0 Subject: RIHC 2012-13: Draft Rationales

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Sat, Oct 20, 2012, 16:14

This thread will be for managers in the RotoGuru Invitational Hoops Challenge to provide the rationale for each pick.

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

Please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make your pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If possible, please draft your rationale at the time your are making that pick. Not only does that allow you to remember your thoughts "in the moment", but it also makes it simple to copy and paste it when it is due, avoiding unnecessary delays and/or placeholders.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale. Simply post something like:
for Guru
2.10 Robert Pack, PG, Team

This makes it easy for me (or any moderator) to splice the eventual rationale in the proper place.

3. If you are providing rationales after a placeholder has been inserted, then post it in the draft discussion thread, and someone will copy it over.

4. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

The general format should be:
1.01 Kevin Durant, SF, OKC
Several sentences of rationale.

In addition, along with your first player rationale, please comment on your rationale for your selection of draft order.

11.07 Nene Hilario, PF, WAS
at this point you have to either pick someone with potential or with guaranteed playing time when healthy. Nene might be both but he is not really healthy. latest reports indicate that he seems to be close to return but the season opener might be too early. If he is out for the start of the season I probably can put him in one of my injury slots and pick up the hottest player available so that I don't need to dump one of my drafted players who hasn't played yet or had a bad 1st game.

other than that Nene is not very special. he scores with a good FG%. he rebounds. he gets nearly a steal and a block per game. can you ask for more in round 11?

11.08 Danny Green, SG/SF, SAS

Hmmm, I was a bit unprepared for this pick, having had computer issues most of the day, and couldn't get online until my clock was more than half way gone. Panic set in. I had a few " undrafted " players on my limited short list, and Green wasn't one of them. I had fully intended to take Biyombo here, but couldn't pull the trigger, and thought he ( or Seraphin ) would be there this morning. What was I thinking?

I could have probably gotten Green later, and I probably would have preffered the other Green, Gerald, but so be it. He is the starting SG for the Spurs ( although Manu is lurking off the bench ). His game is fantasy friendly, last year in 23 minutes a game, he averaged 9 ppg, 1.5 treys, 1 steal, nearly 1 block and 4 boards per game, and good %'s.

I'm hopeful and expected uptick in minutes will translate into improved production. Even at last years numbers he returned 6-7th round value.

11.09 Derrick Rose, PG, Chi
I wasnít really planning on doing this. I started assembling my queue about 8 picks ago, and it started with Asik, Hawes, and Nene. I threw Rose in there just to keep him in mind.

When the three big men all disappeared, I started to think, ďWhy not?Ē I do think there is a reasonable chance the Rose will sit out the whole year. And there is also a chance the he wonít return until March, just in time to see if he can be ready for the playoffs. But if he should happen to come back in January, then this could really work out well.

The downside? Since we have two injury slots, and (so far-knock on wood) I have no one that I need to stash there, my only loss is the opportunity cost of an 11th round pick. If there was someone that I really wanted, Iíd take him. But I donít, and Iíve also got a sense that Iím going to be weak in assists.

If we werenít using injury slots, I wouldnít do this. But we are. And I did.

Turner was very good at times last season, and I look for him to be more consistent this season. I was thinking he had fallen a bit too far, so he was more of a "best available" than a "fill a need" guy.

11.11 Jerryd Bayless, PG, Mem
Bayless moves to a new team and lines up behind Conley on the depth chart. But the other starting guard is more of a defensive guy, so I am hoping Bayless will get plenty of playing time as the third guard. He has shown the ability to be productive in the past and I am thinking he can contribute nicely for a late round pick.

11.12 Michael Beasley, SF, Pho
Very pleased with this selection. No way Beasley should be slipping this far. If he gets his head straight, i've gotten a 20ppg scorer in the 11th round. Even if not, post-Nash Phoenix definitely needs Beaseley's scoring. I feel a career year on the horizon, and that's the type of upside i want at this point in the draft.

12.01 Dorell Wright, SF, Phi
A couple of seasons ago, Wright was a 4th round pick and exhibited a versatile and multi-tooled fantasy skillset. After a down year last season, things look on the up again as he picks up 6th man duties in Philly. 30mpg seems possible, as JRich and Evan Turner cannot possibly play 35 every night. I expect something between his 2010 and 2011 numbers - that means tonnes of 3s and steals, and even a few assists. There are rumours he'll play some backup PG. Pretty nice pick here overall, i would say.

Green is a sleeper, and may only stick around until Granger is healthy. We'll have to see what he does in the meantime, and how long that might take. Sounds like Granger might deal with trouble all season.

12.04 Kevin Seraphin, PF/C, Was
Back to the youth movement. Seraphin (22) posted 14 pts, 7 rebs, and 1.8 blocks in his 21 starts last season. Shot 55% FG and 72% FT post-ASB. Those numbers probably reflect the upside potential, but he should get ample playing time, and might even start. Currently out with a calf injury, but this doesnít seem to be a long-term concern.

I thought about taking Hinrich here (since I have Rose as well) to complete a Chicago PG, but decided to go big instead.

12.05 Robin Lopez, C, NOR

In assessing my draft, I seem to be pretty strong in most cats, other than FT% and blocks. I can't readily cure the bricks coming from team SANFORDORS, but at least I can try and add some blocks. Biyombo was at the top of my list, and probably should have grabbed him a round earlier, and I fully expected Seraphin at least would be available.

Hopefully Lopez wins the starting gig in New Orleans, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of competition. I'm not expecting much more from him than a block per game and some RB's.

12.06 Chandler Parsons, SF, HOU
I looked at Danny Green, Micheal Beasley, Dorell Wright and Chandler Parsons for my 11.07. Since some of them were still there when I woke up this morning I simply looked at the news from last night. there was no news. Beasley and Wright went right after breakfast so I hoped that Parsons would last. he did.
I had him last season in a different league and he provided solid value in the 2nd half of the season. It seems that he will start for now and should provide similar stats than last year. He is pretty average in most counting stats with above average numbers in steals and threes, 2 categories where I project myself behind.
I hope that Delfino who is challenging him for the starting gig will come off the bench all season to give Parsons the 30 minutes per game I need him for.

12.07, Jeff Green, SF BOS
After three preseason games, Green leads the team in points (15.0 PPG), field-goal percentage (58.6 percent) and minutes played (26.7 MPG).
Of course he's sitting behind Pierce.
I'm hoping for maybe 23-25 minutes, 12pts, 6rbs and maybe 53% FG. Not bad for a 12th round pick.

12.08 Kirk Hinrich, PG, Chi
I really wanted a third PG on my team. It came down to Hinrich, Sessions and Jack. Hinrich will probably start for at least the first half of the season. He may start all year if Rose does not make it back until next year. He should put up at least 10ppg, 2-3 boards, 4-5 assists, 1 steal and 1-1.5 3PTM. At this point in the draft I'm happy with those numbers.

I had been eyeing Demar for several rounds now. It just seems like his critics have kept his stock down. Sure, he doesnít shoot the three ball well at all for a SG. But he contributes in other areas and at this point in the draft, Iíll take an athletic starter that should get plenty of minutes and scoring opportunities on his team. Iím surprised he has slipped this far and feel pretty good about picking him up here.

12.12. Jae Crowder, SF, DAL
13.01. Jarrett Jack, PG, GSW

Jae Crowder wasn't in my focus, to say the truth I have never heard about him before the preseason. This pick was the result of a sudden decision. With Nowitzki's injury Crowder got a lot of chance in the last six games, I realised the team was changing, but he was always in the starting five and produced well in all these games. I hope it was not only an experience but a final decision to build the team in absence of Dirk.

In this phase of the draft I needed to strength in PG position because I had only real PG Dragic is not enough to ensure good results in Assists. My second option in PG position was Kemba Walker, who can collect assists too, but I felt my team is too week in this area. I picked up Jack, because of his ability, but I know, until Curry is healthy Jack will not get enough time to be an elite fantasy player. I think it will be at least 20 games when Jack will be a starter, and in the other games hi will play about 25 minutes. It could be enough for him to produce as third option of my team at PG position.

Not sure why I took another point guard here except to set up a battle of backup point guards. It is late in the draft and he seemed to be the best insurance in case any of my prior PG draft picks bombs out. Best case scenario would be that he starts or plays significant minutes with Kemba Walker.

My rationale for drafting Brandon Bass was that I knew what I could expect from him on a nightly basis. I donít think thatís true anymore. Bassí knee seems to be bothering him and Sullinger has gotten the start in several games and played well. I donít like what that could mean for Bass. Solution: pick up Sullinger. Not only does this help cover my hide for selecting Bass too early, but I feel that Sullinger compliments the less exciting but steady Bass due to his breakout potential. I will plan on playing whichever one is getting the minutes in Boston until this situation sorts itself out.

13.05 Dion Waiters, SG, Cle

Finding good players in the 13th round is difficult. Rookies often outperform their average draft position. Waiters was the 4th pick in the draft last year, so he should get decent playing time. He doesn't have great competition at SG in Cleveland, though he does have Byron Scott to deal with as a coach. The experts seem to have him ranked in the 100-120 range, so this seemed like a reasonable time to take a gamble on him.

when given the time James Johnson puts up the numbers. he can do a bit of everything. 13.08 Tristan Thompson PF/C Cle

At this point in the draft, I was hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Virtually every site includes the words " sleeper " or " breakout potential " when discussing Tristan for the upcoming season. Unfortunately the same terms have been used when discussing some with a similar name, Tyrus Thomas, over the past few years. I'm hoping Tristan lives up to the hype.

He's young, only his second year. It looked like he was going to start for Cleveland, but now it's not as certain.

None the less, in limited time last year he averaged 8 ppg, 6.5 Rb's, and 1 block per. I'm hoping for a nice uptick in those numbers. Plus he fits right in with the rest of the guys on my team who are abysmal from the stripe.

13.12 AJ Price, PG, Was

Truthfully, i made these next 2 picks after about 5 beers on the night before i got married. I remember clumsily marking up my cheatsheet and not liking any of the names that were left. This is also the point in the draft where there can be some value in picking up replacements for injured starters, and that was my thinking here.

Price is locked in as the Wizards starting PG until Wall returns. Shelvin Mack was released, so he's basically got the gig to himself. My expectations are modest - some 3s and assists and a low FG%, but you know what? That's fine at the end of round 13.

14.01 Chris Copeland, PF, NYK
The Knicks have been devastated by injuries and Copeland has been the primary beneficiary. He's had an excellent preseason, and i don't see why that cannot continue whilst the Knicks roster is lacking bodies. That Euroleague experience in Belgium will mean he's NBA-ready. Basically, this was just a gut call. If i can get some monster games out of him in the first few weeks whilst the roster situation is murky, that's a good result. But maybe he'll grow into a role and be more of a keeper. Again, that's a reasonable risk reward scenario for round 14.

I was reviewing all of the players on my roster and their respective position eligibilities. In the process, I discovered that the only player eligible at SF was Gallinari. I figured I should look for some flexibility, especially in the event that he was ever injured.

As fate would have it, one of the highest ranked remaining players at SF was also on Denver, Wilson Chandler. I donít consider this a classic handcuff situation, although it does seem reasonable that if Gallinari were to be injured, Chandler would see extra playing time. But itís possible that Chandler will have value even if Gallinari stays healthy.

At some point, Iíll probably want a non-Denver SF as well, although not necessarily to start the season.

In these rounds I wanted Nate Robinson, and Jeff Green, but they was picked up by another managers before me. I realised I have only three guards who are starters so I focused to a guard at first.

Gerald Henderson could help my team mainly in points with relatively good percentages. I feel his starting position is stable. There are some risky factor in the busy roster, but the manager trust is in Henderson. Last year this was the situation, I hope this is not changed.

My last pick was Patterson. His productivity depends on how many minutes he will get. When he is on the court he doesn't waist the time, very effective. He can help me in rebounds and blocks, and maybe points too.

15.07 Al Harrington, PF, ORL
initially I wanted Steve Novak here to get me the amount of 3s that I am still lacking. that did not turn out because deejay took him a few picks in front of me.
now that Chandler seems to be back for the opener I only have Chris Kaman that seems to be IL eligible. since we have 2 spots and I can stash a drafted player directly into the IL slot I looked at all injured guys if someone would be worth drafting that can actually help my team in 2 or 3 months. Al Harrington is exactly that. It even seems that he is ahead of his scheduled mid-December return but I don't count on that. When healthy he should get around 30 minutes where. he is also able to shoot a lot of threes so there is even a fit with my team beside the injury status.
I also thought about some rookies that could see some playing time, but they are all uncertain and not starting right now. I don't name them here because I'll probably pick some of them up when I put Kaman and Harrington in the DL slots.

15.08 DJ Augustin PG IND

I was just trying to grab the best available with this pick, and DJ was at the top of my list. Hill is the starter at this point, but has been injured. I think DJ gets reasonable run.

In a timeshare last year with Kemba, DJ averaged 11 points, 6+ assists, nearly a steal per and 1.3 trey. Not bad production from round 15.

15.09 Taj Gibson, PF, Chi
Could put up decent numbers even if the Chicago bigs stay healthy. Additionally, with Boozer (as the old man) on my roster, Gibson provides some cushion in the event of Boozer downtime.

15.10 Trevor Booker, PF, Was
Another big man who can get some PT early on. I remember him doing some good things as a WW pickup last season. Again, no sure thing to stick around, but w/ Bynum and Stoudemire out I better get some backup big men.

15.11 Terrence Jones, SF, Hou

Jones is an athletic rookie who put up good all around numbers for Kentucky last year. He has shown signs of promise in preseason, and I decided to take a flyer on him hoping he will be able to carve out starer's minutes for Houston. Was hoping to get Gibson with this pick.

15.12 [no pick - getting married instead!]

Maybe the best selection in the entire draft!
