Congratulations to Swish City, who won the RIHC with a microscopic .5 point margin over Dave R.

This thread is for a general retrospective on the 2017-18 RIHC season. RIHC managers are encouraged, but not required, to post. Others are also invited to share their observations.

You may comment on any aspect of the season, including or excluding those listed below.

For League Managers:
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

For participants in any of the Qualifying Leagues:
5. How did your league experience compare to that observed for the RIHC?

6. I'd appreciate if someone from each QL would send me a link to your league's final standings, so that I can post them here. (Please indicate who the managers were as well, if team names aren't self-identifying.) That will help me get organized for next fall. In addition, I'd like to hear from any QL commish (via email, preferably) if there were any behavioral issues which should be considered in evaluating next year's invitees for the RIHC and the AAA league(s). Belligerent behavior, or sustained non-participation are particular areas of concern.

For the next year, I typically invite the top 4 of the RIHC, the top 3 in each AAA league, and the AA winner, plus me.

There was no AA league this year. And I did finish in the top 4 this year, so that could save another spot. But including ties, there are 10 teams in AAA leagues ranked third or better.

I'll have to develop a way to break ties. Maybe the teams with the lower choice for their draft position should have priority? Or random draw? Any other ideas?

Doesn't have to be solved until the fall, of course.

Could use the teams performance during the 2016-17 Season. That's a merit system.

Yeah, I thought of that too. That may be the most merit-based, although it bears no relationship to the current season at all.

1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be?

I always play to win, although in a tough 16 team league like this, to say that is your expectation is pretty arrogant. So I would say that remaining in RIHC for the following season was my expectation, and I met that.

While I had a few injuries and a flop or two, honestly I have to say that I had many more things go my way than didn't:

- Anthony Davis played in 75 games and improved in EVERY category except a minor 0.7 decrease in REB. He deservedly earned the #1 rating in the Player Rater.
- Paul George was his usual consistent self (even if he shot awful relative to last year) and finished 12th on the player rater as the 18th pick in the draft.
- Jrue Holiday was incredible. Career highs in PT, FG, 3, REB (4.5), BLK (0.8!) to earn 11th in the player rater as the 55th pick.
- Julius Randle overcame a slow start and a bench role to earn 53rd in the player rater based upon a really strong FG and PTS.
- JJ Redick was amazing, posting career highs in PTS, 3s and REB while shooting 90% FT, enough to earn 61st on the player rater as the 90th pick in the draft.
- I also hit paydirt on a variety of subs throughout the year, particularly Tyreke Evans (19 PT, 2.2 3s, 5.1 REB, 5.2 AST!) and Courtney Lee.

The biggest flops were Mike Conley (people get hurt, wtf you going to do - better than losing Kawhi all year) and George Hill. But they were very much offset by the players noted above, plus the contributions of injured players Markieff Morris and Nicholas Batum, who I got 67 and 63 games from, respectively.

2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?

Nah. The format is well established and forces you to really work hard to compete. It is as it should be.

3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?

My biggest regret is that I let 3s get away from me mid-season. At some point I think I had 12 or 13 points in threes and it seemed like I was red hot. Between George, Redick, Holiday, C. Lee, Tyreke and Bazemore it seemed like I had a really stable base. Lee eventually got hurt and stopped shooting, Evans got hurt and Bazemore became ineffective and I did not react in time at all. Threes can be an easy streaming pick so it was simply a lack of attention. I eventually found some help late in the year from Ellington and Mills but it was just too late.

4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?

I would say 85% of my success was from the draft, although I would not have finished top 3 without those key pickups of Evans and Lee.
