Nelson to Undergo Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

November 17, 2009

Orlando, FL – Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson will undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Nelson was injured in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game vs. Charlotte and underwent an MRI Tuesday morning.

It is estimated that Nelson will be out four-to-six weeks following the procedure.

Nelson had started all 11 games for the Magic, averaging 13.7 ppg. and a team-high 5.5 apg.

The Magic (8-3) return to action Wednesday night by hosting Oklahoma City at Amway Arena (tip-off 7 p.m.)

No definitive news on Evans:
Evans injured his hand Friday against Dallas. The rookie guard is averaging 18.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

Evans said he'd only "tweaked" his ankle and that his hand was merely sore. Tonight would be Evans' first NBA game in Memphis, where he starred for one season at the University of Memphis.

Westphal, however, won't allow Evans' desire to play get in the way of the picture.

"If the doctor suggests he not play, he's not playing," Westphal said. "If the doctor says it's up to the player and the way he feels, then it's up to the player. I never try to force my will on that kind of thing. There's always another day if a guy can't play."

Not an injury, but worth noting if you are checking lineups tonight:

Jim O'Brien will start veteran Jeff Foster in place of second-year player Roy Hibbert tonight against the Toronto Raptors in an attempt to improve the defense.

"We can't play Roy much unless they play Amir Johnson or (Rasho) Nesterovic," O'Brien said. "We'll start Jeff at center because we're quicker and able to guard their pick-and-rolls."

O'Brien didn't say whether the switch was permanent.

Lou Williams will not play on Wednesday due to a fractured jaw he suffered during Tuesday night's game.

This is obviously not good news for Williams' fantasy owners, though at this point it remains to be seen how much time he'll miss beyond Wednesday. No starter has been announced yet, but Williams owners may want to grab Jrue Holiday as insurance -- the rookie had 11 points and six rebounds in just 10 minutes of action on Tuesday.

Roy Hibbert, who came off the bench behind Jeff Foster on Tuesday, will start against the Clippers on Wednesday.

The Pacers' defense was atrocious in Tuesday's loss to the Raptors and it doesn't sound like O'Brien has plans to bring Hibbert off the bench many more times this season. Look for him to bounce back this week after a few tough games.

Pacers beat reporter Mike Wells reports that Danny Granger will not play on Wednesday due to a sprained left MCL.
Just when it looked like his heel was becoming less of a concern, now owners have to worry about a knee. For what it's worth, this is not the same knee that troubled Granger last season, so there's at least some hope that he won't be out for a prolonged period of time. Look for increased production from Dahntay Jones and possibly Tyler Hansbrough for as long as Granger remains out.
