0 Subject: Early Schedule Musings

Posted by: Ender

I will post more as I examine the schedule more closely, but here are some early observations:

These teams open up with 4 games in 5 days:
Charlotte
Detroit
Orlando
Philadelphia
Sacramento
Toronto
Washington

Washington rest for 2 days and then pulls another 4 in 5. Detroit rests 3 and pulls another 4 in 5.

Charlotte's Schedule goes ice cold with 3 in 9 after the dense start. Philadelphia post 3 in 10 following the dense start. Toronto has 3 in 7.

More to come...

Here are some teams to avoid at the start of the season:

Chicago: 6 in 14
Cleveland: 6 in 14 (9 in 21 in fact before hitting a 4 in 5)
Golden State: 3 in 8
Indiana: 6 in 15
Miami: 6 in 14
Milwaukee: 6 in 15 (9 in 22)
San Antonio: 3 in 7

There goes my Duncan plan,
switching to either Hill, Webber, or VC.

I would only get Vinsanity if you plan on trading him early. Toronto follows up the 4 in 5 with a 1 in 5.

Ow, maybe save myself a trade and go with Webb.

I dunno on SA. They get 10 in the 1st 18 days of the season. A good pickup is Duncan if you want to save trades for the long haul. After the 17th they are of for 4 days. That's when I'll move him. Do you agree Ender??

Upon deaper examination, San Antonio does open with 8 games in 13 days. I was too short sited with my earlier statement about them.

If you are patient, draft Duncan. If you're not afraid to burn a trade early, draft Webber and move him to Duncan before freeze 11/7.

I will probably do just that on at least one team.

Seems as though things are getting a bit clearer. Things we thought we saw in the beginning appear different now. Plans are coming together though!

Things will become even clearer once we know which players to choose from the teams with dense schedules. Obviously the stars are easy (or at elast we hope), but finding the productive, under $3 million players will be tough until we get closer to tipoff.

allhair allstars - I appreciate it. That's why I like it around here, very good people! You do well yourself. Thanks for your contributions! They don't go unnoticed. :)

Ender - Agreed.

I liked Webber as well but then I saw his 5 days off and 2 games in 11 days in late November... I will save some money and go for G Hill who has a lot of games.

Other teams I like at the start are Houston and Lakers... Also, after Golden State's 3 in 8, they have 11 games in 18 days.

San Antonio has 8 games in first 15 games, not 13 games. Also they only have 13 games in first 28 days.

I stand corrected AGAIN, I forgot the to count the 2 off days in the first 5 days. Sheesh. It's a good thing the season hasn't started yet! :-)

FWIW, I went through and ranked each team's schedule (independent of players or prices, etc.), and came up with the following list. I looked at the schedule through the end of the year, but placed a much heavier emphasis on the first few weeks. My goal is to draft players I won't feel compelled to trade for AT LEAST the first 2-4 weeks of the season for mere schedule considerations. There will be enough suprises and trades based on performance, so I'm trying to reserve my trades for that. Also, there's the whole issue of the masses selecting players from the top SWP list, not SWP/G.

Teams I would prefer to draft from (in preferential order):
Orlando, Washington, Portland, Seattle, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas, Clippers, Lakers, Knicks

Teams I might also draft from:
Detroit, Atlanta, Sacramento, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Denver, Minnesota

Teams I will probably avoid unless there's a WAY underpriced player:
Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago, Utah, Miami, Golden State, New Jersey, Boston, Milwaukee, Indiana, Cleveland

Some of these bottom teams have decent schedules once you get past the first week or two... so I will prefer to trade into players on these teams instead of draft them. Also, at the lower end of the spectrum (sub $2-million), schedule has less impact upon my decisions, and I'm thus more willing to draft from the bottom pool.

That said, the fact that Indiana and Cleveland have the worst starting schedules (IMHO) influences my 2nd center spot heavily. O'Neal, Mihm, and Ilgauskas were all on my radar, but I might hold off on these guys for a couple weeks unless one of them really lights it up in the preseason and looks like an incredible buy (O'Neal being the most likely). So I'll be keeping my eye on some alternatives (J. White, M. Moore) through the preseason as well.

Uh, i think i'd avoid Hill at the opening of the season. He's saying that his ankle is still kinda sore and that he may not be @ 100% the entire season. Personally, i'd pick up Duncan and hold him for his stretch of games. Why use a trade if you can save it? There'll be plenty of other opportunities down the season.

Assuming most of these responses pertain to SmallWorld Hoops....has anyone checked "officially" with SmallWorld as to what day we get trades?

I have been going over the schedule but realized that I can't really plan things out ( at least beyond 2 or 3 weeks ) until I know what day I get trades.

Assuming they do it like the past seasons trades will be given after roster freeze on the opening day - and then again a week later.

Any computer/excel experts want to bust out a games per week schedule like allhair allstars did last year? :-)

Example of aa's last season schedule http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/mb/hoop/3374.shtml?986661129

Man, I can't wait for hoops to start up.

Yeah I can't wait for basketball to start either especially since an invalid roster ended my chances in MS Baseball. From what I can tell it seems like Boston, Cleveland, Golden State, and Indiana have the most games. Has anyone else checked?

Ender, Doug:
I cannot fathom why you guys wouldn't want Indiana to begin the season!
They are one of the few teams with NO extended streak of inactivity over the first month of the season and play 16 games between 10/30 and 11/26. I like the Pacers a lot and am seriously thinking about both Harrington and Baby O for my A team.

Everyone is thinking in terms of days...to get more long holds and saving trades you should go for gms per wk instead of gms in a number of days. So in reality GS and IND have really good schedule to start, along with some other teams.

I have Al Harrington, Larry Hughes, and Antawn Jamision off of those 2 teams spread throughout my 2 pay teams and 1 free team.

I disagree it is days, not weeks, particularly if you are tying yourself to trade weeks. The schedule is richer and deeper than that. Look long and hard. As an example, two 3 game weeks could really be a boon if the first 3 are at the end of one week and the next 3 are at the start of the next, ditto for a 3-4-3 stretch over 3 weeks.
