It begins! A shame that, but I think we all see their point.

I wonder if they are going to cut off the e-mails they send for free? Probably.

They are doubling any voluntary donation you sent in prior to their announcement and putting it towards a subscription. I don't think too many donations were received, however, as I got a personal email thanking me. And if there were lots of donations, this move would be unnecessary.

It's a shame, but I completely understand. They put a huge amount of work into their site, and have started offering free emailed updates for specific players of particularly interest to you, as well as costumizable "my rotowire" pages with the details you are interested in. Invaluable.

They do have competition, however. Both TSN and CBSsportsline are competitive and free, though their content is not quite to the depth, reliability and humor you obtain at rotowire.

Personally, I am wondering if they are pricing themselves out of the market, given the free competition. Maybe $2-$3 month would have been easier to swallow and justify. I'll have to ponder whether to pony up after my freebie runs out in march.

Biliruben- I agree i think they have overpriced themselves. Actually with Sandbox gone and almost all decent sites now requiring payment I think quite a lot of the free fantasy sites, both advice and info, will be dropping out. I expect interest in fantasy sports as a whole may decline. I don't mind paying for quality like TSN but I really prefer the draft games to salary cap games and as far as I am concerned I can't even find a decent pay draft site.

is anybody really gonna sign in for this? $60 sims a little too much for me... their information is not a must have, they are making a big mistake.

At first blush, the price seemed a little steep, but when I realized that I access their site multiple times every day, it isn't unreasonable.

However, I wonder how many will pay when there are free alternatives around? Direct competitors include RotoTimes.com and RotoWorld.com, both of which are still free. Of course, with RotoWire taking the plunge, those sites may soon also follow suit.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the George cancelled a Dr. appointment and was still charged, so when the Dr. postponed the next appointment he tried to charge them :)

On another note, I am considering charging $0.25 a post if you want to read the drivel I routinely post ;)

RotoWire player links in the sartibles and player pages now point to the corresponding page at RotoWorld.com.

In football, I relinked to the player pages at fantasy.sportingnews.com (not the game site, but the sports information site), but for some reason, they don't have their corresponding NBA players pages set up yet. So RotoWorld seemed like a good alternative - at least as long as it is free (who knows?)

If/when http://fantasy.sportingnews.com adds an NBA section (I note that they also don't provide this for hockey, so maybe they only do it for baseball and football!?! ), I'll probably switch over, as they also provided some statistical data to go with the latest news.

Definly 60$ is too much for me.
I payed 20$ to subscribe 3 teams for ultimate hoops, beacuse or I pay or I can't play.
But why I have to pay much more for service I can get for free?
Even if rotoworld and rototimes will follow rotowire strategy, I can always find informations in other sports sites.

GURU - "Fantasy sports can provide a tremendous learning opportunity, encompassing planning and budgeting, statistical analysis, and critical thought. But fewer and fewer young people will get hooked if you have to pay to play"
That's absolutely right what you have said. I think fantasy game must be teached in schools!

In clach's defense, if I recall correctly he is an international and "to teach" is an irregular verb in the past tense...

I thought of that after I make the quick retort.

If so, clach is excused. But lousy grammar from locals is still pretty rampant around here.

Forgive me for grammar. I'm italian and all the night (is night here) speaking in spanish, so a litle confused.

The change to a pay system is understandable but with a recession hitting us all it is hard to start coughing up money for something that you can find elsewhere for free, if you look around.

I do think that $10US is reasonable for a season of fantasy Basketball but $60US a season is a little high for anyone but the diehard or overly weathly fantasy sports fans.

Wow...$60. I am afraid price may be too high for the average fantasy player.

I dunno. I am thinking about going to work today and just donating my time...not getting paid for the work I do. My clients really like the tax services I provide them, but if I actually charged them (so that I could put milk on the table for my kids) they would go elsewhere, like to IRS, and obtain free advice.

What is that old line? Free advice is worth what it costs. Just because we receive a value for free for a period of time does not mean that we have a birthright to continue to receive that value for free. This is a basic capitalistic concept.

By the way....have you made YOUR DONATION to the Guru this month?
