What would everyone say is the biggest "lesson" they learned (about fantasy hoops) this year?

my #1 would have to be to keep at least one trade available at all times, even if you have to save it from the beginning of the year. ..

Anyone else?

Good question Fighting Monk. I learned not to blow some of those early season trades as quickly as I did. Put me in a hole I had to climb out of. Specifically, I'm talking about the first 3-4 weeks.

i agree about the trades. And make sure that if you are making a trade for your friend that you remember to log on under him and not waste trade for your team.

lol wqrtyt. I would have to agree with you, Monk, always keep a trade in reserve!

I'd agree that a trade in reserve is #1.

But I think 2nd is to plan ahead. Instead of looking day to day or week to week, I began to look 4+ weeks ahead. I also tracked the "optimal sell date" for each of my 10 players (IE a day or so before a big gap of no games) Some players had rare sell dates like Shaq, others that were flavor of the week (marion, Oliver, Artest, etc...) had a sell date that had to occur if they had even 1 3-game week because their value would crash. As I mapped out the optimal sell dates, I tried not to pick players so that there were any more than 3 guys for sell in a given 1 week period. that meant that 3 of my trades per week were "spoken for" and one trade per week for an injury or to take advantage of an oppurtunity (like an injured player coming back- Robert pack sucks)

I'd like to say it woked to model perfection each week, but it did enoug that I could work around problems OK.

I also created a watch list for players that I felt were goint to soar in price or performance (both?) and made an "optimal buy date" and tried to match optimal buys w/ optima sells. Nice try in theory!

Lesson #3. Check Banwagon's roster and never buy a guy he does until at least 3 days have past!!! LOL.

All this stategy doesn't work so well in the playoffs, huh?

One thing I found was useful was looking at how "inflated" a player was from his original cost, and then making money accordingly. Like if Odom is down to his original cost, around 3M, then he will be going up soon. Conversely, if he is at 6M, he only has down to go, so maybe I should look at a comparable point production option who's cost is not so inflated.
Another thing I learned is never to buy Lamar "3 of 5 games" Odom.

Rotonews.com, anyone who doesn't know about the site, should.

Also, a great valuable lesson i learned was gaining my cash as fast as i could, you see, during the first few months of play, anyone could be in the lead, you may be sitting with a WWR of 10,000. But, with proper money management, i.e. lots of it, over time you'll be in the diver seat because the players on your roster steadily become better (studs).

Look at the bad teams for your "hot" players, while look at the good teams for those players you look in. Donyell Marshall is a great asset if you follow him day to day and are ready to make changes once he goes cold or is injured, where as you can put Malone or Shaq in your line, and with the consistency of the team around them, you know they are going to produce, stay motivated, and probably stay healthy.

How about avoid the softies (nick V, Lamar etc . . .) at all costs. You want to target stretches where a player plays a lot of games in a small period of time. It seems like da' softies never make it through . . .

But if they do make it through they rack up lots of points, if you have trades go ahead, or if you're feeling adventerus..

I also think it is really useful to seperate your "superstar" players from the rest. I mean, there are only about, umm (let's see, GP, JK, KG, CW, KM, TD, Shaq, Zo) oh 8 superstars, and its pretty easy to look at their schedules and try to get them to flow into another. That way, you have a rough plan to make sure you are maximizes the stretches where the superstars play, and since they (almost by definition) slump or get injured less, you have that much of your plan set. Than you can have about 30-40% of your roster established and you don't have to exert energy following them.
That leads to the other 60-70% of your roster . . . This is where you exert your resources, both time and trades, and try to play the hot player for the hot team. Again, since most of us have other things in life to do, I think it helps to get to know a few players really well, so that you know their tendancies and don't have to search to far. Another thing that helps is reading the message boards, and if you don't have time to find info yourself, just jump on the bandwagon. At worst you'll make money, and at best you'll grab the hot player without spending too much time.

A few quick thoughts in no particular order...

= Print out a schedule
= Read the boards
= Conserve a trade or two
= Become friends with the Sartables
= Buy Shaq
= Take risks if you feel like it, but always have an out (trade)
= Don't waste trades trying to catch the hot, cheapie center
= Make money early, but find a happy balance with your SWP

Stick with those players that you know well, either local players or ones you just know a lot about. That way, you don't get duped when you realize that Cassell pouts or that Big Dog slumps when Cassell is pouting. Or that Darvin Ham will be starting for the rest of the year (though I don't know what you could do with that information).

As a "newbie" last year, I learned a lot about how to play the game. What I learned the most were certain rules.

1. Never get caught without a trade for an injury.
2. Never get caught without two trades for injury.
3. The schedule will lead you to the Promised Land.
4. Follow the masses, as they will show you the money.
5. The Guru and his site is where you will get the most and best info from.
6. The cheapie center of the week will only burn trades.
7. Remember Nelson and the Mavs play whoever and for how long.
8. Check the SW message boards for ideas of what the masses will do.
9. If CNN/SI post their price changes 5 minutes earlier the SW, TRADE, TRADE, TRADE!!!!
10. Repeat numbers 1 and 2.

Points are more important than money. Its always nice to make money, but the only way to win the big prize is to have the most points. So for those of you who think picking up the injured player who's coming back and/or the next money train, think first about who will add to your point total, not your bank account.

But, more money = better players = more points. You have to make money or people with higher roster values will pass you buy with better players.
