Subject: Gurupie 20: 2018-19 Regular Season Discussion
Posted by: GO
- [578392522] Sat, Oct 13, 2018, 22:56
Constitution I Site / Stat Source / League Fees All game, roster and scoring rules will be governed by ESPN. There is no fee for using ESPN.
II Draft The Supplemental Draft consists of a slow draft and held on the Draftime.com website. Time limits will be three hours for individual picks and 8 hours cumulative clock. You may draft until your picks run out or you have reached twelve (12) players. The clock will be stopped from 11:00 p.m. – 9 a.m. ET but picks may be made during that time. If you time out, you will be skipped and may select at any time. If you have been skipped and have not made up that pick and it becomes your turn again, you will be skipped for that pick as well. If you leave a Q and that person is available to post your pick, you will not be charged any time on your cumulative clock.
The draft order will be reverse of last year's regular season finish and it will NOT snake. Only players currently in the NBA database are eligible to be drafted. Waivers Priority will begin in the same order as the basic draft order (lottery excluded). Please note: The bottom 14 teams will be in the lottery similar to the actual NBA draft. Top three picks for next year will be selected via lottery. 4th-14th picks will be selected based on inverse order of standings.
III League Settings: Draft Type: Offline Draft and E-mail draft Max Teams: 20 Scoring Type: Rotisserie Max Moves: No maximum Max Trades: No maximum Trade Review: League Votes (7 needed to veto) Post Draft Players: Follow Waiver Rules Max Games Played: 720 (enforced by position) Roster Positions: G, G, F, F, C, Util, Util, Util, BN, BN, BN, BN Stat Categories: FG%, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, OREB, REB, AST, ST, BLK
IV Minimum Games Played / Penalties A team must accumulate a minimum of 656 GP (82 GP/pos) over the course of a season. For each 8 games of shortfall (1 GP/pos), a team is assigned one demerit. Demerits will be integer values only. Thus, a team with 1-8 games of shortfall will receive one demerit, 9-16 will receive 2 demerits, etc.
If a team finishes “in the money” for prize pool purposes (ranked 1-6), then demerits will be ignored.
For lottery teams, the following penalties will be applied to every pick in the next year’s supplement draft:
If a team accumulates more than 10 demerits, then it will be removed from the lottery and assigned the 14th pick in all rounds (i.e., behind all lottery teams, but ahead of any prize pool teams.)
For teams with less than 10 demerits, that team is pushed forward one place in the supplemental draft rankings for each demerit. For example, if a team finishes in last place (20th) and has 5 demerits, then that team will be treated in the draft rankings as though it finished in 15th place (and the teams actually finishing in places 16-20 will each move down one place.)
If more than one lottery team has a demerit, then the lottery rankings will be successively applied starting with the worst finisher and then moving up to the next worst finisher, etc.
Note: While the maximum number of games is measured on a GP/pos (enforced by the ESPN site), the minimum number of games is NOT. For minimum games, all measurements are based on total games played without regard for position.
V Trades All trades during the season must be submitted via the website’s offer trade feature to the league for review. If there is a draft pick it needs to be posted in our thread at rotoguru.com and needs to be confirmed by both parties. You might want to rationalize your trade as it takes just 7 members to reject the trade. You have one day to reject it so please check the site at LEAST once per day (many will have the email feature that emails all accepted trades). Remember with a Keeper league there may be draft picks involved so take the time to check those before rejecting it. Please only reject a trade based on the trade and not the teams involved. A trade by its very nature should help both teams either now, the future or both. All off-season/preseason trades will be governed by a commish.
VI Keepers Returning owners will have a deadline to declare what players from their team they wish to “keep” Each owner may keep up to 6.
You may keep less than six. You may trade keepers after you have declared, but you may not go over six until all 20 teams have officially declared at the Keeper deadline. At that point you may go up to 12 players.
If you keep less than six, the only way you can add a sixth keeper is via trade. You may not drop a player until after the draft is complete.
If you do not name your Keepers by the deadline, the commish(s) will choose those for you and they will be final. If you post your Keepers after the deadline but before the commish posts, your Keepers will be honored. Typically the commish(s) will start figuring out uncommitted Keepers as soon as the deadline has passed.
All “un-kept” players will go into the draft. A player MUST be in the NBA database in order to be kept.
The only off-season transactions that will be allowed are trades. No free agents may be picked up after the end of the season. Trades of a player for a draft pick are allowed.
VII Prizes
A fine plaque will be engraved and shipped to the winner courtesy of the previous year's winner. The trophy will be yours to proudly display with your other cherished mementos for 1 year. It will be the winner’s responsibility to engrave it and ship it to the winner. There will be an added nominal fee to help cover expenses related to the engraving and shipping of the plaque.
A separate cash prize pool has also been established. It is strictly voluntary. Only those who participate will be eligible for this prize. $15 USD entry must be paid by the season opener. The exact method of prize distribution will vary from year to year depending on participation. We focus payouts so it will NOT be winner take all. Six owners will have a chance to “win something.” Prize pool funds are due by Opening Night.
2017-2018 Payout has six managers paid: 1st $100 2nd $60 3rd $35 4th $25 5th $20 6th $15 Total Payouts is 19 X $15 = $ 285 ($30 to trophy fund and for Draftime costs)
Ineligible for prize pool: PD BB
If any of the non-participants qualify, the prizes will be reallocated by the commissioners. Managers will move up payout position(s) and any remaining funds will go into the trophy fund.
VIII Owners
As commissioners, we reserve the right NOT to extend an invitation to or remove any owner for any reason. Primary reason for being excluded would be abusive behavior (beyond friendly trash talk, harassment), purposeful rules violations (i.e. colluding on a trade), inactivity (i.e. leaving injured players in as starters repeatedly), unresponsive to other owners or commish(s), missing deadlines (i.e. keepers, draft picks, etc.). If an owner is NOT invited back next year. A new owner will be recruited to take over the vacated team in its exact state.

I wish someone had a hotline or red phone for jaydog. I have emailed through the site, through regular email and sent a trade offer to try and start discussions without any response.

Agreed, this league is pretty frustrating. Obviously no one is obligated to make a trade, but rejecting my offer or telling me to get lost would be more appreciated than letting the trade lapse after a week or not responding at all. Makes you wonder how many people are still playing or care when youre lucky to hear back from one in three or four people you reach out to about trade talks. Id like to think that when Im out of contention in the future, Ill still remain active and responsive, out of respect to those then competing.

Well I continue to not be able to get any trades done despite constantly sending offers.
Plenty of guys to mix and match available, looking for #1 3's, #2 a backup center #3 steals...
Pascal Siakam is currently ranked #30 overall. For the season. 24 years old. Only Fosten even kicked the tires and explored it and we didn't quite match (yet?!)
A contender could use guys lIke Millsap, Portis.. Hayward would be better for a long term planner while he gets his legs back (who has Wall? might be a good long term duo). He's still headed into some prime years.

Over the years, this league has been one of the harder ones to trade in, but I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. It just takes really good deals that are really win-win for both managers. But, that can be difficult since managers view their players and others so differently, plus everybody has different immediate and long term goals.
When I used to do redraft leagues every year, I'd make 4-5 trades a season on average, but in this league I'm lucky to make one deal per year. There are a handful of managers I don't bother sending offers to anymore either because of their unresponsiveness or their utter disgust if a trade offer is not hugely beneficial to them, but that's ok. If I have to hear how a player is "top 20" even if they haven't sniffed that kind of value in 2-3 years, then I just move on - no harm no foul. A few other managers are really shrewd and don't like to make deals, so if I approach them it has to be a solid deal that compels them to make a move. I will spend more time researching how it will help their team and then wonder why I am making a deal in the first place.
BTW, for those that might remember, this league used H2H scoring the very first season which I loved and I lobbied for OReb to be added as a differentiator instead of turnovers since I hate negative categories. But many managers didn't like the way the first season played out and thought it was too hard to trade, so it was changed to roto scoring the next year. I was not a fan since I had built my team to win at least 6 of the 9 cats every week, but had to adjust and go to a more balanced approach. You certainly cannot punt more than 1 cat and have any chance to win in roto.

Interest in C.J. McCollum has been heating up. Ive sent an offer out, I have an offer sent to me, and Im negotiating with a third person. If you want him, now is the time to reach out to me. Im looking for a young keeper to go with the rest of my babies. Not super interested in draft picks unless they are early lottery.

I have 4 legit Cs and a glaring hole at F. If you have a surplus of Fs and need a C, hit me up.
Drummond - Would be the toughest for me to trade for obvious reasons. One of the best young bigs in the league.
DJ - Bet on himself taking a one year deal with Dallas and looks like he'll be rewarded handsomely. Career sub 50% FT and this year just under 70% (whoever has worked with him in Dallas should get a cut of that contract).
Okafor - Former lottery pick has been playing like a man possessed lately. Looks like the opportunity and change of scenery has rejuvenated his career. With AD on his way out, the current opportunity appears to be permanent.
Zizic - Future at C for the Cavs.

I've had a good bit of interest in Oladipo, and emailed several of you back already. My preference is to keep him until after the NBA trade deadline next week and decide if I'm going to hold him or deal him similar to my trade of Wall for Derozan. I'm ok downgrading slightly either in age or overall skill/value to stay competitive this year, but if I can manage to maintain my current spot in the rankings, I'd hate to trade him away at 26 before he hits his prime years.
The being said if the right offer comes along with a solid combination of players and/or picks, then I'd be willing to move him sooner.

Down to around the final 1/3 of the year. Looking forward to getting Capela back after surgery. Weathered that storm so far, fairly successfully, although I had to burn my "games played" stash some. Mirotic coming back from various maladies shortly too. His "complete package game" is soooo under the radar. Same goes for Holiday. His Boss-level game goes unnoticed. Also can't wait to see what Bogdanovic can do, absorbing Oladipo's scoring opportunities. Good returns on that so far. Hoping Bridges gets some run as Charlotte wraps up another scrubby season. Finally, someone please tell Jarrett Allen, yeah yer 20 years old, but you can own fools in this game...take more shots. (I love the Nets Center rotation of Allen, Ed Davis and Alan Williams.)

Well, there is no specification of a trade deadline in our rules, and the league is set for No Trade Deadline. This year's ESPN league was restarted from last years league, so I assume it was that way last year.
I play in so many leagues between the three sports, I simply dont remember this one. I don't know how to pull up last year's transactions in ESPN, if it's even possible. So, I can't confirm how it went last year.
Any help?

OK, so I looked at last year's thread and on 27 FEB there was a mention by RSF about a post NBA trade deadline waiver wire trade. I don't understand that one frankly, but its the only clue I have about whether or not we have a trade deadline or we dont. I really need some help here guys so please chime in.

I don't recall if we've had a trade deadline in this league or not, but when we moved from Yahoo to Espn site a few years ago it might have been missed. If we do add one in the future, generally I'd prefer a deadline about 30 days after the NBA trade deadline, so that would have been around March 6th this year. That leaves a little over a month left in the season after the deadline, and would hopefully avoid any questionable late season trading that might occur in the final stretch run.

Is there someplace you can see the "stats you got for me" like there used to be? So disappointed with ESPNs interface this year.
BEAN (69), that was just me being a goober. I dropped a guy to waivers, someone else picked him up, then I wound up picking up their waiver drop. Not a real trade or timing.
I like the idea of a few weeks (30 days) after the actual trade deadline. Or just say March 1st to make it simple.

Ive got three players out for the year (Carter Jr., Bamba and Fultz). As a result its going to be hard to make my minimum games played unless I drop or trade at least one of them for an active player. I have very little interest in trading Carter, but would be open to trading Fultz or Bamba (or even both of them). If anyone is interested please send me an email.

Man rough year for serious injuries to several of my key players. First it was Wall then Oladipo and finally Nurkic. At least I was able to swap Wall for Derozan in a slight downgrade to try and remain in the running, but was destined to drop a few spots after losing Oladipo. Jusuf's injury happened with only 10 games left in the season, but will likely have an impact on next year's availability, so now I have to debate keeping him or trading for a team that is looking to rebuild.

Thanks!
Very fortunate to only have Mirotic have a season full of misc minor injuries, Capela out for a month with thumb surgery and Holiday out for a quarter the season with "The-Pelicans-need-a-higher-draft-pick"-bullshit-itis.
With 4 guys in the top 15 in PER (at injury dates), this squad was rolling. Draft picks didn't *quite* pan out, but that's ok. Having the fortune to have two MVP level guys makes up for mistakes...
Thanks Guru, Bean and Tosh for getting and keeping things straight. Thanks Tosh, Florian (twice) and GO for making trades...I love trades. And thanks for anyone who listened/considered my trade offers, some of which, in retrospect were...uh...crappy. I still believe firmly in Zach Collins!
Lots of good teams coming up (looking hard at meatwads' team) to make the top even tougher. Add in injury comebacks and the league gets better and better.

Bean, thanks for reactivating the league! If there are any openings this year, I know someone who would like to join. He served as my basketball advisor last season offering some trade advice in a co-manager type role, and learned the rules of g20 along the way. My friend knows a lot more about basketball than I do, and it would be cool for him to get his own team someday. Spoiler: It's not Mark Cuban, but he's probably just as smart. Once we get a head count, I'm sure he would be ready to step up if need be. Thanks! Peace.

I've been following the free agent signings, watched the draft, I'm ready to go! Some early thoughts before I go back to baseball...
1. I want to bring up the idea of keeping 7 players, and expanding our roster from 12 to 14. I talked with WG about this last season, but can't recall why I thought it was a good idea. 2. I do think there should be a trade deadline. Unless the league is against it, we can fix that quickly. 3. I'd love to discuss how we can get the activity level up in this league. (maybe increasing the minimums?) I know we can't duplicate baseball, but we can still upgrade. 4. I get the sense the enthusiasm has been decreasing over the years. Coming up with some new and exciting ideas could help. We can always settle on the traditional way if nothing makes sense. 5. I'll write more things as they pop into my head. Anyone else that has ideas, throw them out here for people to consider.

I was the one who reactivated... was trying to see who the heck I had after all those trades and free agency moves.
I don't feel like minimums increase activity at all. I feel like more engaged managers do. Mindlessly rotating players to meet a minimum doesn't increase a players interest but i feel makes it more of a chore.
I feel like LESS keepers would help spread the wealth and shake things up more. FA pool on the shallow side as it is.
If we increased anything I would suggest an Injured List slot for keepers only ala G20 MLB.

GO - I appreciate the response. My main goal is to get a conversation started. I think we can collectively improve the league with some tweaks. Maybe people like it how it is, and I'm fine continuing as is. We haven't talked seriously about shaking things up for several years, so that's all I want to do.
I'm open to moving to 5 keepers as well. I'm open to being able to keep as many as we want. I'm open to having top teams able to keep less. And probably several other cool ideas I don't know about. I just think some things could be changed to improve the experience. I'm not coming at this from a contender or rebuilding mindset, just the overall league. If I knew the answer, I would've said it a long time ago.
I'm not suggesting we increase the minimums so we can mindlessly stream. I despise that aspect of baseball, and I'm happy this league is more set up like a dynasty league. I'd rather reward having quality depth more, if anything.
I completely agree with adding IL spots for keepers. What about having 9-10 active spots every day instead of only 8? Just saying things as they pop in my head. I'm hoping if I keep writing stuff, a random gem will fall out. Or someone smarter than me will get us there.

7 keepers is good for me, but that's not necessarily good for the league. 5 keepers is bad for me but probably better for the league (better lower-end high talent available in redraft).
I'd be for 5 keepers, but not for this year, as I did two deals specifically looking as potential 6th keepers (Bridges and Flinch-err-Fultz). Theres no way I'd have done the Fultz deal with only 5 keepers.
At first blush, I'm not adverse to 4 keepers, but I'd have to think more on it. That might be cutting it close though.
I think the roster sizes are good. Close to "just enough" that there are still viable options no matter where you are in the team-build process.
Enthusiasm...when winning I loved it, when sucking I loved, and of course I love it winning again. :)
Things I like are a "euro-stash" slot like in baseball, but not sure how we could work that here.
