Now that the RIHC draft has finished, I invite each of the participants to share any reactions that they have. Feel free to say as much or as little as you wish. As a guide, you might consider the following questions:

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
2) What surprised you?
3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Outsiders who were not participating in the draft are also welcome to share their general reactions.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

I tend to go big in the first round and this year is no different, I think Love under Adelman can even do better than last year.

2) What surprised you?

That Dirk fell to me rather late in the second round was a surprise to me, the plan there was a PG actually....

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

I had to change my plan when Dirk fell in my lap, as I mentioned in 2) Result: I really needed a PG in Round 3. So I might have reached there a little.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Not much I think, I'd prolly not take Glen Davis if I had known it was not sure he was starting.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Best: 7.04 Marcus Thornton (4.04 - Joe Johnson, I find that pretty good value too, if he can do better than last year, that is)
Worst: 12.09 Glen Davis ... I think I reached there, but I really wanted a 3rd C before I had to pick Ruben Bountje-Bountje.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

7.01 Jarret Jack could be huge, he can fill the stats really.
8.01 N. Batum(wanted him too)
10.04 Kris Humphries (now he's signed and good to go)

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

2.10 Rudy Gay (because he was injured last year, if 100% healthy then I shut up ;)

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

skinneej, I think.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

In most hoops drafts, I try to build a strong base with my first 4-6 players, then look for areas I need to improve to help weaker categories. In this year's draft, I also had the added goal of keeping all draftees under 30 years old (which I succeeded in.) We all know this season is greatly compacted and the older players will likely struggle as the season goes along. Some vets will get off nights, and others will get rested more often, so this gives a slight bump to the younger stars.

2) What surprised you?

Not much surprises me in RIHC drafts. I expect the best each year and the draft was solid again. If anything, I saw very little reaching for players and managers picked pretty close to ADPs as far as I could tell.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

The only real change in planning was who fell to me at the first 2 picks. I had hoped for a pairing of either Westbrook or Deron with Amare or Pau Gasol. Since Curry lasted until pick 10, then both the bigs off the board, I started looking at the next best options and chose Jefferson over Horford. Curry+Jefferson gave me a solid pairing, perhaps even better balanced than other possibilities. The downside is injury risk, so we will see how this plays out for the season.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

I don't think I'd change much. My 9th round pick Bayless could have been a little early looking at the other RIHC drafts, so might could have snagged him a couple rounds later. I had the option of grabbing two bigs at #9/10 with Ed Davis and Humphries or even grabbing Ryan Anderson who was also on my short list. I still think Bayless will do well this year, but might have missed an opportunity.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Best - David Lee at #39. Worst - Bayless as mentioned or maybe Fredette in 12th round (could have gotten Bass or Favors who I considered.)

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Obviously like many of Guru's choices that were taken right before my pick (Kevin Martin, Jennings and Harden.) Gescom also nabbed a few like Blake Griffin and Noah that I had targetted. Kidd and Billups at the end of the 5th round could be big since they were typically 2nd/3rd rounders last several years. Also, Richard Hamilton in the 12th round was a nice grab. Kemba Walker would have been my 12th round pick instead of Fredette if he had made it that far. Oh, and Dirk at #21 and Kobe at #24 overall is amazing in any draft!

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

As already mentioned, I didn't expect Gay to go in 2nd round (#30 on my rankings) and Javale McGee was taken nearly 2 rounds before I expected. I know big guys often go earlier than their typical rankings, so not a huge surprise but still little high.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Since Guru has half my roster and I have half of his, I could probably switch with him and be pretty happy! Da Bomb and Florian built nice squads too. deejay looks to have gotten all former all-star starters (Dirk, Nash, Joe Johnson, Brand, KG and Grant Hill) to go with the beast KLove. Time will tell if that strategy worked or not...

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Normal strategy is to pick the best available player. When you pick at the ends of the draft you sometimes have to sacrifice that a bit to fill a need. Getting Lebron with my first pick just helps out in so many areas, but with my next 2 picks I knew I would try and get a PG and C. Mission accomplished, unfortunately my C could be out for the year, or at least a significant portion.

2) What surprised you?

Nothing really about the draft per se, it's just so odd to see players like Dirk go middle of round 2, Kobe & Nash in round 3, Kidd in round 5 and Allen at the end of round 6. It's not all that long ago they were all first round choices, and often early ones at that.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It didn't really until the news broke about Lopez's injury and then I tried to stuff some big guy stats with late round picks. There were some players that I would have taken otherwise ( and maybe should have )

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Hindsight is 20-20, but with the depth at the center position, I could have waited on a C and not taken Brook with the 2nd pick in round 3. I would have taken Granger if he wasn't snagged one pick earlier.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Worst- Brook Lopez ( I'm not getting over that pick ), only due to his injury
Best- I think Ray Allen is going to prove tremendous value as the next to last pick in the 6th round, and I think Hedo, based on early returns could be solid as the next to last pick round 10

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

I really like Guru's pick of Humphries in round 10. I think he's going to surprise us all again and West in round 7 by Gescom, I wish I had taken both of them

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

I fell into the Curry hype last year, and with his nagging injuries, I just don't think I could have pulled the trigger with the 10th pick ( although I love him as a player ), and maybe Ibaka early in round 4. Something doesn't seem right in the world with him picked earlier than Bosh ( even if by one pick )

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

I really like JayDog's team, especially his first 6 picks pick. I also like Guru's team alot.

(1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected? I don't really have a strategy going into these things. I usually just shoot for best player available and then try and adjust after that to fill holes. After the first few picks I go for for high risk & high reward players. Lottery ticket type players. Think I have quite a few of them. I'm not looking for finish in 5th. I am more "If you ain't first, you're last" theory. Which I guess is also my theory on my draft pick slot selection (last).

2) What surprised you? The Brook Lopez pick was a surprise... I wonder if my taking 2 top C's off the board early set in motion some folks reaching on C's. I like Brook too (pre-injury of course)... but I like him more in keeper leagues (he's just 23 years old I believe).

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded? After taking the two big C's at with 12/13 picks - Amare/Gasol - I needed to recover and balance things out significantly by adding multiple lower tier Guards.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently? Not a whole lot, pretty comfortable with my picks. Think I have some good depth paired with upside.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
Ty Lawson was my biggest gamble. I have pretty much hitched my wagon to his season. If he can't perform like a top PG this year, I am screwed. So he could be either my best or worst, we'll see at seasons end. Odom will probably be my worst if he continues to fight for playing time, I just thought he was a decent value at that stage. And its all older players he's fighting with (and a condensed schedule) so I'm thinking minutes should be ok. I am also a bit worried about Stephen Jackson's back but picked him anyway. May be kicking myself over that one.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals. Kris Humphries in the 10th is going to turn out to be a steal for Guru. Gescom getting Jrue Holiday at 3.11 was a great value. I had hopes of getting him at 3.12, but when it didn't happen I traded down out of one of those back to backs. He also got David West from me (and I had to settle for Odom) a few rounds later.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.Brook Lopez as I mentioned. But Duncan and Manu I had crossed off my board entirely cause I didn't want to mess with them in this condensed season with a coach who loves resting people. Thats why I leaned towards younger players with young legs.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?I like deejay's team with Love first and even though they are older the Dirk/Nash duo was a good value... but Joe Johnson in the 4th I think really completed the first four picks well. I think he has a good bounce back season. He also go Thornton late who helped me win some leagues last year once he got playing time...

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Usually I go with the following:
- Best player available for round 1-5 but avoiding duplicating positions
- Attention to position and weak categories for round 6-10
- High risk / reward or "coup" for 11-15
- Attention to ages, avoiding declining / too old players
- Get my big men no later than round 6-7, after which it's much harder to find value

2) What surprised you?

Not much, strong field made this draft very competitive as always. Javale McGee and Ty Lawson went higher than I thought. The rush for C in round 4 and 5 was brutal, especially when you pick at 4.02 and 5.11.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

I had to adapt because of that C rush my 5th and 6th pick. Also I couldn't pass on David West at 7.11 which left me very weak at SG / SF positions. I tried to recover for picks 8-11 but I'm not happy with that series of picks (Richardson, CJ Miles, Salmons).

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Get a strong SF earlier to not expose me to always reach for that position in later rounds.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Best: West at 7.11 or Hamilton at 12.02, time will tell.

Worst: I think Kidd at 5.11 will turn to be a big mistake as season unfolds. But I could also mention Richardson at 8.02, Miles at 10.02, Salmons at 11.11

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Brook Lopez going down, Humphries at 10.04 is probably the steal of the draft. Diaw at 7.08 and Jack at 7.10 will also return much higher value I think.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

McGee (3.08) and Lawson (3.12)

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Florian, skinneej, reeb, Guru...

Also. I forgot to mention as part of my rationale... I won the RIHC AA last year without a single player I originally drafted. So needless to say I am not married to anyone I picked. I'm not sure if that puts more or less stock in my draft... I guess more that I got the right guys who are trade worthy, but less in that I actually picked a guy to fill a specific role, cause that will all change as I go along.
