0 Subject: Midseason Game Possibilities

I was sitting in my Business Stats class today doing some thinking about TSN Hoops (surprise, surprise) and I started thinking about Midseason Hoops. I know that there is little chance an official Midseason game will be launched by them, but I started thinking about possibilities so that we could maybe get a Midseason game together in the Ultimate game "unofficially." So I decided to just throw out as an idea as follows:

1) Start a division for Midseason players only in the Ultimate 10 man game.

2) a) Possibly lobby to Bernie and/or Erik about getting some sort of maybe ~$2-4 discount code available to make this more economically feasible (as we are only playing half a season)
AND/OR
2) b) If people e.g. bought >1 team to start out and have a team that they would be willing to scrap for this purpose, possibly checking into the idea of having that team reset during the ASB and thus allowing a division switch to the new Midseason division, if this were allowable.

3) Teams could be created and start accumulating money and points starting on 2/12/02, following the All-Star Break. No one could have a full ten man roster until the freeze of this date, so that no money could be accumulated in advance.

4) Stats would not have to necessarily be run in the Standings thread (as opposed to LRV and 500K), only if someone wanted to do this voluntarily would this be done.

5) If nobody wants to do this, then we don't, no biggie. Just a thought.

I thought this might be a good idea, particularly for those teams who are already way out of it and want some sort of fresh start. In regard to point 2b, I don't know if others have teams they have basically moved their managing focus from; all I know is that I have one team that is 100% out of it, and I wouldn't mind to scrap this one. Also, I don't know if this would be administratively allowed by the powers that be, but I don't see what it would necessarily hurt. Let me know what you think.

I would be interested especially with a discount. My 2 Ultimate teams are locked into a division by myself, and my friends are in other divisions. There is no current motivation. I was really upset at Sporting News for taking my money and then locking the divisions.
Why not do it in the free league if no discount is offered??

in baseball we did a tag-team division with each partner only being able to choose guys from the AL or NL respectively - and then combined the scores for the two partners to get a total... it was kind of fun, would be interesting to see how someone could come up with an East team vs. a West team... (especially when comparing the all-star rosters) - maybe we could do it in the free game...

Id be interested in joining a mid-season game. Either free or pay. Id rather have the challege of pay, but
im not sure id be willing to dole out the money. I do like the idea of being able to reset a roster, if at all
possible, i know i have a team that serves no purpose right now except how high a WWR i can attain.

Except for .5% of the players that's what we all are playing for.

If I am reading this correctly, these are just Midseason prices for the Ultimate game. If anybody believes and/or knows differently, let me know. Otherwise, if anyone is interested in putting something organized together, then this is the place to do it.

HD,
Well, as I created this post 2 days ago and barely anyone has expressed interest/disinterest I don't know what is up. FWIW, I was trying to organize something, as you suggest, but my attempts have been futile.

If SW doesn't do a midseason game we could always go back and organize the MSG game (Mid-Season Gurupies) like we did before SW built the midseason game. I can see how we'd put together two free season games and combine the data for each manager. Perhaps each manager would be required to buy 10 different players. I actually enjoy the free game, but I know it's been shunned by others. There are many other game-related issues/difficulties to discuss of course, but it's doable if there's sufficient interest.

As for having TSN wipe out current data so we could play this game - don't count on it happening. Additionally, don't expect many Gurupies to shell out money for a game that will have no prize structure, so don't bet on people paying for another team, IMHO.

I just looked at the main page and they have a "Super Midseason Discount" where you can buy a team for 5.95 or something like that. Now my question is, is this just a discount for the Ultimate game or is it a separate game? I cant find any more info about it. Any one else know?

Thanks

rage,

If I understand you correctly, you are interested in getting gurupies to join a division in which we all buy new teams, start out at 50 million, and compete amongst ourselves, right?

I don't know about anyone else, but I would be interested. It would have to be greatly organized though to ensure that we all start our teams on the same day.

With the reduced prices for a team now, I can see more interest in this idea.

BTW, thanks TSN for lowering the prices and giving us an opportunity to play a midseason game cheaper (if you guys don't offer an official midseason game).

What about you MF? Are you in if we get enough teams?

SillySpheres,
I am interpreting Super midseason discount on Ultimate Fantasy Hoops teams! as referring to the pay game we are currently playing, which is called Ultimate. But that is just what I am inferring.

HD,
That's the gist of what I am saying. And I would be willing to get another team.

are tsn guys joking us?? what's this "More chances to win divisional and weekly prizes! "???
divisional chances are the same of before, because it's not easier to win a division, and chances to win weekly prizes are far less because your RV is far worst than the one of who started before......mmmmh, why don't we create a TAG GAME IN THE FREE GAME, with teams of 5 players just from 1 division???

Would that be false advertisement?
I guess it does say you have a "chance" to win though. Even though it should say, you have about a 0.00001% chance.

THK,

The ad means to me that you could buy you a TSN team now for $5 (or whatever). My impression is that you will still be competing with others who have played since October.

If this is correct, an alternative for a midseason game was suggested above by rage. We could start us a division of teams that begin let's say the Monday after the ASB (I assume there are no games). If we do this, we must sign up and form our teams that day AFTER the price changes, which will ensure that each of us start with 50 million and 0 pts on Tuesday morning pre-freeze.

If there is enough interest in this idea, I would probably buy a new team for $5.

I don't understand...that is so stupid. They aren't making a totally different gm where you start fresh and the #1 manager in the world has 0 TSNP!!!

I was excited and ready for this gm, if it isn't this way I probably won't do it.

OK. Skip my post #20 above. Looks like the MSG would still be a possibility. I see a tag team game is also being organized. Apparently I misinterpreted TSN's blurb to mean that they were offering prices on late teams, not a midseason game. Oh well.

the Mid-Season games historically have attracted a far fewer number of people than the full season game. i'm sure TSN was disappointed and maybe somewhat shocked that only 5,000 signed up for the pay game as opposed to several hundred thousand sign ups in past free games. they must feel it is not worth starting a mid season game if they will get much less than 5000 sign ups...just my opinion but i bet i'm on target.

Well, as for the low number of ppl signing up, I have a bunch of friends that played smallworld last season in my division. I have to say that it was more fun than having an automated division that I have now. My friends introduced me to the game two years ago. Then, when it became a pay game, they were upset. At first, I was too, but I paid anyway. It has been fun this season so far though.

I would much rather, TSN start up an official midseason game also.

It may attract fewer players, but the overhead is nothing for TSN, they're already running the game, have it setup. Just need to implement.

$6 for no possibility of winning a grand prize? And having no mid-season game at all is a major departure from Smallworld's past history. Sheesh.

By the way, if the Mid Season Gurupie game is recreated, the spreadsheet I have for the 500 K Game would probably work fine for it. It combines two free teams to make one total.

Apparently I.Lazio has started a TAG TEAM DIVISION here, so I guess people can buy players for teams for that starting on Monday 2/11. We might have some issues with trades (I'm not sure though) and people buying players early. So let me know if you are joining this division, want to start another division with a different approach than the 5 east/5 west technique, or whatever.

Gang:

We simply don't have the resources to build a mid-season game. We're getting ready for baseball, and a new, very cool simulation game (more on this later).

Yes, we've steeply discounted Ultimate, but that puts you into the regular season game. Still at $5.95, it may be worth putting a RotoGurupie division together.

Here's what I'll promise, if 20+ Gurupies sign-up for a mid-season Gurupie division (audited by yours truly), I'll throw in $50 worth of old Smallworld gear to the winner. Yeah, I know -- not exactly breaking the bank here, but it's honestly the best I can do.

If you decide to do this, the division needs to be inclusive to all Rotogurupie board members.

Let me know (ebarmack@sportingnews.com).
