OK, since this topic was brought up in tonite's action thrd(Artest it seems got a little too much credit), I was curious if anyone had a definitive answer on how exactly a player gets credit for a steal. It seems to me, having watched my fair share of NBA games, there appears to be no ryhme or reason to who actually gets the credit for the steal.
I have seen where a player pokes the ball away, only to have it land in a teammate's hands and that player gets the credit for the stl(I think the guy who actually pokes it away should get credited). I've also seen it scored in what I believe is the proper way. Why isn't a defender who pokes the ball away, but has it go out of bounds off the offensive player's leg for a turnover credited for a stl? Does a defender get credit for a stl if the offensive player simply loses control and the defender just picks up the loose ball?
Possibly the only true way to make 100% certain you get credit for a stl is to try YOUNGBUCK'S approach. For those of you new to the boards or just forgetful I will repeat the play by play of his steal, "A couple minutes later another ball came rolling towards me, but before anyone could see it I quickly picked it up and rolled it up in my jacket. then I sat there like nothing had happened watched for about 15 more minuets then walked up to my seat with the ball wrapped in my jacket under my arm, sat in my seat and watched the game then whent home with a OFFICIAL NBA BASKETBALL!!!" However it seems sometimes even this approach doesn't get you credited with a steal, instead it gets you SEVERELY chastised by Jedman or AZdbacker(glad those 2 guys weren't scorekeeping that nite).
Any help anyone(besides Jedman and Azdbacker-as we know those 2 guys, along with that guy Ender, all seem to think stealing is wrong and would never credit anyone with a steal) can be would sure be appreciated.

WAB,

I think you may find some discussion in post 22 from an old thread.

Nice post! There's alot of funny stuff in there.....There's never any consistency in steals so I just go by what the stats say.
