0 Subject: Donating to the Guru

Posted by: Perm Dude
- Leader [87192619] Thu, Nov 07, 2002, 12:07

I keep forgetting to send in money to the Guru, but today I finally got off my butt and sent in another $5 via PayPal. This is just a call-out to all you guys, like me, who keep putting it off. Take 5 minutes, go to PayPal, and send in da cash.

Want to learn about how to help out Dave? Click the "GuruPatron" link at the top.

Thanks to PD for raising this topic. Let me provide a brief recap of how things are going on the GuruPatron front.

This program of voluntary support commenced in March of 2001. Through the end of 2001, 195 individuals contributed a total of $9,575. My total expenses for the calendar year 2001 were about $7,500 - so I "earned" about $2000, which pretty closely recouped my losses from the prior year, due to defaults on advertising payments.

The totals for 2002 are shown at the top of these pages. And although it looks like I'll come up well short of last year's income total, I am saving some money on my new dedicated server, so I think I'll end up at least flush.

It is interesting to look at the contribution patterns in several brackets:
  1. Of the 195 who contributed in 2001, 126 have not yet been heard from this year. Those 126 people donated almost $4,700 last year.
  2. 69 people donated in both years. Those 69 people donated a total of $4,988 in 2001, and their 2002 donations have totaled $4,087. That's a bit of a decline, but not too bad - and the year is not yet over. Some make fairly regular recurring contributions, which can really add up.
  3. So far, there have been 67 new GuruPatrons this calendar year, who have donated just a little over $2000 in total.
I don't know how to interpret the non-renewals of 126 people. I know that some are no longer using the site, and I'm sure that some are financially unable to renew. But there may still be a significant segment that have simply forgotten. I have not sent out any notices to those people, as this is supposed to be a totally voluntary system. I will respond to inquiries, however, if you don't recall when you last donated.

As I've mentioned before, revenues from advertising and product sales are infinitesimal. GuruPatron contributions represent about 98% of the current revenue source.

I've long since surrendered any notion that this venture will be materially profitable - at least with the amount of effort that I'm willing to devote to revenue-raising activities. And although donations have fallen off a lot this year, I will cover costs once again. It would be nice to build up a little cushion for future years, but I would prefer devote the vast majority of my time to the fun aspects of running this site, and continually shaking the trees for loose change is not one of those aspects. So I've maintained a pretty low profile on that front.

Thanks to all of you who have generously provided past and present support. When advertising dried up, I really thought the jig might be up - but you have come through!

I think you need to start charging TSN. Without your website, I truly believe TSN fantasy games would be nothing. Truthfully, if it wasnt for friends/gurupies playing TSN games I wouldnt play, and I'm sure there are a lot of other people in the same boat as me.

Anyways, at the minimum, I think TSN should start a referral service, where they donate $X for each signup. Clearly, this would help Rotoguru.com. Maybe its unlikely, but I think its something that Erik & co. need to here...

guru, I just started using this site, and i believe unless something big comes up i will continue to donate as long as the site is running. I think you have done an outstanding job with what you have done. Thank you for your time and effort.

I agree with AP10! We are a concentrated customer base for them. Without the people of this site's support, they would be in trouble. TSN should be giving some small percentage or commission (in lieu of calling it a kickback) because of all the input and high level than many people have given to them through this site.

i spent a year as lurker here, and then began posting fairly actively a while ago. i've gotten more involved with other things related to this site, like RSF's spread sheet helping me track a rookie-sophmore division i created.

aside from the usefull tools, which i do use regularly, especially the assimilators, the community here is a wonderful one.

that being said, it's fixin' to be time for me to pony up with my first $$$ to the cause. i may have to get over the holiday hump first, because i think i push it enough with my girlfriend "allowing" me to pay to play the TSN game...i can see her now "wait a minute. you're gonna pay for a site that's free? i don't get it..."

but rest assured, a few ducats will come from this user.

peace,
Tree

Guru - I made a donation on 10/31 that you probably put into the anonymous pile. I think I forgot to give my name. Anyway, thanks for running this site it definitely makes playing these game more enjoyable and more profitable. I plan on donating a portion of any winnings I get from TSN because frankly I wouldn't stand a chance without everyone's help on this site. And I also agree that TSN should make a donation for all the work you do to "promote" their games.

To add my $0.02 in (pun intended).... As a side benefit, Guru has graciously offered to donate a prize to league winners who meet certain criteria. If you are league commish, check out the details!

Refer your co-owners to this site, get them involved, and earn a prize!

ukula[9] - I did respond to the email address from whence your PayPal donation came. Got no reply, however.

Now that I know who it's from, your forum handle will be properly annotated.

For everyone - all donations are acknowledged via email, usually within 24 hours of receipt. If you identify your forum handle along with the donation, I can make the proper recognition updates immediately. If not, then I have to await your response.

If you don't get an acknowledgement from me within 24 hours, please send me an email alert. Occasionally, I forget, or sometimes I simply fail to notice the initial email mfrom PayPal.

This is the best sites for fantasy sports info on the net...for all of us that enjoy and benefit from the Rotoguru community it is well worth a few dollars a month/year to support Guru's efforts.

This is to all you fellow international gurupies out there - it is REALLY EASY to make a donation! PayPal is simple and secure. There is a link for international users on the page and it takes about 2 minutes to set up an account.
Consider how much time you spend in the Sortables - 2 minutes isn't that much to ask for!
