Subject: RIHC 2010-11: Draft Discussion
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Oct 14x, 2010, 17:20
I will activate the draft momentarily. The clock will not start until the earlier of the completion of round #1, or Saturday morning.
We will proceed with a 6 hour clock. The draft clock will continue through weekends. There will be a clock moratorium each night from 1am until 7am Eastern time. Picks can continue to be made during the moratorium period, but the clock will be paused. Those picking at the endpoints do not get a double clock. In addition, if anyone is already in arrears for a pick when their next pick is due, they do not necessarily get a second clock period. This will be subject to Commissioner discretion.
The draft is configured for only PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Many players will be eligible for multiple positions; just choose the position designation that seems most appropriate. This is only for the purposes of displaying the draft results, and has no bearing on your eventual usage options.
Our roster configuration will be as follows: PG, SG, G, G PF, SF, F, F C, C Util, Util 3 bench 2 DL
Yahoo position eligibility will be used throughout the season. You are advised to check the Yahoo league site prior to selecting any player to ensure that you know that player's position eligibility at the start of the season.
You do not need to draft a completely valid roster.
Following the draft, all undrafted players will be placed on waivers, and waiver priorities will start out in inverse draft order.
You may draft a player who is not currently listed at Yahoo. If you do so, you will be assigned a placeholder player at Yahoo until the drafted player is made available, at which time you must pick up that player as a free agent (without using a waiver priority). After the 15 rounds of the draft are completed, you can no longer claim an unlisted player.
This league will have a limit of 84 games per position. Since there are 2 slots for each of G, F, C, and U, those position slots will be subject to a combined limit of 168 games.
Here are my ground rules for selecting from a queue: If you have a queue and make it available, and it is your turn to pick, I will make your pick if I'm around - unless you have provided specific instructions via email or in this thread. Therefore, do not make (or leave) your queue available if you do not want it used. Note that I will be able to pick from your available queue whether you have designated me as a DP (“designated picker”) or not.
You can specify that only the top name on your queue is to be displayed, or that the entire queue is to be shown. If you make the entire queue visible, I'll certainly check for any emails that might provide additional instructions. You can also authorize a DP to make a selection "free-form" (i.e., typing in the name, rather than selecting from a preset list.) Presumably, you would elect this only if you provide specific instructions to your DP(s).
Regardless, be aware that your queue is not visible to me or to any other designated picker until it is your turn to pick.
Please refrain from mentioning any undrafted player in this thread. You can use this thread to alert others about your availability, to request volunteers to accept a queue, to raise questions about draft rules or mechanics, to solicit trade offers or announce trades, etc.
Based on recent drafts, it is reasonable to expect that we will complete approximately 24 picks (2 full rounds) per day. Do not assume that you'll have a day off. In fact, you should be prepared to make 2-3 picks per day.
After two rounds have been completed, I will start a separate thread for draft rationales. We will then try to keep the rationale thread on a 2 round delay.

I'm going to be at a swim meet from 8am-6pm Pacific both Saturday & Sunday. (20+ hours in a hot steamy pool with 42 kids is no vacation) I'm the coach.
I'll be doing my best to follow along on my phone, and using queues. But if I stall out for a couple hours ... I apologize in advance. Taking round one and two will be pretty easy. Beginning in Round 3, I need to start taking a look at numbers, and won't have any spreadsheets available poolside. But I'll work on it.
Send me your positive thoughts on Saturday morning when I have 24 8-10 year-olds, 6 in their first meet, and no other coaches there to help me. I can already feel my hair falling out and turning gray!

C'mon Tosh. Suck it up. We all know those kids can practically coach themselves. Lol
Pick 5 is up AND could change the complexion of the draft. Who better than the man with the skinny j to take that shot?

MikeD, considered a couple directions, but your pick at 4 made it easy for me. I had a 5a and a 5b selection and Dirk was my 5c. All 3 were so close it was going to be tough to decide! DWade was good to me last year, and I'm not worried about his hammy or a little drop in production.
Boy this is going to be fun as I am sure each odd round I can forget about the top two in my queue when you and Guru pick! Hoping I can stick it back to you in the even rounds!!

Heads up for Sunday-Wednesday:
I'll be away from home from Sunday morning through Wednesday afternoon. I will have web access, and will try to stay in touch with the draft as often as possible. But I am unlikely to be as quick at making queued picks during that time frame as I might usually be.
If you plan to rely on queues during the next 4 days, it would be a good idea to set up one or more DPs other than me.

Florian - You have just picked, but have not posted a rationale for round one. Is that forthcoming right away, or should I put a placeholder there for you?
I'm ready to pick and post.

Home and will catch up and pick soon.
** I know it is easier for Guru to handle the Rationale thread-fixing if the rationales are left in this thread like Toral did. Just a heads up.

** Rationales should be on a 2 round delay, and we are actually below that.
We have Draft Rationales through pick 3.08 but the draft is only at 5.06.
I guess it's a good problem considering the alternative......

I am out for today. will fly to Verona. should be back online tomorrow morning (3:30am ET).
I have set a queue that will last through my 7th and 8th round pick. just pick the top pick, no matter which position it is.

I'm sorry that it has been taking me so long to make my last few picks. Real life has gotten in the way. I'll get to the draft rationales as soon as I can.

I'll be away for the better part of the next 4 hours, so I am leaving a queue, with Valkyrie and Mike D as DPs.
Our overall pace is disappointing. Based on historical norms, we should be completing round 10 by now, rather than round 8. I'm hoping that we can pick it up - as our current pace just barely gets us finished before the season starts.

I'm back at RotoGuru World Headquarters again (aka home), and should be able to stay on top of things, make queued picks, and keep the rationale thread up to date.
Thanks to Mike D (I assume it was Mike D) who helped to keep the rationale thread organized and updated while I was away.

Goldcoach - He had an update since the first one. Yesterday's message said "rounds 7 & 8".
I read today's message (24 hours later) as good to go.
But I could certainly be wrong.

Mike you need to designate someone to pick for you off a queued list- Guru is out he is the only one who can pick w/o a list. Looks like we wait until you time out and then UI don't know who you will get if you don't have a queue list.

Guru - Are we going to be able to replace our injured players immediately (via waiver claim) ... or wait the 10 days as if we signed a injured player off the FA list?

85 | Guru

Drafted injured players can be replaced immediately.

We'll certainly finish up on Sunday. I won't be around much on Sunday, so I probably won't get the draft all input into Yahoo until Sunday night, at which point all undrafted players will go on waivers, with priorities in reverse order of the draft.
I'll post when that's all set up.

Because the draft was completed overnight, I was able to finish loading the draft results into Yahoo this morning, so I have activated the league.
Check your roster to make sure it is accurate, and set your lineup for Tuesday.
All undrafted players are on waivers, which will process on Tuesday.
Continue to complete posting your rationales here.
