Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Apr 27, 2012, 10:16

This thread is for a general retrospective on the 2011-12 RIHC season. RIHC managers are encouraged, but not required, to post. Others are also invited to share their observations.

You may comment on any aspect of the season, including or excluding those listed below.

For League Managers:
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

For participants in one of the Qualifying Leagues:
5. How did your league experience compare to that observed for the RIHC?

6. I'd appreciate if someone from each QL would post the final standings of that league in this thread. (Please indicate who the managers were as well, if team names aren't self-identifying.) That will help me get organized for next fall. In addition, I'd like to hear from any QL commish (via email, preferably) if there were any behavioral issues which should be considered in evaluating next year's invitees for the RIHC and the AAA league(s). Belligerent behavior, or sustained non-participation are particular areas of concern.

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I am pretty happy with the result of my old team.
Not happy about drafting Glen Davis however. I would not draft him again. I think I swapped him for Brendan Rush at one point, that was a pretty good decision, Rush did very decent for me.
Drafting Shumpert was not too shabby either. He does a bit of everything.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

nope

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

Every year I say I will be better in Blocks, but it just never happens...

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

My draft was rather important, since I didnt do that many moves, picking up Rush and Dunleavy were decent ones however.

For League Managers:
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations....
Highly disappointing season due to a terrible draft - Odom, Billups, Stephen Jackson were all in the 4-8 round pick range and all disasters. I thought steady veterans would be good but the rookies I took late Kyrie/Rubio far outperformed them (so they were the positives). Perhaps it was the condensed schedule? I have no idea but my mid round veterans were in a fog all year with Odom being a prime example.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?
I think a switch to daily transactions or ESPN would be advisable. Not being to make a move and get a guy into my lineup same day cost me countless games and made injuries costly. Limits my ability to manage daily especially with the relatively short bench.

I understand some don't like that guys freeze in the Yahoo daily transactions -- but its only guys in active games in your lineup that night who are locked. Everyone else is eligible to be added/dropped. And I think especially in hoops (vs. baseball) where not everybody is playing every day its less of an annoyance cause your whole team isn't on lockdown for the night (each night).

3. What have you learned over the course of this season....
I guess in this shortened season I should have gone with more youth. But that won't help me in the future. Kind of a single year failure.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
I also struggled to get any deals done cause nobody wanted my struggling players which tied my hands at what I do best - trade.

Last year in the qualifying league I won - not a single player was left that I drafted. I had a much better draft and my players were in demand, so I guess its really the poor draft at the core of this years problem.

Felt like there wasn't a lot of the waiver wire to improve me squad, but I guess that's a result of a deep league. Somehow in G20 which I guess is a deeper league I was able to find useful waiver adds all year long.

Well, I am pretty happy to be the "best of the rest". Congrats to Luebeck Eagles for dominating, especially in the last half of the season. This is only my third season playing fantasy basketball, so my expectations weren't extremely high. I still could learn a lot, especially w/ regard to trade value. I think this was the first time in ~10 seasons of RotoGuru fantasy sports (mostly FB) in which I completed a trade. There didn't seem to be much trade talk going on (at least not w/ me!). Maybe I should've put Smith, Bynum, or healthy Lowry on the block.
Picking up Gooden was big for me. He was very good for the better part of the season. Additionally, Belinelli allowed me to stay near the top in 3s. Beyond that, most of my team produced at or above their draft position (at least while healthy).
I guess the only bad drop was Manimal toward the end of the season. He was waning a bit, and I had a large lead in RBs....so I thought it was a safe move. No other regrets on who I dropped. I may be too loyal to my draft picks, so as not to be "the dummy" who dropped XyZ. I had Dragic early, when Lowry missed a couple games, but dropped him when Lowry returned....unforeseeable, but unfortunate.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?
Transactions were a bit painful. I didn't like waiting the extra day to get a new guy active.
Would like to see 3RR draft, similar to RIFC.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?
I have a real problem judging the %age CATs ( I didn't learn that during the season...I knew it all along). If I could figure that out, it would really help. Of the top 7 teams, I had the worst total in the % CATs.
I feel like I was bitten hard by the injury bug in the middle of the season, yet that was my team's most productive portion. I was mediocre early on, and was "hanging on for dear life" the last few weeks.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
My draft was certainly important for me. My top 11 picks remained on my team for the duration of the season (w/ exception of Jordan....who I traded).
BEASTS: Josh Smith (killed my percentages however), Bynum, Calderon (relative to draft position anyway)
OUCHY: Lowry, Z-Bo, and Gallo.....These guys all produced well early, all missed 2+ months of the season, and none of them returned to form when they returned to the court.
PRODUCTIVE ENOUGH: Frye (extreme patience required), Stuckey (until end of season anyway), Knight (too good to flat out drop), Wade (Good enough, when he played)
HONORABLE MENTION: Richard Jefferson, who hit a lot of 3s for me early on.
The trade (Jordan and Robinson for David Lee) didn't end up doing much either way. I only got Lee for a handful of games, and Robinson also went down toward the end too. Oh well, I'm just happy that I got one done!

Thanks Guru, for orchestrating yet another enjoyable league!

I was happy with how my team did. I'm happy with most of my decisions. If I could reverse one it would be to never have drafted Eric Gordon.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

I think the rules are good as they are.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

I've learned that I don't need to make as many moves as I have in some prior years. I've learned that every year I make trade offers that fortunately are not accepted by the other team.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

The draft was important to my team. It established a good base. I was fortunate to be able to make trades and free agents pickups to fill in the gaps.

Dragic, Pekovic, Isisah Thomas, Klay Thompson, Mario Chambers and Mo Williams all provided significant boosts to my team as free agents.

I found trading to be much easier this year than in some years. I managed to trade my 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th round picks this year. I probably would have traded more of my original picks, but my 3rd (Gordon) and 11th (Kirilenko) round picks were untradable.

Thanks again to Guru for running this league!!!
