0 Subject: Using the Sortables

I am new to basketball, and also to smallworld. I have found the the Sortable stats on Rotoguru can be a great help toward making the correct moves. What I was wondering is, how does everybody use them? Personally, I usually use the filters at the bottom and make them tell me the projected points for players over the next 2-3 weeks (depending on # of trades), and I tell it to use the points over the last 15 days to tell me who's hot. I was just wondering if anybody had a different method of using this thing, and what it is. Thanks a lot.

BZ - Welcome.

You are on the right track. The great thing about Guru's sortables is that you can tweak to your heart's content.

Personally, I rarely use the entire YTD averages when making decisions - you intuition is correct that a 15-day sort is better. Sometimes I'll use the 7-day sort as well. The projections are great, saving you the time of doing some of those calculations by hand.

The assimilator is a great tool to tweak your roster and make sure that projected moves fit into your current roster value.

Good luck.

first of all, they're called "sartables". So get that straight!

;)

The way I use them is this:
-elimate players with less than 1 gm played over the last 7 days.
-Use 15 days SWP/G Avgs
-Project over the next 7 days.

And I do that pretty much every day and its very helpful!!!!!

J, I've been wondering about this for a while, maybe you can clear it up:

Is it "sartAbles" or "sartIbles"?

Thank you.

I am sure I am in the minority but I don't use them for projections. I use them mainly for average swp per game, swp/g/mil (bang for buck) and the player's recent history in reaching his swp/game average.

They are invaluable regardless of how they are used.

I use them quite a bit for advance planning, as well.

For example, look at your roster and see who has weak spots coming up in the schedule. Let me use Baron Davis as a current example. Starting 12/10, he plays only 3 games over a 10 day span. (I find the 4 week schedule grids most helpful in looking at long term schedule patterns. I always have a paper printout next to my computer.)

That begs the question as to whether there are reasonable swap oppotunities during that 10 day period. The sartibles easily allow you to look at projected points for the 10 days starting 12/10. Using today's 15-day averages, Baron Davis ranks only 23rd in projected points during that period (and that assumes a 46 SWP/G average, which may be on the aggressive side). It's easy to scan down the listing to see what guards have better projections with similar prices. Several teams play 6 games during that span. On the other hand, if you believe the 46 SWP/G average for Davis, it's hard to find others in his price range that have a much higher projection (although Mark Jackson certainly looks interesting). This is where the brain has to kick in, thinking about the plausible variation in the projected values, and also thinking about possibilities to combine other players into a trade strategy. The sartibles are really just the first step in highlighting the most likely options.

I think either "sartable" or "sartible" is OK, but I tend to use "sartible", since it is more misspelled.

I also use the price filter, to show players that are in the price range I can do something about, specially when I only have 1 trade left, that way I won't start thinking about what if scenarios...

When you say you're new to Basketball what do you mean? where are you from?

Guru, I just used the "sartibles" for the exact scenario you described - Baron Davis for a ten day period starting on 12/10.

To expand on your info, I used it two ways - 1) Looking for Total Points during the time frame from all available guards; 2) Looking for Total Points during that time frame for the guards valued at Davis + cash (actually, I did this for a little higher, assuming Davis might see some gains for his upcoming 4 in 5).

Now, the top three guards it came up with are Kidd, Kobe and Mark Jackson, with Nash slightly behind. The additional projected SWPs range from +140 (Kidd) to +82 (Jackson). Is this worth two trades (assuming you move back into Davis)? That is for each manager to decide.

With a meager piggy click left in my coffers, I obviously am not able to do the straight Davis>Kidd move, SO I had to come up with something different. I looked at the rest of my line-up, hoping to find another player with the same light schedule for approximately the same duration. BINGO! Rashard Lewis also has only three games during that time frame. So, here's where a little creativity comes in...

I went to the sartibles once again, but this time looking for both guards AND forwards (thanks for providing that option, Guru) for the same ten days. Now I have several different combinations of players I can consider.

While none of the above methods will tell you who will end up providing decent profit, it can give you a handle on approximately how many additional SWP you can get out of making these moves. Also, all these assumptions are that you move either back into your original player or to somebody else.

Thanks for all your input.

DR- Whne I said I was new to basketball, I meant I had never followed the
NBA before. I knew of only the big name players like Shaq, Kobe, Webber,
Malone...etc. I using Smallworld as an attempt to get into hockey and
Basketball, as in I would like to follow the sport, but I also ahve a lot of fun
with Smallworld games competeing with my friends. I had a horrible
Baseball season, and then I found this site toward the end of the year and
I dramatically improved. I found the most useful feature in baseball to be
the Sortables, but they were far less complicated and had fewer options. I
actually haven't found a use for the assimilator yet, so I could also use
some advice there.

Also - How did they become known as the "sartibles" or "sartables" or
whatever?

Someone made a typo one day (evidently a slow day...), and the term just caught on.

I believe it was Dan the Bengal Man who made the initial error. Not sure who is most responsible for keeping it alive but KB8ers is among them.

Now, can we do something similar with the assimilator, being as this is also my first full year using this site and Smallworld and I haven't used the Assimilator much and don't know when/how to get the most of it.

DR,
I use the Assimilator to track my whole roster. Let's say you have a couple of what if scenarios with your roster, you can put all of those into the Assimilator and see point projections for all of your roster slots. It gives you a good estimate of how many SWPs you will earn in 10 days. You can track many rosters at a time!

Isn't it too early to do that? when is the best time to trust the assimilator? can you change projections based on YTD/last 15, or is it set at one value?

DR,

I am pretty sure that the Assimilator is based on YTD averages. I do not believe that you can change that. Yes, it is a little early right now to rely on SWP/G data, but it is a start to see how your line-up may produce.

Thanks Vol, I don't see many people thanking in here, I don't know if it's just not to make threads too long. Anyways, I'll be looking at the assimilator closer as the season progresses.

I have suggested that we be able to change some of the key assumptions in the Assimilator as that would allow us to customize our own projections such as SWP/G (not just ytd) and enrich the utility of the tool. I think we need to keep clicking ads to make these kind of enhancements economic! Click, click.

DR-you can also play around with your roster with the assimilator. Stick your team in, assimilate, then insert your cash left over. You can move people around your whole roster, knowing the cash you have, before pulling the trigger on trades.

Give it a try-its a fascinating tool.

By the way, I would like to commend BZ for coming to the forum and using the TOOLS of rotoguru.com vs. just blindly posting to the boards. BZ, the Guru set up his site to assist managers in making THEIR management decisions, not to make decisions for you. As the Forum Standards I'm sure mention (haven't read 'em in a while), the types of questions that the forum likes to see are well thought out questions where one's idea/strategy is outlined, the rationale behind it, and the question/request for opinion - not, "here's my team, what should I do?" type questions.

I wish more new Gurupies used the tools and adhered to the Forum Standards as quickly as you have. Kudos.

Thank you Species. And Thank you to everyone else who has offered me
help. This site is wonderful, and has helped me along my way to learning
about basketball, while having fun with smallworld at the same time. There
are great assets such as the sartibles, daily blurbs, and this forum, and
people can get help from others who really know what they're talking about.
I'm glad this thread was rated so high, as it has been really helpful to me
and hopefully others. Thanks again for everyone's help.

I just started using the sartibles recently. Though I have come to rely very much on the assimilator and 4 week sched, the sartibles are new to me.

I did find them helpful in finding a few replacements as some players really jump out that you may have overlooked.
