0 Subject: The Gurupie Collaborative Efforts

Posted by: RecycledSpinalFluid
- [21446223] Wed, Nov 07, 2001, 10:20

To me, a vital thing to being a Gurupie is the sharing of knowledge and tools. The most obvious tools are the great stuff supplied by Guru, himself, such as the Sortable Stats (sartibles), Sched-o-matic and Assimilator.

Other tools would be stuff like your favorite stat sight or website where you get great "inside" info (player updates), things like that.

Lets not forget any spreadsheets or Applications you have or have written. The more tools the better.

Show 'em if you got 'em.

In keeping with the sharing knowledge idea, here are a couple of spreadsheets I have developed for Stallworld Hoops 2001-2002.

The ground rules for my stuff:
1.) I designed these in Excel 97, so that is all that I care they work in. If they work in other newer versions, great, let others know, but I won't be modifying it to do so. If you do modify it to work in other versions, supply it to others. Kind of an open source rule.

2.) If you use the thread maker parts, when posting, please select YES (for HTML table input) before clicking . This will save you many, many head aches.

3.) If something is broke, let us know here, and maybe it will be fixed, sometime. Possibly. Some days/weeks are better than others. Be sure to post the OS you are using, the Excel version (just to be sure) and the EXACT error message. That will make it a little easier to troubleshoot.

NBA_0102_Pricemovers_0.04.zip: This is a spreadsheet to pull in the daily PriceMovers for posting on the boards. It makes a fairly nice (IMO) table with links to Guru's player pages, as well as RotoWorld's player pages.

NBA_0102_DivTracker_v0.03.zip: This is a spreadsheet designed to track team information that is available on the Frozen Rosters. Could be used for tracking just your teams or your division's teams, etc.

Good Luck...

I won't plug the ESPN free (or pay) games or any sortable stats, since you've probably seen most of what is out there, but I did want to alert people to the "correspondents" sections at ESPN Fantasy Games. These people post twice a week with in-depth fantasy articles about every team in every sport. They aren't professionals, and their work is geared towards the ESPN pay games, but they often provide some local insight.

ESPN Hockey Correspondents

ESPN Hoops Correspondents

ESPN Football Correspondents

ESPN Baseball Correspondents

Additionally, there are some pretty cool new features for ESPN Insider, including Power Picks and Inside The Game. Power Picks was invaluable down the stretch in baseball, since it told me the best matchup each day based on a pretty accurate formula. If you have an insider account, here's a link to ESPN NFL Power Picks. ESPN's fantasy coverage is at http://games.espn.go.com.

Also, if you're looking for All Time baseball stats, I've found that www.baseball-reference.com has the best stuff and a nice layout (albeit a little basic).

RSF, I'm running Excel 97 on Windows NT Service Pack 6, and when I run the division tracker I get no player on every position of every team. Any particular reason, is this part supposed to work?

DR Stars, forgot to note about DivTracker...

If you run it before the freeze (and after midnight of the day before a freeze) there is a problem (easily corrected). Just enter the day before's date. For example, it is 11/7/01 at 8 AM. I would enter 11/6/01 as the date to run. If it is 11/7/01 1 PM, then you enter 11/7/01. The spreadsheet calculates the "table_id" based off of this date. So basicly enter the date you want to see frozen roster of.

Make sense?

I know I fixed that in one version or another. I'll have to fix it later and upload again.

Thanks.

On the pricemovers, I get a problem and it points to this line of code:
'Done Reading Data, now close active workbook (the SW team page)
Workbooks(URLtoOpen).Close

something about an index, error 9

One thing I have found with running RSF's spreadsheets: Do not look at your own SW teams while it is running. It seems to jump out of its download mode and gives an error. Other than that I have been using his spreadsheets for some time and they are great!!! Thanks RSF for all your help and your willingness to share your "gifts" with us.

Along the same lines as philflyboy says, it is best to not surf at all while retrieving data with the spreadsheets. Excel 97 is a temperamental beast.

Great One, on the first sheet in the "GatherInfo" page, hover your mouse over Cell A1. The rest is fairly self-explanatory.

RSF:

First I would like to thank you for the division tracker. In the past, I would just check each team and calculate their points(tedious process).

However, since it is a zip file, do I need to unzip it? If so, how do I? Once I have downloaded it, how do I open it? If you or someone could give a little help, I would be thankful.

Thanks,
Justin

Yes, you have to unzip it. Likely you have a program on your machine that does this such as winzip.exe
pkunzip.exe

If not you can download them for free off the net - just search and you will find, I am sure.

After you unzip it, then just click on the file divtrack.xls (or whatever it is - I have never used this particular beast), and it should automatically open up in excel. If you don't have excel, disregard all of the above and start clicking and adding again. ;)

Hope this is helpful.

I'm using Excel 2000 on Win ME and I got the same error as DR Stars did while running the pricemovers, as noted in post 8. This was while running Step 1 of the spreadsheet.

Well, i'm kinda into programming myself, but since RFS is the king at these things i don't know what else to create. I just made a really basic calculator (http://software.themainclick.com)

So if anyone has any idea of a tool that could be handy, just drop a line.

Here's one of my old favourites. The roster optimizer. You can download it here (post 9).

rostersolver by guru

Just us the first 200 players from the sortables and paste them in an excel file (paste special, text) then go to 'text to columns' to sort the date. Then paste these data (remove the unnecessary columns) in to the solver sheet.

Good luck

Good luck.

With the recent passing of some artificial barriers, arbitrary chosen in my head (200 total Gurupies and $10K in contributions), I figure now is as good as any to release the SWP calculator.

NBA_SWP_0102_0.14_lite.zip: This is a "Lite" version of the SWP calculator. The only thing that makes it "Lite" is that it does not contain the code to create the threads to post the daily "SWP" stuff. It does calculate all the SWPs that same as the "Full" version.

All the same rules apply to this spreadsheet that have applied to the rest of the spreadsheets in this thread from me.

Thanks RSF.

One question for others: does it work in Excel 2000. I just ran it and got nothing. It could be I got nothing because:

1) it ran it on boxscores of today which don't exist
2) it is not compatible with 2000
3) i am an idiot (a former Art Award Winner)

any help would be great. And thanks RSF.

I just tried the pricemovers in excel 2000. I got the same error as DR Stars. All you have to do is hit debug. Once it points you to the code lines that have a problem (the one on closing the active url). Just delete it. Then rerun the macro. Also, make sure stallworld is not open in your IE.
The div tracker also works in excel 2000, as well as the lite version of the calculator.
Let me know if it worked guys.

RSF,
I'm running the Free Game Division Tracker on my WIN ME/Excel 2000 system and No Player is coming up on all of the 5 player positions. I'm just curious if anybody else is using this and having this problem, or if you know a solution to this RSF. Thanks for the help and all the hard work put forth on these.

Simple solution (sorta):

In the macro code for the getFrozenRostersURL function the "startDate="somedate needs to be changed to "startDate=01/17/2002". The startDate needs to be updated in the PayGame version too, to "startDate=12/30/2002".

Also, for the SWP thing, if you run it once, during games, the whole spreadsheet needs to be closed and reopened due to Excel caching the loaded URL into memory and just recalling the previous (nonupdated) web page if you don't. Silly Microsloth.

Logic is pretty simple. The Frozen Roster "table_id" is calculated off of the difference from today's date and the StartDate ( + 1 more for grins).

I actually need to add a "StartDate" field in the "Setup" worksheet. Would make the modification a whole lot more user friendly. Maybe next release. Or for the baseball stuff.

Here is a spreadsheet that I created to help me int he Non-Ultimate Fantasy Hoops League. I also have a philosphy for trying to judge who will be the big price mover in the Non Ultimate league. IF ANYONE knows of a good way to tell what the Tuesday price changes might be prior then pleaselet me know I am trying to sell and Buy Monday to gain the most on all players..But there is not a Chat or Forum for that league...Much harder to tell who is going to be the major price movers Plus they do not play the Games per week trend as much as this league.

Digging up an old thread.. Probably most of the links above don't work anymore, so maybe we could put some new ones to help each other.

Here are the sites I visit often for hoops info, most of them daily :

* Rotoworld : The Ultimate Resource for Fantasy Hoops, at least for free sites, never tried the paying ones. And they're quite funny sometimes in their commentary.

* InsideHoops Media Links : A really useful resource when you're looking for the insider info that won't make it to the mainstream media. My main source when it comes to injury and playing time info.

* NBA Forum Madness : Lists a lot of forums for every NBA team. Quite useful when you're looking for fresh news, like when people hear on radio that Iverson won't play tonight, you'll find it on forums before it makes it to newspapers and general sites.

* RealGM Forums : The Bulls, Raptors, and Knicks forums are really quite good. If you're looking for up-to-the-minute insider info on these teams, this is the place to go to.

* HoopsHype Rumor Mill : They browse a lot of sites and newspapers to gather all the useful info into one place. Quite informative, updated several times a day.

* BasketballBoards Forums : Their General NBA forum is possibly the best one I've seen, lots of informed people there, and interesting topics being debated. Their Bulls and Blazers forums are good too.

* SportSpyder : Quite cool. I go there usually in last resort, when I can't find the info I'm looking for anywhere else. Too bad it's not always updated very fast.

We have all used this site to assemble our teams and most have gotten a jump on the competition because of the info/tools here.

Well, I was just looking at the Gurupatrons again and Guru is on pace to LOSE money just in operations, not to mentions his time.

Costs to maintain the site with its current capabilities, features, and game prizes are currently running at around $7,000 annually. In addition, I devote significant personal time and effort to producing the site, for which I am paid zilch.
