0 Subject: ATTN: Guru.. Idea for permanent record of results

Guru, I posted this in forum developments, but not sure how often you (ar anyone gets there)....

Since the site is many years old and hopefully will continue for many more years....

Idea: Create a forum to file FINAL standings for each sport that are kept throughtout the years. For example, post after post after post keeps piling up in the standings forums day by day until last years FINAL standings falls off page 12 (or whatever it is). The idea would be to use the existing forums for standings as is, but when the season is over, J, or Allhair Allstars, or Philflyboy or Dr Doom or whoever can prepare a FINAL season total standings w/ all YTD data. When FINAL standings are done, the preparer could post them there for permanent viewing, Maybe you could create a password required for them to post to that particular forum or they could send you the data to post. It wouldn't be for others to post to.

I guess the basics of the idea is to provide a place for your regular customers to refer to about past performance year after year in one organized locale. I find it interesting to back and look at standings over the past 2-3 years and recall the battles down the stretch between old and new Gurupies.

I'll add a thought - would it be possible to add year indicators on posts? It might not be a huge deal, but there have been several occasions in the past when old threads (I'm talking reallly old) have been butted up and potentially caused some confusion. Just something I've been mulling...

aa - I think that would be useful, but I believe those that can't figure out that the topic pertains to last year's data / teams / players / schedule would not "notice" the date. It seems those that get confused aren't real good at picking up the details.

Maybe it's a good idea, maybe not. Just running it up the flag pole.

As far as your idea, I like it. Maybe couple it with the HOF. I think it would be simple enough for Guru (or an assigned moderator) to simply move the threads in question to the location in question. There aren't that many of them around. Also, it would be cool if some of the older standings could be revisited. I think there are some on the old board, as well as the ones Guru used to run.

rfs what kind of standings will be included? is only the FS/MS main gurupie standnigs, or also things like 500k, OTO, boat race and pick'ems?

tduncan,

I suppose that's up to Guru, but my thought is that all standings should be included if someone took time to prepare them all year long and many Gurupies took time to play them all year long:

Full season
Mid season
OTO
500K
LRV
Boat race
Battle of ther Ages
Tag team

Could also include major individual divisions such as:

rotoguru.com
belly
SWO
guranimals

Since it's only 1 thread per division per year, a few pages could encompass sevral year's results.

BTW, I mighttake a moment to say thanks to Guru for an already great site. I hope this is viewed a suggestions to make it better of the long run as opposed a whine for more for free. ;)

Adding the year to the post date is probably a good idea, and one that I've thought of before. It's usually obvious, but as years go by, it's still a good idea. And probably simple to add.

The central location for standings is also a good idea. That will take a little more setup, however, as I don't yet have a convenient way to move threads from one forum to another. In this case, a simple copying might be fine, since there would be no need to provide for continuation of posting activity.

Let me put that on "to do" list. Feel free to remind me if you don't see any evidence of progress in the next month.

And I guess I see no reason why the "goofy games" (LRV, OTO, 500K, etc) couldn't be included.

Year added to date.

Another question. The forum currently uses the Central Time Zone. This is for a couple of reasons:
  1. When I first set up the forum, the (shared) server was actually located in the central time zone, so that's what the internal clock already used, and
  2. The Small World server was also (apparently) in the central time zone, and they always referred to freeze times in CST.
But TSN no longer refers to Central Time, and since this is a dedicated server, I can set it to any time zone I want to. (I could also programatically alter the time setting, but setting the server clock is the simpler approach). As such, would it make sense to convert the server to Eastern Time? That would seem to conform to the way times are reported on most other sites - and I assume the western Gurupies are more used to doing a 3-hour time adjustment (than a 2-hour shift). Overseas Gurupies will just have to learn a new adjustment, although with daylight savings time ending this weekend, they might have to re-adjust anyway.

Unless I hear material objections, I'll probably implement that shortly.

I live overseas, the CST time thing is constantly confusing me. at least for me it will be much easier if the time on this boards will be ET.

another time question: do you know when the US is changing to winter clock? where I live the change allready have been made, and I lost a couple of querters of football because of that... I don't want it to happen again when the US changes their clock.

tduncan, the time change is 10/28/01 (in the early AM hours), so roster freeze for that w/e will be changed.

At least this time, the time changes pushes everything back. So you won't get caught early by surprise.

The only thing I notice is that we lose a little table space with the addition of the year. Otherwise, great!
