Congratulations to Dave R (aka SANFORDORS), who won the RIHC, who started the season strong and never looked back, leaving the rest of the league in the dust.
This thread is for a general retrospective on the 2015-16 RIHC season. RIHC managers are encouraged, but not required, to post. Others are also invited to share their observations.
You may comment on any aspect of the season, including or excluding those listed below.
For League Managers: 1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?
2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?
3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?
4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
For participants in one of the Qualifying Leagues: 5. How did your league experience compare to that observed for the RIHC?
6. I'd appreciate if someone from each QL would send me a link to your league's final standings, so that I can post them here. (Please indicate who the managers were as well, if team names aren't self-identifying.) That will help me get organized for next fall. In addition, I'd like to hear from any QL commish (via email, preferably) if there were any behavioral issues which should be considered in evaluating next year's invitees for the RIHC and the AAA league(s). Belligerent behavior, or sustained non-participation are particular areas of concern. |

Wow, what a season. I loved my draft, even taking into consideration picking three rookies in my first 9 picks. Team SANFORDORS just seemed to get stronger as the season rolled on, despite losing Okafor for the season on 2/28 after 53 games, despite Vucevic missing most of March, and despite strong challenges from Swish City, Da Bomb early on, and a strong finish by Steelers.
Curry was the key. Curry should be the unanimous league MVP and was no doubt, the best fantasy asset to own this year. By far. And what can you say about Karl Anthony Towns, what a future this guy has.
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?
Going into each season, my hope is to finish high enough to get a return invite. As anyone who has participated knows, it's easier to stay in the " bigs ", than to earn your way back.
Best decision was to pick up Nikola Jokic on 11/19, worst decision was to drop him 3 weeks later. The trade for Ryan Anderson didn't pan out as planned, but the reality was, I moved Mudiay and Parker, both who rarely left my bench ( but arguably played much better after the trade ) , and Afflalo who didn't offer much to me but 3's and points, and I had a huge lead in points and was solidly 2nd, with little hope to move to the top, or drop a spot in 3's.
As a matter of fact, I finished with nearly 2000 more points for the year than the 2nd spot.... that's crazy.
2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?
None at all, I love the format
3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?
One thing that always haunted me in past years were the % cats. I really focused this year on them, and it payed off. It's really a delicate balance to maximize points in the counting cats, but not devistate the %'s
4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
The draft.... it started with having the choice of any slot. I opted for 2nd hoping for Steph, thinking if he went first, AD would be a nice consolation. That turned out to be no contest.
My top 7 draft picks all finished in the top 50 as calculated by the ESPN player rater. That's solid in a 12 team league. My draft was key. Okafor pre injury ( 9th round ) and Caldwell-Pope ( 12th ) are the only other draft picks to survive the season on my roster. Millsap was solid all season ( 11th in the player rater ) , and KAT picked in the 4th turned out to be a huge steal, finishing 7th in the player rater. Those 3 were the equivalent of 3 first round picks. Kemba finished 16th.... you get the picture.
I can't really target any pick ups who made any real contributions, although Beverly and Teletovic were nice adds as they both came on strong at the end, but not difference makers
So in looking back, it started with the draft and ended with the draft. Luck plays a huge role, as does not having any devastating injuries
As usual a huge thanks to Guru for starting, organizing, and continuing this. Always fun, and always a great group of managers

We are having difficulty with access to internet in the aftermath of the quake here. I will try to post observations heresoon. I was pleased withoverall performance and ability to move up. Two trades I was involved in helped both teams in my opinion. Injuries affected my team, as it did others, but that is what the real teams have to deal with too. The Manta Rays have come through the quake intact, but many others here could use you prayers and/or well wishes. Thanks for a great season.
