0 Subject: A proposal ... the Art Jr. award

Posted by: James K Polk

As many members of this forum, both new and old, seem to be struggling with the dropoff in its traditional communal spirit, I'd like to present an idea I hope might help, at least a little.

To start off, some background: Anyone who's been around the baseball boards is surely familiar with the Guru Jr. award. For those of you who aren't, it's simply an honorary title, bestowed by popular election on someone who "shows sign of Guru-like tendencies, which include but are not limited to statistical support, answering questions, and just being all-around good for the prosperity of this forum. The nominee can also show a sense of humor that makes this forum more enjoyable during hard times." Each Guru Jr. wears the crown for a week; if I were elected, for example, I would spend the week posting under "James K Polk, Guru Jr." At the end of that time, the person opens up voting and passes the torch to the next honoree.

The tradition lost a little steam toward the end of last baseball season, but traditionally it's one of the more popular things on that board. A good way to have some fun and honor some of the people that volunteer their time and effort at this site.

The basketball board has never had a "Guru Jr." award, but has traditionally run the camaraderie-building "Insomniac Pub," a late-night OT thread for discussing beer, everything, and beer. Also a lot of fun, and it was great to see it open up and get hopping last night.

But what I'm proposing for the basketball boards is something more: a new award, one similar in some ways to Guru Jr., but with a completely different set of criteria. Hopefully it would be one that will remind that it's good to laugh at ourselves.

Ever since The Wanderer's classic thread, we've all had fun riffing on "Art" this and "Art" that. However, for those of us who actually picked up Art Glover after his big game, the experience has not been nearly as much fun. To combine these two themes, I hereby propose:

The Art Jr. Award, designed to honor the week's most boneheaded move by a gurupie.

As I see it, the only people eligible for this award would be those who nominate themselves. If you do something stupid, kick yourself for an acceptable period of time, then dust yourself off and revel in the fact that we've all been there before. Fantasy basketball has a way of reminding everyone that pride goeth before a nasty, nasty fall.

However, this award should not be limited simply to fantasy basketball moves. To expand the camaraderie that many of us love so much about these boards, we ought to include boneheaded real-life decisions too. For example, if you headed to the can this morning and discovered the empty TP roll 30 seconds too late, you might be Art Jr. material. If you turned in a piece of crap term paper because you spent too much time on the message boards, you might be Art Jr. Or if your wife/girlfriend asked you if she looked fat in a pair of jeans and you even looked at her before answering, you might be Art Jr.

Of course, if you traded DC > Stromile Swift just in time for 4 DNPs, you also might be Art Jr. Which is part of the reason I will proudly wear the mantle for a week, to promote the proposed award. I suppose I'm also deserving of the award simply for throwing out this idea, because maybe it will bomb. But I submit, if everyone thinks the award is stupid, doesn't that just make me the quintessential Art Jr.? :)

Anyhow, feel free to comment on the Art Jr. concept in this thread. I envision it as a weekly award, with a nomination thread opened up on Thursdays and a voting/coronation thread on Fridays. If there's much of a response, I'll open up a nomination thread next Thursday and we'll get rolling.

Few weeks ago, I traded AK47 just one day before his huge +40 SWP game for E-Rob. 2 days later----well, we all know what happened to Erob.

I think it's a great idea, Prez. I'm all for it. Maybe I can win it sometime...wait, that's something I don't want to win. Well, maybe I won't win it sometime. Er...never mind. But it's a good idea.

Gosh, after 3 now, pushin 4, the paper that I am wrting is going nowhere.

I guess that I'll drop in here. Boneheaded b-ball plays...nothing that really stands out, yet...but I'm no genius at this stuff.

Oh, and I had another #2 problem a while back.

Smallwhirled, until the end w/ Mentors' post, that is the funniest thread I have ever read on these boards. Even better than the Nickname thread or the ugly thread. I really got a god laugh out of that one. Thanks for helping out my late-night studying spirit.

Drunk girls, please, leave me alone....nah I can't do that to my roomate, he's trying to work his magic. ;)

I think Ender's initial post "Who does #2 work for" is the funniest thing I have seen lately. Right up there with KB's picture of Popeye Jones at the bottomof the ugliest player thread. Hilarious! Good luck with the paper.

I don't know where this quite fits in. Here maybe, but I nominate an honorary Art Jr. award to the mop boy at the Hawks game last night. Anyone who can make me spray OJ all over my sports page deserves an award.

Why didn't I see anything about this? Oh yeah, we talked about it in the pub. Forgive my lack of memory. Great idea Mr. Pres……or bad one……I'll reserve judgement. ;)

BTW, anyone else see "Art" and think of Art Vandale'?

I'm all for this award, it's not something you shoot for, but invariably you'll have a good chance of getting it though the season.

Smallwhirled, I guess your #2 problem wins the honorary lifetime Art Jr. Award, I had to call my girlfriend to laugh freely on the phone while reading it, I didn't want people at work to think I'm crazy for laughing so hard at the computer screen...

Is it worthy for lifetime enshrinement? I can't answer that....It was horrible though. Not only was I in pain for me knee, but thoughts of the dreaded "E" were just bouncing off my brain cells.

J,
I've been laying low on that topic. I'm not sure how settled I am having an award for birdbrain moves with the same name as my own attached to it. Then again, it's probably very appropriate... :-P

Great idea, Mr. Prez.
When Nazr's sked went good a while back I picked him up, held him through thin (there was no thick), then dumped him Tuesday. He has since proceeded to dominate his category.
Art,Jr. material, indeed!!

In last week, my petardina held Nazr just in his horrible streak, sold Al HArrington the day he had 37 Tsn and Bought Franchise the day he get injured.
Is it enough?

I demand to share in the DC=>Swift Boner Move of the Week. Luckily I turned Stromile into Duncan this week, but it sure didn't help before that with no trades.

This may not give me the weekly Art award, however it probably will give me several high fives from the die hard b-ball fellas. Anyway i was watching the hornets game and rooting for my boyz davis and nailon and the freakin ole lady stands in front of the tube buck assed naked telling me that she wants me now. Well based on this post im sure yall know what i told her. I told her to get the hell away from the big screen because i HAD to watch davis rack up some serious TSNP since im the only one in my league that has him and nailon.

did you read my recently BUTT'd You Might be a Gurupie If thread...

I started it when A YEAR AGO i was procrastinating writing a paper by checking boxscores and the Action thread... well someone BUTTs it up a year later... and guess what I was doing while I was reading it over again? checking boxscores and reading the action thread when I was supposed to be writing a paper... some things never change! now thats funny.

I believe that I may have had the very first first bonehead move of the year. I had R.Patterson on my opening night roster only to find out that he had a 5 game suspension retroactive from last season and the way this game works out sometimes, you have to make 2 trades to get rid of one player so exactly 12 hours into the season, I had already burned two trades! I have since wiped the egg off my face and have rebounded rather nicely but my ass-nine opening night error should surely qualify me as the innaugural Art Jr. recipient.

This should be called the opposite of the Art Jr. award:

I was advised by about 10 gurupies to not trade Barry -> Baron Davis on Wednesday...haha, I WIN!

LoL, just hope he keeps it up (knock on wood).

Looks like there might be some interest here, so I'll start posting under "J K Polk, Art Jr." on this board for a while. Some of the self-nominations in here look pretty good -- I'll open up an official nomination thread next week.

I'm now thinking of this sked: Wednesday nominations, Thursday voting thread, Friday coronation. I'll write up a little blurb on the qualifications and responsibilities of the Art Jr., a la the traditional copy-and-paste Guru Jr. blurb. I'll keep it pretty simple, but if anyone has any ideas, feel free to post.
