0 Subject: Hip Check v4.11 - GuruPatron Bonus Tool

Posted by: RecycledSpinalFluid

With a recent rash of injuries to my players, I realized what a pain it is to lookup data on players at all the different sites. I wished there was an easy way to say "Open all pages related to Joe Schmoe", click a button and BLAM! There they are. Well, here is what I came up with. Definitely just a beginning point, but better than nothing.

Some low-down:
0.) This is only operational if you are a GuruPatron. This is designed to be a bonus for their financial support of Guru's fabulous site.

1.) To automagicly select all boxes for a specific site, click on the below its name.

2.) The ALL will open up all the possible pages for the specific player (the individual check boxes do not get selected).

3.) If you are running on a dialup, this might be slightly painful. A lot of simultaneous pages loads at one time may cause some to not load.

I think that is about it.

Good Luck.

Guru,

Yeah, I sent it with snail mail. No problem. I was just wondering when I would have access to the injury tool, so I can keep up the injury thread better.

Thanks a lot

Hip Check comes from my failing memory of sports lingos and a pun on injuries. In rat ball, I (being 6'2" and of large frame) would give a hip check as opposed to a hand check (knocking someone "a country mile" in the process.) The injury part naturally plays off of that, as in "checking for hip injuries" or something to that effect. Lastly you could look at it from "hip check" as in cool, neat, etc way to look stuff up (does anyone still use this connotation?). And the versioning was just a play on "411" for info.

There are a couple of minor tweaks I want to add/change, as well as maybe add the ESPN fantasy pages to the list. Are there any constructive critisms, additions that people would want for this thing? Fewer/more name lists? Names by position? Other link pages? Buehler? Buehler? Buehler?

As for the name, if it does get added, just something like "Quick Player Lookup", but I don't really care. Labeling it as a GuruPatron tool would be nice. But people can figure this out later.

Guru,

I seem to have 'lost' my patron tag... can you help? As you can see from ost #5, it used to be attached to this ID#.

rfs - not sure what happened, but it should be OK now.

Hillbilly: I entered your ID for now, although no identifier will show yet. This should enable you to use the program until I get to the mailbox to confirm your donation.

KnicksFan - I updated your ID as well.

If anyone else needs to have their GuruPatron ID updated, just send me an email.

I added a link to this thread in the second drop-down menu, just below the Assimilator link. The title is
RSF's GuruPatron Player Info,
which seemed like the most intuitively descriptive option.

Updated menus will only appear in newly created threads (and in the index of all threads), so don't look for it in this thread.

RSF, if you update program at some point, just post a new thread, and then let me know and I'll update the link.

With the move to a new server, all GuruPatrons have to validate their ID in order to use this tool. This can be done one of two ways:

1. Post a message (or reply) in any forum area or thread. That's what solved GolfFreak's problem in [75].

2. Click here. Assuming this page recognizes your status, you're all set. If not, send me an email, and I'll fix things for you.

This is a great tool to use when planning trades, but I have found a couple of problems. When I wanted to look at Juwan Howard, it sent me to Dallas Mavericks info and when I looked at Troy Hudson, it sent me to Orlando Magic info. I don't know how the links are set up, but if a player has changed teams in the last year, it seems to go to the old team. Just thought you should know.

Yeah, I keep telling myself that I need to invest some time into updating this, but forget about it (usually within seconds of the initial thought).

All traded/moved players as well as rookies are not listed or are incorrectly listed.

It's no big problem really, RotoWorld and RotoGuru are both correct and they give some of the best info available anyway. Thanks again for doing all of this for us sports junkies of the world.

OK, I'm going to update this thing this year with all the current players and add in several more sites.

So far, here is what I am working to include:

Individual Player Pages:
* RotoWire
* RotoWorld
* RotoGuru
* NBA.com
* Waymoresports
* ESPN Player (Is ESPN Fantasy same ID?)
* RealGM
Yahoo

Team Pages:
ESPN Team Page
CNNSI Team Page
TSN Team Page
CBS Sportsline Team Page
Official Team Page (NBA.Com?)
Some Local Press

* = Already Grabbed IDs

Are there additional sites (for player pages or team pages) that I should look into? Come on, give up those top secret sites!

DrD, nice to see you here (assuming you're the one with your own division from last season; Mavwrecks fan IIRC), especially supporting the site with "Donor" tag.

You will be able to access this stuff right here, in this forum. It will just another thread (and is a Drop Down selection "RSF's GuruPatron Player Info" in the second selection box on all Forum Pages).

The next gen of this is working, some have tested it, but I need to do some verifications of the ids. Also, need to verify that it is a Gurupatron only tool, but the changes make it more difficult. I'll need to run some things past Guru to assure that it is. Once those things get ironed out, the new version will be posted.

Recycled, I am always amazed at your ability to come up with the statistics for us. Could you tell me how to find out how many individual players are held by TSN players? It would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, DrD

When in doubt, I make them up.

OK, just kidding. It is done no different than the way you would look at each team in your division (although in your case, you already know! :) ) or the Top-Managers page. I just do it with a few more teams (in this case, all of them). I try to run on off-peak hours to not hog the servers up.

As for technique, there are two ways being used right now. The standings use an Excel Spreadsheet based approach that reads the teams. The second is a VBScript reading the teams and stuffing the data into an Access DB (although, I think I'm going to switch it over to MySQL or MS-SQLServer soon so I can run simultaneous sessions and get done quicker).

As for this thread, uhm, err...I need to finish this up. Players are fairly stable now, so that is about the last hurdle.
