This thread is for a general retrospective on the 2010-11 RIHC season. RIHC managers are encouraged, but not required, to post. Others are also invited to share their observations.
You may comment on any aspect of the season, including or excluding those listed below.
For League Managers:
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?
2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?
3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?
4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
For participants in one of the Qualifying Leagues:
5. How did your league experience compare to that observed for the RIHC?
6. I'd appreciate if someone from each QL would post the final standings of that league in this thread. (Please indicate who the managers were as well, if team names aren't self-identifying.) That will help me get organized for next fall. In addition, I'd like to hear from any QL commish (via email, preferably) if there were any behavioral issues which should be considered in evaluating next year's invitees for the RIHC and the AAA league(s). Belligerent behavior, or sustained non-participation are particular areas of concern. |

This season was an experiment in the art of disguise. Could I get through an entire season among the creme de la creme without making it glaringly obvious that I am not a basketball fan, know little about the sport, and, during the previous (2009-2010) season, watched no basketball at all, except for a few minutes when there was a Raptors game on in the background when I was doing something else?
Those of you with great memories may recall that back in 2007 I undertook an experiment to see how I could do in a coupla basketball league using the RIHC draft order as a cheatsheet. It went OK; I finished around the middle of the leagues.
Last year, seeing there were some spots open in AA, I signed up and decided to take a stab at a higher level. You can guess what happened. Drew a high draft choice, drafted Lebron, was close to the top all year, the season-long leader had some personal stuff late and was paying less attention late for a few weeks, and I won the league outright.
So I've been a football fan since Hank Stram won a Super Bowl and never have got near the RIFC; I knew the rules of baseball at age 11 better than anyone except Gene Mauch and only barely snuck into the RIBC once, as a last replacement, and only managed to stay there for two years; yet first crack at the box I'm competing with the best on the board in a sport I have never followed seriously. I considered turning down the invite -- but it would be a challenge, and there was always in mind the possibility of pulling off what I was ready to declare, if I won, as the biggest upset in the history of sports.
I have actually forgotten what sources I used for my draft, except for one fantasy magazine which was the only hoops fantasy magazine on sale in Canada at that time, making my choice easy. I did not have access to either Rotowire or Rotoworld projections. I must have got some free rankings from somewhere as I’m too neurotic to draft without them. My bookmarks suggest I may have used the CBS Draft Guide and the Fantasy Basketball Café rankings. As to results: the only pick of mine that was identified as a reach in the Draft Recap was Bargnani at 3.07, and his RIBC consolidated average was 3.09 so I wasn’t distressed at that. So far the disguise was working.
The difficult part of the task for someone in my position is not the draft, but in-season pickups. I wasn’t going to beat out people who were picking up guys at half-time of games, since I wasn’t following or watching them (although I did watch a few games on the Internet and enjoyed them. It’s neat the way they make them bounce the ball when they are moving with it ;). But you need to be competitive at least at a second-tier level in pickups to do well. I followed Rotoworld as closely as I could; I was going there for football or hockey anyway. (I remember often waiting with annoyance for their Waiver Wired feature, usually late, to show up) Looking at my team log, I had a lot of decent pickup names there (Jordan, Gortat (traded), Barboso, Greene, Fields, Harden, Young) but it seemed I often had them at the wrong time or got too them too early. In the last part of the year I didn’t worry as I could be sure that if there was a great pickup Florian had him already. I think I got a passing grade in this area.
I was determined also not to stand out as the only guy who wouldn’t trade. I was at great danger, of course, of getting fleeced in any trade I would make. Just about every trade offer I got, I would look at the players offered on Rotoworld and they would be saying “good time to sell high” and/or the players I was asked for would be tagged “good time to sell low”. I sat down in February to try to identify the type of players I should be looking for to move up and those I should be willing to give up. I asked some trade questions in a coupla basketball fora. My efforts to trade someone like Randolph for someone who could help me in assists and 3s or maybe blocks were swiftly repelled. Happily, Guru came along with just the type of offer I was looking for -- Conley, who had been suggested to me as one of the type of players I should be looking to acquire, for Gortat, who I had picked up on waivers anyway and was another producer of excess rebounds. It looked reasonable to me as I assessed it and besides Guru in my experience does not offer (or accept) unreasonable trades. Luckily it turns out RIHC is not a trading league anyway. So I wasn't going to stand out as the type of player who doesn;t trade because he has no confidence in what he's doing.
Sure enough – I take the lead in the league in early November and hold it till early December. TBSSE -- get ready to revise your "Best Upsets of All Time" show. Everyone was healthy except for Curry with his ankle problems. I was way over my games played quota however, and I had to cut back. (Although I now see that I ended up last in the league in games played because of sit-outs and on/off injuries late – won’t make that mistake again). But there was not to be a “Do You Believe In Miracles” moment in this league. I declined steadily, down to 5th by the end of December, and although I had up-and down- periods in the rest of the season, most of the time (see Yahoo! standings graph) I appeared to be in a tier of my own in 5th place with no one close to me on either side. I trust that the fact that I began to decline steadily and systematically after my trade is a mere coincidence.
I had a great time and congratulations to Florian. Was my season successful? That I don’t know – did my disguise as a knowledgeable fantasy basketball player fool anyone?

I had a great time playing in the RIHC this year. We had a fun group of managers. It seemed much easier to make trades than in past years Thanks to Guru for hosting and running the RIHC. And thanks to everyone for playing. Congratulations to Skinnee J. You had a great team.
I was very happy with how the year went. I thought my draft went quite well. However my team started so poorly (had a total of 18.5 points about 10 days into the season) I was actually starting to wonder about my team. Fortunately my team then went on a ridiculously good run that lasted until early March. At that point Skinnee J managed to pull off a blockbuster trade and my team had a few season-ending injuries (West, Humphries, Kirilenko). I thought he had a good chance of catching me, but fortunately I was able to pick up some good free agents and used my games remaining advantage to improve in the categories that I needed to.

I always go into a pool hoping to win. I was very surprised that I managed to get 87 points. Going into the year I figured that if I managed to get 70-72 points I should be able to win, but there was a strange dichotomy in the RIHC this year with 4 teams managing to get 68 points. My best decisions were picking up Frye off waivers and Matthews and Humphries as free agents. Almost everything worked out this year. If I could reverse one or two decisions I wouldn't have dropped Gortat or Tony Allen as free agents and I wouldn't have drafted Baron Davis.

I tend to be too impatient with players on my team. After one or two bad games, I'm ready to drop them. Otherwise this year worked out almost perfectly.
4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
The draft was very important in establishing a good base for my team. I was able to make trades or free agents pickups as needed to improve my team without too much difficulty. Unlike Toral I'm a long-time basketball fan. However as I have four young children I have virtually no time to watch basketball. Depressingly I probably watched less than 20 hours of basketball this season. However you can review a night's worth of basketball in about 5 minutes just by checking the boxscores as long as you know the context. Hopefully I can watch some more basketball in the playoffs.

Summary -
Had a furious comeback to steal the league at the end by a point.
Not a single player on my team for the stretch run was part of my original draft lol...
For League Managers:
I hadn't really tried these types of leagues til recently. Last year in baseball I hung back all year and made up 45 points in just over a month but came up 1 point short of a win. So that was fun, so I decided to give hoops a shot.
This particular league was comprable, I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I made up 15-20 points in the last month by adding some hot guys at the end (Lawson, Bayless to name a couple). I took the lead for the first time all season long with one day to go... and Dror and I battled to the last point in the last games on the last day with a few steals being the difference. So it was a lot of fun.
My expectations are always high for hoops. I've played multiple gurupie leagues for several years, and looking back through my history, I've never finished lower than 3rd in a Yahoo Hoops league since 2006. So expect to be in contention.
Best and worst decisions? I feel like I wasted a couple draft picks on OJ Mayo and Barbosa. Better decisions were to trade stars (Love, Nash, Bosh) for depth and specific categories I was trailing. This is contradictory to my normal strategy, but I assessed things and I was severely lacking depth and quality starts across the board.
2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year? Rules seem fine, although I know I am not looking forward to the DL/injury thing that the "big leagues" do, I'd rather just have an extra roster spot than have to track my players day to day health.
3. I'm not sure falling to nearly last every year in every league is exactly the best strategy. I'm not sure why it is... but I always start slow. I am always choosy early on about games played, and I guess it means I'm a bad drafter. I have no idea.
4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
Ok... so I guess the moral of the story is that the draft isn't terribly important? cause not a single guy was left. But its not neccessarily cause they were bad picks, just that I constantly look to reshuffle things and improve where I am lacking. I think some people get so married to the guys they draft its a detriment to their team building. To me, "everybodies got a price" and nobody is off limits. You might have to pay to get them, but I am married to no player.
So I traded Nash, Bosh, Love, Bargnani who were all high picks... I traded away Rose who i acquired using Nash/Bosh... so he got flipped too in a package for Howard. The timing of this was huge, cause he fixed my FG% but wasn't on my team long enough to kill my FT% which was very high from the above mentioned guys.

I don't know, didn't really pay much attention to the RIHC... looks like it was some top notch competition and I look forward to the challenge next year.
