0 Subject: Looking Back: Biggest Mistakes

Hey,
Figured I might as well try to get some discussion going here, finished my homework and being a loser I have nothing to do now but hit reload on this page for the next few hours. I thought I was having a pretty crappy season compared to last year, but lately I've been making a push and now I'm higher than I've ever been in WWR, and I'm starting to think how high I could have been if it wasn't for a few really dumb "what was i thinking?" moves. There's been a lot of moves that I wish I hadn't done but aren't too memorable or that big of a deal, but there's been some that I kick myself every day about. Here's some of them off the top of my head:

1. McGrady to Kobe. I really wish I could take this one back. This was back during the Lakers' first good stretch of schedule, and everyone for the whole week before was talking nonstop about how they were going to fit Kobe, Shaq, or both onto their teams. From what I remember the Lakers had a four game TSN week with the first game on Thursday night, and I had McGrady who played Wednesday and not Thursday. I was going to take the money hit by not getting Kobe the first day to get McGrady's points (who hadn't been playing very well). But then it was announced that McGrady was extremely doubtful for the night, so I took the risk and bought Kobe ahead of time to get the money swing. McGrady plays, goes off for almost 50 if I recall. Vowed I'd never make that mistake again, which leads to...

2. Webber to Marion. I think it was the week of the all-star break, but I could be wrong. Everyone was ready to jump on Marion, and then they announce that Webber is extremely doubtful. Just like last time, I make the move a day early for the money, and just like last time Webber plays. I think it was only 30 SWP, but still.

3. Terry to no one. This happened just the other day, I was all set on going Terry to Rose but due to some issues at college (involving urine (not mine), my floor, and moving out), I completely forgot to. Which I don't regret, because it let me go to Andre Miller and Billups for last night's games, but I wish I had seen that possibility a day in advance so instead of a "0" from Terry Wednesday night I could have gotten Billups's triple double. At this point that's about 150 SWP thrown away for no reason at all.

4. Francis to Miller to Kobe to Payton. I'm blaming this one on Y2JS and his "Lose Miller" speeches. This one falls into another lesson I learned this season, if a player you want to sell and a player you want to buy both play on the same night, do not make the trade. I sold Francis for Miller ignoring this rule, and at first I thought I had lucked out, since I got Miller's price gain and also a whopping additional 4 SWP. Then I got onto the forum and saw the infamous post that Miller left the game with about a minute left with some kind of an injury. He had two days to rest it I think and I was going to hold, but then right at the last second due to some coaching I traded him for Kobe, who will never be on my team again. After suffering through Kobe for a few days I decided that I had had enough and went to Payton, even though it didn't give me any advantage in terms of games. And besides the triple double game and one other I think, Payton wasn't even too great compared to Kobe. So basically I used a week's worth of trades to lose points.

5. Gasol to Van Horn. If you ever read that I'm considering getting Van Horn, set me on fire. Without a doubt the player who will never under any circumstances be on my team again. I always say that about Raef too and he always finds his way back on my roster, but I can assure you Van Horn never will. I noticed in the schedule you could get a +3 Van Horn games compared to Gasol's schedule, and under normal circumstances that seems like a very safe trade. Gasol plays his first game, goes completely off. In fact, in that one game he ended up outscoring the three Van Horn games, and for the rest of the week Gasol continued at that pace, leaving me kicking myself. Never again.

At least I stayed away from Marbury all year. Also wish I had never traded Artest (out for the season, yeah right...) for Christie and wish I had drafted Tinsley over Claxton. Barry for Penny was pretty dumb too. But what can you do.

Anyone else have any huge mistakes?

I remember getting Shaq on that first laker run, and using too many trades to make it possible only to get a mediocre play from Shaq Daddy.

Dropping Tinsley before he went off with his huge game (you all should know what game that was) was a big mistake, but most managers are with me on that boat.

Getting Francis for his recurring migraines was always a risk, and I'm still taking that risk even as we 'speak', that goes to show you how we never learn.

Not believing in Brent Barry early on (never had him in Nov/Dec on what is now my best team), and not getting into Tinsley on that team early enough. Stayed skeptical (actually, "stubbornly clung to my initial evaluations" is more like it) despite the plain evidence to the contrary piling up day after day. That team is now in the top 100 but was in four figures for quite a while.

Also shared DR Stars mistake of getting into a subpar Shaq for that early LAL stretch.

......This stretch of trading cost me my season. From a team destined for the top 100 (in the 120's at this point), I wasted numerous trades on trying to get 4 in 5's from the Boston players and Brand. I used too many trades in this stretch, and it took me almost a month (and a WWR that dropped around 300) to get out. I've made my way back to 162, and I have a chance at top 150.

Bought into the Eddie Robinson hype, who was on my team approximately five minutes before I discovered he was placed on the injured list that same night. Always check the reports before purchasing - duhh. Also my first draft and keeping Gugs and Kemp thinking they would surely rise to their past glories. Dug a hole early in the season and watched it sink deeper.

me, there were several...calvin booth, the 7 trades to get into and out of shaq/kobe and devean george after getting hit with the eddie robinson IR as well. The most critical was this past week's DNP from shaq though when I could have gotten the other studs a day early when they all went nuts.

Phase1: Jumping on/off/on the AK/Tins/JJ banwagon too many times and wasting too many trades on <$3M players early. Kept me out of T100 first two months by distracting/preventing me from getting Duncan.

Phase2: Christmas Disasters, tons of DNP's coupled with slow connection at the in-laws=me burning thru about 11 trades in a week eating tons of RV and going from about WWR115 to WWR350 never to recover. Really it looks astoundingly similar to SW's post. Oh yeah and then there was Odum.

Phase3: While mounting a steady climb back to about 200 the lakers kicked in a good sched. I held on to Shaq/Kobe way way way way too long. Now I am at season worst 415WWR and I've thrown in the towel.

rfs, you remember the action thread where I told you not to get Booth? Maybe the only good advice I gave to anyone all season.

The cheap center strategy was working pretty well so I stayed with it and decided not to go into Ben Wallace. He exploded and my centers imploded.

Thinking (at the last second) that I would "differentiate" by not drafting Gary Payton.

One of my suitemates has spent the entire year blaming every misfortune that befell my team on its lack of Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje.

A few weeks back I was contemplating either Kurt Thomas, Juwan Howard(when he just got traded to Denver)or Tom Gugliotta...
Can you guess who I picked? Yup GOOGS !
the next night Thomas exploded for 60+ SWP and I used another trade 2 days later to get rid of Googsafter 2 sub 20 point performances. What a waste of 2 trades

googs DNP's...I had to hold him for a whole week because of no
trades. also trading in and out of cheapies. selecting foyle over
magloire explosion. and getting new job that took time away from
studying and analyzing schedules and players....ULTIMATE
FANTASY HOOPS IS WAY TOO IMPORTANT.

Oh i see how it is! Last time i checked you were staying up till 5am making moves and you were the one with the highest RV around here but somehow it's my fault that you traded Miller. I'm having my own problems here, take your 40wwr and keep it shut! I know for a fact i was a bigger help than i was a negative, didn't you say I'm higher than I've ever been in WWR?

Oh well, you know i'm just joking man ;) Besides, i think you're just mad you don't get Raw and can't watch Booker T anymore. Damn draft

Haha, the lack of Booker T is definitely the source of everything. I'm so tired of those 5 a.m. decisions, there's probably going to be a lot of those next week when deciding who we want on our teams for the final day. That's going to be a mess.

You're just upset because you didn't listen to me about the powerful Jamal Magloire in the first place.

I had 1 team in the top 10 & the other in the top 50 in the first week of the season & proceeded to trade myself right out of contention. I had no idea this forum even existed until sometime around December. I wasted way too many trades on no impact players & insignificant cheapies such as Mihm-Ollie-Kemp-Kittles-John Wallace-Erob-Buford-Nazr-Claxton etc. Also picking up Googs after his 2 good games then trading him for Kukoc was a real bright idea not to mention swapping cheap centers on a weekly basis.

I know what you mean! I have been trying to catch the guy in front of me and I can say when I tried to maximize games..I got burnt more often than not. It is a discipline thing I guess? Next year I will get the Studs like Kidd, KG, CWebb, TD and save my trades to maximize the games by the great players that are far more consistant!

Buying ERob when he 1st returned. Then holding Tinman when he hit the wall. Also, owning DC on at least 3 occassions for the value.

Ya, I had DC early in the year and with no trades left he went down early in the week. All of the cash I made on him was lost by the next Tuesday (650,000) Loss if I remember correctly? Ouch Major setback!

a) working instead of being at school with nothing else better to do

b) moving to taiwan to work and not getting to watch many games... pretty much just going by box scores and sartibles instead of watching games and going with the gut

considering i when i moved i was #1... now in the 400s... i'd say b is a biggie

go gurupies still in the running

My biggest mistake is not making enough money to get in the top 100. My RV stands at 58.91 and I see the best players with high 60's and even 70's(millions). Senator Urine, you have a very impressive RV. In the beginning of the year I set out to make a ton of cash...it didn't happen. I must be missing something as far as that is concerned. How do you guys do it?

The Biggest things I regret are not maturing enough to hold trades until almost January, but now with the game pretty much over, I have reverted back to the burn 'em if you got 'em strategy.

As far as players go, Staying with Speedy Claxton way to long early on, Ditto to the not believing in Brent Barry. I never looked at schedules for long term guys early on, I just looked a week or two in advance. I was in the top 20 for a couple weeks, now I will be lucky to get back to the top 200.

I will take Pride that I was the vocal leader for the cheap center route, and got into Wallace and Shaq at the right times.

Most recent bonehead move. I wanted to get Shaq's game a few nights ago when he sat out the first night. So after the trade deadline that day I traded Shaq and Horry for Duncan and Magloire. As you may recall Shaq/Horry pulled off 6 total fantasy points, while the other pair was in the upper 70's. Had I just done it earlier, I would probably be in the 175+ WWR.

Oh, Well, lessons for next year...

Good Luck
