I decided to go see the Harlem Globetrotters with a couple friends today at Continental Airlines Arena. It sucked! There was barely any basketball. It was all little kids going on the court and the globetrotters prancing around grabbing the refs butt and the other teams players while they shot free throws. The other team obviously wasn't playing defense but it seemed like no one else in the arena realized it. SURE they are all great bball players and have amazing dribbling skills but I think they need to be more specific in there advertising. Maybe something along the lines of The Harlem Globetrotters traveling Comedy show. All I can say is it wasn't worth my 30 bucks.
Has anyone else seen them before?

Yup.
Thats what they're notorious for. I saw them about 6-7 years ago. Its never been a real game, just a show and some dribbling/half court shots.
(BTW; GTrotters always win ;)

How long have you been living under a rock? Just curious because I think pretty well everyone knows that the Globtrotters are more of a comedy troupe then a basketball team.

The best Globetrotter's games to see are when they play a real team, not the Washington Generals or some other fool team. I saw them play Michigan State on TV last year and wow, it was a helluva game. You really get to see their skills when they play real opponets.

Can,
I knew it was comedy but I thought i might be able to see 20 mins of basketball instead of 2 mins!

I saw them a long time ago. I will always remember it because at half time they announced the score of the Duke (after winning back to back) California (with Jason Kidd) game which I had decided to miss in the midst of March Madness.
California 81, Duke 77.

Or, remember this?, your own separate Saturday morning cartoon.
IBTM, I'm not sure what you were expecting, but it sounds like their standard routine to me.

Guys,
i was expecting to see some BASKETBALL, and good basketball at that. The only other time I had seen them play was on t.v. against a real team so I guess I was expecting a real and exciting game.

When I was a kid, in the early and mid seventies, The Globetrotters were spectacular. All I can remember now is Meadowlark Lemon and that bald dude, Curly (?). Seeing the Globetrotters play was really eye-opening stuff for me as a kid. I don't know anything about the team now, but they have a rich past and maybe, indirectly, have influenced the way the NBA is produced today. They put a certain style and flair into the game that probably still resonates today.

IBTM and Rand al'Thor, do you guys have monitors for your PC that are like 4 inches wide or are you just carriage return junkies? ;)
BTW, it was Curly Neal, IIRC, and they were pretty entertaining to me back then too.

IBTM (post 4)- In the local papers before the gms it always tells about how they play real ball until they get a lead then just screw around. They are great ballers, but when they get a lead they just mess around.
2 yrs ago- Mich St-86 Harlem GTrotters-84
Seen them 3 times, court side....mom was sat on, and thrown water on 2 times

The Globetrotters have more than one team on the road. they have a "serious" team which is the one you see play real college teams and they have a comedy team which is the one that plays the same team every time. obviously the comedy opponent is in on the joke and is basically the "straight man" to all their antics. it is similar to pro wrestling in which the opponent (and referees) know exactly what to expect and act accordingly.

The Globetrotters started going downhill when Meadowlark Lemon left and started his own team.
It wasn't the same after that.
