12.06 - J. Bender, F: Slim pickings at this point, but Bender has some potential. In just 25mpg thus far, he's putting up 6 rpg, 3 bpg and 10ppg. Good upside for a pick this late in the draft.

12.08 - Pat Garrity, F: We know what we're getting here: lots of threes, decent percentages, and not much else. He's not going to win us the league, but a three point shooting forward probably won't hurt us here either.

12.09 – Dale Davis, POR, F/C: Dale Davis should average over 30 minutes and get around 10 points, 9 boards, and 1 block per game. Most importantly for me, he’ll shoot near or over 50% and won’t kill me at the line. There’s a small worry that Sabonis may take some of his minutes as the year progresses, but hopefully I’ll have a better option at center by then.

12.10 Erick Dampier, C: With such a lack of talent at the center position, we felt that grabbing Dampier here was a no-brainer. The man has posted solid numbers out of the gate (10.3 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 3.0 BPG in three games) that is hard to ignore here. These numbers certainly don't fall in line with Dampier's career averages, so we don't expect it to necessarily last. However, we'll be happy with 8-9 PPG, 6-8 RPG and a couple blocks per game.

12.11 J. Tsakalidis, C

Three more centers!

I'm up for two picks.

Filling in some previously skipped picks.

12.03 D. Anderson, G: Although you can't really count on Anderson or any other Blazer being a superstar, I think Anderson will be an adequate stat-filler. I expect to get good shooting percentages, steals, assists and decent points and rebounds totals out of him. He added some muscle during the offseason and that should make him more durable.

12.07 - T. Hassell, G

Argh! D. Anderson was who I was about to suggest for you. Still some good players available. If you are going "best on board" at this point, players like B. Jackson, D. Fisher, R. Mercer, C. Atkins, L. Murray (injured), Peeler, R. Patterson, D. Wagner, Harpring, Williamson, and Best all appear to still be available.

12.12 Bobby Jackson, G: Jackson may not grace my starting lineup for long, but until Bibby returns, I’ll rack up some stats from a very respectable fill-in point guard.

13.01 Dajuan Wagner, G: A bladder infection has kept him inactive, so there’s not even any preseason pro experience to review. On the other hand, the Cavs aren’t going anywhere this year, and Wagner should get plenty of minutes to contribute as soon as he’s healthy. In his absence, Bimbo Coles and Milt Palacio aren’t giving him much to worry about.

Jackson will help a lot if the league gets started before Bibby returns (lol). Seriously, agree with the comments you wrote. Wagner was a very popular pre-season pick and certainly has a big upside. For that reason, he could be a steal. Probably fell off a lot of people's radar with the lack of playing time.

I'm still center-vulnerable, with only 2 (Kurt Thomas & Keon Clark), so if one of them disappears, I've got to find another. I was thinking of Dale Davis for this pick until he was taken several picks ago. Maybe I'll find some tall stiff for my next pick, but the Jackson/Wagner combo seemed to offer better potential - and with 12 starters each week, I need a 12th man to contribute.

Jackson should contibute nicely until Bibby returns, and maybe Wagner will be ready to step up at that point. Between the two, I might have a full season guard.

Tsakalidis commentary: At this point in the draft, Jake has everything I want in a starting center. Specifically, he is starting at center Anything after that is gravy. Because of the PROFL positional structure, I have deliberately bypassed drafting starting centers until late in the draft. My logic was simple... at this point all the players are pretty weak. What does it matter if I draft a poor starting forward, guard, center, or flex player? In this league, there are only 2 marquee centers (Dirk and Shaq...  incidentally, ESPN listed Jermaine O'neal as having 9 starts at center last year, so he DOES NOT qualify as a center for our league), a 2nd tier of centers who score 10 points and grab 10 rebounds (Dikembe, Candyman, Uncle Cliffy, etc...), and nothing but projects afterward (everybody else). Jake will be good for 8 points, 7 rebounds, and a block... nearly as good as a second tier center.

13.02 Z. Rebraca, C: Rebracca and Tsakalidis are my attempt at creating a workable 2nd center. Both are starting, both are legitament 7 footers with size. Both have a decent jumper from 15 and in, and have some post moves. Betweeen the two of them, somebody should approach double digit points and contribute in rebounds and block shots.

13.03 Matt Harpring, F: We really wanted Dejaun here [heh-heh!], but knew we were taking a risk on him not coming back when we took Dampier. Harpring seemed a logical pick as we still need some depth at forward and Matt should put up decent numbers in Utah this season. Should see numbers in the neighborhood of 11-13 PPG and 6-7 RPG. His decent FG% and FT% shouldn't hurt us either.

Maybe. If all of my guards pan out (including Jackson post-Bibby), then I probably have a surplus.

Barring a monster year from Keon Clark, my weaknesses are going to occur in rebounds and blocks, I think. That'll be a switch, after having Ben Wallace last season. I actually considered Rebraca for my 13th pick, but decided that he didn't necessarily offer superior totals in either!

13.04 Kelvin Cato, C

13.05 - Malik Allen, F: Allen has played at least 35 minutes in each of the first 3 games, averaging 16 points and 6 rebounds on excellent percentages. He has even contributed the occasional block. He should continue to get the minutes and put up decent numbers for a weak Miami team.

Agree on Rebraca. Although he starts, I think he needs more minutes. He also seems to have limited shot-blocking ability. That being said, he's relatively skilled for a 7 footer.

13.06 Ira Newble - G, Atl

13.07 T. Best - G, MIA: I'm guard-deprived right now, as V. Carter looks hurt and Battier looks... well it looks like he's lost his job. So I need to find a serviceable player, and Best seems to fit the bill. He'll get his 25 mpg, so good FT% with 4-5 apg and 9-10 ppg is reasonable.

13.08 Rasho Nesterovic, C: Well, if my centers are at least starters I'm happy. I must say, more than 8 points and 6 rebounds per game is okay at this point in the draft, not to mention the 1.33 blocks. Hurts the FT% but I'm OK with that if he continues to inprove in other areas.

LOL.....I love how the comments in rounds 1-5 are all sparkling....and when you get past round 10 most of the comments are prefaced with "Well, I'm desperate and there's not much out there, but......."

I know it's true, but when you read these comment after comment and see how the enthusiasm slides, it's quite comical.

Best's minutes may be reduced significantly if/when Anthony Carter recovers from the flu/strep throat. so that pick seems somewhat misguided.

And yeah, the commentary near the end of a draft is always funny. its like "the titanic is sinking and everyone is going to die....but hey, we had a nice steak dinner earlier so its only fair."

14.03 Dan Gadzurik, C: I almost played against this guy in high school and I'm glad I didn't. He's a blocking machine. He won't block many shots against the elite frontcourts of the NBA (Sacramento & San Antonio), but he should finish among the league leaders and grab a good amount of rebounds. If his Milwaukee teammates start giving him the ball more he will score some points too.

Sabonis commentary: This international great is getting on in years, but he still has his skills. In the brief minutes that he receives he should still accumulate some points, rebounds, and three pointers. I'm not counting on too many blocked shots. You can measure his vertical with sheets of paper.

More catch-up commentary:

13.12 - Clarence Weatherspoon - F: Spoon wasn't much of a fantasy threat last season but that could change this year. He'll be the starter for the Knicks at PF due to the McDyess injury and that last time he started, 2 seasons ago in Cleveland, he averaged 11 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 50%FG, 79% FT and better then 1 block and 1 spg. Those are stats are worthy of a top 5 or 6 pick. Anything approaching those numbers this year and this could prove to be a steal and he's off to a decent start this season.

14.01 - Derek Fisher - G: Fisher's bascially a 2 trick pony with a solid FT% and a bunch or 3's but he will get more assists then just about any guard available in this spot also. With almost 150 3's last season, he could prove valuable later in the year should I keep him or trade him to a team that needs to improve in this category.

Guru, don't know how you do it. I was going crazy as we were still drafting during the first week, but they used retro stats--so that was a little more comforting. I highly doubt that I ever do an e-mail draft again and I'd be going nuts if I was committed to the PROFL league where they are in the 13th round in the 2nd week of the season!

You just have to have the patience to accept the things you cannot change. In the grand scope of things, a slug-butt slow draft is not worth getting exercised about.

Meanwhile...
14.05 skipped

14.06 Vladimr Stepania, C: Considering that all three of the centers I've drafted are hurt or on the IR, I think I need a center here. I was hoping to grab Nesterovic as he was a starter, but Stepania is a decent pick up. A solid rebounder and shot blocker, he can put up 8ppg. His numbers should go up if he gets more than his 20-22 mpg. At this point Stepania will start for me (bad) but in two weeks he should be my third center (behind Shaq and LaFrenz), which isn't all that bad.

14.05 Tayshaun Prince,F: Prince is a true scorer and if given the chance could really contribute to the Pistons this year. He may need to down a few burgers and put on some weight, but he can help the Pistons on both ends of the floor with his long reach. His size and speed make him a matchup nightmare.

14.07 Courtney Alexander, G

14.08 Anthony Peeler, G: Peeler is averaging over 30 minutes, 10 points, and 2 threes per game. He should continue to get plenty of minutes even when Wally World is healthy. Never shy, Peeler always manages to get points and threes in bunches when given the minutes.

14.09 Shawn Bradley, C

14.10 Voshon Lenard, G: At this point, we are simply looking for depth. We want guys that get minutes and can help out in a category or two. Lenard seems to be a good pick here, especially with the injury bug hitting Vince early this year. Voshon has averaged over 33 minutes a game thus far in his new surroundings and has posted great numbers (13.8 PPG, 5.0 RPG, .929 FT%). Plus we don't mind that he isn't afraid to launch the threes.

2 hours between picks.

14.11 Loren Woods, C

14.12 Chucky Atkins, G: Billups insurance.

15.01 Adonal Foyle, C: Backup center for Golden State and for me. If I’m ever desperate for blocks, maybe he’ll get the nod. And if Dampier gets injured (which is not at all a long shot, if past is prologue), then the Warriors and I might both get “Foyled.”

15.02 Christian Laettner, F/C

15.03 C. Williamson, F: The "Big Nasty" should have some value as a reserve for our squad. On his way to earning the Sixth Man award last year, Corliss posted a .510 FG% accompanied by 13.6 PPG and 4.1 RPG. He's gotten off to a slow start this season, but we see no reason why he shouldn't finish with similar numbers.

15.04 Kenny Thomas, F

15.05 - Lucious Harris, G: Lucious is part of the Nets' explosive bench that Coach Byron Scott loves to give minutes. He averaged over 9 points last year and is getting over 12 this year. His percentages are nice and he's a good three point shooter. Harris doesn't add much else, but he won't hurt us either.

He should get a lot of easy baskets with T-Mac and Hill getting a ton of attention, so as long as those two are healthy, his FG% should help. Hey, it's something at this point.

No. His last two picks were:

14.12 Chucky Atkins
15.01 Adonal Foyle

Guru's up again at the end of the 16th round.

16.04 Ron Mercer, F

16.05 Rodney Rodgers,F: An integral part of the Celtics run to the Confrence Finals last year, Rogers will be a solid addition to the Nets frontcourt this year. His 11.9 ppg and 4.5 rpg last year were solid and he hits threes as well (at a 37% clip). Nice late pickup if you ask me.

16.06 Deshawn Stevenson, G: Stevenson may need another year of seasoning, but at this stage of the draft, he's worth a shot for my guard-challenged squad. Deshawn gets almost 30 minutes a night and puts up 8pg, 91% FT and 3.5 rebounds. His shooting pct. is atrocious, but the hope is that some of Stockton's discipline will rub off on him as the season progresses.

16.07 Michael Dickerson, G

16.08 - Jerome Williams, F: With Toronto decimated by injuries, the Junkyard Dog can snatch at least 10 rebounds per game. Plus, his nickname is the junkyard dog.

16.10 Joe Smith, F: Smith is out for at least the first month of the season with a groin injury. He's worth the risk in the last round of the draft, with the hopes that he can come back later in the season to give us somewhere around his career averages of 13.7 PPG and 7.3 RPG.

16.11 Lee Nailon, F: Nailon was pretty impressive with in his starts last year, and has moved from a talented Charlotte team to a pretty weak Knicks team. Weatherspoon is really too small to play four, and now that Thomas is playing center, Nailon might become the starting PF for the Knicks. At the very least, he should hit his totals of last year, including double digit points and great percentages for a forward.

Down to the last pick, which is mine. I'll probably take Gugliotta, unless someone can come up with a better idea.

(I did a quick sort of TSNP, and Gugs was the highest undrafted player in TSNP.)

I'd strongly consider drafting Lamond Murray Guru. I think he can be valuable after his injury. I don't recall anyone selecting him. I assume after drafting him you can IL him, and possibly pick someone else up as a free agent (Gugs etc). Even if not, I'd probably take him.

That was my other thought. I can warehouse Murray (and Wagner for now) and then pick up an active player. Perhaps that is the best tactic at this point.

16.12 Tom Gugliotta, F

I thought about Murray, but after seeing that he is now expected to miss 16 weeks, I can't see him being worth a lick. Meanwhile, Gugs seems to be healthy, and could be a nice pickup. While I probably could have grabbed him as a free agent, there are a lot of teams with injured players in this roto league, and there may be a free agent free-for-all right away. With Murray of such dubious value, I opted for the bird in the hand.

I caught a break. We just completed a vote to choose between using stats retroactive to the start of the season or using a current start date. For a retro start, we would need to select a constant lineup to apply from 10/29 through this Sunday (11/10).

The vote was 7-5 in favor or retro stats. If my spreadsheet is correct, this puts me in first place through last night's game, assuming that every team makes optimal roster adjustments (i.e., that injured players are benched and the optimal subs are inserted.) With 12 teams in the league (and therefore a max of 12 ranking points in each category), I think every one of my categories will score at least 9, and my total for all 8 categories will be 82!

Hopefully this bodes well for the rest of the year. Last year I also started out strong, with the lead for the first month or so. Then Steve Francis started his migraines, and Ray Allen and Donyell Marshall got injured, and things generally deteriorated.

So far, my only injury concern is Keon Clark. He did well enough so far that I'll keep him in my opening lineup and hope he plays the rest of this week. Subbing Adonal Foyle is unlikely to help, since I'd have to replace Keon's previous stats with Foyle's as well.

(Curiously, the voting for retro stats was not very sensible. Aside from me, the 6 guys voting in favor of retro stats will be ranked 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, & 11. The guys who will start out in 2nd and 3rd place both voted the other way!)

League stats are maintained at Sportsline. I think the league page at FanrtasyRef is only updated very sporadically.

So far, so good - although I'm not sure why. I've had my share of injury problems, with Billups, Kirilenko, M. Miller, and Stojakovic all missing games. Billups ended up missing the entire past week, while Atkins languished on the bench. The weekly lineup freeze was ill timed for that injury. In addition, Duncan hasn't lived up to his #1 pick stature yet.

And yet, I'm still in first. Go figure!

A lot of your mid to late round picks seem to be the difference makers, which is exactly how all first place teams truly make their hay. Snow miller christie and jackson especially stand out, nice work!

Agreed. Christie has been a solid contributor, although I expected that. He's the Rodney Dangerfield of fantasy hoops, I think.

Miller has been up and down. Got a nice bonus from him on Sunday when the two stars were both out.

Snow has been solid, and probably slipped later than he should have. I thought that pick would be a good one.

Jackson is probably on borrowed time, but I'm enjoying the ride while it lasts.

It looks like Dajuan Wagner will start playing this week, so I'll have to figure out if/where he fits in.

And I also need to sort out Billups vs. Atkins. My worst fear is that they share the job. Ugh.

And presumably, Duncan will reassert his dominance.

When all is said and done, injury avoidance may be the most critical factor.

Sweet. Maybe you can give us an update here every 2 weeks or so, Guru. Excellent job.

My guess is that your rating system, taking all categories into account is making the difference so far. Too many of these guys went for the more glorified stats instead of the steady, multi-category performers.

Dirk, with the Center eligibility, sure makes a strong argument to be the #1 pick.
