0 Subject: RIHC 2009-10: Final Recap

Posted by: Guru

This thread is for a general retrospective on the 2009-10 RIHC season. RIHC managers are encouraged, but not required, to post. Others are also invited to share their observations.

You may comment on any aspect of the season, including or excluding those listed below.

For League Managers:
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

For participants in one of the Qualifying Leagues:
5. How did your league experience compare to that observed for the RIHC?

6. I'd appreciate if someone from each QL would post the final standings of that league in this thread. (Please indicate who the managers were as well, if team names aren't self-identifying.) That will help me get organized for next fall. In addition, I'd like to hear from any QL commish (via email, preferably) if there were any behavioral issues which should be considered in evaluating next year's invitees for the RIHC and the AAA league(s). Beligerent behavior, or sustained non-participation are particular areas of concern.

Anytime you win, you have met your expectations. I think my whole season comes down to my draft and the decisions made there. I had a deep draft, with a lot of guys contributing even if only solid numbers. Reversals---I gave up on a draft choice just a little early, though there was a reason. Jarrett Jack. But he was not getting much PT. That certainly changed!

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

Establish a minimum amount of Trades Made. (yearly plug, lol). Something like 3 trades made in the league for the entire season! Amazing. I love the Injury Spot or spots if there were 2, I already can't remember (age).

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

I tried to make some deals and came close, but ultimately I feel in this league most GMs play it close to the vest. Often any deals made are simple 1 for 1 category swaps. General tactic of strong draft and watch the waiver wire is left.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

As I said above, absolutely essential. I barely made any moves all season due to the good fortune of overall good player health especially compared to several other teams. I ended with 15 moves but many were toward the end of the season when I actually did suffer a lot of injuries. My lead was safe enough. Very lucky in that regard.

I stayed pretty true to my board. I drafted some old geezers and rallied the troops. LeBron was huge until he missed the last bunch of games. With good (luck) health, my team gave me enough to win it.

Florian made an insane run at the end. Kudos, and very well played, as usual.

I initially hoping to win, but a few weeks into the season it was obvious I'd made some major draft mistakes and would have to be lucky to make it back to the RIHC for the next year. As a result I was quite happy to finish second. I made a few good draft picks (David Lee in the 4th round), but also a lot of bad ones. The middle rounds of my draft were such a disaster that I ended up dropping my 6th (Turkoglu),8th (Barbosa),9th (Nate Robinson) and 10th (Duhon) round picks. I spent the rest of the season scouring the waiver wire to try to fill up my depleted roster. My worst decisions were picking Vince Carter over Gerald Wallace in the 3rd round and drafting Robinson instead of Tyreke Evans in the 9th round.

No

Hopefully not draft so many duds.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

My draft netted me a number of solid players, but left me with many holes. I was eventually able to compensate for my poor draft picks, but by then Mike D had a huge lead and there was no way anyone was going to catch him. Congratulations again to Mike D on a great season.

I found making trades really difficult this year. I made four trades last year and none this year. This was partially because my team lacked depth this year. Last year I had a really deep team and was able to give people at least equal value in trades (and often a bit more) in order to improve in the desired categories. This year with the lack of depth I didn't have that option.
