Now that the RIHC draft has finished, I invite each of the participants to share any reactions that they have. Feel free to say as much or as little as you wish. As a guide, you might consider the following questions:

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
2) What surprised you?
3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Outsiders who were not participating in the draft are also welcome to share their general reactions.

Somebody's gotta go first:

My strategy for this draft would be best described as "by the seat of my pants". Having only played the Gurupie 20 league for the last forever number of years, I've dug deep into rosters. I think that might have hindered my decision process on some picks (cough Giles cough). I went in wanting Durant. Then thought I'd go "find an elite skill guy". Wall and Dimes. Then the plan went "Defense and/or potential 1+1+1 guys". I then realized it was more "(potential) value picks" which is code words for always injured guys. I selected 7 guys who played less than 60 games last season. Sigh.

During the draft I'm seeing 'my spreadsheet' this, 'pre-ranked players' that. What?? I'm toast. I finally realized how to pre-rank players on the 16th pick. Oh yeah. I was wondering why Draftime sucked for not knowing who was still available easily (cough Schroder cough). I suck.

Reviewing my roster, having all the cards fall my way, this team tops out at 5th place. So that means I'm aiming for 4th or higher. Of course it has a high potential for complete suckdom. FG% is a guaranteed 1, pending waiver/free agent pickups. Just not seeing it. Ugh.

In an alternate universe, I'm loading the pre-ranks and doing DDoS attacks against Species and TommyD, my newfound archenemies for stealing my guys (both before and after I picked...what??) while they are on the clock. That and find a few bigs with better FG%s.

Best/worst: Eric Gordon/Harry Giles with the potential to flip flop places if Vlade gets fired and the new GM fire sells all the duplication/triplication on the crappily constructed roster. Gordon is best in terms of value, assuming health. By health, I'm concerned about his arm dropping off while pumping out 10+ 3 attempts per game (a guy can dream).

Excellent picks: tommyd and Schroder at 12.09. I'm not letting go of that one. Without an established return for Russ, there is excellent opportunities. Guru and D'angelo Russell at 6.12. The Nets will run and then run some more. Tosh and Lord Russ Westbrook. He's got a great backup...wait this is about Russ. Back to back triple doubles at the 8th pick, come on. Apparently I think all PGs are good value picks.

Ooops/Early: Species and Dejounte Murray. As Species already said, road travel blues. Sorry to kick a dead horse, man. RSF and most of my roster. I love them all and hate them all at the same time. Dave R and Jarrett Allen. Absolutely a great pick, but just seemed earlier that I would have expect, but probably not considering the hype and media coverage.

Mike D Trader Special: Anyones but mine. But eyeballing the names and values, I think I'd steal tommyd's just because it has a lot of guys I'd like to catch on TV. And it has...ok thats a dead horse. Also like Guru's squad. Lots of value and potentials. VanVleet at 13.01 looks excellent too...another PG.

Overall, I have my work cut out, but will be better prepared for next season, here or AAA. That sounds more defeatist that it is. I'm bringing the hammer, now just nobody get hurt lifting. Please. I'm looking at you Gallo.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
Generally in early rounds to take best available/highest rated? and later rounds for need. I usually like to get a PG in 1st or 2nd round. Generally went as expected in first few rounds.
2) What surprised you?
The run on centers over what I thought were more highly rated players in rounds 4-6.
That I drafted 3 rookies and not even the top 2 rated roto players. This hopefully will indicate a deep and talented draft or I am in trouble.
3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
Approach generally stayed the same but did draft second center earlier than planned.
At the end of draft decided to take some risk with players with potential upside rather than ranking.
4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
I do not think I would change much except posibly approach to last 3 picks who were "flyers"
5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
best pick: Jokic or Aldridge
worst pick: TJ warren or Fournier i(if he cannot find his shooting touch)
6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
Covington @ 8.04; M. Morris @13.04; Pau Gasol @ 15.06; and D. Favors @11.04
7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
Ayton @3.02; Many of the centers
8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?
Guru has an interesting team. Species and TD are maybes.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

I only had a plan for the first round and wanted to be in top 5 preferably as close to 5 as possible. I was happy with fourth. After that it was pick the bpa for the first half of the draft then look at positions a little more in the second half. I was lucky that I locked the center position up early.

2) What surprised you?

How early some of the rookies were drafted , I`ve been in the RIHC before but I find that people are way more aggressive drafting rookies then in AAA and AA.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It didn`t really I kept an eye out to position flexibility more as the draft unfolded.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Maybe try and lock a premier point up earlier and check that ESPN player eligibility was the same as Yahoo.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

I like Schroder, I think he will have a big year especially if Russ misses anytime and even if he doesn`t I think he will outperform this draft ranking. Worst pick would be Mirotic, I probably should have had another point guard and I think Mirotic would have been there a couple of rounds later.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Covington is a steal in the 8th round, I think Caris Levert could put up some great numbers across the board. Maarkkanen could be great if he comes back sooner than expected and is healthy.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Ayton for sure, Taytum is in a log jam for playing time but he is going to be a star. Mirotic.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

I think twolves would be interesting Trae Young and Jokic are going to be fun to watch.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Once I settled on picking first, I knew I would picking in pairs from that point on. With two full rounds taking place between sets of picks, I had to be willing to draft targeted guys somewhat ahead of ADP in order to get them. Having said that, I really didn't have many "targeted" guys, so I pretty much went with the flow.

2) What surprised you?

I had forgotten that ESPN is a bit stingy with season-opening position flexibility, and one consequence was the limited supply of centers. By the time I got around to looking for a second starting center, I realized that other managers were more on top of that situation, and thus I had to be willing to reach a bit deeper.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

Once I nabbed my second center (Cauley-Stein), I was content to let others chase the remaining centers. I go into the season with only one backup C (Dirk) - the last pick of the draft. Hopefully AD will stay relatively healthy, because if I have to replace too many of his games with Dirk, this could be a tough season.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Probably nothing. Maybe look for a second center earlier, although I'm content with my situation.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

There were a couple of guys that I know I reached for. Collin Sexton is one - although he went two rounds earlier in one of the AAA leagues. As I was drafting for the first 10 rounds while traveling, I didn't take much time to plan ahead. Just react and draft.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

Didn't pay that much attention to what others were doing. And I don't recall many "oh crap" moments - when targets were stolen out from under my nose. Maybe that should be worrisome.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

As noted above, centers seemed to be in demand earlier than anticipated.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

Since I didn't really pay much attention to others, I have no opinion.

As to my own team, I think I should generally be OK in most of the counting stats - as long as AD stays healthy. The downside of drafting first is that a lot of the season's potential is conditional on that #1 pick staying active. I'm less certain about my percentages. I may be average at best in those two cats.

I do have a fair number of younger players who I hope will be stepping up - Donovan Mitchell, D'Angelo Russell, John Collins, Brandon Ingram, Kevin Knox, Collin Sexton. A top finish will require a favorable showing from many of them.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it work as expected?

Yes, although I believe one of my strengths is the ability to change on the fly when necessary, so as not to be stuck if things go awry.

That said, things did go roughly to plan. I expected to get a big and a pg in rounds 1 and 2 and that happened with Curry and Gobert. From there, my strategy was to work "from the outside in" -- loosely meaning to focus on pg and big men early before getting SG/SF and even PF types.

It did work as roughly intended. In the first 5 rounds I got 2 pg,2 C and a PF before getting another PF, a SG and a SF in rounds 6 through 8. From there, it is mostly BPA and fill in with value picks (Barnes, Jackson, Monk, Hernangomez).

2) What surprised you?

I was a bit surprised by the draft positions of rookies. Yes there is Ben Simmons-like upside.....but there are so many more failures than stars IMO.

Otherwise, nothing should surprise most managers. Most of us have done multiple Rotoguru Invitational drafts before and should be prepared.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It didn't very much. The first 5 rounds went well and the next 5 were fine. After that it is filling in with all the value you can.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

1 - Schedule my trip to Japan at another time
2 - I say this after every draft. I would prefer to use available draft software to track progress and react more quickly to categorical weaknesses.

5) You best and worst pick, in retrospective

I think Harrison Barnes (9.06) and Reggie Jackson (11.06) were both steals. Monk and Hernangomez have the potential to be excellent as well.

Worst - One could say Dujuante Murray but that is too easy. I regret James Johnson at 10.07. I went to bed and queued up enough players for 2 picks in case the round went quickly. With Barnes grabbed in Round 9, Johnson in round 10 was duplicative. If I was in the Western Hemisphere I would have taken Malcolm Brogdon.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that were particularly good steals.

Robert Covington - had him near the top of my queue for 2 rounds but couldn't pull the trigger. I already had elite 3s and when you pull those out of the equation his value drops.

JJ Redick at 11.03 for youngroman. Sure he came off the bench in game 1 but he delivers nice stats/percentages. I also would have picked him over James Johnson (in the context of getting Barnes the round earlier).

Dwayne Dedmon at 12.04 can deliver big man stats just a hair below centers drafted 4 or 5 rounds earlier. He would have been my pick in round 12 (the infamous D. Murray pick) had he been there.

7) 2 or 3 players you felt were taken higher than expected

Ayton at 3.02 over the likes of Green,Middleton, Butler and Booker is criminal. I didn't share the love for Taurean Price or Wendell Carter either. Sorry eserel.

8) If you had to trade teams with another manager, who would it be?

Dave R. I would be curious what the historical stats say, but my feeling is that Dave R. comes the closest to rivaling swish as the best, most consistent managers in RIHC. Sanfordors has great balance on his team.....if he can salvage some FT% I think he is a favorite.

I am afraid I may have a fg% problem that I cannot overcome. I like my balance, but I am leaning on so many multi-cat guys to contribute a few droplets everywhere instead of a gaggle of category stuffers that provide big stats in key categories.

It's like my team is a drop by drop water torture vs. someone pouring a whole bucket of water in certain categories. I guess we will see.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it work as expected?
Having the first choice at draft position, I opted to move down far enough to have reasonable chance of drafting Jokic or Lebron, figuring the top 6 were a " given ". Nothing is certain, but that worked. After much thought I opted for Lebron, thinking Drummond would be there at 2.06. I think they pair nicely. Beyond that, just adjust on the fly

2) What surprised you?

I'm sure he's going to be a great player, even for this year but Ayton at 3.02 was a shock. There are a ton of C's that would be available later

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

Normally I'm a PG guy. Somehow I kept putting off grabbing one until pick 8.06

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Nothing I can think of

5) You best and worst pick, in retrospective

Best pick : Devin Booker, pick 31. I believe he will finish top 20 in value. Also big on Joe Ingles, pick 7.07. Sneaky value.

Worst pick: Allan Crabbe, round 11... yikes

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that were particularly good steals.

I think Eric Bledsoe has an excellent chance of exceeding his draft position( 36 ) and Josh Richardson as well ( 81 )

7) 2 or 3 players you felt were taken higher than expected

Again, Ayton at pick 26 and Species B2B picks of Murray and Pau ( sorry buddy )

8) If you had to trade teams with another manager, who would it be?

I like Tosh's team allot, along with Species and Guru.

Never count out Swish though

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
Not so much this time around. Probably i was a bit less prepared before the draft, but i felt i handled it on the fly not too badly. No doubt the start of my draft was different to what i expected by not having Embiid available at my draft slot but it's all good.

2) What surprised you?
Not much surprises me in RIHC anymore, but it did feel like we were all drafting off each other's boards.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
Embiid going at the start changed things, as he was a cornerstone for me last year.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
I'm good. I feel my squad a has a good breakout potential, and a decent measure of risk and reward.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
Best pick is LeVert at 98. Lock to retain value at that slot, even if he's not fully healthy. Worst pick could be Porzy right at the end, but feeling very, very confident about this draft overall.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
Josh Richardson and Bob Covington were at the top of my list for overall value for several rounds, so Tosh deservers credit for scooping up BOTH!

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
Ayton at 27 is way, way too high. Valuing a rookie at borderline 2nd round value might work out, but that's at the very top top of his upside. Centers too high. All of them. Including my pick of Valinciuanas.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?
None. My squad is sky high in upside, and needs to weather an early season storm. If i'm halfway at halftime through the season, i expect to win.

If choosing, i'd find it tough to split betwen Dave R (Nemesis), Guru (Stalwart) and Species (Just very solid from top to bottom)
