0 Subject: Suggestions on how to draft for Roto league?

Okay all....I joined a recently created Live-Draft Roto league in the CBS Sportsline Fantasy BBall league. In terms of scoring, it is done based on your standing "stat-wise" in each respective catagory:

FG%
FT%
3-ptrs
Total Points
Blocks
Rebounds
Steals
Assists

You get 12 points if you come in first for that catagory, 11 points if you come in second, 10 pts if you come in third...and so on and so on.

Since this is the first time that I have played in a Rotosserie league, I am going to tap the vast Fantasy BBall experience that roams these forums for some help on how to draft for a CBS Roto fantasy league.

Is it better to go with well-rounded players like Jalen Rose or Ray Allen?

or

Is it good to go with someone like Shaq who may be stacked in certain areas ( like rebounds and blocks ) while deficient in other areas ( like FT% or Steals )?

I am trying to figure out what type of players I should go for....

Your help would be most appreciated.....

Thanks 8-)

I'll reply to this since I abandoned SW/TSN this year for rottisserie leagues . . . wouldn't mind seeing more rotisserie banter here if it's appropriate, since I still use the site as a general resource

Those are very basic categories and pretty easy to manage (some of my leagues have wildcard categories like O-rbds and TOs) . . . the idea is not to generally focus on certain types of players but rather to conceptualize how you're doing in each category as the draft progresses. It's good to try to be as well rounded as possible, in which case it may be wise to pass up guys like Shaq all together in favor of someone who you mentioned like Ray Allen who aren't liabilities in any category (Ray is actually really nice to have because shooting %s and 3ptmd are real commodities), but if you made Ray Ray your first round pick you'd immediately want to start thinking about getting assists, rebounds, and blocked shots. Then again, if Shaq were to slip to a late first round pick you might want to draft him and then develop a strategy, maybe sacrificing FT% alltogether so you can draft guys like Ben Wallace without fear of hurting your ft%.
Anyway, that's the idea. Plus, as a general matter I recomend not waiting to long to get a PG, to be good you HAVE to have one of the top 1/2 dozen PGs, and personally I think it's good to use 2 of your top 5-6 picks on PGs, you have to use the draft to lock down assists and steals. Ditto for centers, especially if your league requires 2 of them, but you have more leeway to hold off if you're unenthused about the available centers with your early picks, a lot of good teams get away with taking serviceable, workmanlike centers later in the draft.

Finally, in one of my roto league that uses those exact categories I'm in first place so I'll give you my draft picks in order (fun fact: other than me this league is all people who work for rotowire.com and I'm crushing them by quite a big margin!), I had the 11/12 pick:
1- Gary Payton, 2- Brand, 3- Peja, 4- Lafrentz, 5- B-Barry, 6- Wally S, 7- Anthony Mason, 8- Wesley, 9- Willis (*groan*), 10- Tinsley, 11- Barros (since dropped for Chucky Atkins), 12- Scott Williams (dropped for Brendan Haywood), 13- Kirilenko, 14- Kwame (dropped for Shawn Bradley)

good luck
