would make it to me. so i elected to take a C, amare and then calderon was left in the second. after that i tried to keep it to best available at regular intervals.

i've done enough drafts now to know the patterns and this one was not much different on the whole. C and PG were the tougher spots to fill with a little reaching here and there.
my own C reach in the 6th which now looks worse with the news Hawes may not start.

i'm starting to think courtney lee,10th and/or chris douglas-roberts,12th is going to end up being my best pick. i'm hopeing one of them gets a big role on that team.

i had made an 8 man list with my 12th pick to try help decide and making a wish list for the next round. i picked CDR without regret but then sat in dismay as one by one that whole list diappeared. prince, yi, maggette, battier, AI, azubuike, thornton. i bet those picks from 12.07 to 13.05 do better as a group than some of the same size groups just above. anyway i didn't make any lists after that.

guru surprized me with his 2.02 pick of rondo but i understood it after i rerated subtracting FT%.

as far as trading teams goes i don't think anybody got away with too much in an educated, hi Hoops IQ crowd. i do like MikeD's team though. alot of capable/safe guys there. could take a chance with xpdurminds team,he's got a few upside/sleeper picks that if they all go right..

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Best player available combined with an eye toward rarer categories. Holt had already taken the #1 pick. I’m not usually a fan of picking this close to an end of a round. In looking at things, I didn’t like the possible mid-round choices this year. I see a lot of questions surrounding most of them.

With the #2 pick I figured I’d take either Paul or James, after holt made his decision. I was fine either one. Really didn’t consider anyone else. I tried projecting who might be available at later picks, but that's pretty tough when picking near an end.

2) What surprised you?

NO TRADES were made. Wow.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It never really did. But, I didn't expect to take so many veteran players. Never thought I'd get Kidd and Duncan. Camby. And even Iverson.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Nothing I can think of.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

No idea on who the best pick might be. Maybe a late rounder like Iverson.

Worst? Not sure yet. Nothing jumps out as a real reach.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Odom in the 12th round by Florian. Gay at 5.11 seemed like excellent value.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Anthony Randolph. Francisco Garcia.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Definitely Guru's team. Lotsa good players. You can do that when punting a category! Plus he did a nice job with it, and has a real chance to win in spite of the punt. Which will be fun to watch.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

It took me a few years to adjust to slow drafting because I tend to loose focus. And since I didn’t play any fantasy basketball last year, it was difficult to recall what worked. One year I tried the PG/PF strategy that Funston (I think) advocated on nba.com. That didn’t work so well for me. The last year I played, I decided to just enjoy the draft and not to stress about it. That seemed to work way better. I had to remind myself of that on numerous times through this draft. That is why I think I ended up with a bipolar roster.

2) What surprised you?

Iverson falling to the 13th round and Odom to the 12th.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

After incorrectly ranking my 3rd round queue (I think Carter is going to have a monster year), I had to deal with the high risk that Arenas brings to the roster. I planned (passing on Bynum in the 5th for example) so if Arenas does go down , I might have an outside chance to finish in the middle of the pack . Of course I lost focus a few times by drafting Deng (coming off an injury plagued season) and Augustin a little early.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

I would have taken Carter in the 3rd, Frye in the 11th and Iverson in the 12th.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Worst pick: An injured Arenas in the 3rd. Best pick: A healthy Arenas in the 3rd.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Each manager made a few great value picks that will outperform their draft position.: Noah and Griffin for Holt. Bargnani, Ford and Iverson for Mike D. Bynum and Salmons for Tosh. Oden and Flynn for Species, Hawes. Frye and Landry for Wonderboy. Parker and Gooden for tekeballer. Ellis, Young and Miller for Upton Bombers. Carter( he’ll be a 1st round producer this year),Frye and Odom for Florian. Morrow, Hibbert and Jennings for Jasonprof. Gay, Hinrich and Rush for Guru. And Alston and Thabeet for Haverad.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

No major surprises

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Both Guru’s and Mike D’s teams look great to me. Florian has a chance to win it again if he makes a trade for a big at the right time.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

To draft the best possible players in the early rounds and fill in positional needs later. It went much as expected.

2) What surprised you?

How often I would consider drafting someone early in an even round and still have them available at the end of the next round 18 picks later. I drafted Ginobili, Terry, Odom, and Kenyon Martin after considering drafting with a draft choice at least 18 picks prior to when I picked them. At times I felt like I must have my rankings wrong as most people weren't valuing players the same way I was. And there was a trade between Tosh and Species.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It became obvious near the middle of the draft that my team was going to be very weak in blocks, so I decreased the value of blocks for further draft picks and tried to focus on the other categories. My team should be extremely strong in 3PTM, assists, FT% and points, strong in FG% and steals, average in rebounds and will likely end up last in blocks. I'll likely have to make a trade for a strong rebounder during the year.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

I'm pretty happy with how the draft went right now. I'm sure that will change once the season starts.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Odom in the 12th round was probably my best pick. We'll see who turns out to be a bad pick once the season starts.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Curry by Holt. Iverson, Camby by Mike D. Evans by Jasonprof. Salmons by Species. JR Smith by Tosh. Brewer, Shaq, Hinrich, Wallace bu Guru.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

none

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Mike D and Guru's teams both look very strong.

Addendum:

Since Haslem is now suddenly coming off the bench, I regret drafting Haslem. Anyone interested in trading me a second center?

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

I usually start with the best player available, and do that for 4-5 rounds before specifically targeting particular categories or positions......with the exception of getting a pretty good point guard. Further, leveraging lessons from various Invitationals (in both hoops and baseball), I wanted a greater focus on youth and upside vs. my frequent strategy (especially in hoops) of taking older veteran talent.

It went as planned, as a cursory glance at my roster doesn't yield more than 2 or 3 players 30 or older.

2) What surprised you?

Not as many great steals as years past. It didn't seem as if that many players really fell, which did not play as well into my vulture-like tendencies. It seemed as if most picks were going according to most projections/cheat sheets.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

The approach didn't really change....it just morphed into it's intended design anyway. Through round 7 I had 7 well-rounded players who do a lot of things well. After that I focused upon positional and categorical needs for the remainder of the draft.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Keep better track of the draft with draft software, or just by taking projections and figuring out which categories I was strong and weak in. For example, I had no idea I was so weak in FG%, and it was too late once I was told that bit of information. I was vacationing in SoCal and just did not have the time to put into it. Plus I was hammered most nights.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Best? Not sure.....and that what makes me nervous. Usually I am thrilled that I got so-and-so in round 4, this dude in round 9.....but for the most part my picks were roughly near the average for the RIHC drafts, which IMO isn't a good sign.

If I am lucky one will emerge from the Jianlian/Dunleavy/Parker/McGrady mold.

Worst? The most likely candidate is Andrew Bynum. Obviously this seems crazy after his 26 point, 13 rebound explosion on Opening Night, but Gasol was out for that game. I'm concerned about his ability to stay healthy and the stacked Lakers lineup....although there is no doubt he can do quite well given time, health and opportunity.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Odom in the 12th round by Florian. Rasheed in the same round by Guru. Tyson Chandler at 11.12 by Harverad.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Definitely Anthony Randolph and Jameer Nelson.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Guru, easily. The FT-punt team is fun.

I'm curious, how is FT% calculated is it actual FT Made/FT Attempted or is the average of the players on the team? I'm assuming it is actual, but wanted clarification (granted different sites could do it differently)

If people are willing to divulge some of their methods, how many people calculate their FT and FG% by actual projected shots and how many just average all players equally?

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

I expected to draft Dirk or Amare with pick #8 and then draft a PG in round #2. That plan disappeared when Kobe was still available with my first round pick. So I thought about what big men would come back to me in the second round, but then decided to stick with the idea of PG in round #2. I was also targeting Brand for round 3. After that, I was trying to focus on young players with upside. I did alright in that regard, but as a result I have a few players at the end of my draft that I need to progess if I hope to do well. As many do, I have a rough idea of projected stats for my team and targets for those stats that I am trying to build my drafted players toward.

2) What surprised you?

Not much really. There are always players who go to early and too late, but nothing of the sort that stood out.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

The main thing was that I expected to have 2 big men and one guard after round 3. Instead, I had two guards and Elton Brand. That fact and Brand’s potential questions marks made me emphasize big men after round 4. I went 3 straight rounds (5-7) taking C eligible players.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Other than Mike Miller in round 9, I am not quite sure anything. Not because I have faith in my draft plan, but because it seems too early to want to blow the team apart. The only other thing that comes to mind is rolling the dice on Iverson. Looking back at round 12, I probably should have taken either Prince, Maggette, Iverson, or Yi rather than James Harden.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Best: I think Monta Ellis (4.05) will outperform his draft position. I like reading the box score and seeing how active he is. Late in the draft I like Rudy Fernandez’s potential in round 14.
Worst: Mike Miller (9.08) I noted it my rationale. This was a mistake, made in a rush and without full preparation. I was desperate for 3’s and reached too early for Miller.
Best or Worst?: Elton Brand (3.08) This could turn out the a major coup or an epic fail.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Iverson went way too late. I almost took him round 10. Michael Redd in round 8 was a great bargain. I would have surely taken him with my pick, just 3 spots later. I like Luol Deng in round 10.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Anthony Randolph has great potential but his playing time concerns made me think he went too early. Trevor Ariza seemed high.
Can I mention Mike Miller again? :)

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Mike D’s team looks pretty good. I like team Species as well.
